Re: 'There's a Finished Version of Gears of War PS5 Sitting on a Drive': New Game E-Day Was Almost Done

@Bettyswollocks that is definitely not the glory days I'm referring to. That was the dilution and mismanagement of the Xbox brand, where things started to go wrong. At its worst you had Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond trying to make the actual console irrelevant with that whole "this is an Xbox" campaign. That has been scrapped now and they are gone. Asha Sharma is focusing on building the brand up again and making the console the point of reference again. These are all good, positive changes for the brand. Wildly different to what the previous management tried. And Gamepass is, by whatever reason or voodoo magic, still successful.

Wow, so much hate for Xbox in the comments... feels like I had just snuck into an enemy base πŸ˜… Xbox is not focused on quick sales right now (they dropped the price of Gamepass Ultimate by a significant amount, for example). They are going through a brand exercise to restore the brand and grow over time. It's a long term plan to get more buy-in from new and returning customers. Exclusivity works for Playstation and works for Nintendo. Xbox is going back to the glory days when it worked for them as well.

Re: 'This Is Unsustainable Madness': Modern Video Game Budgets Are Out of Control

Gaming needs to go back to a profitable business model and move away from this risky investment model where some new studios come out the gate with a big AAA game that sinks the entire ship if it flops.

It's like the wise old Shuhei Yoshida once said: "Single-player games now cost so much, so they need additional income by doing remasters and porting to PC to be able to do that", which is a sound business model. I know people are tired of these, but you've heard it from the man himself; they are necessary.

I think the same goes for AA games. If a studio puts out a few of these, it is less risk and even if just one of them becomes a mega-hit, you're set for the bigger games.

Lastly, the management of these studios need to significantly improve. Stop putting single-player game studios on BS live service projects.

Re: The Critically Acclaimed Riven Remake Looks Like It's Headed for PS5

Played the original on PC when it launched back in the day. I was but a small boy, yet I remember the imagery and sound from this game with much fondness. The first real "isolated atmosphere" game I've ever played at the time and I was absolutely hypnotized by it 🀩 Seeing the first trailer for the remake in 2024 gave me genuine chills, but I unfortunately didn't have a PC. Can't wait for the console release! 😬

The fact that one person developed most of this game by himself is an incredible feat and I have a lot of respect for that... but just because a game was made by one man doesn't mean I have to like it, especially if it is not up to par. It's still competing against other games for your time and money, regardless of who worked on it. I'm usually a bit sceptical about a 3D game if I hear it had one developer.
