Re: Xbox Will 'Try to Do More' Console Exclusives if the Health of Its Business Improves

EvilBear

@11001100110zero Oh I completely hear you on the counter point and your consideration of those facts is totally valid. I also understand that it can all be pretty subjective.
It’s hard to actually call those numbers a failure unless you’re comparing them to the competition. They want to be bigger than PlayStation, why wouldn’t they? PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5 have almost the same third party games minus exclusives that are mostly just timed exclusives these days. Their always online Xbox One fumble caused an entire console generation at a critical time for consumers to be investing purchases in a blossoming digital ecosystem to go PS4. PS5’s PS4 backwards compatibility is a huge deal. It basically has that same system people spent ridiculous amounts of money on built into it.

Xbox has done a respectable job from sales throughout the years but they helped set a standard that they let get away from them and is now divided up between their two biggest hardware/ecosystem competitors. Their competitors that they now find themselves publishing for. They’ve failed to meet their own metrics. They helped shape the industry as it is today and don’t appear to like the standards that they helped set. I adored my Xbox and Xbox 360. So many good memories. But…

  • Flip flopping on exclusives
  • Taking PlayStation consumers for granted by saying “Let us introduce you to this franchise (Gears)” then “Oh, the people who bought our system are angry that you don’t have to do the same, so no highly-anticipated prequel story for you.” Everything on the earth is stupid expensive right now and Microsoft just told PlayStation owners “Just kidding, go buy yet another expensive piece of hardware to enjoy this series that we catfished you into.”
  • Cementing themselves as one of the biggest publishers then proceeding to 💩can so many developers and employees across the entire Xbox family of developers after putting them through a tremendously anxiety-inducing post-pandemic corporate buyout that involved the FTC’s scrutiny and scorn. Xbox has failed as a hardware manufacturer because they continue to fall short of having a concrete business model that fans can depend on.

Re: God of War Laufey Voted Best PS5 Game at State of Play

EvilBear

@DarianStarfrog Respectfully, I don’t feel that this is totally fair. God of War games have mostly done a good job maintaining the core series identity. Not perfect, but I think it is too early to write this game off so arbitrarily.

Also, the whole “ew woke” thing, that’s so tired and devoid of any meaning or seriousness after two decades of “keep politics out of my games”. Media can speak for itself without the need of an empty political trigger phrase.

Re: With PC Ports Scrapped, Sony Brings Back 'Only on PS5' Disclaimer

EvilBear

I think Sony can be strategic with their IP appearing elsewhere. MLB, makes sense though I know MLB is why that happened. Stuff like the Namco-developed Hot Shots Golf, the Horizon Lego game being on Switch, Helldivers being everywhere, I understand all of that.

Nintendo, even through their worst (Wii U) survived without sending their IP to the land of publishing on other platforms. Sony leaving PC behind makes sense. Plus, with all the nonsense Microsoft is pulling with their identity crisis that they’ve made the whole industry’s problem, I can’t say I blame Sony.

Re: USA Bank Wants You to Pay $80 for GTA 6 So Other Devs Can Charge More Too

“People aren’t angry enough at rising costs literally everywhere else in their lives, why don’t we exploit these troubled times for additional profit as well?”

This infuriating phenomenon is obviously not exclusive to video games. The powder keg of rage that these folks continue to pour gasoline over is flirting with absolute disaster.

Re: Astro Bot Has Added Its Most Wanted Cameo in Huge PS5 Update

EvilBear

I don’t really see Cloud as exclusively a PlayStation icon these days as he has been ever-present on Nintendo platforms for a while now, even as a guest in Smash Brothers. That being said, his history with the PlayStation brand is indisputably important and should have been in AstroBot at launch but.. ya know, SE and all.

Re: PS5 Fans Divided Over Helldivers 2 on Xbox Pivot

EvilBear

I 100% appreciate PlayStation fans wanting Sony to take a measured, cautious approach to ports. After seeing Microsoft’s strategy cause people to rethink the value of Xbox hardware and the endless rounds of layoffs the Xbox brand is experiencing, their hesitancy to see Sony port and publish games on Xbox is valid. With that, the SONY IS DOOMED quotes in this article are reactionary and excessive. It’s one game and it not even one of their cinematic single player masterpieces that sell PlayStations.

Re: It's Over! FTC Drops Its Case Against Microsoft's Activision Buyout

EvilBear

Looking at floundering Xbox console sales but flourishing game sales, Microsoft is making good on their promise to support PlayStation, Nintendo, and competing streaming services as well as continued PC support. Xbox consoles could go away tomorrow and Microsoft would still be one of the biggest names in the game. Now all eyes should be on seeing if Microsoft is going to be able to make GamePass make sense for the industry and profitability. I have my doubts, but meanwhile I do not mind being able to use the service.

Re: Just Like the Game, The Last of Us 2's TV Adaptation Is Getting Review Bombed

EvilBear

The thing about the extreme level of negativity is that not a single person here at home, at work, or in any of the friend groups on and offline have foamed at the mouth about this series. I do find it difficult to believe that most of the negative reviews are for legitimate reasons like maybe not liking a particular actor’s portrayal of a character. I have disliked shows and games that most people loved but it was never for something as infantile and pathetic as culture war reasons or someone’s appearance.

Re: Unsurprisingly, Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Future May Not Be PS5 Exclusive

EvilBear

@joeyflannel I can understand that to an extent. I did relate Final Fantasy to PlayStation for a long time until the GBA came out (makes me feel old).

My first Resident Evil game was RE2 on N64, then Zero and RE 1 remake on GameCube, then 4 exclusive to GC, then the ports of 2 & 3 on GC. RE has strong Nintendo roots for me.

Crash Bandicoot does still resonate “PlayStation” for me, but feels strange that he’s technically a Xbox mascot now.

Re: A PS5 Exclusive DOOM: The Dark Ages Trailer Isn't Sitting Well with Xbox Fans

EvilBear

I’m a very platform agnostic guy with a big place in my heart for Nintendo games but let’s be real, this game is going to sell best on PlayStation and PC. Hell, it might sell better on an eventual Switch 2 port than Xbox. I know hardcore Xbox fans are upset at this direction, but Microsoft’s games do really well on PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo. I would rather have these games readily available everywhere than watch them die marooned on the Xbox island. Minecraft on Switch and Indiana Jones on PlayStation are good examples.

Re: Kids Aren't Dreaming of Owning a PS6, Says Netflix Games Boss

EvilBear

Nintendo and Sony are going to clean house in the next generation just like they are now but phones and tablets are going to play a big role going forward. This is one reason that Nintendo’s hybrid model is working so well. It would be cool to see Sony go further in adopting the Switch 2 as their handheld of choice. I would love to see those two play nice with this challenging new landscape that they are both respectively doing well to navigate in their own ways. I don’t want either Nintendo or PlayStation to end up like Xbox.

Re: PS2, the Most Popular Console Ever, Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary

EvilBear

I had to experience PS2 retroactively even though I was born before the SNES was released. My parents purchased me a PS2 in 2000 and three months later, the disc drive died. Sony refused to repair it for free. Not sure why, I was young. To this day, my parents refuse to purchase anything with the name “Sony” on it. We quickly became a GameCube + Xbox household. The cool thing is I’ve been able to have experiences for the first time over the last 20 years of my life and some of my friends have coveted that first exposure to so many classics. These days, I’m very much a platform-agnostic gamer with a proclivity towards Nintendo games but the PS2 had a stellar library.
