@CielloArc I understand the "garbage in, garbage out" sentiment. I use the phrase all the time at work as it is pertinent to my particular area of expertise. But given how AI works, there's not a 1:1 ratio of input to output and as I alluded before, a lot of what comes out of these things is, at best, hallucinatory. Before I gave up on AI coding assistants, I had tried numerous times to use them to help me craft a solution to a problem only to find that they spit out trash code that won't actually execute (i.e. completely making up syntax or suggesting functions that don't exist) or fails to even remotely solve the problem that I posed.
I'm a software engineer and the pressure to incorporate AI into our process is getting stronger and stronger. I can vouch for the complaints the EA developers have. These AI coding assistants can be useful for writing boilerplate code (sometimes), but giving them a problem to solve and expecting a well-thought-out, well-written solution is quite simply a joke. I'd guess that 90% of my effort (not time) goes into thinking about and solving the problem. I'm not about to outsource that only to find that I have to rewrite the majority of the hallucinatory garbage an AI coding assistant can come up with. Much faster and safer to do it myself.
I am so fine with the delay. I spent 500-600 hours on this getting the platinum, all the endings and collecting every item. I'm more than happy to wait before the obsession to collect all the new stuff arises.
@DarkTron Ooh, thank you for that! I wasn't paying attention during that part of the direct. Once I recognized the game, I looked away for a bit since I already have the PS5 version. It'll be interesting to see go down that path and see how they handle it.
I wonder what "detachable" means? Does it mean an external drive or will it be installed, as with the PS5 today?
Either way, if this simplifies their manufacturing process for the PS6, that's better. I ended up with the disc version of the original PS5 because that's all that was available. I wanted the digital only, but those were very hard to come by in the early days.
This gives me a Bloodborne-meets-modern-Doom vibes. When I read that it was first person, I dismissed it but after watching the trailer, I'll be keeping my eye on it. Looks like it could be fun.
Here's hoping all the lessons they learned from fixing the remake will continue to be learned when this ultimately releases. I skipped out on the first one until V2 was released and started receiving a lot of praise for the improvements.
I'd love to be able to get this one at release and not experience a similar level of frustration around bugs and poor performance that I guess happened with the first one.
@jorel262 Yeah, I really don't get why this has to be such a limited product. It's not like they're not producing these plates all the time already. Just stick the grey dye in the machine for a few runs, charge a "30th anniversary" premium for some extra profit and take my money already.
I was between Okay and Good and picked Good since they do give away some decent games on the Essential tier every now and then. I was a Premium subscriber, but almost never played the free games because I do also purchase games and opt for those 100% of the time because I specifically paid for them and don't have nearly enough time to delve into the "free" ones. That and the price increase made it a no-brainer to drop to Essential.
If they ever came out with a "Basic" tier that gave me access to online (backups and play) without the monthly games, I'd drop to that level instantly. I really just want my cloud backups and to summon/provide help in the Souls/Soulslikes that I play.
Good for them! It's a fantastic game and the DLC only adds to that (despite being tough as nails). It's such a rarity anymore, so I'm always happy to see when companies actually show appreciation for their employees in ways that don't start and end with pizza in the lunch room.
@Deadlyblack This is exactly my experience. I think when I first played Dark Souls (1), the closest I'd come to that kind of game were the 3d Zelda games, where there's no real "dance" to the bosses. Only, hit a few times until the weak spot is exposed, wail on that for a few hits and repeat. Souls (and Soulslike) combat is so much deeper and satisfying, even if I still get infuriated at a particularly difficult boss (like the ones in the recent Lies of P DLC).
I think it's funny how so many people are interpreting this as him saying that he'd rather make something that sucks than have it be liked. The discussion isn't "good game vs. bad game", it's "conventional vs. creative". It sounds like he'd rather it be an acquired taste rather than the equivalent of McDonald's. God forbid he doesn't want to tread the same ground that the masses have already trampled to death.
I love this line, "I want people to end up liking things they didn’t like when they first encountered it, because that’s where you really end up loving something.". It's so true. I've encountered games and especially works of art that I didn't like at first but later came to love through curiosity and repeated exposure. Dark Souls is a prime example. I played the network test version on Switch and really didn't like it, but something kept me intrigued. I bought it when it came out and grew to love it by the time I felled Gwyn. I liked it so much, I bought a PS4 so I could play the sequels and the other Fromsoft games that were never coming to a Nintendo system (at that point, anyway) and have been playing Souls and Soulslikes almost exclusively since then.
@themightyant I can understand if a developer doesn't want to include difficulty modes. It's their game; they can do what they want. If fans complain about difficulty modes, that's entirely different. If you want the harder experience, by all means, go for it. If someone else wants it easier (for whatever reason they choose), then it doesn't affect you in any way. Them completing the game on "easy" mode has (or should have) nothing to do with your enjoyment of the game or your sense of accomplishment. If anything, the 'git gud' brigade should be happy if a developer includes difficulty modes because then they can brag about how they completed the game on hard mode while naked and using an unupgraded broken sword.
@Apollo2212 Agreed! I'd rather see a 10-12 episode series than a 2-3 hour film. There's plenty of material to draw from in the game. The lore that's laid out in all the item descriptions could be flashbacks to those events happening. They could concentrate on a couple of NPC quests. Ranni or Millicent would be my top picks, though Alexander would be interesting.
I'm not too hopeful on the quality of this as video game movie adaptations don't tend to be that good but would love to be surprised. As a series though, I think it could be great. The Witcher series was pretty well received, if I remember correctly.
@DETfaninATL If you've managed to beat any of the FromSoft Soulsborne games, I'd say you'd be fine in Lies Of P. I didn't find it any more difficult than any of them (outside of the first time I played my first one). But I've been playing pretty much only these games for most of the last six years, so am, admittedly, a bit obsessed and love the challenge they provide.
@Ricketyrascal87 Oof, I was actually very close to that point when I stopped playing. And yeah, I didn't want to make it any harder than I imagine the DLC is going to be. I did the Elden Ring DLC the first time on NG+ and that was rough.
I'm very excited about this DLC. I recently finish NG and made it through most of NG+ when I paused because I didn't want to do the DLC in NG++ for the first time and don't really want to start a new playthrough.
I think this is one of the first games I bought on PS4 six years ago (for $10 if I remember right) and never got around to it. At some point, I was upgraded to the PS5 version, which still sits unplayed. I should probably fire it up at some point.
I downloaded the demo and was ready to play when the recent Lords of the Fallen 2.0 update dropped, so I started a playthrough of that first since I already owned it and had yet to play it. Once I'm done with LOTF, I might give the Khazan demo a spin.
I actually really liked the horror survival aspect of Doom 3. I know it's considered the odd man out, but I personally reserve that for Eternal, which feels like Doom crossed over with Mario. I like Eternal's combat the most, but I got stuck on a platforming section and quit playing because I couldn't figure out how to progress, which feels so silly for a Doom game.
I'm not ready to furrow my brow at From for this yet. If this DLC is more than $5-10, I'll be hesitant. The thing that has me intrigued the most is the new "combat techniques". However, if they add more scythes or katanas, I'd probably bump up the price I'd be willing to pay because I am a sucker for a good scythe.
@Rich33 Thank you for the gameplay details! The trailer was light on the actual gameplay so it's good to hear how it differs from the Soulslikes. This sounds like something to stick in the wishlist and wait for the inevitable sale while I try to thin out my bloated backlog.
@Hyena_socks Thank you for the info! I do like the challenge of Soulslikes, but am a fan of the world, exploring, lore, etc too, so hearing it's a more chill game sounds pretty nice actually (especially the dungeons). I do have Dragon's Dogma 2 sitting on my system. Maybe I'll hit that up after I finish Lords of the Fallen (which I'm loving!).
Ok, so I'm one of the three gamers who never played Skyrim (despite owning a copy for years). However, I'm a big fan of Soulslikes. Would anyone recommend this for that reason? I don't know much about this game and would want to go in as blind as possible (something I've been doing lately). I watched the remaster/remake trailer, but that's it. I don't think anyone would consider this a Soulslike, but might I find enjoyment from this game if I like those?
With this update, I finally started a playthrough. This is a fantastic Soulslike and I'm happy I started playing with the best version of the game. If other studios keep putting out Soulslikes of this caliber, I will never need to pine for a Dark Souls 4.
I was a bit bummed finding out this is more multiplayer focused, but am holding judgement until we hear more. I wasn't expecting to like Nightreign at all but had a lot of fun during the network test once I got the hang of it. Maybe this one will surprise me too.
I'm a little annoyed about this but a little relieved. I spent several months 100%ing this game (collect all items, beat all bosses, see all endings) and just finished a few days ago. I'm a little annoyed because now there are more things to collect but relieved because I don't see anywhere about this being available in the current version as DLC and I'm not buying a new edition just for this.
@__Seraph Oh yeah, I figured that's why they went left to right, but everything else seems pretty true to the film, so it was a bit surprising they decided to go that direction (pun definitely intended).
@SSaunders1122 Exactly the same for me, including the game. It didn't really affect me beyond not having other players' messages warning me about the imps hiding around the corners in the various catacombs I visited. After getting surprised a few times, I realized I had been relying on those messages and started being more careful.

Bloodborne Remake (sorry, I had to)

This got the 12-year-old kid inside me excited. The T2 games we got back then were not so good. Glad to see a better attempt being made here.
My only quibble is that the motorcycle chase scene in the drainage channel is going left to right and in the movie it was filmed right to left.
