Hes got a point about ecosystems I guess. Trophies and games you've built make moving away increasingly difficult. Though Xbox did trophies first. Playstation did start 'giving away' games before Xbox. Xbox finally followed with games with gold, but the games were never of the same quality if I recall. Ps+ essentials/games with gold has one big ace over game pass/ps+ extra, you 'keep' every game you claim. The longer you stay a member the more invested you become. The new ones have no such loyalty bonus. Saying good games wouldn't help is a bit odd though, of course they would.
I don't feel the need for one, tbh I'm probably going to have to get a better TV before I start seeing any improvements. But that said, I don't think it'll hurt to release one for the people that do want it. The PS4 pro didn't hurt the PS4 at all, it's not like it ever became essential. It's just a pricier option for the enthusiasts.
I'm assuming an actual physical run will come eventually, just a bit of double (treble?) dipping. A fomo limited physical release, then digital sales, then I'm hoping the actual physical store release comes eventually.
@SgtTruth lol what? Sony are popular because people currently like and trust them, and they are nowhere anywhere near any sort of monopoly. Why should be people be forced away from something they like?
They have a place I think, but they aren't going to be the only way to play anytime soon if ever. It's the same as vr and streaming like that, why does something have to 'take over' or be 'the future' to be considered a success? They can potentially all exist alongside each other, I don't think any of them are going to remove the way we currently consume games.
I remember a old conversation about AI in fighting games. Talking about how it's easy to just make them unbeatable, because they can react to your key presses instantly. You basically have to make them fail on purpose to make them beatable.
@AverageGamer noble ideas, but even if Microsoft gets Activision, I can't imagine them wanting to pull resources away from the COD teams, they are still going to want them to pump out as many cod games as possible.
@StrickenBiged yeah, jrpgs makers have historically skipped Xbox because (I assume) they aren't a big seller among the Xbox audience. The only ones Xbox seems to get are ones that get gamepass deals.
I loved the original flashback, think I played it on the megadrive. Even finished it, got pretty easy once you got used to the controls (which took a while admittedly). I might give a sequel a go, even if things have moved on.
@NEStalgia Nintendo create video games, they are in the same market. It's ridiculous to not count them just because they have a slightly different strategy. Sony aren't even close to any sort of monopoly.
I vaguely remember reading an article back then claiming that square thought basch was too old to be a main character, and they didn't think people would want to play him. Shame I wouldn't have any idea how to find it now, or even if it's still there.
Seems odd when staff get laid off so quickly after a buyout. Isn't the main purpose of buying a video games company to acquire the staff? I mean what's left without them? A few ips and nobody to do anything with them.
@ShadowofSparta you've kind of got a point I think. I think people who enjoy long sprawling RPGs generally don't have cutting edge photo realistic graphics as a priority. Maybe developers need to aim for specific audiences rather than trying to please everyone and ending up pleasing noone.
I've been subscribed to extra since November and the only game I've played a lot is the messenger.
I don't know, the idea is good in theory, but like Netflix you start wondering what you are paying for if you're not even using it.
At least if I buy a game and don't play it (which is silly I know but I still do it) I'm not paying monthly to keep not playing it, and it certainly doesn't get 'cycled out'.
@Toypop resellers forcing themselves into the supply/demand process can push the price up, we seem to only disagree on what artificial inflation means.
@Toypop I'm pretty sure scalpers can artificially push the market value up for some items, buying out the relatively few items that are available and pricing them way higher. niche items though, where a once quite low price item suddenly rockets without any real explanation. A couple of fairly recent examples, the playstation move, shin megami tensei games. The ps5 was obviously far more mass market, but with the sheer number of people who got involved in the reselling of it, it probably did force the price higher than pure supply and demand would have.
Hmm, good list but I'd prob put put rogue legacy and super meat boy over some of them there. Does anyone know what happened to the Braid remaster that was supposed to be coming?
Limited editions are basically investments now. Hugely priced in the first place and go even higher resale, it's mostly just investors selling to investors at this point. The regular edition 1-6 being made limited is a new low though. I wont be buying those games if it doesn't get a general physical release.
@KaijuKaiser change will bring debate though, 'if it looks good' is very much personal opinion. Nestalgia has been one of the wordier dissenters, but they do represent a lot of people. Final fantasy is a huge part of a lot of people's lives, they are going to complain if they dont like how it's going, personal opinion isn't gatekeeping.
@get2sammyb I think more complicated RPGs are making a comeback lately, I don't think it's consistant across the genre any more. Which is great imo, I love them. They don't have to to sell mega millions, just keep the budget down, most old school RPG fans don't have cutting edge graphics as a priority anyway. I don't know why square can't make an old school ps1 era style final fantasy game with the budget of something like say octopath traveller. A lot of people would be happy with that.
@Human_Tornado the essential monthly games you keep 'forever' as long as your subscription is active, the extra and premium games you lose access to when they are removed.
@RadioHedgeFund The question is how big an audience is there for playing games regularly in hotels/on the go. Sure there's a small amount of people who appreciate that, but the vast majority don't consider that as something they need. Take that strength away and there's not much left to sell streaming to people.
It'll only take off if it grabs the younger generations interest I think, it's pretty clear that the vast majority of the current gamers aren't interested.
@truerbluer lots of people enjoy creating 'free content'. Super mario maker, little big planet, Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft. People do like building stuff and showing it to the world.
Super nostalgia I remember this. Though probably not enough to want to play it again. If we're reviving forgotten Amiga games how about mega-lo-mania? With a Vs multiplayer mode. I'd be on that day one.
@XenonKnight pc gamers don't really have an advantage in fighting games though, they are probably using a controller too. Cheating I guess though, more potential on pc of course.
People drink monster because they like the taste, not sure why people don't understand that. I personally can't understand why anyone would willingly drink coffee. Foul stuff imo.
I'm torn, I know you can just ignore them if you want, but having options like that sat in the menu does play on your mind when you are trying to play the original experience.
@Blacksmith1985 load times is one feature that has passed right over me to be honest. Maybe I'm just accustomed to them, but I don't really get any joy out of the ps5 loading a bit faster. The occasional game was ridiculous, GTA online springs to mind, but waiting a few extra seconds means nothing to me. Maybe I still compare everything to my starting gaming device, the spectrum lol.
The console itself can still blend into a modern living room, so the style definitely isn't retro. The games, I don't know, not much has changed really apart from better graphics, there hasn't been a huge shift/evolution in gameplay types.
@theMEGAniggle it's not really fair to call vr niche, but yes it's definitely not mainstream, it's somewhere in between. It's got the potential to do well, with the right games, beat saber alone is proof of that. I think meta/Facebook has blurred things somewhat, with their bizarre all in approach to vr, it's a slowly growing audience, not the immediate future. Nfts haven't helped vr either, an unfortunate diversion.
@BeerIsAwesome We'll have ps controllers in our hands at least, playing our (AI generated) video games. Unless we've given up and we'll just be watching an AI play it for us.
@BeerIsAwesome Thing is, AI could possibly threaten the jobs of the people who usually like to make cuts one day. AI CEOs doesn't seem like such a stretch any more.
Crazy how far AI could go. I mean one day we might just be able to say 'make an RPG for me like final fantasy' and it might just do it. Ais about to make some severe shockwaves I'm sure. And video/voice AI of course, in a few years we could potentially not be sure if videos/audio are even real. Going to be crazy for people, innocent people having to prove AI voice/photo isn't real, and guilty people claiming the evidence is AI.

Judging by eBay, they must have made about 10 copies for PS4. Switch physical seems a lot more available though.

@cragis0001 not agreeing with you certainly doesn't mean clueless.

Re: Microsoft Dealt Major Blow as UK Blocks Activision Buyout
@NEStalgia how does Sony have a near monopoly? Nintendo and pc are heavy hitters, and Xbox themselves are hardly tiny players.
Re: Microsoft Dealt Major Blow as UK Blocks Activision Buyout
@RR529 I don't know the details, but pretty sure a company has to pull out of a country altogether if it doesn't want to play by that countries rules.
Re: Microsoft Dealt Major Blow as UK Blocks Activision Buyout
Microsoft really laying into the UK about this. 'closed for business' , 'reassess growth plans', showing their true colours I guess.
