@get2sammyb So do you just get dibs on all the Life Is Strange coverage Sammy? Haha. Anyway, the fan base seems to be pretty mixed on this announcement but is there anything that you personally are hoping for from this adaptation? Perhaps some casting or soundtrack wishes?
This is such a great idea. Indie JRPGs often get overlooked and could really use this kind of cross promotion and exposure. I also really like how the art style is clean enough for each character to be visually recognizable and distinct even though it's all sprite work. Great job!
I honestly hate the combat. It's turn based Souls that focuses more on learning patterns than actual strategy, something a turn based RPG should excel at.
@ShogunRok I'm so curious, have you played SMTV: Vengeance this year? That and Astro Bot are probably the only two games to make me feel real joy this year.
This game has possibly the worst villains of any JRPG that I've played. Easily the worst of the modern Personas by far. What a disappointment. Definitely doesn't belong on this list.
For both Best Game Direction and Games for Impact, I'd really like to see 1000xRESIST and Harold Halibut. Fantastic games that shouldn't be overlooked.
@ShogunRok Hi Robert. Great review as always. Sorry if this has been asked already but would you still recommend this game to someone who has been struggling to enjoy anime tropes in JRPG stories recently? I find the writing style to be very bloated and predictable, with poor pacing. I found the demo to be a real slog and was calling out plot twists hours before they happened. Is this something I could expect for most of the main game as well or does it start to deviate from typical anime writing and becomes more original? Thank you!
EDIT: For context, I enjoyed the writing in SMT V: Vengeance and Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes, but really disliked the way story, pacing, and themes were handled on Persona 3 Reload.
@dskatter I 100% agree with this. Not only that, but Nintendo allocates it's extra manpower from its studios to NEW games! Grezzo, normally known for remasters, is co developing the new Zelda. Monolith Soft has an entire B team devoted to learning through helping out various 1st party projects such as Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, etc. These situations are not even remotely the same.
@OthmaneAD What an insane take. You might not like what you've played but you can't deny their catalog:
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes
Hohokum
Stray
Neon White
Solar Ash
The Artful Escape
The Pathless
The Unfinished Swan
Kentucky Route Zero
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Telling Lies
Outer Wilds
Journey
Gone Home
Donut County
Gorogoa
What Remains of Edith Finch
I feel like this game is 9 parts anime and only 1 part fantasy. When the game is trying to sell you on a character's personality by saying "she relishes in eating unconventional food" it makes me feel like they're just randomly drawing anime tropes out of a hat to assign to their characters rather than writing an actual personality.
I think the problem that more players are having isn't that these games are difficult, but HOW the developers have chosen to make them difficult. The Souls genre has been going for a while now and every entry the development team has to come up with a fresh way to keep players on their toes so the series doesn't become stale. I think this has lead to some design choices in Elden Ring that some players just don't agree with.
Let's be real here, a Souls style JRPG would be very close to SMT in a lot of ways. Punishing difficulty, dark and oppressive atmosphere, abstract story telling based on differing ideologies and recreating the world where no answer is correct , silent protagonist with fully customizable build options, multiple endings based on your decisions throughout the game. There's a reason I keep recommending SMT to all my Souls loving friends
My only issue with the Portal is the Touchpad interface. Double tapping the screen is just very unintuitive and not ideal. I would really like the option to be able to remap it whenever possible.
I'll be eagerly waiting on this one. The story is definitely my biggest concern about this game. Hashino's games don't exactly have the best writing, the best probably being Persona 4 and Digital Devil Saga
It feels so dishonest to market the new Dragon Age as Dread Wolf, the conclusion to the story in Inquisition, only for them to be like "Just kidding! We didn't actually make that game so we're calling it The Veil Guard now!" as soon as it's almost ready to be released. Just a real bait and switch.
This was a fantastic presentation! I also appreciated the nod to Etrian Odyssey. I'm so excited that turn based combat is based on the Press Turn system from SMT! In fact, it's very exciting to see a lot of these mechanics being taken from Digital Devil Saga 2.
I've been playing this the last few days and it's been a lot of fun. I especially appreciate the writing style compared to modern JRPGs. I agree with basically everything in this review. For those of you looking for a return to that PS1 and PS2 era of JRPGs, this game hits just right.
What this article doesn't mention is that this was just the shipping cost for the standard physical edition (which for PC backers, is just a code in a box). Those of us waiting on extra goodies as part of our pledge, like art books, T-shirts, soundtrack CDs, will be facing additional charges since they are shipped separately from the game itself.

Re: The End of the F***ing World's Scribe Signed for Live Action Life Is Strange TV Show
Personally I would've liked to see people from the show I Am Not Ok With This attached, as it's about as close as we ever got to a LiS show.
That being said, I'd also like to shout out Charlie Covell's other show, Kaos. Incredibly good first season that really deserves more.

@Oram77 Haha don't worry, you're not the only one dishing out this scorching hot take. Can't believe we got Serge!

@Tecinthebrain My mistake. It looks like Push Square just scores lower in general. It mostly seems to depend on who's doing the review

I gotta be honest, it's getting a little annoying that Push Square always scores lower than everyone else if the game isn't a major Sony exclusive.
