Skate has been available in early access now for a couple of weeks or so, and soon it'll get its first major content update.
On 7th October, the free-to-play skateboarding title will enter Season 1, running until 2nd December. Here's a trailer that gives a brief look at what it entails:
The seasonal update will give San Vansterdam a makeover, adding new skateable areas and obstacles as well as a visual refresh.
There will also be a couple of events running, namely Skate-o-Ween — the game's spin on Halloween of course — and the 7-Ply Maple Harvest. These events will update community parks to match the theme, and there will be related cosmetics you can get with in-game Tix, earned by participating in the events.

Season 1 also adds 40 new challenges that'll rotate into the game on a weekly basis, and new Seasonal Tasks are being introduced — these are your daily, weekly, seasonal, and event objectives.
There's also the debut of the Skate Pass, which will have a free and a premium tier. These bring with them all sorts of fun rewards to earn, like new clothes, decks and so on.
On top of all that, the soundtrack is being refreshed with 21 new songs. These include:
- Bad Religion - Against The Grain
- Dinosaur Jr. - Freak Scene
- Gang Star - Full Clip
- Jane's Addiction - Stop!
- Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot
- Joey Bad4$$ - Pardon Me
- Ice Cube - Bop Gun (One Nation)
- Naughty By Nature - It's On
- Operation Ivy - Sound System
- Skegss - L.S.D (Live. Sleep. Die)
It's a fairly substantial update, then. Will you be checking out Season 1 of Skate? Roll into the comments section below.

Some decent additions in the music there 👍
I love the original Skate games and I was eagerly awaiting the new iteration. Like everyone, I was concerned by the free to play model, but having spent considerable time with the game, the fundamental problem is it lacks the soul of the original trilogy. No pro skaters, no bone breaking and an uninspiring world makes the whole experience feel void of any substance. What's frustrating is the skating itself retains much of what made the games so strong. I went back to Skate 3, which plays so well on series X and I haven't looked back.
Jeff Gerstmann described this game as a mall with no stores.
Such a corporate hollow game.
Damn, some really great music additions alone. I really like the gameplay of this one and the map’s pretty well designed. Having other skaters around in multiplayer is a game changer too, it’s been so much fun hitting a spot with randoms taking turns. We seriously need the Hall of Meat back though, bails are so much less fun than Skate 3.
I said something similar on a different site, but what a bummer that THIS is the return of Skate that we waited so long for.
Very rare that I post anywhere but I think the stick the game is getting in some quarters is rather harsh.
Yes it does lack some of the soul and humour of the original trilogy (which I played and loved back in the day) but for a free to play model I think it’s good. The Flick-It mechanic is present and correct and while the challenges can get a little stale there’s more than enough to do for me who dips in every so often and has already put in 20 plus hours since main release September.
I also think (whispers this) that the microtransactions are very inoffensive and not pushed hard as game currently stands which is very welcome. I’ve not spent a penny and more than happy with my cosmetics. EA could easily have messed this up by using pay to play on certain areas or events so kudos to them (not often I say that with EA).
Again this is still early access and I’m really hoping it’s embraced enough to keep it going as there’s a lot to like here and I get the impression a lot of feedback will be listened too. Yes they’re trying to please the Fortnite crowd too (shudders) but there still plenty to enjoy for us old school skate players in my view. Fingers crossed this one has legs and skates long term.
I've been playing this new version of Skate, and it's decent but it pales in comparison to the Skate 2 and Skate 3.
It just seems so bland, dull and lifeless. There's just no personality to the game and the art style is definitely a downgrade compared to the two earlier titles - both of whom are more than a decade old now.
I think the best part of this new Skate was seeing the snippets of the Intro Videos from Skate 2 and Skate 3 during the Introductory Sequence.
The gameplay is solid, but it's just such a downgrade when viewed in context of the rest of the series.
If you like to fall down a ton due to really wimpy ollie and nollie this is the game for you. No hall of meat. Boring city. Lots of bugs. Like Alpha level of bugs. Tons of cosmetics to spend real money on. I was really hoping that this game was going to be good. It isn't. Not as bad as SESSION but I only gave that game an hour so I have no clue if it gets better.
