Publisher: Private Division / Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Release Date: 25th Oct 2019 (USA) / 25th Oct 2019 (UK/EU)

The Outer Worlds is a masterclass in role-playing game design. Veteran studio Obsidian has delivered a fantastic sci-fi adventure that channels both Fallout: New Vegas and Mass Effect with an even heavier emphasis on player choice. Brilliantly witty writing, great characters, and and punchy combat combine to make this a memorable journey across the seemingly doomed space colony of Halcyon. If you're looking for pure role-playing excellence, few games on this list can stand alongside The Outer Worlds.

7. Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon: Zero DawnHorizon: Zero Dawn
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Guerrilla Games
Release Date: 28th Feb 2017 (USA) / 1st Mar 2017 (UK/EU)

Guerrilla Games' first attempt at the open world RPG has left genre veterans looking out-of-touch. While it may lack imagination in some areas of its design, Horizon: Zero Dawn executes its ideas so flawlessly that it can be forgiven for not reinventing the post-post-apocalyptic wheel. Aloy's adventure is one filled with mystery, spanning that of the current climate's tribal politics all the way back to the fall of mankind as we know it. A tight narrative is tied together by combat befitting of a third-person action game, and it's all wrapped up with presentation so polished it resembles a more linear release.

Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: Square Enix
Release Date: 4th Sep 2018 (USA) / 4th Sep 2018 (UK/EU)

Quite possibly the best Dragon Quest title ever made, Dragon Quest XI is pretty much the series at its peak. The sense of adventure is amazing, but it's the characters that steal the show. This is the most in-depth a Dragon Quest party has ever been, and their personalities shine through. It's also a gorgeous looking game, with the character models in particular raising the bar for Japanese RPGs. Superbly crafted, witty, and unbelievably charming, it's the best traditional JRPG experience on PS4 by some distance.
