Sony is scrapping the PSN brand and it doesn’t look like it’ll be getting a new name.

Earlier this week, we pointed out how the PSN Status Page on PlayStation.com was edited late last year to remove any mention of the PlayStation Network.

And now we’ve noticed a similar thing in the PS5 settings.

If you browse to Settings > Network you’ll get an overview of your connection status. But where this used to read ‘PlayStation Network: Signed In’ it now reads ‘PlayStation: Signed In’.

The PSN logo has also been removed from the image, while the list of options below reads ‘View Service Status’ and not ‘View PlayStation Network Status’ like it used to.

This practically confirms to us that there’s no rebrand planned here; the PSN name is simply being completely phased out. It seems from now on you’ll simply have a PlayStation account.

As we pointed out in a recent article, the PSN name has largely become redundant over the past few years. It’s only ever really referenced when Sony’s servers are down.

We do wonder how long the name will remain a common reference point for players. As we pointed out last week when Sony’s servers briefly went offline, we saw a huge increase in traffic from the search term ‘PSN Down’.

Perhaps in the future people will simply search ‘PS5 Down’. Of course, we imagine Sony’s hoping to have as little downtime as possible.
