Re: The Last of Us HBO's Henry and Sam Revealed, Alongside Two New Characters

@nessisonett They make interesting antagonists in the sense of their aims are noble in trying to cure the disease but at a cost to other. An end justifies the means outlook which we can easily say is horrible in our comfortable world but in theirs it's understandable.

I wouldn't necessarily say they were revolutionary though. They're just another faction trying to save humanity from the virus.

P.S. I haven't played TLOU2 yet so if they've gone way beyond their MMO in the first I'm unaware.

Re: You're All Wrong! GTA 6 Won't Have the Franchise's First Female Protagonist

@stridernyc "You can have a great story as well as make sure different races and genders are represented."

You can, but you only need to look at the recent M-SHE- U movies/series and most BBC dramas these days to reveal when the diversity box ticking takes priority over story.

Representation has only taken priority in the media in the last decade or so, really gathering steam in the last few years, which shows in the decline of quality of TV and other media products of late.

Re: You're All Wrong! GTA 6 Won't Have the Franchise's First Female Protagonist

The_Moose

@WadeIsInsane But the point is this stuff isn't monumental. Games have been doing this since their inception. Samus and Lara Croft, both video game icons, were conceived, active and kicking ass decades ago.

Those who are celebrating this are quite late. I honestly blame the pervasive narrative out there that there is apparently a huge contingent of the population who are racist, sexist and transphobic and that we must make a big song and dance about the addition of any character who ticks some "victim" box to a video game or movie.

Little do such people realise there are many iconic characters in history who fit the bill for what should be "celebrated" today.

Re: You're All Wrong! GTA 6 Won't Have the Franchise's First Female Protagonist

The_Moose

@Gloamin Yeah, I've thought that for a while. It seems things like this can't be unseen by either side.

A female protagonist at one time was just taken as maybe a bit of a quirk but certainly nothing to get excited or upset over.

Now one side screams about how "empowering" it is and brilliant for bringing "those who we deem victims of the western straight white patriarchy" to the fore. The other side can only see it as either "well they only did it to please the woke diversity obsessed Twitter mobs" or feel the need to tell us in no uncertain terms "I ain't playing as no hoe".

Frightening thing is this narrative is played out in the media and out on the streets more and more, even the most rational "I don't care I just want everyone to get on with each other and make the best of life" people are getting sucked into this vortex.

The more people get sucked in, the more it gets ramped up and nastier it becomes.

Re: GTA 6 Has a Female Protagonist, New Report Claims

@zupertramp If people do hold those views, then they are a minority in the west.

Certainly not 50% of the USA or any western country for that matter. Other countries outside the west perhaps.

There is also a fair amount of ignorance in the condemnation of masses of your fellow countrymen simply because they disagree with your politics. Yet a bit of self awareness is difficult to come by in some people.

Re: Former BioWare Writer Discusses Alternate Ending for the Mass Effect Trilogy

The_Moose

I finished the ME trilogy only last year for the first time without the extended ending.

It did feel somewhat anti-climatic but upon reflection I think people expect too much of the writers. Are they really going to be able to develop so many different endings based on the vast number of choices people make throughout the trilogy.

Ultimately it could be seen to be that no matter how you got the job done the ending was also going to be the same, as the Catalyst alludes to.

@korgon I agree with you, it wasn't that much different (if you took the destroy ending which I imagine Bioware will make canon for ME4).

Re: New Gameplay Footage of the Cancelled DOOM 4 Shows What Could Have Been

The_Moose

2016 was a perfect game. It did everything that it needed to do right. Eternal was okay but it felt like another series, the colourful weapon pickups, the much heavier emphasis on platforming. I also felt that the Doom Slayer was pretty weak as the difficulty was ramped right up.

2016 made you feel like a badass, Eternal made you feel like you were doing your first CrossFit session at the gym.

Re: Gaming Spend Will Continue to Decline in US as Living Costs Increase, Says NPD Report

Try harder? How about words of the former Danish PM, will they suffice?

Also you said Democratic Socialist in your earlier post and are now saying social democracy. They're both very different. In fact adding the word "social" before something doesn't really make any difference to it. Democracy is a democracy and states which have taken up the mantle of socialism are never democratic in practice.

Also welfare policies are socialist by and large but the country employing them doesn't have to be a socialist country. The NHS is a socialist policy but the UK isn't socialist.

More representative democratic systems? There's good and bad to all different electoral systems. That's a very subjective meaning which doesn't really hold up.

Also the personal debt levels of individuals to GDP are much higher in the Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Not something to boast about.

Re: Gaming Spend Will Continue to Decline in US as Living Costs Increase, Says NPD Report

The_Moose

"So if we have neolib leaders, how can we also have had an expansion of welfare as you claim?"

Welfare is an enormous spend for the government. The tax credit scheme which prevents employers from having to pay competitive wages whilst making people reliant on them and this continuing to vote for the party that feeds them.

There are so many other things that can be done but no politicians would dare confront these issues as there is too much money being made by certain groups.

We have high VAT which is a regressive tax which effects the poor more than anyone, constant and largely unchecked immigration which keeps wages flat, an NHS which has more and more money thrown at it every year with no improvement. All these things are having an adverse effect on the poor and coupled up with rampant COVID spending has led to inflation.

Whenever the state gets involved in most things, they usually get way worse. Look how quickly during COVID the food shortages in shops were resolved by private companies, yet the NHS is still in a mess.

By the way adding the word "social" before another word doesn't mean anything. Democracy is democracy.

Re: Gaming Spend Will Continue to Decline in US as Living Costs Increase, Says NPD Report

The_Moose

@Richnj Ok....I don't understand your point.

We certainly haven't been run well for the last 40 years with an expanding welfare state making more and more people rely on government handouts and subsidising inefficient industries.

That's a failing on politicians.

My point was we have the highest tax burden in 70 years, in those years high taxes were most synonymous with socialist governments of the time.
