Re: Astro Bot (PS5) - One of the Greatest PlayStation Platformers of All Time

I finally got around to playing this in the past week, and I just gotta say, I fully understand all the high ratings and GOTY wins. This game is fully deserving of all the praise.

I'm a big Mario fan, and I can honestly say that in my opinion, Astro Bot beats all the 3D Marios. I think it's the best 3D platformer / collectathon ever made. They perfected the genre.

@MrStark Sometimes, when telling a good story, characters have flaws. This is similar to real life, where humans sometimes behave emotionally and irrationally. Just because someone is the protagonist of a story, that doesn't mean everything they do is good and represents behavior worth modeling.

If you're saying the reaction was unjustified from a story perspective based on the history of the characters, I simply disagree. Maybe it's the non-linear storytelling, but if you lay out the events in order leading up to the times Lightning assaults Snow, I'd argue there's ample justification.

I was a late adopter to the PS3. When FFXIII was announced, I knew that would be the moment to go for it. I ordered and received the game before I even had my PS3 (120gb slim). Once I got my console, I stayed up all night until 7am the next morning playing this game.

There's always ebbs and flows with popular opinion around these games. Many of the more controversial releases tend to be viewed in a more positive light once a new, more controversial release comes out. It's just the nature of a series that constantly tries new things.

A lot of the criticisms of FFXIII are accurate (except imo for the ones about story being confusing or requiring hours reading datalog entries - just pay attention and be ok not fully understanding everything at the beginning and you'll pick up on it), but I don't think that makes it a bad game. Its focus is story, characters, spectacle, and a fast-paced, turn-based combat system. It's not about exploration and has little in the way of side content. Don't expect it to be something it's not, and you'll have a good time.

Not long ago, I dusted off my PS3 and have this game a go again. It holds up remarkably well - all it needs is a little resolution bump and it will outshine many other JRPGs released in the last decade. I hope we do get a trilogy remaster, and I'll pick it up day one if that happens.

All the boost settings in the FF pixel remasters are the only way I got through those games today. I'm glad I got to experience them, even if I had 4x exp and 4x gil on the whole time.

It's a bit different when talking about new releases vs relatively archaic NES games, but I'm still all for options that makes things easier. It increases accessibility, and I want as many people as possible to be able to play through these amazing worlds and stories.

I've been on a Final Fantasy kick, so I've been playing FFXIV for the first time alongside making my way through the Pixel Remaster games.

FFXIV is pretty good as someone who's never played an MMO before. It really captures a classic Final Fantasy feel more so than any other mainline since IX, while still being something that stands apart from the other titles.

I just got platinum in FF1 (first ever platinum), so working on FF2 now! I didn't like the look of the pixel remasters from screenshots I saw, but if you actually play it (and use the pixel font), it actually has a super appealing aesthetic. Highly recommend.
