Sony and Bad Robot Games have today announced an agreement for PlayStation to publish the team's next title on PS5 and PC. With Left 4 Dead creator Mike Booth at the helm, the project will be a four-player co-op shooter.
With more details from PlayStation and the developer to come, CEO at Bad Robot Games, Anna Sweet, said the team is creating a new universe and partnering with PlayStation allows it to bring it to life.
"With the support of PlayStation, we hope to deliver a bold, innovative experience that is truly special for players. I could not be more excited that Mike Booth is at the creative helm, crafting a cooperative adventure that will lead to unforgettable moments with friends."
Sony executive Christian Svensson then added that PlayStation has been impressed with the talent Bad Robot Games has assembled for its new game. "Their unique creative voice and passion for innovating across all forms of interactive entertainment perfectly aligns with SIE’s mission to craft experiences that resonate deeply with players. We can’t wait for gamers to step into the world they’ve been building."
Mike Booth is the big name attached to the project, who is credited as the creator and lead designer of the co-op classic Left 4 Dead. He's also responsible for the game's AI director, which changed how the zombies behaved between every run.

Mike Booth being involved intrigues me. This was also announced for PS5 and PC, so this is further along than I expected. I just hope it actually looks cool because PlayStation's eye for "bold and innovative" things has been spotty at best this gen.
Huh, didn't know J. J. Abrams's Bad Robot had a game division. Love Left 4 Dead, but every time Sony announces a partnership with a well-known developer (individual not studio), it hasn't turned out well so far, so I ain't that excited.
@AinsleyE Yeah, it’s interesting that Sony has tried multiple times to capitalize on individual talent/names when that seems to be a dwindling reason why people buy certain games. There are definitely well-known names in the industry, but not every director with a success is one of those (or deserves it).
This reeks of something Hermen Hulst would do.
Remember Midnight Murder Club?
Left 4 Dead with my friends on 360 was a blast. I miss playing that series. I will keep my eye on this project, as i hope it will be something good.
Sweet, this is the kind of online experience i love, Left 4 Dead still gets replays from me, if its even close to that, its a day one for me and my buddies.
I hope it's better than Back 4 Blood was. For some reason that game just didn't land with me.
I love and still play L4D 1 and 2, so I got hope!
@SodaPop6548 same with me, and I love the Left 4 Dead games. Back 4 Blood just didn't have the same magic.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this one. Here's hoping it turns out as a nice surprise! 🤞🏻
It’s surely going to be better than Back 4 Blood. That being said, it’s bound to be yet another live service! They just have to include it with PS Plus, I don’t see any other way to make this sort of game blow up.
@orvisbean101 also time and time again has it shown that these “big name individuals” aren’t the sole reason why their original games were great in the first place. The creator of Dead Space made the Callisto Protocol and it wasn’t nearly as well made. The creator of Mega Man made Mighty No9 and that just sucked horribly. Even the main creative leads of the Batman Arkham games made the new Suicide Squad game before bailing on Rocksteady at the last minute. Games are way more of a collaborative effort than film and tv, and a lot of the time these games are lightning in a bottle. Having 1 person from the previous game making a new game similar to it most likely means it isn’t going to be anywhere near as good.
This is what Sony should have done instead of having their first party make live service game they should have partnered with second/third parties. Still can't believe blue point was making a live service god of war, horrible management.
Left 4 Dead was really the only Xbox exclusive I was jealous of not being on PlayStation. Very excited to see what this game is.
@PloverNutter Yeah, exactly. Between this, Jade Raymond’s studio (that she left, right?), and the new first-party studio from the guy who created CoD Zombies, Sony is really betting on names.
But, this is also Sony, who has Neil Druckmann, Cory Barlog, and Kojima (kinda), all of whom are arguably big enough to sell a game just from their name.
Tried L4D 1 on PC with my friends back in college and it was pretty fun for a short burst.
But i agreed with what PloverNutter said that well known experience devs isn't always a guaranteed for success.
I like how Sony partners with studios to diversify their lineup of games. And as always, i’m not going to make assumptions and just be cautiously optimistic until we see me more of it. But yeah, this sounds good, cant wait to hear more
The hospital level in L4D1 where you have to wait for the elevator still brings a smile to my face. Hope it turns out better than B4B.
Sounds like a smart idea to me. Interested to see what they're working on.
Wonder if this will be shown at the game awards
L4D was a bit of a zeitgeist franchise. It seemed to capitalise on the meteoric rise of online multi on consoles, and landed in what I'd describe as the sweet spot; between 2007 and 2012. A lot of companies were experimenting with multi and online components back then, including Irrational, Criterion, Black Box, The Behemoth, etc.
I think we're past the experimental phase now. Multi is just a given. It's become a little ugly, in fact. B4B really wasn't brilliant, and does anyone even remember Evolve?
I'm not hoping for its failure, though. I loved L4D and played it obsessively. Here's hoping for a genuine revival.
Not a bad bet on Sony’s part but not mind blowing. Still think there are a lot other more pressing genres that Sony should be investing into.
@AinsleyE
Sure, if you completely ignore the likes of death stranding , sword of the sea , BloodBourne , last guardian etc
My absolute favorite game franchise of all time , love left 4 dead 1 & 2 ❤️
@AinsleyE $ony also isn’t good at making multiplayer games
