It’s been two weeks since Sony announced its intent to stop manufacturing physical discs, a story which has undeniably dominated the games industry – even in the wake of mass layoffs at Xbox.
And the storm is beginning to reach its partners, none of which can promote their games without seeing a wave of responses from irate fans.
Take the latest Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls trailer, for example, showing off the Unbreakable X-Men story in the upcoming fighting game.
Originally posted on the game’s own X (or Twitter) account, Sony amplified it by retweeting it, only for its replies to get utterly decimated by players demanding an about-face on physical media.
What about the new The Alters expansion, again reposted by PlayStation’s official account? Practically every single response is about Sony’s disc decision, despite dev 11-Bit having nothing to do with it.

Meanwhile, many posts are attracting Community Notes, some with false information. And it’s much the same story on YouTube, where every trailer – regardless of its content – is getting inundated with comments about physical discs.
It’s worth noting that the responses are dropping in numbers; the first post after PlayStation’s hiatus attracted about 65k replies, and now we’re down to roughly 10k replies. I’m also not sure how much of this is being actioned by bots.
But it’s still dominating the conversation after two weeks, and there’s no sign anything is going to change over the summer.
I’m still of the opinion Sony needs to come out and say something, although anything short of a reversal is unlikely to turn down the temperature.
I’m just not sure where we go from here: despite threats of PS Plus cancellations and boycotts, the platform holder will know how much damage is actually being done.
But publicly, in the eyes of its most vocal players, its reputation is in the toilet. I really don’t know what it does to recover without walking back its plans.
