Re: Austrian Retailer Reckons Project Morpheus Will Cost €399

GameAce

I'm all in on Morpheus. I'll even pay this exorbitant price for it despite being a cheapskate as long as the initial reviews are positive. But it's really going to have to get off the ground quickly as a compelling device at this price point. Sony doesn't inspire confidence with their history of abandoning products like they basically have the Vita and most recently the Playstation TV. Not many people are going to shell out that kind of cash if they think it's going to be a bookshelf warmer with no software if it's not an instant success and thus abandoned by Sony.

Re: Review: Apotheon (PlayStation 4)

GameAce

I'm enjoying Rogue Legacy a alot more than Apotheon this month. I like to sit back on my couch or recline in a comfy chair when I'm playing PS4 and the characters/menus in Apotheon are just too small compared to the screen to do that with. I find myself hunched over trying to keep track of everything.

Re: Feature: What Are February 2015's Free PlayStation Plus Games?

GameAce

Apotheon could be neat, but I'm really looking forward to Transistor and Rogue Legacy; the latter I nearly bought half a dozen times before saying to myself "It'll be free on PS+ in the next six months and I have too many games to play already." Those games can now fall off a bridge, because Rogue Legacy is here and it's my kind of game!

Re: Round Up: Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor PS4 Reviews Rule the Ring

GameAce

I've been looking forward to SoM since it was first announced, no, since there were first rumors of an open world LotR game. I'm a big fan of open world games (when they're done right) and LotR. I also love a lot of the mechanics in the Rocksteady Batman games and some of the mechanics in the Assassin's Creed games.

That said, I don't read most of the publications you spotlighted in the article anymore. Their first concern isn't games. It's a whole bunch of other stuff.

Anyway, I'm just biding my time until my SoM pre-order shows up. Get here soon.

Re: Sony Reckons Project Morpheus Is Seriously Game Changing Technology

GameAce

I might be interested in the article, but I don't read anything Polygon puts out anymore.

To the broader point, yes, I'm hugely excited! I hope PS chooses quality over quantity when releasing software for Morpheus. The last thing the fragile future of VR needs is a bunch of half-baked duds.

VR, and I'm one of its biggest supporters (You know, the kind that sits at home and writes on message boards how much he's looking forward to VR without contributing meaningful to its success or creation in any way), has a lot to prove before one can say it's like going from silent film to talkies. Talkies were a new, superior way of telling stories on screen. Can VR be a new, superior way of gaming? The commitment to R&D, to promotion, and to making really good games, has to be there first. This can't be another half-assed Sony project they forget about in a year if it's going to succeed.

Re: You Won't Have to Wait Too Much Longer for Sony's VR Headset Project Morpheus

GameAce

I'm onboard because I'm onboard with virtual reality in gaming in general. That's the single most important prospect of the future of gaming in my eyes. Project Morpheus is, and hopefully will be, a step in the direction I want to head in. We're probably not going to get a perfect, polished virtual reality experience for a while yet. With any luck, Oculus and Morpheus will provide enough unique experiences to keep the trend going. Virtual reality is only going to get better and more immersive with improved technology.

Re: Review: Velocity 2X (PlayStation 4)

GameAce

Countdown until I can personally get my hands on this game. I loved Velocity Ultra. It was pretty much the perfect Vita game on the go. From all or most accounts, Velocity 2X is improved and expanded. I'm glad it's free because I was surely going to shell out money for it!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 36

GameAce

I'm trying my hand at Metrico on the Vita. I like it better than Road Not Taken so far, which got slightly better reviews. Each puzzle in Metrico is standalone and I prefer that. I've yet to finish Strider, so that's a possibility, but I kind of screwed myself in that game by never getting any health bar powerups.

Re: Talking Point: Is Indie Becoming a Defunct, Dirty Word?

GameAce

I think indie as a term hasn't worn out its welcome. I still see it in a positive light. It's where the creative juices in the industry are flowing. A franchise like Call of Duty has to sell millions of copies in each iteration to be a success. There's no room for experimentation, for trying something new there. The new ideas in gaming, almost by design, have to come from studios that work within a different business model than AAA stuidos.

Also, while there are few silent film era enthusiasts left (try the Golden Age for the best, most iconic films of all-time), plenty of people would prefer a student film on cafeteria food to Michael Bay fare.

Re: Feature: What Are September 2014's Free PlayStation Plus Games?

GameAce

Vita is looking forward to a pretty good month and no one should be writing off Velocity 2X (everyone who has played it says this game is awesome and the first one is... awesome). I wouldn't call this month a standout, especially after last month's content heavy offerings (you can play around in Dragon's Crown for dozens of hours alone). I'm still interested in two or three games and I don't even own a PS3.

Re: Amazon Coughs Up $970 Million for Streaming Site Twitch

GameAce

Another site bites the dust. When will Facebook, Google and Amazon's ruthless acquisition of all cyber space come to an end? I don't think it's healthy for the future of the internet.

And why doesn't eBay get in on this? I'd love to see an ad for a half-eaten sandwich in Wisconsin selling for $1.06 next to my streams.

Re: Sony: PS Move Was Ahead of Its Time, But There's No Appetite for Motion Right Now

GameAce

I've been on the Project Morpheus bandwagon since day one. I don't own any of the Move stuff. I have a PS4 camera (wish I'd waited and bought it cheaper since the thing sits there gathering dust without any convincing applications). Is there a money quote from Yoshida saying you will need THE Move, or just something like the Move that they may release at the time Morpheus is released? I hope Project Morpheus is a 2015 thing and not a 2016 thing. But most importantly, I hope it works and works well.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 34

GameAce

@XFsWorld I pretty much missed out on these during that console cycle since I had an original Xbox. I only bought a PS2 close to the end of the generation to play the best of the best and played through Ratchet and Clank instead of Sly Cooper. I'm already thirteen hours into the second game and it's been a ton of fun with lots of memorable moments. Great price for what appears to be three spectacular games.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 34

GameAce

I'm working my way through the Sly Cooper series (more than half through the second game now) on the Vita. That's provided quite a bit of fun. I'm surprised how long the second game is.

I'm still itching to sample the two newly released games that they put up on PS+ and I want to finish up Strider on PS4 at some point.

Re: Soapbox: Here's Why I Will Be Playing Journey on PS4

GameAce

I can go back to films I adore over and over again, but I can't do the same thing with games. Not unless it's been ten years or something. A game with a definite endpoint is finished for me the moment I reach that and then struggle through the boring credits as a strange sort of victory lap. I can certainly understand gamers who do want to replay and experience again games they loved. That should be done not at 1080p 60 FPS on the PS Now. It would be one thing if PS1 and PS2 classics were being remastered for the PS4. Why devote fresh resources to a game that came out and already looked great just last gen?

Re: Gamescom 2014: PlayStation Vita Largely Ignored During Sony's Show

GameAce

Why can't the Vita have some sort of nominal success like the Wii U will be set up for? Vita has a better argument for being relevant in my opinion. I guess the difference is PS totally jumped ship on the Vita in favor of the PS4 whereas Nintendo stuck with the WIi U when they could have just cut and run on the strength of 3DS sales. Nintendo wasn't/isn't willing to cede the home console market. It looks like Sony is willing to do that with the handheld market.

Despite what Gravity Rush and Uncharted: Golden Abyss may have said to Vita owners, Sony clearly has to be thinking they overpromised with the PS3 in the palm of your hand thing. Sure, the Vita has a strong, often overlooked game library, which should only get stronger, but almost exclusively from indies here on out it seems. I love plenty of indies. I don't love the PlayStation in PlayStation Vita giving up on their own product when I already own it. What now?

Re: There May Still Be Hope for the PlayStation 4 in Japan Yet

GameAce

I certainly wouldn't write the PS4 off in Japan. Why does Vita do so well there? Because Vita's game library has the games gamers in Japan want to play. PS4 will release some of those as time goes on and then the PS4 will start to sell. Let Wii U have the spotlight there a little while.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 33

GameAce

I'm playing the Sly Cooper Collection on Vita. I snagged it new for $4 (after a Dell.com $25 Gift Certificate and 10% Discover cashback). I had an Xbox during this cycle and only owned a PS2 for a short period of time. I have played parts of the game, but I'd call this my first formal introduction. It's one I've wanted to play for a while so I'm glad the port was successful. I'm on the last level of the first game and it's a blast so far. I know many of the mechanics were tweaked in the later two games and I'm looking forward to that as well.

On the PS4 front, I've yet to finish Strider because while I liked Strider, I really liked Muramasa Rebirth and got caught up with that when they were both free on PS+. I'm looking forward to trying the two new release games that are available for PS+ this month. The others I've played (everyone should play Dragon's Crown. Great game. I wish I could wholeheartedly endorse Fez for the amazing game experience it was, but Phil Fish.)

Re: Feature: 10 PS4, PS3, and Vita Reveals That We Reckon Will Happen at Gamescom 2014

GameAce

Indie studios are releasing the new, imaginative games I want to play. They can be totally new and different and still remind me of the games I played as a kid, back when pretty much all games felt new and different. I think one can have the biggest experience playing a smaller game from a smaller studio. Gamers are going to lose out on a lot of those experiences if they keep pitting indie against AAA. Indies aren't going away. Look how many copies Shovel Knight has sold. It's a business model which works.

Vita needs a larger presence in the presentation than it had at E3. People have to know about it to buy it. I'm playing the Sly Cooper Collection on Vita right now. A remastering that works and makes sense. It's great. It's probably sold horribly, considering no one knew/knows about it.

Re: Sony: We Want to Make PS4 Players Feel Special

GameAce

I'm going to go against the grain and say my Vita feels more special than my PS4 right now. Sure, virtually everyone at Sony is ignoring Vita like the plague, but games, really great games are still being released. It also has a great game catalogue of titles already released. Not that I'm down on my PS4, it'll have more company when Destiny and Middle-Earth get released.

Re: Store Update: 6th August 2014 (Europe)

GameAce

I often check Google News for new articles on PlayStation. The images beside the articles are usually those of the PlayStation interface, a character, a graph, or maybe a picture of the console(s). But next to PushSquare's articles, there's a blurry, blown up picture of a surfer dude with blond locks and silly sunglasses. You must bleed PlayStation.

Re: Out This Week: Road Not Taken, The Swapper, Metrico

GameAce

Everyone needs to try The Swapper. This is a game that deserves to be on the list of discussion for GotY in my opinion. I worry people are only going to retroactively discover how good this game is once its free for PS+ sometime in 2015. That's still better than never discovering it. I originally played it on Windows and bought it again for PS4. I'm glad indies are filling up the usually barren summer months. Shovel Knight, Rogue Legacy, and The Swapper to name a few, make this a strong few months for gaming while we all wait on Destiny.

Re: BioShock's Swimming to a Smartphone Near You, But Not the PlayStation Vita

GameAce

Well, iOS gaming sucks. It just does. Every aspect of a game ends up inferior. But when you choose iOS, you don't have to worry about the install base. Everyone already owns an Apple device for its other capabilities. The games are just pudding. My frustration is just that real games play best on dedicated gaming devices. I think BioShock Vita could have been great, but Vita's catalogue of games is strong enough without it. I still play my Vita more than my PS4 because of the disparity in games, not that that won't change with Destiny and Middle-Earth on the horizon.

Re: You'll Need Friends to Tackle PS4 Shooter Destiny's Three Hour Missions

GameAce

One thing about MMOs, the game devs are much more dependent on player feedback. A game like Infamous you'll play for a couple weeks and then move onto another game. That kind of gaming mentality is death for an MMO. They want to get their hooks into you and keep them there for years if they can. Especially if they're a subscription service, which Destiny isn't, but you better believe they want to sell you DLC with the promise of more worlds and higher levels. So, my point is, conceivably this could change if enough players voice their displeasure.

It seems like a dumb decision to me. Sure, in some other MMOs, you'd never play with random people, because you have a lot more to lose if you die, but for a game like Destiny, it doesn't make much sense. It's also easier to make friends in an MMO on PC with a keyboard.

Re: Sony Has Lots of Good Stuff Planned for GamesCom Next Week

GameAce

I'd like to see Vita get some more attention at GamesCom than it did at E3. Sony has to prove they see Vita as more than just a PS4 accessory for it to thrive as a standalone handheld device.

How about an introduction to Guerrilla Games' top secret new IP? Some more footage of the The Order would be nice. Please remind us PS4 has some exclusives coming down the pike.

Re: Push Rewind: The Last of Us Remastered, PS Plus Freebies, and Destiny Concerns

GameAce

I think some of your concerns for Destiny are valid. Like, upgrading your gear should feel more rewarding and satisfying. Other gripes, I think, don't stand up. Like the fact that "bosses" take too long and are bullet sponges. Welcome to the world of MMOs. That's sort of their M.O. — get it? I played an MMORPG off and on for ten years. Besides the insufferable grinding, everything worth killing took lots of time, and/or lots of time to get to, and lots of high levels and abilities plus gear to kill. Just look at how long dungeons in WOW take to clear with a full team for one example. So, in my opinion, hate the genre, not the game.

But in other news, GamesCom is going to be huge this year. I can't wait for all the reveals.

Re: No Man's Sky Will Fly to Other Formats After PS4

GameAce

This really was THE PS4 game from E3. A lot of eyes are going to be fixed on this one. Can it deliver on expectations so high? Indie studios have surprised me before. I'm ready to get behind the wheel of this game. And I won't be playing it on PC.
