Every now and then, a big publisher will make a seemingly inexplicable decision that leaves onlookers in a state of disbelief — and this latest move from Capcom is right up there amongst the most baffling.
So, every year, Capcom hosts the Capcom Cup for the current iteration of Street Fighter. It takes the world's best players from the surrounding Capcom Pro Tour and places them into a tournament bracket. The winner usually walks away with a substantial cash prize.
Up until now, all of these Capcom Cup finals have been free to watch, streamed live on sites like YouTube and Twitch. Indeed, esports events in general are paid for by sponsorships and advertising deals, with the resulting shows being littered with ads in between matches, and constant product placements.

However, the upcoming Capcom Cup 12, which takes place in March next year, will be a pay-per-view event. In other words, you'll need to buy a 'ticket' to watch the finals live.
Virtual ticket prices go as high as 6,000 yen (roughly $40 / £30) for the full package.
Needless to say, Street Fighter fans are bemused. The overriding sentiment is that locking a fighting game event behind a paywall is incredibly shortsighted.
Although the reach of major events — like Evo, for example — has expanded over the years, many would argue that fighting games are still far too niche to demand a pay-per-view model.
So we're left wondering: why would Capcom risk damaging its reputation over something like this? Well, it's hard to escape the fact that Street Fighter 6 is massive in Japan.
The game's seriously struck a chord over there, and it's entirely possible that Capcom's simply set on monetising such a surge in popularity — global consequences be damned.
Numerous big names from the fighting game community, including both professional players and commentators, have spoken out against Capcom's supposed madness.
What do you make of this? Has Capcom lost the plot, or is this kind of move towards pay-per-view inevitable for esports? Drop your combo in the comments section below.

Lol I wouldn't watch it for free.
I'm fine with this. I mean, I won't be watching it, but hey, that just means I have more time to play SF6 instead.
If Capcom did this because they only want to pay maybe 50% of $1 million prize money then why not do the old CPT Premium Pass like they did with SF 5? The community can still donate to the prize money but in exchange they got in-game contents like stage, color, etc.
Or Capcom can ask people to watch it through SF 6 Battle Hub. There's a big screen in that hub that at first i thought they gonna used it to stream CPT tournaments and Capcom Cup.
But this? I'm baffled with this decision like WTF Capcom 🙄
They did it with SFL Japan and it did well for them because SF 6 is super popular in Japan. But they really stupid to think SF fans outside Japan gonna pay $30-40 just to watch a 3 days live stream of Capcom Cup matches.
This could damage SF 6 brand and interest in the long run. Less newcomers and even current players could stop supporting the game. Let's see if someone from the devs team gonna speak up and undo this bs...
Well, they’ve been locking characters behind a paywall for years now, so this tracks.
Who’s gonna pay money to watch this?
I enjoy watching competitive SF, but I would never pay to watch.
"with the resulting shows being littered with ads in between matches, and constant product placements"
If they are anything like a certain 'sports entertainment' company these days, don't worry, you wont lose any ads or product placement...
I wouldn't watch this rubbish even if they paid me haha
Capcom are surprisngly scummy for a company everyone loves
@MasterChiefWiggum The practice is not exclusives for Capcom fg's but also all fg's like Tekken, KoF, GG, etc.
But so far the only one who did this is Capcom and i fear others could follow.
Oh noooo...
Anyways...Ghost of Yotei release week is finally here!
I feel like this is a hard plateau for most people when it comes to entertaining eSports as an actual athletic contest. Capcom is trying to portray this as some massive fight night event and it just isn’t lol.
There's a reason the prices are quoted in yen on the announcement, these events have a large viewership in Japan, let alone however well they do internationally. To treat this as a small niche event that nobody cares about is a bizarre mindset 🤔 Nonetheless, this is not a good practice and will obviously alienate and discourage new viewers, especially outside of Japan. Hopefully the criticisms are heard...
Genuinely one of the most tone deaf, bone headed decisions that Capcom's e-sports division has ever made. Absolutely wild. I have always watched this event, but I will not be watching it this time around. This is Street Fighter x Tekken levels of Crapcom idiocy.
Insane that they're putting this behind a pay-per-view.
I hope they can come back to their senses and revert this decision. We can watch the final of the football World Cup for free but have to pay to stream Capcom’s Pro tour? C’mon!
I would rather pay for a CPT costume / stage package and contribute to the game that way.
I am guessing they are testing this to see how it goes down. If they do it again it will show that the people complaining are in the minority.
If they said $15 for the combo and the money goes to a cleaner experience with less ads, or a bigger money pot, I could see it making sense, but $40 for the full package is crazy.
That sucks. I love SF6. I love watching SF6 but I'm not paying $40 for a stream. That's just crazy.
If they're that desperate, how about putting it on patreon or onlyfans. Sheesh... You know these events are made to promote the game, right!?
AHAHAHA so this is what esports was hoping to become. I'm so happy that it never took off, what garbage! 😂
Wow, someone is gonna get fired soon
I wouldn't watch this even if they deposited the $40/£30 in my bank account 😅
@Rich33 man, I tuned into the last event WWE had for the first time in years. I had to laugh at all the ads all over the mat and ring.
Even some Japanese fans aren't happy about this. Not just they think the price is expensives but the decision could divided the community that Capcom already build since year 1.

No one with big time zone different with Japan gonna pay $40 but the tournament start at 2 AM in monday where people still sleep and in a couple of hours they need to wake up for work. Fking nuts.
@aj21009
In the words of monty python, "its all got very silly!"
They’ve jumped the gun here - I know people pay to watch golf, and that gives false hope, but e-sports benefits more from extending its reach rather than capitalising on its niche market.
Then again who knows, it IS a sport, maybe they’ll sell enough to make it worthwhile, and maybe it’ll in some strange way make it feel more an established event.
@Hyena_socks nope, it’s an “e-sport” ; sports is competition involving athletic abilities. you seriously gonna call these gamers , athletes? 🤣😂🤣😂
Ridiculous. Capcom makes great games but they try to f their fans with stuff like this
@nomither6 I’m not about to declare a thumb war on them!
@Americansamurai1 Its like streaming now TV is dying and now we get ads on streaming services. And why would put a paywall on a evrntt full off advertisement.
Where are the people crying Cashcom now if it was Sony well we know what would have happend
Ive never watched people play games outside of mk2 in arcades in the early 90s. Never saw the draw.
That said, I know esports are a big draw these days and they can drive revenue.
In this instance though, I font think sf6 has the global viewership to do a ppv event, even if the fee removed ads(which im guessing it doesnt) so really, your paying to watch ad filled niche content. Id be interested if they do an about face closer to the event when numbers come in on ticket sales
Not sumat I'd watch but bet it will be on a streaming site for free somewhere lol can watch basically anything else series movies without netflix etc etc so probs same for that
Baffling. This is like anti-advertising.
