I typically play these types of games on easy, I don’t recall finishing a game and thinking “man, I wish I would have died more and had to replay more sections”. That said, I voted for no easy mode. Dying is part of the game mechanics in Elden Ring. Honestly you’re not massively punished like some of the earlier games. There is the odd time you die in a bad spot and lose some souls, but the difficulty is what gives you that feeling of dread when you’re exploring with 20k souls. If there weren’t a million fascinating places to explore while you’re grinding souls for leveling and weapons, maybe I’d feel differently. But they gave you everything you could want so you’re not sitting in some boring area killing the same thing over and over. If a boss is too tough, go explore one of the best and most dense open worlds ever created.
Guides still have a place in my opinion. It’s nice when you’re looking to accomplish absolutely everything in a game, you can have it sitting right by you open to a page for reference. Knowing what materials are needed to craft a certain item for example. I don’t use the walkthroughs but the tables and maps can be highly useful. I also really enjoy looking through the walkthroughs in the guides for games I’ve completed, gives you a great sense of nostalgia. That’s the best thing about them for me. Plus they are indeed collectable, some of them are worth hundreds. I will say $50 for a non collectors edition guide is ridiculous, and having it come out over a month after the game is also bad form. I won’t be adding this one to the collection.
PS is selling this sale short. There are a ton of great games on sale. Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 for $25 combined, Torment for $9, The Outer Worlds for $20, Dark Souls 3 for $15, all the Warhammer games are massively discounted, Vampyr for $10, Shenmue 3 for $8…if you’re into RPGs this is an amazing sale.
I’ve been playing this on a ps5, and it’s fantastic. It runs better than a lot of other games at this point. Madden 22 glitches constantly, it’s a total mess compared to where CP2077 is. This is a truly amazing game and it’s a real shame they rushed it out in such a broken state at launch. But I assure you, at least on PS5, it runs great. I think I’ve had to reload a save because of a map glitch once and I’ve seen some floating weapons a couple times. Other than that I have nothing bad to say.
You guys messed up and forgot Bloodstained. Clearly it couldn’t have been left off on purpose, that would be insanity. No worries, I forgive you and await the correction.
“Technical depth” is not a phrase I’d use to describe any Tales combat. I beat Berseria on normal difficulty and combat was overwhelmingly a mindless button mash. No different than your standard rpg where you hit attack a few times and move on though.
@Jayofmaya interesting, I didn’t have that experience. The ranged was definitely OP, I spent my time upgrading my gun so I didn’t really get into melee except to mess around. Ranged you can smoke everything and enemies have a couple cookie cutter moves and that’s it, no cover or anything, so it was sleepwalkingly easy.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 40-50 hours with this game. My advice is stick to the side quests and explore the amazing world. The true fun for me was finding all the rare components to use in the excellent crafting system. The main quests and overall story are poor, and yes the combat is just too easy; mostly because the enemy AI is horrific. But I feel like I definitely got my money out of it and I’d preorder a sequel for sure.
@sikthvash I did the same but I got so tired of waiting I finally popped it into my PS5. I will say, it’s an amazing game. I’m about 40 hours in and it’s crashed 4-5 times. Picking stuff up can be a little annoying, and I had a screen glitch where I have to reload a save. Other than those it’s been quite stable. It’s a great looking game on ps5 and the story and side missions are really incredible. CDPR really doesn’t really deserve your time and money with the way they botched this, but I doubt you’ll regret giving it a try.
No question 4K looks better than 1080p, but 1080p can still look damn good and if it’s rock solid 60fps than I’m good. I’ll still get the way faster load times on my ps5.
It’s clearly a fantastic game, but for people like myself that aren’t awesome at video games, it’s tilted too much to the hard side. I’m at 30 deaths and haven’t beaten the first boss yet. Add difficulty levels or an optional checkpoint system or something. I get the way the game is provides the purest storyline and is “the way it’s meant to be played”. But in its current state people like me will never get to experience all the game has to offer. Even after I finally got to the boss, death means another hour grinding for proficiency and max health before I can try him again. Not sure what the answer is, just saying in its current state there’s zero chance I’ll complete the game.
@Northern_munkey yes, but if you look at this same time in the PS4 cycle, we were getting Bound by Flame and Octodad. With Spider-Man, Returnal , Resident Evil and Demons Souls, the PS5 already has several massive exclusives, not to mention Ratchet and Clank right around the corner. And you can play all your PS4 games, many of which have graphical improvements and all of which have way faster load times. Taken as a whole, the PS5 launch has been absolutely amazing.
Never really got these games. I played the first one for a few hours on PC, then tried 2 but got bored after about 10 hours. Go to world, do some bland cover based shooting stuff, get some story, rinse repeat. Just not my thing. I can’t deny their popularity though.
@Deadlyblack no question this is true. I was lucky enough to get a PS5 at launch and I’ve played just as many PS4 games as PS5, if not more. The fact that it at least shortens load times on virtually every PS4 game is an amazing feature. I have The Last of Us 2 loading from a flash drive and it still loads way quicker than on a PS4.
75% of games give me motion sickness after a few minutes (Skyrim, Farpoint, B&T, Ace Combat to name a few), but the games I could play like Beat Saber, Creed, Hot Shots and Astro Bot were amazing experiences. Some of the best party gaming I’ve ever been a part of.
@Rob_230 totally agree, what a ridiculous thing that made combat even longer. I know there was some banter while running around, but honesty why are your companions even shown outside of battle and cutscenes? Nothing better than watching one of them running in place on a bike rack for 10 seconds 6 blocks away from the battle.
@ShogunRok my thoughts exactly, they say nothing about any upgrades and quite frankly the video makes it look like there aren’t many. I could stick my ps2 copy into my pc and have it look better emulated. $30 is ridiculous.
@KingPev you’re right, as of a few days ago, months after launch, there’s an above average chance the game is playable enough to enjoy. My copy of Skyrim is still lodged in my launch PS3 after the 900th game breaking glitch finally bricked it, so you’ll have to forgive me if I don’t have the stomach to slog through any more bug riddled half baked pc ports. I’m quite confident I’ll love the game when I actually play it, I’m just massively disappointed that CDPR would put out an unplayable mess then take months to fix it. And yes, I haven’t played a single minute of it; I’m just going off the universal criticism and hundreds of YouTube videos. I’d rather not risk something happening to my ps5, not like I can go down to the corner store and grab a new one. A triple A full priced game being released in such a state that Sony doesn’t feel comfortable offering it for sale on their store is totally unprecedented so I feel that I’m justified in waiting. Just one mans opinion.
@LordSteev exactly, it’s so disappointing it’s not even worth opening. It’s the ultimate level of disappointment. I trust that if it’s so broken Sony can’t even sell it on their store, with some of the absolute trash that’s readily available on there, it’s not worth my time.
Imagine how different this would have been if CDPR had launched cyberpunk as a native PS5 game instead of trying to shoehorn it onto a console that simply can’t run it. My copy is still in shrinkwrap waiting for the PS5 update that I have little to no faith will be out this year. One of the most disappointing games of my life. Hopefully someday I’ll get to enjoy it.
Like Automata, I can assure you the extra endings in Replicant are far better than the first one. Unlike Automata, the fetch quests and literal gardening in Replicant were ridiculously boring. I loved this game on PS3 but I never platinumed it due to something related to an eagle egg. It’s like 15-20 hours of dice rolling horrible drop rates for one stupid item. That said, if you like Automata I don’t see how you wouldn’t really enjoy Replicant.
Most JRPGs are linear in nature. FFVII, which was universally praised, is more linear than FFXIII, which has a huge open area in the second half of the game. The Trails of Cold Steel games have “open world” areas, but they’re just large rooms connected by hallways, much like FFXII. I don’t need every game to be the Witcher 3. Linearity allows for a more crafted storyline
The original game is an absolute classic, one of my top 5 PS3 games. And the soundtrack has to be the best ever on PS3. Good to great action rpg elements combined with an absolutely insane but easy to follow storyline. As with all Yoko games it must be “beaten” multiple times to get all of the best parts of the story. But the subsequent play throughs are only about half the game and they’re completely different story wise and unlock new weapons locations and items so they’re well worth it. I loved Automata but I expect Replicant to be better.
I have a set. They do sound really good with certain games, Days Gone and Hitman 3 for example. Otherwise the sound is fine, and they really balance chat and game sound well; you can adjust it to your liking. There are a couple big downsides though. I wish they would last longer, and the USB dongle is totally stupid. There are only 3 USB ports on the ps5 and this takes up one. Why no Bluetooth? It’s ridiculous. I have a set of Skullcandy Crushers. Not only do they sound way better, they last literally 10-15 times longer, and they use Bluetooth.
So I guess I would agree with the review, for a $100 set of gaming specific headphones, these are worth it.
I thought Inquisition, and DA2 for that matter, were absolutely horrid when set against the absolute classic that was the original Dragon Age. Go back to the original game style please and I’ll be in.
