Lords of the Fallen was a pretty good Souls-like when it first launched back in 2023, but developer Hexworks has been gradually improving it since — and version 2.0 looks to take that one step further.
Available now as a free game update, the 2.0 patch makes some big changes to the action RPG, overhauling it in various areas and enhancing the experience across the board.
Online co-op now has full shared progression, as well as a Friend Pass system, allowing you to invite a second player without the need for both players to own the game.

Combat and movement have also seen improvements made, with a view to making the game generally feel much tighter and more responsive. A dedicated jump button, more responsive attacks, snappier dodging, and improved lock-on all contribute to this.
Elsewhere, all weapon types have had an audio overhaul to make hits more satisfying; the character creator has improved options; and the game's user interface has been upgraded to make it cleaner and easier to navigate.
On top of all that, the tutorial has been revised, and there are new quality-of-life options like automatic vigor collection and visual button prompts for certain actions.
There's plenty of footage in the above video to back all this up, and it looks like a big upgrade to us. If you've played Lords of the Fallen in the past, it might be worth installing this update to see all the enhancements.

Oooooh this is awesome
I've been meaning to get round to this for a while and now seems the perfect time. It's basically Dark Souls 4!
@roe Don’t tempt me, Frodo!
Wonderful news! Sounds like the perfect time to do an Umbral playthrough!
The only complaint I had was a lack of strength weapons, I just run around with the hammer you get from beating the last game’s protagonist. Maybe less stat hard and soft locks, currently you can’t really get outrageous builds.
I've just picked this up on the playstation store. It's included in the spring sale for less than £17. A bargain! Looking forward to getting at it tonight
Playing this at the moment and it's rather good! I saw that the update downloaded earlier and noticed that the menus and UI looked a bit different.
Out of curiosity, is the combat slow paced like in most souls-like games? I prefer something closer to God of War (reboot) or Forspoken for the 5 of you that may have played it.
I've been tempted to buy it several times, but I'd like to know that it's likely that I'll enjoy it.
Gameplay videos don't always help as much as one would hope.
No need to specify that an update is free. It's implied.
Do let us know if we ever have to pay for an update so we can boycott the studio and publisher.
This sounds like a huge upgrade; might add this to the back log so!
I've been a firm believer of this game since launch. It definitely had issues but I always knew that if the devs stuck with it and kept updating/improving it the game really had the potential to be the best Non-Fromsoftware Soulslike on the market...and I think with this update it's finally reached that potential.
If you genuinely love Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, you gotta try this game. It's essentially a Dark Souls game with a Soul Reaver mechanic where you can explore in two overlapping worlds that are like different dimensions. It's sick.
"We've also increased the femininity of the female body types, with more attractive face options, and a more conventionally feminine body shape"
Why? Did players find female characters too "ugly" looking? Get real please.
@naruball I'd say combat speed is pretty comparable to other Souls-likes, if not a tiny bit quicker, but it depends on what weapons you're using. I think Hexworks probably took to heart the major criticism of their predecessor's game, which was that it felt pretty heavy and slow. Your character definitely zips around a lot faster that in Dark Souls, though. If you've played AC Shadows, your character is as fast as Naoe.
I think this update adds a "demo" of sorts, so you can play through the tutorial section without having to buy the game. There's not a TON of combat there, but maybe enough to give you a general vibe of how weapons swing, etc.
@naruball It's somewhere between Dark Souls and Bloodborne in terms of speed. But if you want a more action oriented souls-like, I'd recommend AI Limit.
@JB_Whiting To be fair, the male character faces looked pretty heinous, too. I just kinda chalked it up to being part of the grim universe the game takes place in, but I certainly wouldn't mind some new options. That said, you've probably got a helmet on most of the time, so it doesn't really matter.
@naruball I find that you can make it pretty much however you want. I like somewhere in between souls and god of war if that makes sense..its a bloody good game and one I'll revisit as soon as I actually have the time as it's a big game.
@NishimuraX Likely true with your first statement. However, I've not heard too much clamoring about this regarding Lords Of The Fallen. In fact, I've not heard much talk about this game at all.
@NishimuraX I've been joking about this for a while. EA or Ubisoft will eventually charge for bug fixes in this gaming distopia.
@Rhaoulos I can't see this ever happening. The outrage would be devastating and would be impossible to come back from. E.A. already release half complete games then release updates that slowly drip feed the rest of the game until its complete (the road to the masters being a prime example.) Dlc and expansions will almost certainly carry a fee but there are devs that do release major expansions or add ons for free such as god of war ragnarok.
@naruball "or Forspoken for the 5 of you that may have played it." Sorry I meant to address this part but overlooked it..As one of the 5 that played forspoken I can say that lords of the fallen is nothing like that. Lords has some serious heft to the combat whilst maintaining a fair bit of grace and fluidity. Forspoken felt very light and floaty in comparison. Should you buy lords? Personally I think any fans of the whole souls type of games will really enjoy it but it's a decision you'll ultimately have to make yourself. I love it and I relished the challenge it presented. Sorry to ramble on but I'm trying to give you as much info without spoiling anything as there is an awful lot of surprises especially with the combat system. Have you tried the first berzerker khazan demo? I bought the game and I think that you may prefer that over lords..
@NishimuraX that's a can of worms that I don't think anyone would ever think of opening. I'm not seeing it as a viable proposition.
@naruball it very much is. It plays like a cross between Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne. It’s open world but in the same way as the former.
@Coffeeglitch lords of the fallen isn't open world. Its very similar to the way the souls games areas are connected. Elden ring was open world..this is not.
The co-op multiplayer is a huge draw for me. But I don’t feel like dropping $80 on this game. I’ll wait.
I've kept my eye on this seeing as how they kept updating it. Watching the 2.0 trailer sold me. They have fixed everything I saw was an issue, even updating the sound effects!! Grabbed it cheap and played the tutorial section so far and it feels smooth as butter, not clunky at all! Plus it looks absolutely gorgeous.
Really enjoyed this game when I played it a month or two ago but man, ……the lock-on was atrocious and frustrating. Glad to hear it’s been improved upon. Great game if you enjoy Souls-likes! The dual world mechanic is a fantastic touch! And it’s a stunning looking game as well. I’d strongly recommend this for souls fans.
Wow, amazing that they’re still working so hard on this game. I really enjoyed it when I played it, a year or so after launch, but never finished it. Between the Pro update (which I haven’t tried yet) and this new overhaul, it sounds like I’m due for a second play-through! Sweet!
@Northern_munkey as I said, I was joking about it. But people have accepted overly intrusive macrotransactions (nothing micro about it), games sold in pieces with the actual ending is hiding in a DLC, pre-alpha releases mascarading as final versions that don't even work. We have been living in a gaming distopia for years and it might come to paid bug fixes one day. Or maybe all games will require a monthly fee on top of the 80+€/$/£ it costs.
I liked the hour or so that I played, but not enough to take my attention away from whatever I was playing at the time. I'll download again some time.
@Rhaoulos fair enough. I didn't pick up on the joking around bit to be honest. The state of gaming is quite bleak when it comes to the biggest names in publishing but somehow the smaller teams manage to knock their games and support out of the park without charging anything or little to nothing. Hexworks,arrowhead etc are all really good when it comes to this.
Might give this a replay after I finish The First Berserker, man its waring me down though, it's a fairly tough game, also no easy mode caster spec, full melee!!!!
@Bunchesopuppies nice casual spoiler
@AhmadSumadi Currently on sale for like 75% off
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy mostly harmless
@Northern_munkey What's your take on Hexworks dialing back the bleak imagery for the next installment? I saw they were making the next game more palatable for a wider audience. While I understand the business sentiment, I think they said this game has been played by over 4 million people, so it's not like they're hard up. I'm personally pretty bummed about it. I thought the super grim-dark, religious vibe was excellent (a la Blasphemous) and gave LotF a rather unique vibe in the genre. I worry if they dial it back too much, it will just make LotF disappear into the ocean of typical dark fantasy.
@wildcat_kickz I'd like them to keep the grim,dark eerie visuals but if it manages to keep the core gameplay as good then I'm OK with it. I'll try any souls type game. I really enjoyed code vein and that was very colourful so let's see what happens.
@Northern_munkey Yeah I totally respect that. For me, setting does a lot to keep me coming back, though gameplay is obviously very important too! I'm just a huge sucker for the thorny, borderline Catholic vibe of the game, so I'd be disappointed if they lost it.
That said, I'm probably gonna be there day 1, regardless 😁
@wildcat_kickz me too 🤣
Surprisingly, my absolute favorite souls game of this generation.
@whitejessegpfc yeah, I saw that when I got on the console. When I checked in the app I only saw the Deluxe Edition. I have a trial so I’m gonna try it out. Have my son to play coop with. Hopefully we like it.
For some reason I cannot update the game! It is currently on 1.7 and when I force an update, I have the latest version! Is the update available worldwide or is it being rolled out in regions?
With this update, I finally started a playthrough. This is a fantastic Soulslike and I'm happy I started playing with the best version of the game. If other studios keep putting out Soulslikes of this caliber, I will never need to pine for a Dark Souls 4.
@ParboldCoder It appears that in the PS5 menu, it still shows version 1.7 but in the game itself, it shows 2.0.
@wildcat_kickz @Coffeeglitch @Northern_munkey @Enuo
Just wanted to say, thanks for the responses, guys. I greatly appreciate it. I think I'll give it a try once it's a little cheaper to be on the safe side.
AI looks ace! I'll buy it as soon as it's on sale.
@naruball Very welcome! Hope you enjoy it whenever you pick it up.
@naruball no worries. I think you'll like it and relish the challenge.
