Dynasty Warriors Origins Trilogy

It's no secret that Dynasty Warriors: Origins has been a real success story for Koei Tecmo, putting the long-standing series back on the map after a rather dismal downfall.

As such, it's no huge surprise to hear that producer Tomohiko Sho is currently considering potential sequels. And yes, that's sequels plural, as the project lead wants to continue the Three Kingdoms storyline in the same kind of detail that Origins provides.

In a new interview with Famitsu — as translated by RPG Site — Sho is quite candid on the whole thing.

"If we were to make a sequel, I thought of making a duology where we would depict up until the Battle of Wuzhang Plains," he explains, pointing to a pivotal military clash that's been depicted as the final battle in numerous Dynasty Warriors titles up until now.

Origins itself only covers the Three Kingdoms plot to the Battle of Chi Bi — a relatively early but still incredibly important fixture, and so a sequel that continues the narrative was always on the cards.

But again, Sho suggests that one sequel might not be enough: "If we maintain [Origin's] density in the sequel, it would be impossible to depict up until the Battle of Wuzhang Plains (strained laugh)."

"That’s why in the middle of the development, I ended up thinking that we would have to make it into a trilogy."

Indeed, Origins delivers what is probably the most in-depth Three Kingdoms adaptation of any Dynasty Warriors title, really taking its time to properly establish the ins and outs of each kingdom's inner workings, and the relationships between their many characters.

So we get where Sho's coming from — it'll just be a case of whether Koei Tecmo greenlights the whole thing. Still, at least one sequel seems nailed on at this point — and that's on top of the Visions of Four Heroes DLC that's out this week on PS5.
