Jun 2025 USA Sales: PS4's Record Launch Month Stomped by Switch 2

1) Who actually cares? (records are made to be broken)
2) A new console sells faster then an older console (mind blown)
3) PS5 had Covid to deal with (that's not an excuse, just facts)
4) Special shout out to KCD2 for being 6th.

More than one analyst was expecting Switch 2 to have the biggest console launch of all time, and it seems to be meeting those expectations.

One thing that's really helped is that Nintendo appears to have been stockpiling units for launch for awhile, as, despite the record breaking launch, it's been a remarkably easy console to procure.

Hope Sony is taking notes for the PS6 launch.

@Ralizah I don’t think Sony fumbled the PS5 launch. Just had the special circumstances to deal with. Also, don’t mention PS6. Not ready to by my 4th PS console within a decade’s time.

Honestly I've never liked Nintendo, but it SELLS.
I might grab a Switch (1) sometime in the future though, to play the third party stuff I missed.

Crazy Switch 2 sold that well considering it has, what? 2 exclusives? Then topped off with the absolute greed of charging $80 for digital and $90 for physical, nothing done to address joystick drift, and overcharging for peripherals, it's amazing I guess. I think another factor though was the limited supply of PS5's at launch. For the first 3 months, I checked online and couldn't find one. Then read an article that stated 3 AM was the best time to check at Target. My dog woke me up to be let out the next night at that time, I checked while waiting, and sure enough it was there. When I picked up it later that day, the cashier told me I had the golden Wonka ticket.

The report that was never corrected after the press details were released, because the EU pricing came out first and everyone pulled a Sony and directly converted it by changing the currency symbol instead of waiting less than half an hour for the US info to be released that says....$80.

Not interested with switch 2. Sold my switch oled after im done with mh rise/sunbreak. Im more interested with upcoming steam deck 2. Bring it on Valve!

@Haruki_NLI Maybe they haven't done it yet, but I guarantee by the end of the year they will. Same as how last generation started at a $60 price point, and went up to $70 after a few months.

@Steeleye50 I mean, sure? I guess? I doubt it though. Pokemon Legends Z-A is $60 on Switch, $70 on Switch 2, and if The Pokemon Company isn't doing it, then Splatoon Raiders, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors and Metroid Prime 4 sure as hell won't either.

Hilariously though, and this barely gets talked about, over here in the sunny(?) UK, Nintendo is the only platform holder to have their games be cheaper digitally than physically. You know, that thing people wanted for years.

I wanna buy Donkey Kong Bananza? £66.99 for physical, £57.99 digital. Mario Kart World? £74.99 physical, £66.99 digital.

If I go over to PlayStation and want Ghost of Yotei? £70 regardless. No adjustment for currency value, no cheaper digital (Because why would it be, its pure profit?), just the same number as the US.

If we want anything to become standardised, it's actually applying exchange rates to games, and cheaper digital copies than physical.

@Haruki_NLI that's a good point and I do agree with you. Just for me, this is where I jump off the bandwagon. I've been a console gamer since the Intellivision. I've owned every Nintendo system except the Wii U. I just can't abide by this greed anymore. I know Playstation and Xbox will follow suit. It would be one thing if we got complete editions of games, but you know there are still going to be broken, buggy messes at launch with a greater price point and still paid DLC. Can you imagine how expensive the next generation's batch of Ubisoft games will be? Do you think they are going to improve? Of course they will eventually fall back to their model of releasing broken, buggy messes that are carbon copies of old games, and they will charge $80 and up for it.

@Steeleye50 Then you could say Xbox S/X was a lot worse with 0 exclusive for a year. I also dont see any game sold for 90 USD, not sure you mean other countries dollar. The price raise was from 70 to 80 for some games, which will be continually updated. Even DK was priced at 70.

@Steeleye50 help me quickly, how many exclusives did PS5 had at launch? Not Incl. Remakes/remasters, but real PS5 unique games? Or even now, after so many years? I guess in times of backwards compatibility this is not really an indicator for sales performance anymore.
Beside the high price point for new Nintendo games, all other issues you mentioned were already present on the Sw1 and it did not stop its success, therefor I would be surprised if it REALLY would impact the sales.

Here's An Updated PS5 Launch Title List
The PlayStation 5 launched with several exclusive titles, including Demon's Souls, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Destruction AllStars, and Astro's Playroom. These games were either exclusive to the PS5 or offered enhanced versions for the console.

@mrbone Nintendo initially reported on their website when they announced the Switch 2 that games would be $80 digitally, and $90 physically. We haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure it's coming. I know with Xbox I've always thought the consoles were the superior one, but there's only been a small handful of exclusives I've wanted to play of theirs over the years. Fortunately, they are now available on PS5. I hope that pendulum swings the other way though!

@Steeleye50 you are just confirming the point I'm trying to make. Only Asteo and destruction allstars were exclusives. All other games are either remakes or available on PS4 as well.
Following this logic, Switch 2 had quite the line up of Games at launch. Just not many exclusives. Similar like PS5 😉

Realeasing games on several systems simultaneously IS EXACTLY not the same thing as an exclusive. Therefor I wanted to put it into perspective to PS5 which was similar at Launch day and even now.
The point I want to make is, that exclusives are not necessary for a systems success.
