It might feel like PlayStation is throwing the majority of its first-party games on PC these days, but the company's top dogs want to ensure the value of PS5 isn't diminished.
In a recent Sony business interview, SIE president and CEO Hideaki Nishino and studio business group CEO Hermen Hulst explain the approach to expanding PlayStation's reach.
"We continue to look for new and innovative ways to broaden our reach and bring our content and service to the players," says Nishino. "The value of the PlayStation console is that [it's] still the best place to play, and it's growing its reach in even broader ways."
Hulst elaborates, talking about how the company is looking to grow its audience on other platforms while retaining the value and draw of its first-party software.
"It's important to realise that we're really thoughtful about bringing our franchises off-console to reach new audiences, and that we're taking a very measured and deliberate approach in doing that," he says. "Particularly on the single-player side, our tentpole titles; they're such a point of differentiation for the PlayStation console. They're real showcases of the performance and quality of the hardware, so we want to ensure that players get the best experience from these titles. We're very thoughtful about how, and if, we bring these titles to other platforms."
Nishino adds that the company needs to "constantly understand our players' patterns and behaviours, and ensure that we serve them appropriately".
It's very corporate speak, but it pretty much echoes sentiments from Sony in the past on this subject.
The platform holder is bringing some of its flagship titles to PC, but it's doing so a year or more after a game's initial launch, giving priority to its players on PS5 and PS4.
It's a different matter with any multiplayer games, such as Helldivers 2, which benefit most from the wider pool of players when PC is included on day one.
It sounds as though this approach is set to continue, with games like Ghost of Yotei or Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet appearing on PC at least a year down the line from their PS5 releases. Meanwhile, multiplayer-focused games like Fairgames or even Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will likely launch on both simultaneously.
Do you think Sony's business plan regarding PC ports is the right way to do it? Discuss in the comments section below.

I'm still not sure how they concluded that dreams was not worthy of a PC port to keep that community alive.
Imagine the outrage if they port Astro Bot and mandate the Dualsense controller
Guess Sony are hoping people with access to both will double dip. When you get the PC version a year or so later, it does tend to feel a bit like a remaster, I know I'm always tempted to do that if I have the spare cash.
Surprised they haven't ported Demon's Souls yet, or Shadow of the Colossus for that matter
Press (X) to Doubt
I'll believe it if they bring back the "Only on PlayStation" branding. Until then I'll continue to presume everything will release on PC.
They've practically ported every notable title to PC already with no regard to it being a "tentpole" console game. The only exception being Gran Turismo 7 (a cross-gen game). The only other games they haven't ported yet are Astro Bot (too soon), Demon's Souls (too old?) and Destruction All-Stars (poor reception).
Even their latest single player releases have been releasing day and date: Lego Horizon, Until Dawn Remake, Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster.
I think they should just release the multiplayer stuff and title they published without owning the IP, such as Death Stranding and Stellar Blade.
For all Pc players it is a good thing if Sony brings them Playstation games and I am all for it. I don’t play on Pc for the simple reason that the ps5 is cheaper for me. Sony is also making more money from porting to Pc. Don’t know how much they do for sure. I think the only thing they think hard about is if they make money buy doing it or not.
Makes sense, I'll never own another Xbox now since I can just play their games on PC or Playstation and if Sony ever put all their games on PC, then the Playstation would go as well
Sony need to take great care on this front as without Xbox really offering competition, their main competitors are now PC and Nintendo. Whatever anyone says, exclusives help sell the console ecosystem and retain customers, and the knock on effect to others can be significant (ie when someone buys 1 because another has), and I have seen this first hand several times over the last few years.
They may not see PC as being a competitor due to (currently fairly major) issues inherent to PC which just do not exist on console, and some people just would not make the switch, but others would.
A promise of 60fps on PS5 5 ish years ago, and more recently the release of the PS5 Pro are things that have swayed me to stay on console and not move to PC - All things being equal I much prefer the console model but game performance is a red line for me.
All it needs though is for some of those PC only problems to be ironed out (eg setup/drivers complication, initial cost starting from scratch, power consumption etc) and it becomes a more tempting prospect.
Can we talk about how they havent ported Demon Souls yet despite being a launch game
And they also never gave a 60fps patch to Bloodborne
Dont know why Sony seems to neglect Soulsborne games
I still think PC and console are very different markets with very different customers, so a careful strategy is critical. I don't buy all the apocalyptic talk of all digital, all streaming, all open platforms, especially considering who's actively championing all of those!
At the very least, I can't see Sony saying, "You don't need to buy our games OR our consoles!" like Xbox.
They need to work on actually releasing more first part titles these last two years have been sparse.
Sounds like a reasonable and measured approach. It’s smart to not just port everything without thinking. One of the pillars of their business model is their exclusive games, so a measured porting approach is the best way
Smart approach is a good thing some games i completely agree release d1 on pc and ps5 other should stay at least 1 yr on ps5 i just hope sony don't rethink the pc strategy because putting on pc is very good for sony more platforms=more sales
Like others have said Demon Souls should be a given, more pople to play one of the best remakes inrecent memory.
There's still a ton of PS4 era games Sony never ported to PC
Bloodborne (the obvious one)
Ratchet 2016
Shadow of the Colossus
The Last Guardian
Driveclub
GT Sport
Knack 1 and 2
Concrete Genie
Infamous Second Son
The Order 1886 (very unlikely)
Gravity Rush 1 and 2
Dreams
@Americansamurai1 Exactly. Their measured approach seems to be put out 1 game a year and a year later put it on PC. Seems more lazy than measured to me. 🤷♂️
At the end of the day it’s going to come down to what makes them the most money. If it is putting them on PC, they will.
@rjejr yeah, Herman is trash worse head of PlayStation studios ever. Should have never removed shu.
Haven't they ported nearly everything this gen aside from Astro Bot and Demon's Souls? And the gaps with major releases seem to be diminishing as well.
I'll bet my life (current market value: $68,679) Gran Turismo will never be on PC.
@mariomaster96 I guess they hate money
The wording of his reasoning, aside from being plain corporate BS, is clearly general, refers to all other platforms, not PC specifically.
Anyway, the gist of it was already implied by the lack of PC ports for some older PS exclusive games like Demon's Sous, Bloodborne, Astro's Playroom etc, even though ALL of their other exclusives already have one.
They're clearly very particular about what's ported and where, and some of their IP's Sony won't share with any other platform.
Not yet anyway.
My guess is that, like any big corporation, if, at any point in the future, they consider there's more money to be made by making ports to other consoles (and/or PC for those that don't have one), they'll come back and revise this strategy like that 🫰
Money talks first and foremost, no matter what BS they declare in their statements.
I wonder why the change though. Did Sony seen Nintendo are doing really well without porting their games for PC?
Or the PC ports doesn't do well?
Or they just can't stand anymore the whiny crying from PC mustard race that always lead to review bomb their games?
But whatever it is, i'm glad that finally Sony higher ups learn the lesson that they need to keep most if not all their 1st party games as full exclusives if they want their console stay at very high value.
@crackeastwood Plenty of PS1-PS3, PSP, and Vita games never get port to PC either.
etc
As an armchair CEO, why not use releases on PC as hype/marketing for new PS5 releases? When you are 3 months from releasing Ghost of Yotei, release Ghost of Tsushima. If you are 3 months from releasing a new GoW, then release the old one on PC.
You generate the PC revenue, but also possibly entice a PC player to pick up a PS5 that doesn't want to wait years to pick up the next one.
It needs to be years though, not a year. With many player's backlogs so large, waiting a year for a release is not much of an issue. Waiting 4-5 years or possibly forever is a different story. If gamers expect it to release on PC in a year, then why not wait?
Funny as I feel MS and Sony are slowly pushing people to PC either on purpose or unintentionally.
I know people have been calling the death of console for years, incorrectly so far, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t exist in a few generations time.
This is a smart strategy because Sony has been able to port games like God of War to PC without damaging their console sales. Even though almost all PlayStation games this gen are available on PC, the PS5 is still selling as well as the PS4 and may even outpace it in the future.
Going full day-and-date on PC did harm Xbox console sales to some extent. Though, to be fair, Xbox's brand isn't nearly as powerful as PlayStation's.
@Dodoo While I agree to an extent, I would say a large portion of players/familes aren't willing to spend 3-5K on a decent PC rig.
I'm still surprised the Demon Souls remake isn't on pc yet. The game released when the ps5 released.
I remember when they claimed Horzion was an anomaly 5 years ago. Boy things have escalated since then.
@Oram77 you don’t need anywhere near that for a PC comparable to a PS5…you could do that for like $800 nowadays
@Shad361 Good luck playing Moster Hunter wilds on that build...
i'm sure they do, which is why 90% of their ps4/ps5 catalogue has already made it to pc 0_o
after this gen comes to a close, hopefully sony will come to the realization that their pc porting efforts did not help the brand and may have in fact lost them revenue in the long term due to a shrinking playstation userbase. remember, losing a user from your ecosystem (to pc) means you lose all software purchased from said user, not just the specific sony published games that got ported to pc. that is a very bad tradeoff from a business perspective. i have no doubt that sony will lose countless millions of users now that they have opened the floodgate to pc.
also, let's face it, some of their pc ports did not perform well at all. the costs to port the game to pc vs the sales may have even lost them money in some cases.
if nintendo took this road, they would lose at least 25% of their platform install base without question. maybe up to 50%, who knows. nintendo is wise enough not to even flirt with the idea unless they were in a dire situation and had no choice (and even then they would hate the idea haha).
@Oram77 if base PS5 which is weaker can play it I don’t see why a rtx 3080 would not.
And that’s just one game out of thousands on steam.
they should stop porting their games to pc, or at least port only previous generation games to buil hype for the new games.
and use the porting company they bought to port and remaster old games to the ps5, imagine having all of sony catalog in one place, that would be really good for the fans.
for me, not buying any games with day one on pc, if they give free online to pc players why do your users have to pay for the same thing?
As someone done with console at the moment and totally switched to PC who's latest and only launch date purchase in years is a PlayStation Studios game (Stellar Blade) I say keep the PC ports coming.
From a cash perspective, the only major blunder Sony is making with PC is the region restrictions to the same markets they have consoles in. No idea why they're knee capping revenue in one of the biggest reasons for them to do PC.
For console I really don't think there's much overlap. I have no desire to play on console hardware at all so long as I have a much better PC.. the only thing that would make me play on console now isn't exclusives. It's if Nvidia prices just make it impossible to continue and ps prices don't feel similarly extortionate except more spread out over time. For console customers, they're not going to splash or the high upfront cost of PC without being wholly dedicated. PS5 is a "cheap" (up front but over time arguably more expensive) zero effort PC. The two don't really overlap much in market. Right now Nvidia sells PlayStation better than any marketing campaign Sony can buy.
I get why they and some fans like to stick to the exclusive software model but I still think that era ended long ago. It works for Nintendo because Nintendo has a captive audience Sony doesn't really. They did in the PS2 era but that ship sailed as they moved to become cheap packaged PCs. With PS2 they were competing with Nintendo. The exclusives just aren't why someone chooses between ps and pc anymore. It worked when consoles were really cheap and PC was really expensive and consoles completed directly. An exclusive isn't the consoles selling point anymore. Its size, ease of use, and, (seemingly) lower cost of entry are.
If pc hardware becomes cheap and much easier to use, PlayStation is in trouble no matter what exclusives it has.. But thankfully Nvidia is here to prevent such things 😂
They port everything this generation except GT and Demon Souls. This will devalue the hardware platform in the long run. Sony should look at Nintendo, not at Microsoft. PC in all its form will be the biggest competitor for the next generation.
@PuppetMaster they probably saw that their games are heavily pirated, hardly sell any copies, the ports are so bad that they're hurting the brand (instead of giving PC gamers a reason to switch to PS consoles), and that the profits are so small it's not worth the effort.
@WALK21 that would make sense, so of course they won't do it.
“sOnY sHoULD lOoK aT nInTenDo”
yeah, nah, they shouldn’t. i know nintendos the golden child with all the bias and get out of jail free cards, but let’s not pretend that nintendo wouldn’t suffer a big loss if they started porting their games to PC; nobody values their horrible hardware, people are forced to buy it to play smash bros, mario kart & zelda.
Playstation will always have its place for the mere fact that there are people out there that genuinely prefer a console with the conveniency and simplicity that’s actually powerful enough to run modern games efficiently with maximum third party support - nintendo doesn’t provide that & hasnt for decades
@naruball Yeah that makes sense. But now with less PC ports, i guess they will use Nixxes more as support studio which i hope it can speed up some projects.
@crackeastwood it is strange considering souls does so well on pc as for shadow of the colossus it won't do gang busters but they'd definitely make a profit
In terms of IPs, sure they will push the big sales ones and ignore the other types out there. So who cares. Otherwise eh. For those that like a console OS/experience by all means I enjoy it and I treat the Windows store apps differently on Xbox then I do on PC due to how PC app access can be.
But yeah IPs on PC, I mean, they can be particular and that's understandable but if it's sales driven than audience driven then well who'd care anyway. XD
I'd easily praise them for their niche IPs to PC whether via Bandai Namco or others, but otherwise I don't have much high hopes for many of them either happening even if an audience would like them to exist.
@Dodoo Yeah, it kinda feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy: by fear of consoles going away in the future, Sony starts releasing games on PC. And by doing that, it slowly erodes the value of its own brand, pushing people towards the other platform. And that drives growth in the PC ecosystem, attracting not only players by also investments, thus creating a virtuous cycle.
I don't know, by this statement sounds a bit like backtracking to me.
@Art_Vandelay yes agreed.
Funny you say about the backtracking too as that was my thought as I first read it! Will be interesting to see if Sony will be so forthcoming releasing on PC in the future…
@Dodoo Both the PC and live service initiatives have been fool's errands from the outset. Sony should stick to their guns instead of blindly chasing the latest trend. Nintendo has been mightily successful by doing exactly that.
Nietzsche's "Become who you are" is one of the most powerful quotes ever, and it totally applies here.
