Sony's decision to cease the manufacture of game discs in January 2028 has led to a substantial and ongoing backlash. Every time the company posts something on social media, it gets dragged through the mud — even when the news has absolutely nothing to do with physical releases.

But sometimes, the damage is completely self-inflicted. Case in point: Sony went ahead and posted about its new turntable last night.

At a glance that's nothing too crazy — the firm has to advertise its products, after all — but the X (formerly Twitter) update is drawing serious ire because of how it's framed.

"Rediscover the warmth, detail, and ritual of vinyl with the LX3 Turntable. Drop the needle, press play, and enjoy music the way it was meant to be heard," reads the frankly tone-deaf marketing.

Indeed, it's not the kind of statement you want to be making when your company's already being slaughtered for abandoning physical media in a different field of entertainment. The timing's just so poor.

Naturally, the post has been met with a tidal wave of criticism, as thousands of replies attempt to point out the hypocrisy.

I'm left wondering if, at some point down the line, game discs will become a vinyl-like niche. Can you imagine Sony making its own disc-specific consoles and marketing them to collectors?

Maybe I shouldn't even joke about it.
