Platinum Trophy #38: Sonic Origins
Date Earned: 18th June 2022
Dopamine Index:
I don't remember the name of the earliest game I played, but it was on a floppy disk, and it was a compilation of a few short games. One involved a maze of doors for which you had to find matching keys; another involved a large machine covered in buttons and levers, and it acted as one giant puzzle box.
If we exclude this strange selection, and a handful of other PC oddities, Sonic the Hedgehog was probably the first "proper" game I recall playing.
The arrival of the SEGA Mega Drive (or Genesis if you must) in our house was, I think, the point at which I became as obsessed with video games as I am, and its flagship series is definitely part of that picture.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, in particular, was a favourite of mine. I enjoy all the character's Mega Drive adventures, but that's the one I would play repeatedly.
I grew up a Sonic kid, then, with Mario largely relegated to his Game Boy outings — mostly Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. What a banger.
But yes, it was that blue hedgehog on the living room telly.
I don't think I was ever that good at playing, and at the time, I didn't even realise the significance of the emeralds you get from the special stages. I just loved zooming around, bopping enemies, and making it a little further every time. Well, sometimes.
Of course, I would never have thought that, some 30 years later, I'd be playing these nostalgic favourites in a professional capacity via Sonic Origins.
I realise the compilation has its flaws, but having all those classic games accessible on modern hardware is a real pleasure. I can transport myself back whenever I want. Playing Sonic's old school games just makes me happy.
I recall the Trophy list for Origins being pretty easy. You have to clear each game, but you also need to explore the full package — play Boss Rush mode, earn those Coins for the Museum, and so on.
None of the tasks are very taxing, though, and I now have the platinum representing some of my favourite games from my youth. Similar to Disney Classic Games: Aladdin & The Lion King, it's a little bizarre to have Trophies for Sonic's Mega Drive titles.
Cheers, Sonic Origins.

the wonder boy trilogy on the master system was my awakening, despite playing countless spectrum games prior... still saddens me how that series was abandoned. thrilled to have all the WB games on my switch 2 via a similar collection.
edit: I like articles like this, as opposed to those that just report on things happening on reddit!
I only heard of Origins recently, I'd played the Sonic games on The Sega Mega-Drive Collection but both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles were absent from the roster. Then Werehog told me about Origins and I made sure to grab a copy. Sonic Two is my favorite for the levels and the soundtrack.
I'd never played Sonic CD before Origins and I don't feel like I had missed out. Weird mechanics for sure.
Sonic 1 is just brutal at times; Sonic 2 I think has the perfect balance for all out speed and level design; but Sonic 3 and Knuckles will always be the GOAT... even if the iconic music for that level has gone.
It’s a perfect platinum, really; every trophy was enjoyable to obtain. What a fantastic collection of games.
Sonic started for me on the GameCube; i’m an adventure kid - but i did/do have the mega compilation game for the gamecube too. my favorite of the classic sonics is mania if that counts, but if not, sonic 3. sonic 3 has the least amount of levels i dislike so im taking it over sonic 2
@Thrillho it was a hard time getting used to that 😭
I’m loving origins! Completed Sonic 1 and 2 some 30+ years since owning on my mega drive. This collection is fantastic, but would have liked Sonic Spinball but can’t have them all.
@Luigia They put Sonic Spinball on the Sega Mega-Drive Collection for PS4, it's unfortunately been delisted but you can still find copies online. It's a great collection and I wish they'd release another one.
Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic Spinball
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
Sonic 3 and Knuckles is probably one of my all time favourite games. Reading this article has made me want to do another run. Sonic 2 is another personal fave.
Also good to see Super Mario Land 2 get some love, I had that on the Game Boy, sank hours into it as a kid
Sonic 3(and Knuckles) is my favorite out of the Genesis trilogy. But I did not get Orgins, because the music is changed for Sonic 3. Yes, music licensing is a hassle and all, I get that, but Sonic 3 soundtrack was the best. The fact that some of my favorite music from that game is missing will always bother me. 😭
While my modern experience with classic Sonic games is on the Switch because for me Sonic fits in the best on that platform, I can concur with the memories and nostalgia the collection has provided.
Space Invaders was the first game I played. So that’d be 19<cough, cough>
What is the best Sonic game? I grew up with the classics. I tried frontiers and I hated it. Probably a "Me" problem. Should I give it another chance? How is Unleashed and Generations?
Sonic will always have a special place in my gamer heart. I remember being at my friend's house, and he had a megadrive, he was playing Sonic 2, it was Chemical Plant Zone 1, and my little mind was blown. After that my parents got me a Megadrive for Christmas, and the rest of history, been a Sonic fan every since. Although the series has had rocky journeys, the games (classic and modern) have overall been great, the music will still be top notch, regardless of the quality of the game!
@FooshNickies Sonic Generations is my favourite Sonic game! Sonic x Generations is really cheap now and you get two quality games in one! Unleashed is great if you can get past the repetitive Werehog levels, but has some the best modern Sonic levels, definitely worth playing as well!
@Dimey Defintely some of mine too, especially Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap, along with Shinobi and Phantasy Star. Before that I felt I played games, after I was a gamer forever. Great memories.
