Re: Gran Turismo 7 Was an Inspiration for Microsoft Flight Sim 2024's PSVR2 Mode, Coming Soon

Cockpit games tend to work best in VR!

I got MSFS24 at the beginning of the year and had a lot of fun with it, but the most cumbersome parts were definitely programming avionics. Curious to see how they handle it in VR - will it use eye-tracking so I can interact with the knob/switch I'm looking at?

Honestly even if the controls aren't perfect, I'm going to have a blast with this game in VR. Being able to look out the window at the clouds and really FEEL the distance to the ground or the size of mountains - VR gives you a sense of scale that's impossible to get from a flat TV screen.

Re: Opinion: If Sony's Doubling Down on Its Most Popular Franchises, Where's Uncharted?

charliecarrot

I don't necessarily need this specific IP or brand or characters to return, but I desperately want a similar game. A fun and lightheaded yet thrilling romp across the world, with lots of historical fiction and beautiful showpieces.

I don't really want to play The Last of Us because although it may not strictly be horror, that sorta stuff just stresses me out! It took a lot out of me to even get through that one part of Uncharted 1. I don't want to be scared, it's not fun for me.

I just finished Before Your Eyes on PSVR2. Really moving game with a super unique interface (it solely uses eye tracking to interact with things, no buttons). Made me cry, made me reconsider my life. Did what good art can do.

Kinda in deep with everything VR has to offer right now and I don't have a huge desire to play flat games at the moment. I'm sure the novelty will wear off at some point, but I'm all in right now.

Re: Video: Silence as PSVR2 Turns Three Years Old - Is Sony's PS5 Headset Dead?

charliecarrot

I just bought one a couple days ago with the $100 off sale they're having.

I mostly got it for GT7 to go along with my sim racing rig, but I've been blown away by the couple of other games I've tried already, and it seems to have a pretty sizable backlog! I picked up No Man's Sky, Hitman, Cities VR, Horizon, Synth Riders, and a couple others that were on sale, with other games wishlisted.

To me, it's fresh, new, and exciting, and there's a wealth of games available with more upcoming (MSFS '24 and fingers crossed American Truck Simulator pls). I understand how you could be disappointed if you picked it up on day one, especially with the lack of first party and AAA support, but it's already been more than worth the $300 for me so far. Even if I just used it for GT7, it would be worth it.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give God of War: Sons of Sparta?

charliecarrot

I've only played a few hours. It's tough when the core gameplay is fun but there's a lack of polish in so many other areas. Do you forgive the little mistakes because you enjoy the game? Or do you say, wait a minute, this isn't some indie game, and it's backed by a 1st party studio of one of the largest corporations in the world, so there's no excuses?

Re: Here's Why Shawn Layden Thinks Sony 'Can't Get Away' with Making PS6 Digital Only

charliecarrot

I like physical games because the act of going to the store to pick up a new release is fun. I always enjoy glancing at the gaming section of the supermarket to see what they got. Please god don't take away all my reasons to leave the house!

Also it's cool to have things on the shelf to look at and whatnot. It's like physical books vs ebooks - the physical item gives you something to display on the shelf, to talk about, to remember.

Re: Opinion: The Euphoric Reaction to PS6's Rumoured Delay Really Confuses Me

charliecarrot

I think the article writer here is out of touch.

The economy is *****, computer parts are way overpriced, the job market is the worst its been since the 2008 financial crisis. Who will benefit from a new console? All it will do is create FOMO and cause people to buy it for an incremental upgrade that wouldn't be worth it - or alternatively, people WON'T buy it and it would be a huge disappointment and possibly put Sony in a bad situation.

Most importantly, game development times are longer than they've ever been. Raising the bar for what's expected for a console game will only exacerbate that. Devs haven't even reached the potential of what's possible on PS5 yet.

Not to mention how well the PS5 has been selling recently. Lots of new owners - why would these people want a new console to be released right after they just picked up this one? I'm sure it's great for game news/review websites, but no one I know in real life is ready for a PS6.

Edit: Starting to think this article is just engagement bait after reading through the comments. Lots of incendiary language in the article which is clearly unpopular and riles people up.

Re: 'It's a Terrible First-Party Game': God of War Creator Expands on PS5 Side-Scroller Criticism

charliecarrot

The UI is actually horrible and I hope reviewers make note of that in their reviews.

The menu is hard to read, hard to understand. The map is badly designed. If you place a marker in the map tile you're on, your character indicator covers it up, so you can't even tell if you placed it correctly.

As a more minor point, lots of elements in the menus have inconsistent padding for no good reason. Compare your health/stamina/etc bars on the first page of the menu to the second page. They also look like cookie cutter progress bars straight out of some default library.

As far as UX, there's a number of screens with lists on the left and displayed content on the right, like bestiaries. Sometimes when you scroll down the list, it changes the content showing on the right. Sometimes it doesn't and you have to press X to select an item in the list before it displays on the right. There's no rhyme or reason as to when.

To me, the menus reek of either "good enough" prototype that made it to release, or some last minute crap they threw together. There's a clear lack of polish in the UI, no matter how much you like the game itself.

Re: Hands On: God of War: Sons of Sparta Shows Real Promise with Lovely Pixel Art and Punchy Combat

charliecarrot

Nah, the pixel art is definitely not the best. Looks a bit generic. I love games like Celeste, Stardew Valley, Cave Story, and VVVVVV, so it's not an anti-pixel art bias on my part - I really just don't think it looks very good.

If I saw a game with this art style under a different title, I'd overlook it in a heartbeat. Because it's God of War though, I paid a bit more attention to the gameplay and it seems fun. I just wish there was a bit more character or style to the art.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 619

I picked up Gran Turismo 7, my first Gran Turismo game. I'm really loving the vibe, with the chill cafe full of car nerds geeking out, and the jazzy and classical menu music. It has a very different feel overall compared to any other racing games I've played (FH5, Dirt 5, Dirt Rally 2, WRC games).

Those other games also tend to be overwhelming, either throwing 100 flashy things at you all at once or just dropping you in and expecting you to figure it out. GT7 eases you in really well, especially as a newcomer.

I'm not even a car guy and I've never watched any motorsports, but I'm really liking all these personalities gushing about what makes XYZ car special, and I enjoy reading the histories in the museum area. It's kinda like when you have a friend who's really passionate about something, you can appreciate the passion even if you don't necessarily care about the specific topic very much. That's how I feel with this game: the creators are clearly passionate about cars.

Re: Astro Bot (PS5) - One of the Greatest PlayStation Platformers of All Time

charliecarrot

I finally got around to playing this in the past week, and I just gotta say, I fully understand all the high ratings and GOTY wins. This game is fully deserving of all the praise.

I'm a big Mario fan, and I can honestly say that in my opinion, Astro Bot beats all the 3D Marios. I think it's the best 3D platformer / collectathon ever made. They perfected the genre.

Re: Maybe There Is Still Hope for the Final Fantasy 13 Trilogy on PS5, After All

charliecarrot

@MrStark Sometimes, when telling a good story, characters have flaws. This is similar to real life, where humans sometimes behave emotionally and irrationally. Just because someone is the protagonist of a story, that doesn't mean everything they do is good and represents behavior worth modeling.

If you're saying the reaction was unjustified from a story perspective based on the history of the characters, I simply disagree. Maybe it's the non-linear storytelling, but if you lay out the events in order leading up to the times Lightning assaults Snow, I'd argue there's ample justification.

Re: Maybe There Is Still Hope for the Final Fantasy 13 Trilogy on PS5, After All

I was a late adopter to the PS3. When FFXIII was announced, I knew that would be the moment to go for it. I ordered and received the game before I even had my PS3 (120gb slim). Once I got my console, I stayed up all night until 7am the next morning playing this game.

There's always ebbs and flows with popular opinion around these games. Many of the more controversial releases tend to be viewed in a more positive light once a new, more controversial release comes out. It's just the nature of a series that constantly tries new things.

A lot of the criticisms of FFXIII are accurate (except imo for the ones about story being confusing or requiring hours reading datalog entries - just pay attention and be ok not fully understanding everything at the beginning and you'll pick up on it), but I don't think that makes it a bad game. Its focus is story, characters, spectacle, and a fast-paced, turn-based combat system. It's not about exploration and has little in the way of side content. Don't expect it to be something it's not, and you'll have a good time.

Not long ago, I dusted off my PS3 and have this game a go again. It holds up remarkably well - all it needs is a little resolution bump and it will outshine many other JRPGs released in the last decade. I hope we do get a trilogy remaster, and I'll pick it up day one if that happens.
