Platinum Trophy #5: The Sexy Brutale
Date Earned: 2nd December 2017
Dopamine Index:
While knowing every game that comes out is a feat growing less and less achievable by the day, I like to think I have a higher-than-average level of awareness.
I've never been formally diagnosed with autism, but I'm fairly sure I'm somewhere on the spectrum, because video games are an intense hyperfixation. I don't think I could stop thinking, reading, and writing about games even if I wanted to.
With that said, I had never heard of The Sexy Brutale until Push Square's review, written by longstanding contributor Simon Fitzgerald.
Made by Cavalier Game Studios and the now-defunct Tequila Works, it's a Groundhog Day-style puzzle game in which you must learn a grisly sequence of events at a masquerade party so that you can prevent a number of deaths.
It sounds unpleasant and macabre, but its stylish presentation has an aesthetic I've just now decided to dub "Tim Burton's doll house" — meaning it's dark, but in a fun and humorous way. The jazzy soundtrack certainly helps, too.
To be perfectly honest, I don't recall a huge amount about the game, only that I really loved it.
You pick apart the casino mansion's mysteries with each run through the building, getting a gradually broader picture of who goes where, and when, and why. As a big fan of puzzles, I really got into solving this clockwork conundrum.
One thing I do remember is that the platinum Trophy isn't totally straightforward. Most of the list is concerned with saving each character and uncovering certain plot points, but a full deck of 52 cards are scattered throughout the mansion, and you need to find every one.
Tracking those down sounds like a chore, but what it meant was I was extremely observant as I scoured the house. That's obviously a quality you need for a puzzle adventure game like this anyway, so it never felt like many extra steps were needed.
I'm really glad to have been made aware of this game from Simon's glowing write-up, because I may well have skipped over it entirely and missed out on an engrossing, very tightly designed puzzle box.
Cheers, The Sexy Brutale.

I’d heard of this game but knew nothing about it until reading this. Sounds a bit like Blue Prince.
The Sexy Brutale is such a beautiful, little gem of a puzzle game. It deserves all the praise and appreciation! Glad to hear my review highlighted an otherwise missable title to you that you really enjoyed.

I played it a bit back when it was 'free' from PS+. While i really enjoyed the artstyle and premise of using time loop to preventing someone getting killed as well find the killer, i just kinda sucks with the puzzle lol. But maybe someday i'll give it another try and used more of my brain cell to solve the puzzle 😁
Nonetheless, it's an interesting Plat trophy
@graymamba "either plat something more worthy… or move aside before this series dies a death"
Lol this is sounds very elitist. Let Stephen platinum whatever games he wants.
@PuppetMaster maybe you misunderstood… what I’m saying is, that if he continues to simply plat what he likes, the lack of engagement will kill this series. As a plat-hunter myself, I want this series to succeed.
@graymamba I respect someone’s choices of games to plat but I also agree with what you are saying. I’d prefer to read someone’s platinum journey’s for a Souls game or Metal gear 4 to be honest. Which makes me think of Adam McDermotts platinum journey series videos on YouTube I don’t know if you’ve ever seen him?. He does some great videos on the trials and tribulations as a plat hunter, his Metal gear 4 run is a perfect example of how bad/annoying a trophy run can be, and how exhilarating it is to finally get it done. LudiXP too she’s got some good ones.
First game I dont also have the platinum for, my streak is over. Never heard of this game tbh but does sound interesting.
@GamingGod aye I’ve watched many of Adam McDermott’s platinum journeys… and the takeaway I’ve always had is that the tough plats get the views.
Also, in reference to your comment… I’ve plat’d every souls game & MGS4 😉
@graymamba nice work! Is mgs4 as bad as it looks from the video? 😁. I have it loaded into the PS3 ready to go but I’m literally scared of that one 🤣. I actually chose the utter grind of treasure hunter & FF13 over it recently. I really REALLY want that MGS4 plat! From souls series I’ve done Bloodborne and Demons. Both two of my all time favourite games ❤️. Yeah just a quick canter through his videos proves your point there lol
@GamingGod it’s not as bad as is generally reported tbh, nowhere near as difficult as I found MGS2… which seems to get far less notoriety for some reason.
As far as your trophy hunting goes, I did the FFXIII plat last year as it goes… one hell of a grind! Bloodborne actually popped my cherry as an interesting aside. 😉
@graymamba cool. I’m going to do more research on the best way to attempt it then cus I have to have that one!!. I usually run 2/3 plats simultaneously so I don’t get bored of a game too much. I’ll do one on PS5 and one on PS3 or Vita just to keep using the platforms. Although atm I’m doing two PS5 games, Diablo4 and Lego horizons. Ones a cheese I’ll admit but my daughter loves it so we are co-opping lol. FF13 is a beast and it’s actually the second time I’ve done it.. don’t @ me 🙈. Did you Death skill ochu? 🤪. And on Bloodborne exactly the same
Hell yeah I death skilled ochu… & all the adamantortoises that I had to farm! 🤣
I actually messed up my MGS4 run a bit though. I’m sure the minimum playthroughs was around 8 if you got everything perfect… but I had to do another two or three if memory serves 😡
@graymamba haha oh god yeah the adamantoise! He suffered big time on mine too! Last Titan trial was a pain too velocytrix or whatever he’s called. Hated that fight but I think I’m one of a handful of people who actually love FF13 so much I had to do it again on my new profile. Yes it’s the amount of playthroughs that’s putting me off mgs4 and how easily you can end up messing up like the flashbacks trophy or not using enough health packs etc. Did you keep notes?
@GamingGod did I keep notes? 🤣
I have notebooks dedicated to my plats lol… my gaming is minutely scheduled up to New Years Day 2034!
@graymamba 😆😆😆😆 oh that’s epic you legend! I’m not the only one praise the lowered !! 😉. I’ll make an admission.. I’m actually doing a 100% completion profile but don’t tell anyone 😌
Might I just add, comment #3 was meant to be constructive. I’d appreciate a review.
@graymamba You misunderstood that this feature isn't about very challenging and worthy platinum trophy to get by your own standard. But it's about games that looks fun for Stephen and how he enjoyed the process to platinum it while promoting those games for people who never played it.
If we're just counting what platinum trophy that looks really challenging and worth to flex then there's no need to have a feature like this every week. Stephen can just write the top 10 list of most challenging trophy in history like Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Ghost n Goblins Ressurection, Super Meat Boy etc etc and call it a day 🤷♂️
@PuppetMaster well in that case, to paraphrase Ivan Drago: “If it dies… it dies”
@PuppetMaster Ngl I did laugh at "worthy" lol because I'm pretty sure Stephen is recounting his plats in the order he earned them in. Like is he just supposed to omit the ones other people don't like/care for? Idk, that whole thing was a bit weird. This is his personal journey after all, others will either go along for the ride or they won't.
@JackiePriest basically yeah, omit the chaff and elucidate us with the story that led to that prime wheat ffs, this **** ain’t rocket science!
Removed - trolling/baiting
@graymamba You're free to write your own "worthy" platinum trophy list on your blog, youtube, or whatever 🤷♂️
But who did you called "scrubs"?

I loved The Sexy Brutale and wish that Cavalier Games was doing something else.
We're only at number 5 and there's already been 2 games I'd never heard of. Enjoying this very much so far!
@Doctor_BK It's more like one big Majoras Mask side quest than Blue Prince.
I know the term hidden gem gets used a lot but I feel with The Sexy Brutale it fits really well. It's a really good game that never received enough praise when it was released.
@graymamba Hi! I appreciate any and all feedback, but I think you might have misinterpreted this feature's purpose. It is not (and won't ever be) about my attempts to earn the toughest platinum Trophies.
Going Platinum is intended to be a very casual wander through my personal history; I'm looking back at every game I've platinumed, reflecting on them, what motivated getting all their Trophies, and throwing in some anecdotes about certain Trophies here and there. It sounds like that's not what you're looking for.
I understand that you're more interested in only the hardest platinums out there, but that's not what this feature is. I wanted to make that perfectly clear
@Quintumply that’s fine, I’ve just been consuming platinum content for almost 10 years now, and I have an understanding of what gets hits and what doesn’t. Generally trophy hunters like to hear about the trials and tribulations that someone experienced when attempting a challenging plat-chase… even if they end up failing.
As I said in my original constructive feedback, which was unceremoniously removed due to being adjudged to be unconstructive… it’s just my two penneth and was only provided as I want all trophy hunting content to succeed.
@graymamba I appreciate what you're saying, and I get the appeal of chasing those challenging platinums. Hopefully my series offers something slightly different.
You don't need to worry about whether Going Platinum succeeds or fails; it will continue, regardless of performance, until I run out of platinum Trophies to talk about. I hope you get some enjoyment from it along the way
@Quintumply I hope so too. If I see you discuss a platinum that engenders a shudder down my spine in future, I’ll be sure to click 😉
This is a great game that I haven’t heard anyone really mention since I played it. Great puzzle design, art direction and score. The atmosphere is playfully gruesome.
I’m enjoying this series, and hope to pick up some recommendations for games I haven’t yet played, since our tastes seem to be similar.
@Doctor_BK it’s nothing like Blue Prince imo, but still worth a play.
The thing that surprises me most about this series is how seemingly random each of the game choices are. Undertale, Sexy Brutale, The Witness, Tales from the Borderlands etc.
@graymamba to present another perspective I find this series FAR more interesting than someone just spending time on grindy trophies, most of which don’t take much skill, just time and perseverance, and often make you end up hating the game more than if you just played it normally then stop once you’ve had your fill.
The reality is so many trophy lists are just bad.
@themightyant as I initially stated in my comment that was removed, so I forgive you for not being aware of that… it’s just my two pence worth ie. my opinion that this editorial series would gain more traction if it detailed a trophy journey that required the gamer to actually overcome challenges and adversity. While I still believe that opinion is correct, I’m only too aware that it is simply my opinion.
Really enjoyed this one when I played it. Was fun, but definitely had some darker undertones. It was my 69th platinum. Got it in 2021. If it ever got a rerelease on PS5, would do it again.
