As we cruise around Mexico in a car emblazoned with Xbox logos and listening to Halo music on the radio, it's fair to say Forza Horizon 5 being on PS5 feels a little surreal.
Many will already be familiar with the open world racing game, seeing as it's several years old at this stage, but for those who've never touched the series, can it be said that PlayStation players have been missing out? Yes and no.
Yes, because it's probably the best game in its field, with a stunning sandbox to explore and some seriously smooth driving. No, because the intervening years have seen impressive alternatives like The Crew Motorfest and Need for Speed Unbound fill the gap.
However, despite some excellent effort from the competition, it's clear now that Forza Horizon has been leading the pack all this time.
This is the latest entry in the open world racer franchise that does away with any meaningful story and puts the emphasis on driving. There's a racing festival in Mexico, and you're a driver in attendance, heralded as some kind of vehicular virtuoso.

The game begins apace and rarely lifts its foot off the gas. The first thing you do is sample various car classes across different terrain, setting the tone for a carefree driving experience.
Initially, it's honestly quite overwhelming; there are so many events peppered across the vast map, and you unlock dozens if not hundreds more as you reach certain player level thresholds and open up the Horizon festival's different hubs. To look at the map after a few hours of play is quite daunting.
The game is so eager to lead you from one thing to the next it can be hard to truly comprehend what's even on offer. Essentially, there are distinct event types, like road races, drag races, off-road excursions, and PR stunts — think speed traps and massive jumps.
Another layer on top is all FH5's online and user-generated events. There are limited-time events that count towards your progress in the game's current season, spots in which you can collaborate with other players to complete mini objectives, and much more.
Adding to that feeling of pin-balling around the game is the pace at which you unlock new cars. The game has money in the form of Credits, and so far, not once have we felt the need to spend any of it, because your garage grows almost on its own. We have nearly 100 cars so far and couldn't tell you how we unlocked most of them.
Not to labour the point too much, but you're also earning XP for your own player level, gaining skill points to unlock perks on a per-car basis, and earning wheelspins, which are essentially loot boxes, at seemingly random intervals.

Again, the game has so much stuff going on that it can feel bewildering at points. However, once you're used to FH5's relentless onslaught of activities, the sense of freedom and fun comes to the forefront, and it becomes a real automotive playground.
All those events we mentioned are satisfying to tick off, even if the AI's difficulty can feel inconsistent at times. Regardless, though, races are engaging thanks primarily to the excellent driving at the core of the game.
It's sim-cade territory, striking a wonderful balance that rewards calculated braking and racing lines but doesn't totally neuter the fun of big, juicy drifts. Impressive is how consistently fun the driving is across the hundreds of included vehicles, yet they all do feel quite distinct.
The handling holds up across road and dirt tracks, with the world offering ample amounts of both. Mexico is a gorgeous place to explore and surprisingly varied — picturesque towns with twisting streets, swamps and jungles hiding ancient ruins, and an enormous volcano that's very fun to hurtle down.

Indeed, the game looks stunning; we played predominantly in performance mode, which feels like a locked 60 frames-per-second, and it never faltered from a crystal clear image. The quality mode is your usual trade-off of higher resolution at the expense of frame rate, and while it's perfectly playable, we'd recommend performance mode, as it feels much nicer with negligible difference to the graphics.
Overall, once you're past the overwhelming opening hours, there's so much to sink your teeth into here. Aside from the countless races and events, there's the evolving seasonal content, extensive car tuning and customisation, and the ability to create and share liveries, events, and more with the community.
It's about as fully-featured a racing game as you could reasonably expect. While that brings with it a cluttered map, some fiddly UI, and constant inane nattering from NPCs, the upshot is clear — a racer with unparalleled variety and a real sense of fun.
Conclusion
Forza Horizon 5 might be a few years old, but its vast amount of activities, robust feature set, and superb driving model mean it's still out in front. It isn't perfect — it can feel bloated and overwhelming, the AI is frustrating at times, and the characters and dialogue are a constant weakness. However, behind the wheel, tackling its myriad events and exploring the beautiful open world, it's hard to not be convinced by its optimistic personality and sense of fun. Despite its late arrival on PS5, it still feels showroom fresh.

I don‘t like the transition from „we cover DualSense features in every review“ to „not a single mention of one of the best features this gen“
Well of course it's the best since the bar/competition are so low.
It stil feels surreal that this is releasing on Playstation. Not planning on getting it, but maybe in the future
"Overwhelming pace of content" is there because PS5 got the game almost four years after initial release. So I get that it's a "negative" but it's still a strange one.
Pacing during initial release was way lenient.
sorry push this is a ten
@Toot1st 100% it’s a 10/10 game.
Still seems surreal it’s turned up on PlayStation. As it is an Xbox game I expect the usual negative comments for the sake of it such as ‘no disc no buy’ blah blah. Truth is it’s a remarkable game which will hit hard with the casual gamer and sell bucketloads.
I can see as an Xbox console user it sucks to see the Crown Jewels go full slate but lots of wonderful games are going out to more people.
Crew and NFS are good but Horizon is wonderful. 😁
The second most important game for me this year. The first one was KCD 2.
@Cerny totally agree, I'd also like more details about the pro version, oh and more psvr2 reviews ,even mini ones would be welcome
@Godot25
Sorry, Ive got to play 'devils advocate' here.
A reviewer must review according to what is in front of them, at release on the console in question.
As a PS5 only player, I don't care what has happened in the past on other systems, only what state it launches on PS5. If it was drip fed on XBox, but coming in new on PS5 feels overwhelming, then thats a justied negative.
Similarly, a reviewer should never review based on promised future 'patches', only based on what is provided for review. If necessary, give it a very low score and re-score when fixed.
Easily my favourite racer this Gen and its why i got it again for PS5. Got it downloaded and ready for Friday and i'm excited to see how it looks on the Pro especially as i've only played the SS version.
@Toot1st At the very, very least a 9/10 is warranted, disappointed to see a different treatment here just because it’s an Xbox game.
The vapid dialogue is a deal breaker for me - drove me mad the last time I tried to play these games.
@DennisReynolds basically the same albeit I prefer FH4 and have both on PC (after selling XSX.) I double dipped on pre order.
@Rich33 I don’t think it’s overwhelming at all tbh. It’s full of content for your money and a very casual game. You can lazily travel the map and do things or don’t do things. Really chill if that is what you want.
The characters as a con. In a racing game. 👀
I mean yeah, it's an opinion for sure.
10/10? No way. I was bored with it in a few days. The missions are very much alike and the racing isn’t exciting in the slightest. I can understand however if people enjoy this when arcade racers are up their alley, but it’s far from perfect.
@IOI We don’t treat any game differently just because it’s from a certain publisher. This is Stephen’s opinion on the game; there are no biases for or against here.
4 was good only because it was in Scotland.
As caRPGs go, is Forza a decent choice? I've never played any of them, and keep umming and ahhing about going in on GT7.
The Czar shops,
when the price drops.
I don't want to be rude,
But twenty euro sounds good.
I got my first XBox in April of last year, a series X, just to try out some of these XBox exclusives. After playing some of the Halo games and Gears of War, I was kinda underwhelmed and was considering selling it.
Then I fired up Forza Horizon 5 for the first time.
As a result, I still have that series X, as well as purchased copies of Horizon 4-5 digitally and 2-3 on disc. It’s safe to say that Horizon 4 and 5 were the huge reasons I kept that console.
And now 5 is on PS5, with 6 HOPEFULLY also on PS5 at launch.
It is a good time to be a PS owner!
@IOI honestly how do reviewers actually win with you? If this gets a higher Metacritic on PS then you will be screaming XbOx TaX from the rooftops. If it scores lower than it will be because reviews are biased against MS.
A review is an opinion and every opinion is different. If you go looking for conspiracies you’re going to find them but maybe just accept that not every person on the planet thinks this is a 10/10 game.
Such a strange time to be alive. I enjoyed it on Gamepass but now there is far too much Dlc, really all I want is Burnout. A remake or remaster or even a new one entirely, anything.
Yeah I'd say Forza Horizon is certainly the best in its genre, though personally I feel FH4 is better than 5, partly because the progression system in 5 isn't nearly as good. Still, overall it's a fantastic arcade racing game, especially online with some friends, or in my case, many hours spent playing with my son
@Cerny yeah bit of a basic (but not bad) review. No mention of DualSense or Pro features. No real mention of character customisation, properties to be purchased and the real good soundtrack actually via the radio stations and DJs.
Every clip I see of this game is just driving in a straight line across a hill, or driving on a slightly curved road by yourself. I will have to look at some gameplay vids.
@carlos82 yep i think FH4 is better than 5
Those cons are why I stopped playing within an hour on its original release. It also has a rubber band AI issue as mentioned in the following critique:
https://youtu.be/ITTggaUYFvk?si=GB5PJfIT4Nx1W0Dy
What a shame we missed out on 4.
@Cerny Indiana Jones actually made decent use of the Dual sense features.
What a world when 8 is considered a bad score. 🤣
Anyway, I got this for free with a Series X bundle from GameStop so double-dipping won't hurt. The cringy dialogue does hurt, though.
I've played FH4 and loved it. Haven't played 5, but may pick it up eventually.
I might give it a try. Haven’t loved a racing game since Midnight Club: Los Angeles. As far as I know, Forza and Gran Turismo are very different racing games from Midnight Club.
Honestly my ONLY problem with this series really is the amount of cars thrown at you. I want to purchase cars, I want to go from rags to riches, and I want each car I acquire to feel like a proper reward. The last time I played a Forza Horizon game I had so many cars that it felt like Netflix - too much choice so nothing stands out.
I'm delighted to see that foliage density and pop in in performance mode are now resolved for the pro. I had found them annoying when I first played this on series X to the point where I'd often play it on PC instead (and I hardly ever play on PC!)
Very happy to jump back into this - its a great game, even if I prefer FH4, and I now get to play it without the pop in issues - happy days.
Pun Square does it again
Indiana Jones received a much higher score here than or Pure. In fact, Pure had the lowest score of any outlet if I can remember. I do not see any bias in this review like I have seen in the past on a few games. With that being said, those who decide to buy this game are in for a treat. I have played this on Xbox for years and it is a lot of fun. Although I do not have the Pro, I am anxious to hear how the upgrades work out since it is already a beautiful game.
Fair review. I played it, it's brilliant, but all the flaws you mention are there and how much those bother you will affect your personal score. Personally I preferred FH4 and this was just more of the same.
@Godot25 I played it at release (on Xbox) and the way the map opens up with dozens and then hundreds of map markers and events IS overwhelming. I didn't even know where to begin and it felt like it needed some better guidance. Great game but it has some clear flaws.
@IOI FYI. Push Square gave:
You can disagreed with the score but how on earth you can claim they gave a different treatment to this game when they never gave bad score to Xbox games?
Also 8/10 is a better score than some PS exclusives. FYI, Push Square gave:
According to your logic, Push Square should give 9's or 10's to these PS exclusives right? 🙄
@DennisReynolds
Go to DF they say the performance mode 60fps is a good improvement on the Pro.
Also up on Pure Xbox.
Forza Horizon quickly became my Favourite Car Racing game as it blended the Sim style 'Forza/GT' type cars, customisation etc and blended it with more Arcade and 'fun' activities. Since games like Burnout have disappeared, Forza Horizon games have been the only racing games I play nowadays.
FH5 is the latest in a great line of Forza Horizon games and I'm glad that others are now able to experience it. I don't think MS will bother with bringing Forza Motorsport to Playstation - I don't think it will sell well enough to justify the costs of porting and supporting the game as Gran Turismo is more direct Competition and established on Playstation.
Anyway, Great to see more people able to play what I consider to be the best Racing game of its type instead of settling for 3rd rate 'clones' trying to emulate this...
After reading the review, the score seems mean. Of course it's going to be overwhelming, all the content has dumped in one go. This is one of the only games I was ever jealous of on another console
@lazarus11 Digital foundry have you covered if you want proper pro coverage of this title, and its really good news on the pro...
One of my most disappointing gaming purchases ever. Not that it's bad per se, but I bought a Series X (despite already having a PS5 since launch), so it effectively cost me the guts of €600 for this.
It's a 6/10 game at best. To wit;
-Pacing/sense of progression is non-existent. It hands you hypercars after an hour of play.
-For an arcade racer, it handles like molasses, while lacking the precision and nuance of a sim-cade racer.
-Being able to buldoze though a stone wall at 400km/h in a Bugatti with zero consequence is certainly a design choice
-The "story" and writing would embarrass your local under-10 Am-Dram class.
And even if it didn't have all those flaws, it's not even the best game in the series (2, 3, and 4 are all better games).
@x3King84
As you will see from my comment, I am PS5 (Pro) only, so haven't played the game - therefore I wasn't commenting on the pacing itself, as I don't have any experience of this.
The original comment I was responding to, appeared to accept the reviewers opinion on pacing (at least thats how I read it), but was saying that it is because of the near 4 year gap between Xbox and PS5 launch (presumably due to additonal content since launch - I don't know, they never clarified).
My comment was that the reviewer cannot take this into account and can only take as they find it now ie that their audience will be playing for the 1st time.
@Lup I mean, have you actually played the game? On paper, yeah, it doesn't make sense, but when you sit down and have to endure the utter drivel that passes for the characters in this game it makes perfect sense.
Too much good games coming out. Don't have the money to buy them all.
@bluemage1989 Pretty sure you can turn alot of that commentary off.
@MrPeanutbutterz
Yes I did. And I don't really care about that stuff in a racing game.
But as I said: opinions.
I personally would never put that as a con.
Pre-loading now for Friday 😀 still seems surreal seeing this on ps5.
@Darude84 forza horizon doesn’t feel like arcade racing, they still have too much of a simulator gameplay feel to it. give me midnight club, motorstorm or split second instead of this.
@Lup Fair. I wish I could tune the nonsense out, but like the reviewer it was too egregious to ignore, and it became a blight on the game.
@nomither6 Finally, someone else who feels like this doesn't have much of an arcade feel to it.
This was one of the few Xbox franchises I'd been envious of... until I played FH4 through a Game Pass trial. The graphics are doing the heavy lifting here because it seems to make reviewers completely gloss over the awful driving mechanics and gameplay loop. Every car I drove heavily understeers and just feels awful to turn, like manoeuvring a boat. The races themselves get boring real quick all being in the same environment.
I'd really like to know how this plays with a wheel and shifter tbh..
@LiamCroft
Ahem... don't you know reviewers have "taxed" Xbox games for a decade now?
Can't believe that conspiracy has stuck around😆
@Toot1st @IOI
played it a bit after release and it was still too much too quickly.
I had a blast, but after 10 hours I was kind of burned out- I simply don't get how this was a 10 for some people for me a 7/8.
Also the Xbox tax.... seriously....
Will buy the premium edition when the price reduces, also does anyone know if the Universal Icons pack is included or will be a separate download ?
For the price point I just can't support it. Maybe if it drops to sub $40.
I loved Forza Horizon 4, played the heck out of it.
I played 5 on XBox Series S for about a month when it came out, and found it underwhelming. It felt like more of the same, but not in a good way.
If they've nailed the DualSense haptics, I could be convinced to pick this up (on sale) someday. Too bad you don't mention the DualSense at all. Is this actually a review for the Playstation version? It feels like a warmed-over XBox review with "now PS5 players get it, too!" comments thrown in.
What a game needs to get a 9 or 10 in this site?
@nomither6 Simulator?! It’s just hitting the gas and steering.
@Cornpop76 agree, I adored MSR on my dreamcast, then the PGR games on xbox, but love the FH games too (just not quite as much!)
Have FH2, 3, 4 and 5 (DLC for the last 2) on XSX and love them, though FH5 felt a bit meh to me, maybe as It's my fourth FH game, or maybe it just felt a bit bland. Still a very good game though, but not double-dipping...
(I would have picked up FH4 in a flash though)
@truerbluer Yyyeeesss. Felt like I was manoeuvring boulders regardless of what car (or what surface) I was using.
Going off your Goteki 45 avatar, I can see you're used to more refined and twitchy arcade handling.
@Darude84 alright simulator is the wrong word then, but it don’t feel arcade either. it feels too realistic and boring
@Andee To me GT7/Forza Motorsport 2023 are bad at progression but offer a fair ok experience. If you want a circuit racers and to drive cars/do ok progression sure. If you want an open world and to drive freely besides car based missions go the open worlds. GT, Forza Motorsport, Wreckfest, Grid and more are circuit racers and if your not into motorsport (I'm not but still enjoy racing games) then yeah you probably might not care and just want an open world to drive in and enjoy besides the car based stuff.
Many that praise Horizon games or played FH5 did because they had nothing else to play and went eh a racing game with a cool location.
Racing fans may say differently based on what cars, or what events they do. But non-racing fans can just enjoy the world recreated elements I guess the same way they may any non racing open world game.
GT7 to me has more event variety while FM 2023 dumped all that of past games while GT7 has enough of GT Sport or still old event types of past GT games in it besides being GT Sport format forward and feels bland.
Then again many 3rd party ones have like 2 modes and get boring as they focus on physics/cars/tracks and not progression/event variety.
Depends what you seek of cars, tracks, or just fun factor if not into racing games that's just what I seek though is progression/mechanics, cars to me are just characters with stats, the progression needs good restrictions, not going oh classes of this but more deeper then that which GT games always did well of different aspects of cars but it is very enthusiast like that way, even if you can still get into them without knowing what a turbo is you would just treat them as upgrades in an RPG sense or as if saying grenades only or pistols with piercing bullets only kind of thing of reasoning for say only this country, only this car maker, only front wheel drive, only boxer engines aka Subaru Impreza/others or RUF type games (Porsche alternative), if it was a shooter the gun type reasoning I presented for example.
Open world ones offer enough of like any open world different event types of drifting or point a to b or other things.
Burnout Paradise I think did fair of it's modes to an open world I just found the open world confusing and the AI knew what they were doing, stunt ones were tricky sometimes as you went along for starting spots and what to get points from. It varies.
Test Drive Unlimited old ones were fair, to me Solar Crown is pretty hmm. Looks empty and dull but I didn't see a lot of it.
Forza Horizon, The Crew and NFS probably all do it in far ways. NFS still keeping to it's street racing/compete with police.
The others not sure.
NFS Unbound has really bad repetition and recycling I've heard but fair cell shading and ideas most others are too complacent with.
To me Forza Horizon looked like any other generic open world racing game not just because it popularises it.
The Crew 2 to me the multiple vehicle types seemed cool but Motorfest is different.
If you want to just drive for the views and recreation of reality sure go do that and on occasion do missions or whatever.
To me most of them are pretty eh of missions and reality recreated doesn't interest me. I always preferred fictional circuits (and NFS does fictional cities with fair paths even if still inspired by real world locations).
@DonkeyFantasy It's not even close to being a full arcade racer. An actual arcade racer is Ridge Racer/Outrun 2/Daytona.
Forza is firmly simcade territory, the cars have weight, inertia, tyre physics. If you turn off the assists, powerful RWD cars spin fairly easily just like they do in GT7 or AC.
@Darude84 Every racing game is just "hitting the gas and steering". Just like every FPS "pointing a gun and shooting".
@Rich33 it felt overwhelming when it first came out with all the activities to do.
It's not Gran Turismo 7, which still engages millions of players even now with it's constant weekly event updates
I played it quite a bit at launch, and while I don’t love some of the things you mentioned (NOC chatter mostly), it’s an incredible game.
If it’s not a 9/10 or 10/10, I don’t know what is. Gorgeous graphics, approachable gameplay, so much to do most could never finish it all. It’s one of the best arcade-ish racers in many years.
@Shrek_Realista ‘ What a game needs to get a 9 or 10 in this site?’
A Naughty Dog label. 😂
😜
Preinstalled and ready for Friday. Can’t wait to play through it all again. Absolutely amazing racer.
@SoulChimera I'm so weak. Played FH2-5 on my XSX, now I'm a PS5 player, and have the game and DLC downloading FFS...
can't wait to play it again - working from home tomorrow too
@TheGrizMan it is incredible, I think it's probably an 8/10 if you've played some of the previous games, as it's just more of the same, but if you've not played it before and the idea appeals, it's a 10/10 all day long.
@IOI FYI the Xbox sister site reviewed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for 6/10, while push square awarded it 8 / 10 when it came to PS. Your accusation of bias are unsubstantiated
@stBoa It's really great in my opinion. Through the settings, you can make it almost sim-like as well.
@LordGlarc Good news !
Thanks for the heads up.
@LordGlarc also, can you play in cockpit view with no steering wheel and hands showing?
@viktorcode purexbox also gave this game 8/10
@stBoa I believe so. I know FH5 has a decent selection of cockpit views.
@LordGlarc nice one, looks like I'll be buying this then.
@SuntannedDuck2 Cheers for the super-thorough answer — I think basically what I'm after is a racing/driving game that's fun, but you essentially win XP/currency in races with which you can spend on souping up your vehicles or buying new ones, basically like in the original Gran Turismo or, if you wanna go a bit older school, Road Rash
@IOI
Different from what? Is the 8/10 from Push Square different from the 8/10 from Pure Xbox for some reason?
https://www.purexbox.com/reviews/xbox-series-x/forza-horizon-5
Or have you got your tin foil hat on pretending there's some kind of Xbox tax still?
I often have issues with the reviews here at Push and they are not my favourite articles to read, but an 8/10 when your very own Xbox site gave the same is no evidence of Bias?
They called everything that's wrong with this game - cluttered maps that make it hard to see events, no sense of progression at all and truly awful characters scripts and acting. It's a testament to the fun of the racing that it scores 8/10.
I love Forza Horizon, but like many, I believe it's FH4 that's a 9 or 9.5 score worthy. Doesn't mean FH5 isn't a great game though and I'd still recommend this to any PS only gamers who haven't had a chance to play the series before.... I pre ordered it the day it was announced despite having it on my series X and also on Steam.
@Dimey It’s not weakness, it’s common sense. Haha.
Dropped FH5, my first experience with the series, after 15 hours or so a few years ago. Too much/ too little at the same time. Bought FH4 for some reason before it was delisted and enjoyed that much more.
@Andee Understandable, and your welcome.
Yeah Road Rash is great. Road Redemption and the Burnout like Dangerous Driving I hear hit/miss things about.
Hmm to me these days it's tough, some like Super Woden GP 1 & 2 are very GT 1 & 2 of progression, menus, and other details but isometric. I wasn't that into the isometric but you get used to it it's just the challenge of the progression besides the isometric look. 2 is better as 1 has no upgrades. 2 is the way to go of upgrades and more cars/tracks, fake names but fair recreations of cars/tracks.
Table Top Racing has upgrades, fair car designs, it's a kart racer but had more to it then I thought it would be ex WipEout Devs, Redout was too.
Gas Guzzlers is arcade fair derby, weapons, odd vehicles and races. Kind of reminds me of Full Auto on 360 or Full Auto 2 on PS3/PSP.
Grip is fair.
Rise Race the Future on Switch has fair challenges and championships.
WRC 3 on PS3/360 was the best career mode (in mode variety) I'd played for a annual rally game, wouldn't say for the others but they are still fair at what they do of challenges or upgrades and management systems.
But been buying up older WRC, MotoGP and F1 games & MotoGP just made me disappointed. 16 or named after a rider had dirt bike, rally and motogp bikes and the gp bikes were a pain the others from his life added were way easier and more fun. But had fine time with 06 to 09/10. The challenges were far and ok season modes.
Ride series is fair for motorbike Forza and Ride 2 is very Forza Motorsport 6 like in a way, but Ride 4 to me felt like a good mix of Forza Motorsport 1 & 2 of the region system to be more restrictive in an interesting way but the AI and driving is so bad like the modern MotoGP games for me to play personally they are so difficult. So to me Ride 1 to 3 are the best bet.
Grid, Gravel (Fair rally races/bosses type game), Wreckfest (races/derbies/funny vehicle variety and fair upgrades and customisation) are fair but vary like a TOCA/DTM/V8 Supercars type many car classes and story or Flatout type successors, not as deep as a GT would be and not as much outside of their racing/rally type car models so it's not the same.
MX vs ATV for dirt bikes and ATVs interested me over time. Reflex (multiplat) while an older one is REALLY good.
I don't know for Legends or All Out I haven't tried Legends yet but have the disk just need to clean up my Xbox One's storage, and I haven't bought All Out Yet. But Reflex was great and Unleashed is ok.
6/7th gen I'd easily say things like Project Gotham Racing 1-4 as good arcade racers and modes or scoring system to really challenge players or Supercar Challenge has fair customisation.
Part 2:
Blur or Split Second as fair 7th gen arcade racers.
Sega GT on Dreamcast or 2002 on OG Xbox are good GT likes, besides Forza Motorsport series of course, R Racing Evolution as the MotoGP 3 crossed with Ridge Racer (multiplat), Enthusia Professional Racing on PS2 as Konami's GT clone or Auto Modellista as Capcom's (multiplat).
GTI Club on PSP/Wii/PS3 is a fair arcade racer by Konami as well with it's hatchbacks, upgrades, customisation, party game like modes with car soccer, tomato, bomb and races.
GT Cube on GameCube in Japan/Pro Series on Wii is ok (more a 3D GT Advance, not great, but not terrible) compared to the GT Advance GBA series as a GT Lite of sorts.
But nowadays unless Indies or odd other stuff like a Grid, Gravel, Wreckfest, Onrush as a MotorStorm kind of successor with it's fair modes.
Project Cars is dead but did a fair job of it's simulation/calendar and such, yeah it's hard to pick a good GT competitor, these days the open worlds are the main 3 mentioned besides Test Drive Solar Crown being.... there and everything else sort of does it's own thing but still feel kind of disappointing to me.
NFS Shift 1 was good as a GT like, 2 and Project Cars 3 were almost the same and just made things worse I found.
I saw an Indie video by Dove that's pretty fair I didn't think much of the games offered but it's something. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBD92kG9QI8&pp=ygUXZG92ZSBpbmRpZSByYWNpbmcgZ2FtZXM%3D
Some researched over the years from whatever publishers tried to compete with, videos by those that look at old racing games, wikipedia pages I'd look across. Some just bought out of curiosity.
Tokyo Extreme Racer/Kaido Racer Drift 1 & 2 are great with a drifting focus but still fair GT like formula in some ways. With TXR more street racing one having returned in the modern era then many of them left on older consoles. I hope they make a modern Drift 1 & 2 sub series type one.
ChoroQ I guess is more cartoony story like adventure.
Even the talking to NPCs and other things are better then GT7 and it should have done similar to TXR Drift 2. Even the dealership if GT7's VR or not was like PGR2's to walk around not just a cutscene.
Fired it up on the PS5 today, linked to my XSX account so it gave me the reward / loyalty cars for owning FM and FH2-5, which is cool. Not done a single race and have 1.9 million credits and 78 cars (18 super wheel spins later!!)...
Feels great playing with the DualSense.
@Dimey pretty cool for save sync, as good as the few others that offer that these days like Bayonetta 1-3 did all on Switch or odd other games forget that do it.
That or GT 3, GT Concept, 4 Prologue and 4 offered of licence tests, credits and other transfers.
Having that many Forza games to sync with makes it pretty good.
MY first GT to GT7 being transfers that are pretty minor in comparison.
I always enjoy features like this if done well.
FM 2023 do you mean or prior ones? I assume not?
For past FH games that cool. Or is it because that's the one you played of FM 2023. I wonder if FM5-7 would count probably not.
@SuntannedDuck2 I think a couple of the earlier Fora games counted too, think I had 7 loyalty cars all in...
New to the series and been playing it for a few days, and honestly...kinda underwhelmed. It looks nice but it's so, so confusiong and the story element is just AWFUL. Frequently find myself wishing for a much simpler game. Just feels like I'm aimlessy wandering around before being roped into an event or novelty race that I have no interest in being a part of. And then I have to put up with the awful voice acting through this forced plot thing. Just weird. I'll keep trying it but right now I can imagine uninstalling by the end of the week. I miss Driveclub.
Excellent review and 8/10 is definitely on the generous side I think, an incredibly overrated game in general. Like most Ubisoft bloat: it's a ton of empty content with no depth. The Burnout games are the way to make these kinds of racers.
Ofc got the Ultimate version of Forza on ps5 pro just like I own it on PC. I know the game and everything but I am a Lil disappointed. Can't join clubs on ps (maybe they'll add the feature after the headstart, I am lvl 47 already) and I am really surprised that to my eyes The Crew Motorfest graphics is quite superior to that in FH.
Does it have VR modes?
@reddevilcat you are spot-on bruv imo.
I suspect feelings on this will vary a lot based on what you are looking for in a racer. As a carPG that I can enjoy while turning my brain off, I find it scratches the itch for me much better than GT7, but I can also see where the bloat would turn others off.
Heresy on here I suspect, but I find GT7 a little bland, a bit sterile. Menus remind me of Pro Evolution Soccer…
Be interesting to see if Forza Motorsport would do numbers on PS5 as a direct competitor… it’s absolute rubbish on PC!
@Cerny I recently got a friend jump to ps5 from Xbox , prior Xbox he had both PS3 and PS4 and his initial reaction was - "adaptive triggers is literally garbage. can u turn them off for all games, so i dont have to go to settings for each game?"
Which lines up with my experience. While it's not garbage, I really only used it on two games. Both astro bot.
Had this on XSX. Bought premium edition on PS5, and linked to the XSX account I own the game on. There are some minor but annoying issues. Partial cross play, sort of. The patch that just released hasn't fixed these.
I don't get the 20 odd cars gifted in messages that new players on PS5 report that they get. No cross-play, but as soon as I trigger a speed trap/danger sign, etc, it immediately brings up my record from my XSX account and uses that. Will show the 3 stars I have on XSX, even if I fail it on PS5. Makes it hard to keep track of things. Says I have 13 or 14 barn finds, yet I have 7 on PS5 and 14 on XSX? Bit of a mess..... Compares my scores against my XSX friends list, and if I beat a record from my XSX account, it updates that! Annoying, to be honest! It's not one or the other...
@reddevilcat I agree, the review is so brief... and if the map is overwhelming, just use the option turn off some of the race types. It's such a niggly complaint.
Review doesn't tell you how the game works, at all, but hey ho. Hopefully people will try it, as it's a total banger...
@Dimey interesting, good to know.
