This looks far more encouraging than I was anticipating. After absolutely disliking both RE7 and Village I was expecting more of that but this looks like RE2, which is exactly what I want; modern day urban setting with zombies instead of whatever the hell the last 2 games were with dumb tar monsters, werewolves, cyborgs and other nonsense.
DLSS is Nvidia technology, Steam Machine has no Nvidia hardware
Free online access to play what exactly? All the games I listed aren't compatible with SteamOS
Developers can't optimise games because the Steam Machine runs PC software. These games are not exclusively made for Steam Machine hardware like console releases are
And what about the games that can't be played on a controller on PS5? How do you intend to play something like Europa Universalis V with a controller? Isn't the supposed allure of this device that it can play games not on PS5?
Physical games are an option in addition to digital for console owners, you have no choices on Steam Machine
This Steam Machine seems to have the worst of both worlds (console and PC):
More expensive and less powerful than already existing consoles
No physical media means no lending/borrowing/trading/used copies
No UHD movie playback for home entertainment setup
Can't upgrade the hardware like a PC
No games will be designed to optimise the hardware; users need to manually toggle settings for every game due to running the generic PC versions
Multiplayer games that use anti-cheat won't work at all including the biggest games; Fortnite, Call of Duty, Battlefield, EA Sports FC, GTA Online, Apex Legends, Madden NFL - so "free online" is a moot point
Games without proper controller support will require keyboard and mouse; some games don't even let you configure settings with a controller
I don't understand who this hardware is supposed to appeal to? PC gamers lose the raw power and hardware flexibility while console gamers lose the plug and play, physical ownership, optimised games and full controller support. And both will lose access to the most popular online games with this Steam Machine.
@LogicStrikesAgain It's not mutually exclusive, people can dislike live service and MMOs but still feel Sony is obligated to provide to their console, especially when a competing platform is getting it. This wouldn't be an issue if it was mobile only, just like Nintendo fans didn't care about Super Mario Run and Mario Kart Tour not being on Switch.
Sony has completely failed to justify why online multiplayer is still paywalled when even their own games release day one on PC with free online and has crossplay enabled by default.
The previous excuse of providing a secure walled garden or paying for server costs doesn't cut it when you allow another platform full access to the exact same servers at no charge.
I think this pretty much ensures PlayStation 1st party won't ever make single player focused fps games again. There's literally no incentive for them to enter the space when the competition is bringing their titles to the platform; Resistance and Killzone are as good as dead.
Credit where credit's due, I applaud Microsoft for being forthright about which platforms the game will release on so people can make an informed purchase. Unlike another company that refuses to commit either way despite a clear pattern emerging from previous releases...
Saros and Wolverine bookended the whole event with complete filler junk between and even they don't look that spectacular. What's the point of showing games that are literally releasing in a matter of weeks or even days from now. A complete waste of time.
Not for me, I hate trial and error gameplay and this seems like it will be rife with it. Also the fact that the frame rate is so poor and it's being developed for Switch 2 makes me wary about the technical shortcomings it might have.
For all that are disgruntled about PlayStation's direction and contemplating going to PC, here's some tips and advice:
All games bought on Steam offer full refunds if your play count is under 2 hours.
You can get games even cheaper through serial key sellers that activate the game on Steam, however you can't get refunds for these.
Discord and cross-play has broken the barrier of needing to be on the same platform to communicate and play with friends and it's all free, no subscriptions required.
You don't have to settle for Windows, Linux is a viable option but only under specific circumstances: it depends on which GPU you choose, Nvidia or AMD.
Nvidia is generally way better than AMD, however it performs worse on Linux than Windows. If choosing an Nvidia GPU it's best to stick with Windows.
AMD offers full Linux parity and oftentimes outperforms Windows. It's safe to use Linux if choosing an AMD gpu.
If you play online games that use anti-cheat you will have to use Windows.
If you intend to use Game Pass you can only use it on Windows.
DualSense works fully on PC and all games that use its features work as long as it's wired.
You don't have to use a bulky desktop, small form factor PCs can be built that can better suit the living room.
Bazzite is a Linux distro that can be installed that replicates the console experience and can be fully navigated using a controller, making it an ideal choice for small form factor PCs.
If opting for a desktop, Nobara is a better Linux distro choice that offers more configurability.
You can emulate games on old platforms with ease, you're not beholden to whenever Sony feels you can access them.
Who cares anymore? I no longer see any logical argument against porting to Xbox. The PC ports already showed that Sony has no desire to protect the prestige of their brand, so why not just go all out and make as much money wherever possible, because of course that's all that matters to the shareholders right?
@twitchtvpat Nixxes are only porting games well after the PS5 version has released, they don't work actively while the console version is in development.
Both Bend and Bluepoint were developing live service games, which were undoubtably also being developed for PC simultaneously (as all live service games have launched on PC day 1). And it's obvious these studios couldn't handle the extra workload because their projects were both cancelled.
So I would say yes, the shift to multiplatform live service development has not benefitted PS5 owners. Had they just continued to make single player games only for PS5 they would be out by now but instead they have to sit out the rest of the generation and we won't get anything from them for at least another 4 years.
@Fyz306903 Because they went all in on live service games, which are being developed for both console and PC simultaneously. Naturally it's going to take longer to make these games instead of just focusing on one platform like they used to.
I'll believe it if they bring back the "Only on PlayStation" branding. Until then I'll continue to presume everything will release on PC.
They've practically ported every notable title to PC already with no regard to it being a "tentpole" console game. The only exception being Gran Turismo 7 (a cross-gen game). The only other games they haven't ported yet are Astro Bot (too soon), Demon's Souls (too old?) and Destruction All-Stars (poor reception).
Even their latest single player releases have been releasing day and date: Lego Horizon, Until Dawn Remake, Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster.
@StrickenBiged You just described the 3DO business model, and that failed miserably. The big problem with following that model is that the hardware makers (Asus, Lenovo, Dell etc) do not get a cut of any software sold on the platform. They cannot subsidise the price of the console like traditional console makers to make its price attractive to consumers, therefore in order to make profit the hardware has to be exorbitantly priced otherwise it makes no business sense to make them at all.
It's kind of a double edged sword for PlayStation because while the Marvel license pretty much guarantees massive success, Sony ultimately has no control over the property and Marvel can easily revoke the license and move to another publisher. This wouldn't be an issue if it was Sony's own original property and characters but we all saw how that turned out with Concord.
I think a 6/10 is a generous rating. I'm interested in a good number of games shown but very few were actual new reveals and none of them are actually exclusive (excluding Ghost of Yotei, which was simply a teaser for another event).
I'm getting tired of these State of Plays being nothing but 3rd party multiplatform showcases. People watch PlayStation events specifically for PlayStation games, just like people watch Nintendo Directs for Nintendo games. Sony has done a terrible job of showcasing why anyone should choose PS5 as their primary platform when everything can already be played elsewhere.
Compare and contrast this to Sandfall Interactive. Both studios comprised of ex-Ubisoft devs but you can see the creative vision and passion behind CO: E33 whereas this game looks like gen z trend chasing garbage with no clear vision.
You can just tell the Sandfall crew is made up of employees who left Ubisoft on their own accord to follow their passion whereas Haven is probably the people who Ubisoft deemed expendable even for their low standards.
The trifecta of a steep asking price (£70), requiring a ray tracing capable GPU and being available on Game Pass has all contributed to these low Steam numbers.
I've been reading comments from those who've played it and the consensus seems to be that it's the weakest game of the modern trilogy and fans of the previous games probably won't like the radical gameplay changes here.
I never understood how MK1, which had the longest development time between Netherrealm releases (4 years) launched with significantly less content than MK11, which released only 2 years after Injustice 2.
They also completely botched the opportunity of being a "reboot" to overhaul everything and instead made it a direct sequel with multiverse nonsense. The series needs to rest for at least half a decade and return with a back-to-basics actual reboot to win back the fans. Netherrealm should make a Shaolin Monks spiritual successor in the meantime.
This was one of the few Xbox franchises I'd been envious of... until I played FH4 through a Game Pass trial. The graphics are doing the heavy lifting here because it seems to make reviewers completely gloss over the awful driving mechanics and gameplay loop. Every car I drove heavily understeers and just feels awful to turn, like manoeuvring a boat. The races themselves get boring real quick all being in the same environment.
I'm not a Bungie fan but this is one of the few live service titles I'm feeling optimistic about. I believe Bungie/Sony are going to throw everything to ensure the game succeeds because there's a lot riding on it, most importantly Bungie's continuing existence.
I don't like how this series seems to have shifted away from the iconic sci-fi/hell theme into a bland generic dark fantasy aesthetic.
The gameplay also seems like a radical departure from the previous games; now centred around open world checklist completion over a focused, well-paced linear experience.
@UltimateOtaku91 Do you honestly believe current Sony leadership aren't considering ways to port those games to Switch 2? I wouldn't put it past them to license them out to 3rd parties to do the work just like they did Lego Horizon.
At this point I think it's 50/50 that some form of Astro Bot will make its way to Switch 2.
Also, the hierarchy of game companies is firmly established now:
1. Nintendo
2. Valve
3. PlayStation
4. Xbox
That's the current order of operations. Nintendo will receive first-party releases from the companies listed beneath and they will not reciprocate. On the opposite end, Xbox puts their first-party on all the above and get nothing in return.
I don't think Sony has the means to block it from happening because any other device that can run Steam can play their games so why would this be any different? If this new platform runs Windows as is rumoured then any block Sony imposes would be easy to circumvent.
It's a chaotic move from MS because they get to say their new platform can play PS games with all the added benefits of the PC ports including free online. However they'll also be shooting themselves in the foot because the same would apply to MS games on Steam that don't require a subscription for online.
Either way PS5 owners should rightfully be upset if this happens.
@Oram77 PC games traditionally had been cheaper before online marketplaces became popular because there were no licensing costs to publish on PC unlike consoles whose manufacturers take a 30% cut on all games, thus making console games more expensive.
However online marketplaces like Steam are no different than consoles and also demand a 30% cut so it makes no sense to see this egregious price disparity between PC and console releases anymore.
@Oram77 This isn't published by Sony on PC but the concern is the lack of price parity when the PC versions continue to release cheaper and the PS version remains full price.
The message being sent is if you wait a year, you'll get a superior version for much cheaper and instills buyers remorse for those who shelled out the full £70 for a worse version.
Launching new games on Game Pass and releasing everything simultaneously on PC are the two biggest blunders that has tanked the entire Xbox platform. They very well could have recovered had they persisted with the tried and true strategy of compelling exclusives, just look at how Nintendo Switch turned it around but they gave up so easily.
