Re: These New Xbox Prices Are Truly Terrifying for PS6

ButteredCrumpet

At this rate my daughter will be able to use my consoles for a down payment on a house. Ha. What a world to live in, all this money being charged for chips that will be outdated and considered “slow” in a few years, only to then be recycled if lucky and thrown in the ground if not.

I dread to think what our future generations will dig up in hundreds of years. Just selfies of grandma with AI filters on an abandoned server farm out in a desert and electronics that only mattered for a short period of time to most.

Ah well, the march continues until the sweet release of death I guess. Even the price of that is going up and up.

Buy the tech you want now people, and expect to use it for a while.

As for Helix and PS6, who cares right, most I see online claim they’re perfectly happy with the consoles and graphics they have now, and cross gen games will certainly be the norm, so stop fretting over it all.

Don’t want it? Don’t buy it! Losing out? Not if you’re being truthful when you say you’re perfectly happy for this generation to continue.

Re: Save $100 on PSVR2 Now, Sony's Underrated PS5 Peripheral

ButteredCrumpet

@WaveBoy Thank you so much for the recommendation! I'll be trying out literally everything PSVR2 has to offer over the course of the following weeks and months that's for sure!

I do have my eye on Steam Frame, and due to my work PC essentially being a stupidly expensive gaming PC, I had my eye on Steam Frame ... however, figured splashing the smaller load out on PSVR2 gives me a chance to figure out what works for me.

I am needing to nip over to Japan in the next couple of weeks, so I shall be able to bed down with all this stuff better after that. In the meantime though I am just buying far too much crap that I'll leave my missus to open and fiddle with haha.

Also, really appreciated your comments a lot on the forum relating to media a shadow person posted

Re: Could Xbox Get Its Revenge on PS6 by Supporting Physical Games?

ButteredCrumpet

Xbox as a brand requires a whole lot more success when it comes to consistency of their exclusives and how they manage their internal studios.

There’s no point having physical as a selling point, when a large portion of what you’re producing is a mess or unwanted. (As in, compared to the success they desire, hence buying ABK).

Microsoft, just like Nintendo and even some publishers on PlayStation have been experimenting with license on a disc/physical medium, instead of the entire game install for a while now.

That isn’t a trajectory that ends in more games on physical media being produced.

All, including Nintendo and Microsoft want to end physical media distribution for gaming, they just don’t all share the same strategy of letting consumers know their hand at the same time.

Game Key Cards and licenses on a disc games existing proves that a game doesn’t legally have to be present on the physical media, and therefore isn’t a legal right to anything other than a temporary license.

The fact gamers at large are only just seemingly collectively realising this and doing anything to express their feelings doesn’t change those laws, it just means those that would have been angry 10 years ago are now educated more on what always would have upset them. These companies know this, due to the fact there’s been so little push back until now.

Xbox will do whatever Xbox does until it goes the way of SEGA or gets bought up by another large conglomerate when Microsoft give up on them, that is all. Nothing else.

I would like Sony to continue to manufacture discs for those that want them, but wanting Xbox to produce discs that may not even have an install file on, that then contain games that aren’t exclusive to PlayStation, seems like more of a loss than a win for any gaming community.

All three major players will do as they wish, and if you don’t like it, you move on and discontinue support, that is it. Nothing else happens. It never has, and though that doesn’t mean it never can, it is logically not a sensible bet to place on any company caring about physical.

They used physical as a medium to provide games when the internet either barely existed or was patchy (56K Modems and prior).

The plan has always been to have these game files be given to install, not keep, not anything but install under a temporary license.

Now the internet (for the demographics and markets these companies care about e.g high value spenders in strong currency locations), is established enough, the money to distribute and the networks to support store sellers and so on is not worth it.

Then obviously it adds a bonus of getting rid of store trading/personal lending.

There’s nothing about physical media in gaming which was ever for the consumer, it was always a method of delivery that beat the alternative (crap internet).

That’s it.

Re: EA's Controversial $55 Billion Buyout to Close Next Week

ButteredCrumpet

@Flaming_Kaiser Exactly, it’s got nuance to it. Which is why it isn’t a blanket catch all argument.

The States I lived in, myself and my partner had the same and in some cases more rights than here in the UK, and Spain and so forth.

All my original comment was that we, as in myself and my wife wish to limit the amount we fund to the Saudi’s, Kushner’s and so forth.

We also don’t support much in the way of American companies many chances we get either, but of course, people don’t stop to ask things like that do they?

So, we done? Or shall we all have a lengthy nuanced conversation about global politics, where we don’t know how one another lives, our world experiences and instead just throw cheap stones peppered with sarcasm?

Re: EA's Controversial $55 Billion Buyout to Close Next Week

ButteredCrumpet

@dodgykebaab For myself, it’s due to how you simply can’t avoid American influence. Without supporting America in some way I wouldn’t be able to have much of a bank account, a pension, investments, many car parts, TV, film, some food products, much of the internet, servers for cloud storage, game storage, game streaming, some oil, some petrol and so the list goes on.

To not support America, sadly means I’d have to not exist other than to live out in the wild.

And after living in America, I can say I’d hate to live there again, but I’d do it a thousand times over rather than Saudi Arabia.

If you don’t know the differences in how life is in the two countries you’re very misinformed. My wife can actually choose to do anything she wants to do if we were to live in America again for example.

Hell, in America I had more freedoms than I did in the UK haha.

And as far as I see, no one is having a fit.

Re: Rumour: LEGO Astro Bot Sweetens the Deal on Leaked PS1 Set

ButteredCrumpet

More Lego always gets a thumbs up for me and my purchasing habits. It’s essentially a quarter of my gaming/social room at this point.

Do question the whole PS1/Astro Bot vibe, but the games make a wonderful nod to all the PlayStation peripherals and consoles, so I’ll allow it haha.

Still need to get the Donkey Kong one too, must not forget that!

Just let me know when it’s available, either that or I can wait for my daughter to use my card and “surprise” me with it no doubt.

It’s likely all my daughters junk when I pass away anyway, so I guess it’s only fair she has some input 😂

Re: Save $100 on PSVR2 Now, Sony's Underrated PS5 Peripheral

ButteredCrumpet

@Northern_munkey Well, on the promise of it getting a bit moist, how could I not plump for the purchase! Never thought I would question marrying a VR headset, but here I am!

Jokes aside, absolutely sounds mint. So I am going to make sure to load up GT7 first, pint next to me, which I may spill and go for it!

Re: 'I Feel Profoundly Disappointed': Stellar Blade Dev Destroyed for 'AI Slop' Music Video

ButteredCrumpet

@Swandivetotheasphalt As my own daughter used to say before I reminded her the comment predated her 16 year old self by quite a wide margin.

You need to check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Don't be the guy to die on the hill defending a clearly sexualised adolescent model in a game, honestly, let the South Korean and Japanese men do that on everyone's behalf.

And also F data farms using AI unless used for the health and betterment of the world. (Pipe Dream of course)

Re: EA's Controversial $55 Billion Buyout to Close Next Week

ButteredCrumpet

My wife has decided to give up on The Sims moving forward, and I’m happy to ditch Battlefield. Not in protest as such, nothing that dramatic. Just very, very happy to lessen the amount we contribute to people like this.

Our pensions and investments are bad enough and need altering with some thought, don’t want to needlessly add to someone’s riches so they can spread hatred.

Inadvertently is one thing, but not going to consciously do it. There’s enough stains on every community I’ve ever been a part of, without funding it to be furthered elsewhere in life.

I only list those games as those are the only two EA games we play.

And I will never forget their research into playerbase manipulation during various other court cases. It was bad enough then.

This is our line in the sand.

Anyway, that is all.

Re: Save $100 on PSVR2 Now, Sony's Underrated PS5 Peripheral

ButteredCrumpet

@UltimateOtaku91 I legitimately doubt he has a console at this rate. Whilst Xbox executives were on X apologising for the something silly like 16 or 20 outage, he was on PureXbox claiming to be having a whale of a time playing just fine.

Yet somehow the executives at Xbox couldn’t so much as load into a game physically or digital.

I’m calling bull.

Re: Save $100 on PSVR2 Now, Sony's Underrated PS5 Peripheral

ButteredCrumpet

@Northern_munkey Fun fact, own GT7 and never loaded it up! Yes, my missus has already called me all the names you’re now thinking for me.

So, say I buy this PSVR2, it’s going to genuinely be banging on it? I’ve seen footage, but it’s only the blokes on DF zooming in to an inch of my own patience never mind theirs.

I adore racing games, but I’ve always left GT7 for that month or week where I feel I can just zone out truly. So I guess with the headset it would be even more so!

Anyway, you and others have absolutely sold me! Crumpet for all, and maybe a dark chocolate Toblerone too!

Re: 8 Ways Sony Must Improve the PS Store for Our All-Digital Future

ButteredCrumpet

@wildcat_kickz This is key, and circles back to a comment I made before this one. If discs and cartridges meant ownership, cartridges from Nintendo and discs from Xbox would have to put the game in its installable form on the medium.

Game Key Cards and discs with licenses only on them wouldn’t be legally a thing. So yes, the entire rights surrounding what is the medium of distribution and what it legally means to the IP owner and consumer needs a revamp.

Tapes, cartridges and discs, all used by Devs/Platforms/Publishers because they are an effective install medium. They were used back when the internet in most of the world wasn’t at a point to reliably provide an install file in a timely manner.

The way these businesses see it, is that for many of their demographic, that install medium as a method of installation is redundant in a day and age whereby people have ever more reliable and faster connections.

Do I think physical should have its rights changed and kept for those without reliable connections? Yes.

Does a business see it that way? No.

So yes, we need to be discussing rights and what exactly they are. As Sony’s refund policy shows, they speak money, their marketing team were paid for with said money to make consumers feel they care about their wants, needs and desires.

Needless to say Sony’s PR team seem to be on holiday chronically or chimps at this point. I’m not sure to be honest.

Re: 8 Ways Sony Must Improve the PS Store for Our All-Digital Future

ButteredCrumpet

@Zuljaras Agreed on all fronts with both yourself and @get2sammyb.

My only pushback is on your pushback too, which is that at the moment no one in the console space offers selling and trading of digital games. (Which I think would be an amazing feature).

The closest I can think of is Nintendo, their Game Key Cards are a digital (cloud like) license that is stored on the cartridge. That then authorises (when inserted and kept inserted), the use of the software the license pertains to.

However, you can then take it out, trade, sell and store the license itself physically.

Now, that technically is what Xbox do with some titles on disc already, and many aren’t happy with that. However, it creates some friction and backlash (both for Nintendo and Microsoft).

I would actually like Nintendo to implement a blank cartridge, with the same encryption that I could store all my digital licenses for example.

Same if we could have a device much like a cryptocurrency hardware wallet for PS6/5 or Xbox and so on.

However, as you pointed out, a big benefit to digital only is the control a platform holder has and the lack of trading/second hand selling.

I’m not sure how this hurdle could be jumped over in a way that works for all. As a short period of time will teach you on Nintendo Life, people really want that data on a storage medium, and not so much the license.

However, one thing YouTubers, consumers and the like are missing, is that if “owning” the disc/cartridge meant “ownership” and the right to play the game without the internet … Xbox license only discs and Game Key Cards wouldn’t be legal.

I think both yourself and Sammy put forward some great thoughts and like I say, agreed with all.

I wouldn’t want to be the person that tries to tackle all this though, or the team, as to me a lot of this is simple to implement and change, but I fear I’d just be met with shareholders shaking their heads.

Re: Save $100 on PSVR2 Now, Sony's Underrated PS5 Peripheral

ButteredCrumpet

@EfYI @GeeEssEff Aye up!

Thanks for the replies! I’ll give it a whirl then and see what happens, thankfully I think I’ll be good with the solution of pushing the smaller framed glasses I have back a bit.

I just didn’t want to plump for missing out after all this time based on the fact I don’t have 20/20 vision without glasses.

Then the additions to lenses that were advertised seemed like more faff that it’s worth until I know if I even enjoy it as an experience and concept.

So thanks again, sale made, you’re both owed commission. 😂

Re: In the Busiest Gaming Month of the Year, PS5's Control Resonant Will Take Up a Lot of Your Time

ButteredCrumpet

@yohn777 Okay then, thanks for at least doing Remedy’s work for them and preventing anyone from having a view or experience different to your own.

I assumed it was FSR for base on PS5 as it looked horrendous. However, my idea of horrendous and yours will differ.

Forgot this was not actually a discussion board but an opinion that has to mimic others board.

And yes, Alan Wake 2 did run like utter trash on PS5 to begin with. And no, I’m not waiting months for a game to improve like wine with age.

People are paid to ship a game in full, not in parts I have to wait to complete like a jigsaw 5 months later.

God people defend everything but a unique opinion on this site.

Re: In the Busiest Gaming Month of the Year, PS5's Control Resonant Will Take Up a Lot of Your Time

ButteredCrumpet

@sanderson72 @yohn777 Aye up!

I played it on the base PS5 at the time, and I think there’s something about the FSR and framerate that really knocked me off liking it.

As I then played it on my work PC (out of sheer frustration), and found it to be so much better.

Same for that game they released on Xbox, for the life of me can’t think of the name of it now, Quantum something maybe?!

Horrendous FSR implementation to the point it felt just muddy somehow.

I think I’m just too high up on my pedestal to sacrifice some things, but then I totally get others won’t be impacted or see it. Something about my mind just couldn’t process it right at all.

Which I know sounds odd given the great time clearly many had with it on console, I just think Remedy and FSR don’t work for my mind at all.

The whole thing really confused me at the time, as I’m not remotely a demanding gamer by choice at all, yet for some reason Remedy’s games really feel like they chug along for me on console, visually speaking.

Alan Wake 2 for example, it wasn’t a great experience for me, yet really got through it for the story.

Their entire development seems to just rely on a lot of grunt work and far less in the optimisation part of things. So it’s no surprise my PC was such a stark difference.

But I do hope I feel different about this next game they release, I really do.

My partner on the other hand (who’s not a Dev like me and likes cozy games and shooters), didn’t see any issue like the both of you.

So I think my eye is just trained to pickup on problems to the point where I need a bar to be hit maybe. Who knows?!

Never had these issues with other developers work though in recent memory.

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

ButteredCrumpet

@Rich33 Oh, absolutely, Devs are lazy by design in many ways. Even I’ll try to shortcut everything at times and then come up against a brick wall I then ironically spend more time working around than if I’d have taken my time.

Being creative and then working to rigid board of director style financial expectations and checkpoints simply don’t go well together. Yet then to be in the workforce you have to accept your way is the best creatively, but there way ensures you at least get things out the door in a timely manner and actually profit from the work. (Hopefully of course).

It’s why I hate working on a project that has a release date, as I know the moment so much as anything slips on that date, people are going to want answers, and the answer never tends to be management, yet usually the creative people who actually make the product.

It’s the equivalent of my home renovation right now, if I needed to hire a project manager, and the time slipped and the budget went overboard, okay well I’m not going to then refuse to hire the plasterer or the electrician unless they were personally responsible for the entire deadline I was promised, the budget as a whole and the workload of everyone.

But, I can reminisce about days gone by all I want, yet it’ll never bring the industry back to what it was. The moment it started to make more than Hollywood, people who knew nothing about games or the development process invested, and then grew in their controlling stakes and oversight. That’s never going to reverse in my lifetime.

Cerny is a great man, with a brain the size of a supercomputer and a timid exterior to boot. (Very direct when angry or stressed I might add).

The data compression throughput is a massive stride in the right direction.

Technically put that chipset in a PS5 and there would be a remarkable difference development wise, so PS6 power to process, decode, render and so forth combined with the data actually being there to do so, not waiting cycles it’s amazing.

It’s the same for the AI upscaling with PSSR, it needs data, the more it can be fed the quicker its response will be, and when discussing aliasing and tracing of light bounces, it’s vital that information is known when it’s asked, otherwise it relies on an approximation, which then downshifts us to basically baked in light models and PS5 FSR.

And agreed on ambition with studios, the first title I worked on for PS5 I was already complaining about what I couldn’t do. I mean my entire creative process is about ensuring what you see is as close to what you would dream of.

So even I’ve had to scale back my expectations and thoughts, now plonk that mindset into a 23 year old who has no restraint, then add management that couldn’t manage themselves out of a paper bag, it’s a nightmare … then results in crunch.

Studios need to work with what they have so much better, but then it’s so odd to say that knowing at the beginning of a console lifecycle we have chaps like Cerny popping in to ask what we want next haha. We have to be constrained, yet forward thinking. It’s odd.

Like I don’t have experience as a musician, but to imagine a musician having to think of not just how their album sounds now on music hardware, but what they want and how to account for it in a decades time, it’s insane.

Re: In the Busiest Gaming Month of the Year, PS5's Control Resonant Will Take Up a Lot of Your Time

ButteredCrumpet

I really want to like this, but the muddy look of Control left me feeling really rather nauseous to be honest. There’s something about Remedy and their console rendering that really doesn’t work well for me at all.

So, I’m really into the lore and general story, but I’m crossing my fingers this doesn’t look like a smeared painting on PlayStation. As Control at times felt like I was playing a character that was under water, having mud thrown at them and then having blurred vision on top!

I know their rendering issues that caused this on the console, but I’m just not aware of what they’re doing with this game to avoid some of the issues I faced.

Anyway, looking forward to it, but going to need some more footage to be sure!

Also playtime seems like a bonus too! So good on them for that!

Re: Save $100 on PSVR2 Now, Sony's Underrated PS5 Peripheral

ButteredCrumpet

I’ve tried VR once, and I know it sounds stupid, but being in development doesn’t mean you just magically access every peripheral ever made.

So, my question would be;

I wear glasses, sometimes contacts. But forgetting the promo fluff for the headset, will I be okay?

I don’t get motion sickness currently, in any activity that could trigger it, so I’m most worried about glasses.

Can someone who owns it, and sometimes wears glasses provide an update on if it’s okay to use?

I’ve always avoided using it in the studios I’ve had access to it in, as I don’t want the embarrassment of it not fitting right or working right for me.

Anyway, I know I’ll love the games and love VR as a concept and what I have toyed with over the years, so just need confirmation with the spectacle aspect haha.

Thanks in advance!

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

ButteredCrumpet

@Rich33 And just to add to that, (as we all know I love talking about my work and hobby and could do so all day) Naughty Dog is a good example of why we need to always provide further generational points of pushing forwards.

ND notoriously push the console so much at the end of its lifecycle, they’ve had years to share material internally with other studios, really knuckle down on finding their own workarounds and so forth.

This is the bit many seem to miss out thinking of though, studios like that can’t push a console to its limits when it’s not available in the first place.

To see what Naughty Dog and Insomniac achieve next, we need to push forwards with the technology, both software and hardware.

I work mainly in texturing in modelling, so for example, how PS6 handles textures and streaming of data is genuinely beyond what most optimisations of current PC players are even capable of.

So forget 4K, PSSR etc, but just the game, the models, the assets and the textures, I can plop a threadripper in my work PC and a 5090 and I’m still not achieving the timings of a PS6.

This is due to the collective of the board, chipsets and so on all working in harmony to cut out all the chatter internal parts in a PC have that get in the way. Like RAM being further away, physically and then some low level drivers being required for various things to just operate and “talk”.

Much like the PS5 Dev Kit we used when I worked at Sony literally used arrays of hard drives to emulate the SSD, which at that point no PC consumer could buy, even us!

So yes, this is what I get excited about. As if we truly want lifelike, or even not life like, but more detail, higher resolutions, bigger worlds, or smaller worlds with incredible detail, lighting that appears genuinely real. All that is going to take progress in the hardware realm far beyond what even a 3K PC is capable of.

And it’s only possible first on console, as unlike PC, you have one or two main companies working together to truly have the hardware speak to what we can use, the consumer can use and what is the best possible outcome.

Where as Microsoft doesn’t work with say MSI to create the best motherboard, graphics card, RAM and so on.

So that’s the odd situation you see a lot, I don’t think PS5 has been fully taken advantage of just yet. But then I also don’t think some of the ideas we want as Devs are possible on it either.

If someone claims there’s nothing to improve the PS5 for them, then no, they won’t care for path tracing, streaming of data faster with increased load times and so on. As they claim they’re happy with what they have.

Like you with 60FPS, my partner couldn’t care what frame rate she plays at, seems annoyingly unable to see the difference and doesn’t even care for 4K at all either.

Yet that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want many of the other features better hardware could provide.

Price is the issue. And that issue(s) is impacting everything from food to the production of JCB diggers, so yes, price is going to be an issue in every part of life, but the push for industry to better, innovate and develop shouldn’t just grind to a halt.

I mean I can play Resident Evil on my Switch 2, so why do people need to spend money on a PS5 Pro to play it? We need to get out of the mindset that FOMO means industry development should stand still.

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

ButteredCrumpet

@Rich33 Absolutely agreed on all fronts as per usual with your posts I find!

With regards to cross-gen, I think you make for a very valid case in regards to PS6, it means just like PS5 Pro, it doesn’t make the PS5 redundant and that can remain the lowest entry point … yet the increase in power is available for those that want it.

However, the increase in feature set and fidelity won’t diminish what someone only affording or wanting the PS5 can experience, as what they can experience isn’t worsened from the existence of better.

What they can personally experience could be better with more funds, but the experience with their console doesn’t magically get worse just because something more powerful exists.

In the same way a 5090 doesn’t make a 4090 worse by its very existence. This (admittedly easy to get into) attitude that many of us fall for from time to time, is that by technology moving forwards people are “missing out”, or it’s “unfair” and so forth.

That’s just it, even when one purchases a PS5 Pro, for none Sony exclusives one is already “missing out” and “behind” as far as what a high end PC setup can offer.

There’s always better, and better existing or being pushed for shouldn’t mean it’s a negative for the industry.

We should encourage better to be always pushed for, and historically better comes at a price, better customer service, reliability, craftsmanship, etc.

I’m not saying it should, but again, this is the way it’s always been, so to expect Sony to just not release a PS6 because “people are happy with PS5 and Pro” isn’t how any major industry works.

When I helped people with my old account many moons ago at the release of PS5 on here, so many people told me they’re sticking with PS4, what more could PS5 possibly offer, well, normalising a SSD that wasn’t even available on PC consumer rigs for a year following its release for a start.

That’s the kind of innovation we need, because then this massive increase is normalised in the PC and console space, meaning the lower entry point for consumers avoids a mechanical hard drive, and so even the low tier options are still years ahead.

Again, had those premium features not been available, developers like me would still be needing to cater towards old development “cheats” to even get a game to run on a mechanical drive. Much like the PS4.

As for Devs being lazy, as in studios, yes. Agreed. It’s also a platform holder male chicken sizing competition shall we say, issue too.

Take Insomniac, now when I worked at Sony, all the studios share the technology and advancements. Not so much now being at a third party currently.

Which then makes third party look terrible, or lazy and so on. Yes we can have access to the documentation, the Dev Kit, but then we don’t have access to internal presentations, PDF documents and emails discussing how to do something code wise that could save us 10 extra frames, or render a level 30 seconds quicker.

We then have to wait for the studios to put that documentation in the public studio domain, which then gives them an advantage.

It’s an odd game to be in, what I know currently that the PS6 brings, I know personally I won’t want to be without it.

Look at the Switch 1, crippled the moment it came out, there’s so much we can do as developers that the worst thing we could have is stagnation.

Re: This New PS5 Daughter Raising Sim Has 235+ Trophies at Launch

ButteredCrumpet

This makes me question a lot about the gaming landscape, whilst simultaneously answering a lot. My mind went on a complex journey trying to make sense of what I’ve just read.

(I’m just going to ignore the fetishised way certain developers from certain locations view women and young adults. They already do a wonderful job of speaking for themselves.)

As a father of a 16 year old daughter, the best of memories don’t need a trophy, and the bumps in the road don’t come with a save point and off button.

I don’t think I have ever read anything to make me want to get a trophy added to my account less than this.

However, each to their own, and at this point I’m tempted to pay Balaam to provide me with a video gameplay walkthrough!

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

ButteredCrumpet

@J2theEzzo I actually completely agree with many of your points, and not to worry, I’m never truly upset talking on here. I just love to debate and question things more than anything (sort of what I do all day at work haha).

I just more than anything don’t think the two of us debating luxury purchases when both being guilty of such to many, is a hill either of us should die on. We are somewhat the elitists to many. Even though we still pale in comparison to many a person in the world that’s destroying it as we speak.

And on not backing down, and wanting access and freedom and choice, rather than elitism, I agree again completely.

However, that’s us agreeing without needing to title one another with anything other than two users of the site.

I’m struggling to think how to explain the following, as it’s hard not to have others interject and start a flaming war I think people say nowadays.

But part of this elitism is no doubt coming from manufacturers, the problem isn’t just that though. It’s that elitism is deeply embedded in the community and has been since before the Matrix and Voodoo graphics cards existed going on for decades now.

Now we see it with you and I, the website in general, comments. Even if Sony released a console called PS6, and it was £500, it would still be the case that the community and websites would find reasons for division and elitism.

Like how I wanted to know more about the PlayStation fight stick, to only face comments saying “oh but this brand is superior, buy this!” “Oh for your money you could buy this if you’re even serious about fight sticks!”

Again, not of those recommendations were based on anything much more than what a company has told fans to repeat on their behalf to help sell the brand. Much like PSSR, it was dog awful for us developers to work with to begin with, wasn’t remotely the improvement Sony sold it as.

Now it is, and getting great, really great in fact, but yet the community then took elitism on their backs and forwarded Sony’s message for them.

Now, I do think we need a PS6 at a calmer price, and maybe even a cheaper no frills Xbox Series S version too. However, without like I said starting some debate and so on, what I know currently is that the £1,000 price is not remotely a thing internally, a cheaper version has been in development for a while, and so there’s actually little need to “worry” as a fan of PlayStation compared to what is being repeated online.

The 1K option is literally just a baseless rumour based on estimated cost to purchase the products, but that’s based on no one knowing literally anything of the AMD deal, or many other things.

So I do think the elitism of pushing for the best needs to stop (hence why I cancel PC talk the moment it goes that way). As it’s a race to the bottom and most costly for consumers.

However, as far as pricing for the next generation it’s better than people think as far as what options will be available.

Honestly, I’m sort of looking to people knowing at least what I know. Because my gosh will a lot of analysts and rumour merchants be lucky to be listened to in a year or two.

The public will know more in 3-6 months anyway. But I do agree with you!

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

@Ristar24 Mega Drive and Saturn! Now those are some memories, and even my beloved Dreamcast with the little in controller game save device that allowed for tamagotchi like fun on the go!

Though I adore many a long list of AAA exclusives on many a console, my heart is always going to be in the smaller titles too.

It’s why I’m flocking back to Nintendo of late, after avoiding the Wii, Wii U, Switch in a row, myself and my partner are now loving what they offer. It’s like entering an entirely new world of gaming.

Yet that new world of gaming is actually not all that innovative at times, not all that new at all in its premise, yet it is offering sheer unadulterated fun!

Like my N64, four player local coop, done. No drama, no demands from developers, I just booted up Goldeneye and away I went.

Now, I boot up CoD, and my gosh, dare you play split screen on a console and you’re asking for glitches, errors, janky frame rates and so on.

Same with frame rates, we now (even in game development as my area of work), put shiny puddles that Digital Foundry will ooze over rather than consistent frame pacing, decent netcode and 60FPS.

It’s all just so ridiculous to pick up a Switch 2 this afternoon, and within seconds (for cheaper than a PS5 standard AA or AAA) game, I’m getting joy, game sharing on the sofa and laughter back in the home.

I love a fair few of Sony exclusives, but I can see myself focusing more on having the console for exclusives and going Nintendo for my main video game “entertainment”.

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

@Ristar24 I remember my first PC was an Amstrad 464 (dad got it me with loads of tapes and books on programming).

Roland on the Ropes was the first game I loaded up on tape, took about 20 or more minutes from memory.

Then I learned to code in BASIC and the first thing I did was a clock, then a Ball Breaker type clone.

It all felt so amazing and like the world was my oyster. Then I invested lots in physical PC titles, only for them to become old fashioned the moment Valve got a grip.

And now I use a PC for work (Dev), but even I game on occasion on it and wonder what the world is coming to.

Console players seem to want consoles to become PC’s, PC gamers seem to think they’re God tier despite the obvious lack of understanding that I’d expect God tier too if I had spent what my work PC cost. Which is currently 3-4 times the cost of the estimated for PS6.

It’s all just so lacking in gaming, as in even this site, it’s so focused now as a conversation about purchase habits of gamers, physical versus digital, rights (yet few seem to understand their rights as they are now), and so much more.

Yet when I was gaming growing up it was gaming, sharing games with mates, playing at a mates house and that’s it. We didn’t drag parents because they bought Timmy a console we wanted, we just went his house to play it or missed out.

I just can’t get over how no matter which direction you turn, it’s all downhill and nothing about gaming. Windows issues, Sony, Microsoft with regards to Xbox, Nintendo escaping it all only to be only marginally better in some ways and worse in others.

It’s all just so depressing as a subject now, I didn’t think Ubisoft was the devil, I just loaded up their game and played it. I didn’t worry about a CEO making a statement, because I was too busy playing his studios games.

There’s something to be said about remaining blissfully unaware, the more aware of the gaming landscape you become, the worse it’s all become. Yet this isn’t a new thing, corruption and terrible behaviour has existed since its inception.

It’s just we didn’t have websites pushing out the news, same can be said for tabloids and people fearing for various things in their lives instead of living them.

As a Dev, honestly, if retro or PC gaming is where you feel you’re being drawn to, do it. Just don’t bother staying as up to date on what businesses are doing, because even when people don’t hear of trouble, assume there is.

And assume it doesn’t need to impact your hobby unless you allow it.

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

ButteredCrumpet

@J2theEzzo See, I bought two PS5’s at release. So then it would be assumed, as a fan of PS exclusives I’d go on to buy the PS6, PS7 and so forth until I decompose into nothingness. I mean I’ve bought every other PlayStation, so it only makes sense to continue what I love doing for a hobby.

Now, counting offers I received upon purchasing those two at release, I paid around you paid for one console, granted the Pro model and with a disc drive in your situation.

So for me personally, that £700 ish I spent at launch paid off well compared to if I’d paid £700 ish for just one console years later to play the same generation of games.

With a trade in for your PS5, you got £300, which brought the total you paid for the PS5 Pro down to £400.

So you paid £400 when you could have just got a base PS5 (new of course), for less than the Pro.

Again, to many you spent money on something you didn’t need to, you didn’t need a Pro model to provide a new warranty, you just needed a new PS5 base model.

Remember, there’s many here that can’t even afford to buy a PS5 to this day, so when you bring up about buying luxuries, that’s exactly what you did. You bought a luxury, traded it in and went on to spend yet more of your money to purchase an even larger (financially) luxury.

Most I know think it’s a shame console makers even do Pro Models at all, and so to them your encouraging Sony to manufacture and R&D a Pro console would be a downside to your own financial behaviour.

After all, you’ve encouraged Sony to do mid-gen refreshes of their products, that they release in an attempt to make people feel they’re missing out and “need” it.

Ergo, not any different to a PS6.

By purchasing a PS6 I am encouraging a company I like the exclusives of, to continue making said consoles and exclusives.

Of course we could lament until we’re dead regarding capitalism, luxury items and so forth. Yet as a person that literally only has one hobby that can be seen as luxury, I’m already in the minority.

For my personal wealth level people are out there buying fancy dinners, champagne because it’s a Tuesday, driving flash cars, going on so many holidays, flash clothes and so on.

I just hike, listen to music, watch films, buy them all physically and do mountain biking and gaming.

The same notion that you apply to the PS6 being a bad product, myself and many others apply to the “Pro” version of consoles.

So I guess neither one of us will budge, as you seem like you want to morally question those that purchase a new console, unless it’s yourself and a Pro model (that most in the world can’t afford already, never mind a PS6).

And I won’t budge on feeling confident that a PS6 would provide me with features and years of entertainment I enjoy.

I mean what you rather I do? I don’t mean as an argument, but with my own hard work and earned money what should I do instead of spending it on a PS6 to entertain myself and my wife and potentially daughter too?

Honestly, I’m so very confused why my spending should be scrutinised by not only the tax office, the government, public at large, but then now also fans of the same hobby as mine.

Is purchasing a console prior to you bad, and therefore only beneficial until you pull the plug and purchase? Are all those people before you idiots, sheep, shills?

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

ButteredCrumpet

@J2theEzzo I just don’t understand why you feel it necessary to jump online, to then insult and try to name those who purchase a console at launch (a popular thing to do in the console gaming world), a sheep or a whale.

Couldn’t someone who purchases a PS6, just be exactly that? A person that makes a purchase that you haven’t that in no way shape or form impacts you positively or negatively.

I have a Freelander 2, but I don’t try to walk around coming up with slurs for people who purchase or lease a new car instead of using an older one. I mean they all get us to the location right? So why bother with a new car, what utter idiots!

You say you bought a PS5 Pro, a console most on here (prior to the launch), said was a waste of money, only idiots would buy them, whales, shills, sheep etc.

I mean the comments were in the hundreds, for people just like you that purchased an item that can’t play any exclusive games (more so than PS5), graphical improvements aren’t needed (as people here claim we can wait for PS6, as base model PS5 is more than enough).

It’s just you admit to buying a console that offered you nothing at all other than newer and shiny and improved graphics/upscaling.

So your likely reasons for a PS5 Pro purchase are exactly the same as my reasons for a PS6 purchase.

As a developer I will just never understand this habit to jump on why people purchase anything in this hobby. No one I have ever worked with stops to insult or question someone’s purchase of a console or PC or anything of the like.

You’ve decided you don’t want a PS6 at launch (likely given your attitude towards those that do), yet according to many a person here, you’re a sheep, idiot and so on for purchasing a PS5 Pro.

So you are the person you’re questioning, you’re just a generation behind in your purchase of where I’ll be. I don’t see that as a good or bad thing. I just see it as you’ve done something with your money you would prefer to do. That’s all.

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

ButteredCrumpet

@J2theEzzo And yet, despite all this, certain people will still say they're ready to drop ~£1000 on the PS6 at launch.

Does that make a 'whale' or a 'sheep'?

Someone who has a pension, investments, no mortgage, money coming in regularly. Like myself.

A sheep would be someone that follows trends, the trend on this website appears to be to dislike everything Sony and not want to buy the next console, so it would make those not buying it "by following the heard" so to speak, sheep by definition.

The mass consumer decision is the sheep decision, the one against the grain (so if PS6 doesn't sell well, and everyone here hates on it as a hobby instead of games for a hobby), is the minority in what a lot of people are speculating.

As in, a consumer such as myself would be a minority if poor sales number speculations are to be taken seriously.

Whale, maybe yes. Not purchasing blindly though, I'm not dumb, or I wouldn't be comfortable enough to debate buying such items.

Re: This Revelation Should Terrify All Console Fans, Particularly Those Looking Forward to PS6

ButteredCrumpet

Put me down to buy two, then maybe a third for the daughter. If I could pay now and then Sony eat the increase in costs later upon release, that would be much appreciated.

I bought two Switch 2’s based on the fact they will only keep increasing in price, so might as well catch up on what’s missed during Switch 1,2 and Wii now rather than wait.

Just wish the PS6 was physically available so I could purchase it and get it over with, but of course, that’s not how life works.

When the PS6 does release tail end of 2027-2028, I will be there. Until then, I will sincerely hope that all this price increasing nonsense slows!

And yes Sony management need to be more transparent with the public, keep physical for those that want it, increase benefits and rights of digital and blah f-ing blah.

Also, Switch Virtual Game Card lending with family, take note Sony. I want more of that.

Re: Early Data Suggests Unspectacular Start for Halo on PS5

ButteredCrumpet

There’s definitely something to be said about Microsoft getting the Xbox brand to be far more of an “Rawwwrrr ‘Merica” thing.

I think Xbox and I think Monster Energy, Red Bull, pickup trucks popular with people that aren’t in any trade, Budweiser and so on.

When I lived in America so many wanted an Xbox, or had one.

Yet now back in the UK it’s just not got the brand association with British people. (And in other locations I live/visit like Spain it’s even less than here in the UK). Oddly what makes Xbox so popular (big, brash, loud) is what actually puts us off a lot of things associated with it.

Having said that, I do love some Xbox franchises (even the ones they have now bought, looking at you Rare), but I need them to actually do things with them.

Give me Banjo and Kazooie on PS5 and Switch, new adventure game, platformer, whatever.

There’s just so much they could be doing and instead they squander it all, and though I’ll pick up this Halo, as a little keep sake on PS5, as I have fond memories of the original, really, no multiplayer?!

I think I just see so much potential with Xbox as a brand, but it’s lost in so much corporate nonsense that they don’t seem to know how to actually be a console brand at all. It’s so odd.

Halo sales will be interesting, and I look forward to the next few years of being told x game isn’t on y system, then it is, but it may be, it’s been developed, but scrapped for that system, nope it’s back again, maybe.

Xbox is like the corporate people I’ve worked with when they’ve gone off on drug fuelled evenings. Full of mad ideas and crazy thoughts, and in that moment idiotic enough to share them out loud.

Really looking forward to this a lot. I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic, because I’ve been burnt a few times with my own excitement levels over the years haha.

But overall, later this year is going to be pretty good indeed release wise, now I just Alien Isolation 2 already, as in right now ideally. I’m play it without textures at this point. 😂

Re: Newly Independent Double Fine Has to Lay Off 23 Devs to Ensure Survival of the Studio

ButteredCrumpet

@ShadowRJ People like me have gotten into development due to having a strong passion for that form of creation, despite it being a rocky road at times.

The same can be said for your collecting of physical games, it’s a rocky road littered with unknowns and the possibility it will all go.

Yet we both keep going, forging forwards with our passions, because what else is there?

You don’t collect games and feel like something so vital is missing from your life, and I stop working in game development and get a job at Amazon.

Life without creative endeavours for anyone of a creative persuasion, is an empty one, and therefore any way to make money from it is a bonus.

Much like those games you collect, it’s not all that sensible given what else you could be doing from the perspective of say a financial advisor and based on where the industry is going.

So I guess that is why, because without creative people forging on, there would be no music, TV, film, gaming. Just living out a tyrannical dictatorship of those above us in life, with no reward other than to live another day.

Failing that, it’s a hit of fun and you get paid. If you’re lucky it sometimes lasts longer than a few years too 😂

Now a more important thing to ask, after working there myself, is why anyone moving forwards would want to work in Microsoft’s gaming division. Now that really wouldn’t be something I’d do again unless it was silly money.

6 months at Xbox could net someone 3 years of pay elsewhere depending on what studio they are with, or what level they are coming in at. So that alone is reason enough for many.

It happens in all employment. We could ask why people work at Tesco when they lay people off each year, or Amazon, or McDonald’s.

But we as consumers only see the failings of business we actually feel invested in, we don’t tend to notice if a thousand people get let go from a company producing a meal deal and soft drink.

Re: Amidst Sony's Disc Debacle, Capcom Sales Data Is a Brutal Reality Check for Fans of Physical Media

ButteredCrumpet

To be fair, the partner and I are only really buying physical for Switch and Switch 2 (catching up on all missed on the console or what we’d prefer portable).

So, even though I’d love to see more reports of physical games sold on PS5, I’m definitely part of the issue where this is concerned.

However, I guess just more reports like this will be analysed and scrutinised until the 2028 date approaches. PS Portal, along with being able to share the same copy of a game in realtime with my partner killed physical for me.

One copy of a multiplayer game and two people playing in the house at the same time? Yes please!

Do wish there were a way for physical to continue for those that want it, but it wouldn’t be from Sony directly.

Re: Naughty Dog's Intergalactic Targeting 2027, Reliable Snoop Says

ButteredCrumpet

@wildcat_kickz Oh agreed, I saw on PureXbox him commenting going "not impacting me, all fine!"

Interesting, given the outage was that impactful, heads of Xbox were publicly talking about it and apologising.

I mean he literally did on behalf of Xbox what he claims Sony do, naysay and apoligise on their behalf. Yet he was talking about his studies not long ago, so likely not even worked for a business yet.

Just makes me laugh.

Re: Poll: Did You Buy Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5?

ButteredCrumpet

Planning on buying it, just not yet, as I have so many games to get through on a few platforms including this one! So I’ll slap the purchase button on it in time, just likely a few months from now.

I’m in no rush, as it would be replaying nostalgia not really a must buy. Glad to see it open to a wide range of people from a differing audience though.

Re: Sony's New Spider-Man Movie Tipped for Explosive Box Office Opening

ButteredCrumpet

Be making sure to go see this with my partner and some friends. Seen them all so far so might as well add this one to the mix!

Hope all who see it enjoy it and all those that don’t see it enjoy not seeing it!

Not really much else to say is there? It’s a film about a bloke that isn’t allowed to age as they’ll replace him with another bloke who’s barely a bloke and then the cycle shall repeat.

All these superheroes getting older would make for far more interesting storylines for me personally, but then you’re not going to keep getting constant young bums on seats attaching themselves to the IP.

Spider-Man having hip displacement, and swinging to collect his pension whilst forgetting where his house keys were across New York, that sounds like a film I’d be down for.

Re: GTA 6 Region Locks Raise More Questions About PSN's Flaky Infrastructure

ButteredCrumpet

@Slideaway1983 Oh, I adore physical everything far more than games for the most part, so I admit I am also part of the problem as such. Games is the one place I tend to prefer convenience, due to things like PS Portal and Steam Deck and PC etc. That, and due to being a human, it's unlikely I'll be around in a few hundred years when I have time to reply game after game.

I do find the interest in GTA moving forwards to be somewhat of a barometer for things in the market though, it'll be one to watch, that's for sure!

Re: GTA 6 Region Locks Raise More Questions About PSN's Flaky Infrastructure

ButteredCrumpet

@Rich33 One would expect them to, wouldn’t you? It shall be interesting to see who speaks to playing it upon release that have said many a contradictory statement prior. I suspect an influx of quiet accounts, changes in usernames or “well I’ve accepted it now” events shall take place upon release.

I like to imagine many millions sticking to their word, but it’s a rare thing to see nowadays in any part of life. I do hope to be wrong though.

Re: GTA 6 Region Locks Raise More Questions About PSN's Flaky Infrastructure

ButteredCrumpet

This is all ridiculous of Sony, however, to critique anything about this, PSN is available in roughly the same amount of regions as Xbox Network, and both amount to multiple handfuls at the very least.

They’re both available in roughly 40-50 or so countries, so unless you have hands with fingers to the count of many more of a normal human, this seems like a significant step down from the true number.

A handful would surely mean upwards of 5 countries.

That aside, as stated, all very silly of Sony.

Re: 'The Way It Was Meant to Be Heard': Tone-Deaf Sony Pushes Vinyl Turntable After Killing Physical Games

ButteredCrumpet

@Anthony_Daniels And to add to what you have already said, Sony has been making and marketing turntables since before the PlayStation was even an idea. Long before in fact.

So even if the PlayStation brand ceased to exist tomorrow, it would indeed still carry on producing and advertising its audio products to the intended demographic.

People are behaving like this is the first and only time Sony have had their audio department market products relating to physical media, they’ve been doing it for decades prior to PlayStation as a brand existing.

They aren’t going to stop advertising Blu-ray players and turntables because PlayStation as a separate brand is in a completely different market with different buying patterns and behaviours.

Low hanging fruit indeed.
