It's alright. I mean, hey, it's something new and it looks fairly cool. My issue is that the widgets pretty much block actually being able to see most of the backgrounds.
FYI, the free DOA6 Core Fighters version is available now, at least in NA. It is pretty barebones, no story mode and only has 4 playable characters, but hey, the price is right. I could even see myself just spending the $3-4 for my favorite fighter, Christi, and enjoying many hours for an extremely minimal investment.
@ShogunRok So more Rune Factory-ish? Side note: I wonder if there is any chance that Rune Factory 4 and 5 will get ported to PS4 since they are coming to Switch.
@Azikira You can play multiplayer. I personally only played one match and I'm not certain if it let's you play all the modes, but I don't recall any choices being greyed out. I'm still on the fence about buying the game, but this definitely pushed me closer to pulling the trigger on it.
Since the update my health bar doesn't disappear when set to dynamic. After playing with a clean screen for 40+ hours, it's pretty brutal to have that sticking around all the time.
@xMEADx I'm not really sure how the price compares to the rest of the world, but I did take a look at the price in GB where it is £40 per year. A quick check of the exchange rates shows that equals $51.88 US. So, the price for PS+ is actually ~17% higher in the US than in Britain. I'm not sure how the US and British prices compare with other countries, though.
@FullbringIchigo Dude, we don't pay anywhere near 20% sales tax in the US. It varies significantly from state to state, and the tax rate in some states is ZERO. The increase in price was because Sony increased the price. Tax is added as a separate charge to the total price anyway, it is not incorporated into the "list" price for an item or service. It doesn't work like VAT in the EU. If is was just sales tax added to the previous PS+ price of $50, the total cost (in my state) would be $53.50, not $60. Sales tax is even broken out as an additional line item charge on receipts, almost like a mini-spread sheet.
Not exactly stellar, but personally it's a good month for this lineup since I'm one of the unlucky people that had their WiFi broken with the 4.50 update so I can't download anything anyway. I guess that qualifies as a silver lining sort of thing.
@ZurapiiYohane64 I'd start with AC2. The first game is ok but repetitive and Ubisoft really nailed down the AC formula with the second game. Also, it's the start of the Ezio trilogy, so you will understand the entire story arc if you want to play more AC games. You can pick them up used for next to nothing for the PS3 or you can get the entire collection on PS4.
Black Flag is also really fun, but it is very different from earlier games with a stronger emphasis on being a pirate than an assassin.
@leucocyte Go ahead and give FFXV a try. Other than recognizing some monsters that are long running staples in the series and gil being the unit of currency, it is a completely stand-alone story. Any confusion you have about the story will likely be shared among all of us who have played it, and that includes FF veteran or newcomer. I just finished the main story about an hour ago, and it's been an enjoyable 2 weeks. It's an accessible game, and while I don't think it's the best FF, it's a good place to introduce yourself to the series. I would probably wait a few weeks til it's been patched a time or two more though.
I feel like I've gotten to know the characters from watching the subtitled FF XV Brotherhood anime series. It's going to be a bit disconcerting to be forced to adjust to hearing those same characters speaking in English. It will probably be fine once I've adjusted, but for a few hours it might break gameplay immersion for me.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi NMS isn't online only. It will work just fine without an internet connection (good thing too during the 1st week, since I almost never had online connectivity in-game....that's been fixed now, it seems). The only impacts of not being online are that you can't upload your discoveries and you can't see the discoveries of others.
More on point, after playing about 30 hours I don't think that NMS is a great game. It's a bit buggy, there isn't enough variety in what you can do, the planets look pretty samey for the most part, just with different palettes and environments (hot, cold, radioactive, nice), and the worlds are mostly empty. I named one Planet Kansas, which will make sense if you have ever driven across Kansas.
What it does do is the same thing gambling does...or those old experiments where the pigeon pushes on a lever all day to get an occasional treat to drop. It occasionally rewards you with a new ship/storage slot/suit upgrade/etc. This isn't exactly fun, but it gives little rewarding moments and short term goals to work for. If you are a bit OCD, and I admit that I am, this can be a powerful draw. It's not brilliant game design, however.
For such a giant game, it's surprisingly small. The universe has just stretched out the assets in a way that takes you longer to get to them.
That said, I've played a lot and I will play more. Solitaire is also the most played game on my mobile and I will play it more too, so that's an endorsement but not exactly a ringing one. NMS is a rare bird; a game I don't think is great, but I'm compelled to keep playing none the less.
@KingofSaiyanZ Not really, but if you are near a major outpost/station you can call it to you using the, um, "little parking pylon thingy with lights that let's you call your ship." I don't know what it's actually called, but it's where you are automatically parked if you land and there is already a ship on the landing pad.
These can come in VERY handy. Last night, after wandering for a long time collecting a huge amount of gold to fill my suit's 37 slots....my ship had disappeared. The icon showed up on my "compass," but it wasn't there. If I had reloaded my last save, not only would I have lost an hour+ of effort, it would also have cost me ~$600K (units or whatever). I wandered around some more until I found another station with a parking pylon and called my ship there.
After playing for about 20 hours, I've had two crashes. That's not ideal, obviously, but it's on par with The Witcher as far as crashing goes.
A weirder bug was after I looked at trading for a new ship early on, but after comparing it with my Alpha Vector pre-order bonus ship I realized it didn't have a warp drive and backed out before completing the trade (luckily, since apparently that can break the game). I kept my ship and everything was the same...the same # of slots, same gear/loot, etc..., but visually my ship had changed to the one I had been looking at. It stayed that way for probably 8 hours of gameplay. Then, without warning or any reason that I noticed, it suddenly reverted back to the Alpha Vector ship. Weird.
@get2sammyb Just FYI, the Chinese/English version is pretty rare, and the Korean/English version is even harder to find. They are also expensive; I paid $250 for a mint copy of the Hong Kong version earlier this year.
A point that people seem to be ignoring is that PS+ isn't just the monthly freebies on PS3/Vita, it also includes discounts on games. I buy many PS3 games because they are so cheap during sales with the PS+ discount. Quite a few of these games were only bought because of that additional discount and would have otherwise skipped. So, not only is this a benefit for PS+ members that still actively purchase games on the PS3 it helps increase sales, and presumably revenue, for Sony. Incidentally, even with over 200 PS3 games in my library, I still enjoy the new freebies each month. Usually at least one free game is something that provides a couple hours of fun and sometimes there are games I wouldn't have tried otherwise.
I picked up an Xbox 350 for $30 (with Forza 4), so I'm catching up on some exclusives that I missed out on before No Man's Sky is released. This weekend, Alan Wake. I'm not too far in, but so far it's pretty good.
@Ralizah Move support seems like it should have been a no-brainer. I'm especially bummed since I have 2 shiny new Move controllers waiting patiently for PSVR's release, and it would be nice to put them to use.
Thank goodness there are still quirky games like this. Back in the early days of gaming when Nintendo and Sega appeared on the scene, part of the appeal was that they offered something that was different and exotic compared to what had been available to gamers. Gal Gun might not be a masterpiece, but at least it's not another paint by numbers FPS or cover shooter.
Also, I don't really understand the freak out over it. Frankly, this looks pretty tame.
@dryrain Same here. I quite liked the first Watch Dogs and though a lot of the criticism was simply dog piling. I just hope they don't screw up the balance between multiplayer and single player gameplay. Online invasions were just rare enough to be surprising when they happened without hijacking the single player experience. I don't want it to tilt to far towards multiplayer and become like GTA 5 online.
I'm watching this closely because I've preordered Playstation VR. If it looks like VR won't perform well on my "1st gen" PS4, I'm going to cancel my VR preorder. I'm not prepared to spend $800-900 MORE for the "good version" of PS VR when I already have a perfectly fine PS4 that I paid good money for.
@Sanquine Do we have to bring kind of stuff here? I come here to read about video games, not for someone's beliefs about a "leftist self hate agenda."
On topic, poor old THQ had a lot riding on the original title, but it wasn't enough to save them. I remember there was a big marketing push when it came out, and it must have cost THQ a lot of money that they couldn't afford to spend at the time.
@Lucienjohnpeters The lack of local multiplayer is the real deal breaker for me. I didn't think it was terrible...I would have given it a 5 or 6 out of 10...but it certainly wasn't anything special. I was hoping for something like BlazeRush, which can be a lot of fun with 4-player couch co-op. Instead, it's just a generic racer that doesn't add anything to the genre. I'll probably play it for another hour or so, then delete and only think about it in the future because Sony can't bring itself to give us folders to stash deleted games in.
@carlos82 As someone who just preordered a PSVR, I'm going to be pretty unhappy if I find out that I need a new PS4 for an "optimal" VR experience. That would raise the cost to somewhere in the $800 USD range, and I'm unwilling to pay that much since (1) I've already bought a PS4, and (2) No mention was made by Sony of the need for another, better PS4 for an optimal VR experience. That would be enough for me to cancel my order, in fact.
@oats-81 I sort of agree with you. When I know how long a game is, I find myself more or less watching the clock when I reach that amount of playtime. I find that it takes me more time than "how long to beat" type sites usually list, so I'm trying to avoid creating play time expectations. On the other hand, it's useful to have a general idea of a game's length when picking what to play next since I don't like to play massive 100+ hour games back to back.
@Hordak Play Asia is the source I use to import Asian games. They list the languages supported on their website, so make sure to check before you order. The Asian release of DOA Xtreme 3 does have English language support, BTW. Be prepared to wait a week or two for it to arrive if you choose standard shipping (but then it's a surprise when it shows up at your door).
@brendon987 Just install the PlayStation App on your smartphone/tablet and login to your PSN account. With the app you can buy games to your heart's content without being anywhere near your PS3/PS4/Vita.
Back when I played Everquest a lot, I used to like taking the ship to other parts of the world. It made it feel like a large place, and also made it seem more "real" if that makes sense. Ever since then, I've always found walking around to be so much more immersive that I rarely fast travel. You notice so much more of the environments that the developers spent all that time creating for us when you walk around (or run and jump, as the case may be...looking at you Zelda games). Also, as someone already mentioned, when you always trudge through the wilderness, it's a good way to make sure you gain XP in many RPGs.
That said, I'll fast travel in a heartbeat if I get forced to do fetch quests that require a lot of backtracking.
@Pink_Floyd Plus there is an option that lets you play with a real guitar - Rocksmith. I'd much rather plug in my actual guitar and play a music game instead of playing a game with an expensive "clack, clack, clack" plastic controller shaped like a guitar.
I quite liked Watch Dogs, even though it got a little long in the tooth by the time I'd finished it. It might have helped that I've lived in Chicago, which added a level of personal interest. I would love for them to get away from the standard Ubisoft formula - climb/hack/attack a spire/cell tower/base to open up new areas get's a little repetitive after playing a bunch of Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and Watch Dogs.
I mainly hope they either make Aiden more interesting/likable or have a different and more engaging protagonist.
I'm importing this to the US to shock and amuse my friends. Yeah, it's not really that shocking, but I'm a dad in his 40s...my peers are pretty easy to shock. I still have the original Xbox DOA Xtreme Beach V-ball and played it a few weeks ago. It's amazing how good that version looks to this day. This one is obviously going to look much better, but from the trailer I'm not so sure that it's a very good game. Doesn't matter; I'm still getting it.
@carlos82 Aaaaand now I remember why I almost never read comments about a game I'm currently playing - There is always someone who is going to post spoilers. Welp, now I guess I will be looking at [EDIT to remove spoilers] XXXX and XXXX differently knowing that I will have to XXXX XXXXX XXXXX.
Seriously, it's not a brand new game but it's not that old either. It would be great if you could note that you are about to post spoilers before you, you know, post spoilers. For some people (like me) it really takes a lot of the joy out of the game when someone tells you the choices you will have to make.
I enjoyed this game on the PS3, but if you are like me and tend to read/watch a lot of reviews before buying games, make sure to skip the Gamespot review on YouTube. It gives away a significant part of the story in the first sentence of the review, and knowing that spoiler significantly impacted my gameplay experience.
It was an interesting game. I'm glad that I gave it a go, it was a solid title.
The sad thing is, the parties almost certainly agreed to a settlement, and the plaintiff will get some money to just go away. A dismissal with prejudice means that the lawsuit can never be refiled, and a stipulation means that both parties agreed to it. This is standard language for a negotiated settlement. The defense probably just offered less than it would have cost them to take it to trial, even it they had won. Source: I practiced law for 7 years as an insurance defense litigator.
@Liam1894 Clannad....awesome. Possibly my favorite anime ever! Time to do some research.
There's still time to play Fragile Dreams. It might not have the most amazing gameplay (it is decent IMHO), but the story has stuck with me through the years since my first playthrough. I highly, highly recommend it. The developer, Tri-Crescendo, also made Eternal Sonata for the PS3. It's not as touching as Fragile Dreams, but it is another one of those love it/hate it games that I found really enjoyable. "Go back...back within a nebulous dream!"
@NicolaHayden Great, now I have to put a Vita on my "to buy" list.
@Liam1894 Sounds good, and thanks for the info. I've watched and enjoyed Oreimo, and I think I'm ready to channel my inner Kyosuke and dive in. I'll pick up Hakuoki today...you convinced me!
@Liam1894 I'm not too hung up on the man/woman thing in games...Samus and Laura Croft cured me of that long ago. However, as a guy it does seem like it would be easier to get into if there were female dates. Do you know of any Japanese dating sims featuring male protagonists that were localized? Either way, I just saw a collectors edition of Hakuoki on sale for $24 at a local shot, I think I'll pick it up and give it a go.
Never Alone isn't perfect, but it is a very nice two player game if you happen to be an old enough gamer to have kids. I played it with my 12 year old daughter, and it was a fun experience for us both. It's definitely on the easy side, but I don't need every game I play to be a teeth grinding exercise in concentration and perseverance.
@KAPADO Why would you talk about the final scene in a game that was just released?!? Now I know something of what to expect when I finish my play through. Maybe that's not a major spoiler, but it's still a spoiler.
@B3ND3R How does Super Stardust compare to Geometry Wars 3? I'll pick up at least one of the two PS4 versions. I dig twin stick shooters, and while I like Resogun just fine, honestly, my favorite is still Geometry Wars: Galaxies on the Wii with a classic controller.
I got this game yesterday. It's quite a lot of fun, and is one of those "I'll give it one more go before I stop" games. It's also simple enough to play that it is easy for someone to pick it up and be competitive pretty quickly. It can be a challenge to see the track in front of you when you get a good lead, but it's not a game breaker. My only real complaint is that the online multiplayer is either not up or it is absolutely deserted.
I still play my PS3 more than my PS4; there are just too many great PS3 games that I missed that can be picked up now for a few dollars to justify putting it out to pasture. For example, I just picked up Kingdom of Amalur for $3 on PSN. Three dollars....that is literally pennies per hour of gameplay! Wolfenstein has been getting the PS4 more playing time, though, and the PS3 might get a few weeks off soon now that Dragon Age: Inquisition is here.

Re: Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Packs Up Its Swimsuit Until 24th March
@Hordak Play Asia is the source I use to import Asian games. They list the languages supported on their website, so make sure to check before you order. The Asian release of DOA Xtreme 3 does have English language support, BTW. Be prepared to wait a week or two for it to arrive if you choose standard shipping (but then it's a surprise when it shows up at your door).
Re: Critics' Picks Go Cheap in NA PlayStation Store Sale
@brendon987 Just install the PlayStation App on your smartphone/tablet and login to your PSN account. With the app you can buy games to your heart's content without being anywhere near your PS3/PS4/Vita.
Re: Talking Point: Do You Fast Travel in Open World Games?
Re: Uh Oh, Both Rock Band and Guitar Hero Haven't Sold Well
@Pink_Floyd Plus there is an option that lets you play with a real guitar - Rocksmith. I'd much rather plug in my actual guitar and play a music game instead of playing a game with an expensive "clack, clack, clack" plastic controller shaped like a guitar.
Re: Watch Dogs 2 Will Don Its Iconic Cap by April 2017 on PS4
I quite liked Watch Dogs, even though it got a little long in the tooth by the time I'd finished it. It might have helped that I've lived in Chicago, which added a level of personal interest. I would love for them to get away from the standard Ubisoft formula - climb/hack/attack a spire/cell tower/base to open up new areas get's a little repetitive after playing a bunch of Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and Watch Dogs.
I mainly hope they either make Aiden more interesting/likable or have a different and more engaging protagonist.
Re: Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Is Creepy But Pretty Impressive
I'm importing this to the US to shock and amuse my friends. Yeah, it's not really that shocking, but I'm a dad in his 40s...my peers are pretty easy to shock. I still have the original Xbox DOA Xtreme Beach V-ball and played it a few weeks ago. It's amazing how good that version looks to this day. This one is obviously going to look much better, but from the trailer I'm not so sure that it's a very good game. Doesn't matter; I'm still getting it.
Re: Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, and Fallout 4 All Nominated for Game Awards 2015 Game of the Year
@carlos82 It's cool. Hey, it's a big game, I'm sure there are lots and lots of surprises to look forward to still.
Now I need to go back and edit my post to remove spoilers, else I look like the villain.
Re: Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, and Fallout 4 All Nominated for Game Awards 2015 Game of the Year
@carlos82 Aaaaand now I remember why I almost never read comments about a game I'm currently playing - There is always someone who is going to post spoilers.
Re: Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons May Be Coming to PS4
I enjoyed this game on the PS3, but if you are like me and tend to read/watch a lot of reviews before buying games, make sure to skip the Gamespot review on YouTube. It gives away a significant part of the story in the first sentence of the review, and knowing that spoiler significantly impacted my gameplay experience.
It was an interesting game. I'm glad that I gave it a go, it was a solid title.
Re: Killzone: Shadow Fall's Ridiculous Resolution Court Case Has Been Dismissed
The sad thing is, the parties almost certainly agreed to a settlement, and the plaintiff will get some money to just go away. A dismissal with prejudice means that the lawsuit can never be refiled, and a stipulation means that both parties agreed to it. This is standard language for a negotiated settlement. The defense probably just offered less than it would have cost them to take it to trial, even it they had won. Source: I practiced law for 7 years as an insurance defense litigator.
Re: So, You May Want to Clear Up Your PS4 Hard Drive Before Downloading The Elder Scrolls Online Beta
@dellyrascal I hear you. I'm thinking I made a mistake by only upgrading to a 1TB HDD.
Re: Fans' Dreams Come True as Amnesia: Memories Hits the Vita This Summer
Re: Fans' Dreams Come True as Amnesia: Memories Hits the Vita This Summer
@Liam1894 Sounds good, and thanks for the info. I've watched and enjoyed Oreimo, and I think I'm ready to channel my inner Kyosuke and dive in. I'll pick up Hakuoki today...you convinced me!
Re: Fans' Dreams Come True as Amnesia: Memories Hits the Vita This Summer
@Liam1894 I'm not too hung up on the man/woman thing in games...Samus and Laura Croft cured me of that long ago. However, as a guy it does seem like it would be easier to get into if there were female dates. Do you know of any Japanese dating sims featuring male protagonists that were localized? Either way, I just saw a collectors edition of Hakuoki on sale for $24 at a local shot, I think I'll pick it up and give it a go.
Re: April's PlayStation Plus Freebies Include Tower of Guns, Never Alone on PS4
Never Alone isn't perfect, but it is a very nice two player game if you happen to be an old enough gamer to have kids. I played it with my 12 year old daughter, and it was a fun experience for us both. It's definitely on the easy side, but I don't need every game I play to be a teeth grinding exercise in concentration and perseverance.
Re: Review: Game of Thrones: Episode 3 - The Sword in the Darkness (PlayStation 4)
@KAPADO Why would you talk about the final scene in a game that was just released?!? Now I know something of what to expect when I finish my play through. Maybe that's not a major spoiler, but it's still a spoiler.
Re: Super Stardust Ultra Flies One More Time Next Week on PS4
@B3ND3R How does Super Stardust compare to Geometry Wars 3? I'll pick up at least one of the two PS4 versions. I dig twin stick shooters, and while I like Resogun just fine, honestly, my favorite is still Geometry Wars: Galaxies on the Wii with a classic controller.
Re: Review: BlazeRush (PlayStation Network)
I got this game yesterday. It's quite a lot of fun, and is one of those "I'll give it one more go before I stop" games. It's also simple enough to play that it is easy for someone to pick it up and be competitive pretty quickly. It can be a challenge to see the track in front of you when you get a good lead, but it's not a game breaker. My only real complaint is that the online multiplayer is either not up or it is absolutely deserted.
Re: Wait, There's a New PlayStation 3 Firmware Update?
I still play my PS3 more than my PS4; there are just too many great PS3 games that I missed that can be picked up now for a few dollars to justify putting it out to pasture. For example, I just picked up Kingdom of Amalur for $3 on PSN. Three dollars....that is literally pennies per hour of gameplay! Wolfenstein has been getting the PS4 more playing time, though, and the PS3 might get a few weeks off soon now that Dragon Age: Inquisition is here.
