For my tastes and the games that I like to play, it wasn't special at all. Two solid games that enjoyed, but won't ever go back to - BG3 and ToTK, and that's about it.
For me, over the last 20 years, it would rank in the bottom five.
I've played every mainline AC game shortly after release, but I'm absolutely not excited for this one. Going away from the RPG style, which was the best thing they ever did, is a huge gut punch for me. I'll eventually buy it on clearance or play it on PS+ sometime later on.
@Ravix He's supposed to be able to see 40 feet, but I don't know if that's happening. I've never played anything from this studio before and its a big adjustment. But I'm hungry for AAA party based RPGs, and pickings are ultra slim these days.
I just finished Act 2, and I give it a 7 so far. There are good things to be found, but the UI is a huge pain to deal with, and there are technical issues relating to actually being able to see what's going on any time the characters are away from sunlight. There are LARGE sections where even doing everything possible with the settings on the game, the PS5 and my TV, I'm still not able to see much of what's happening unless my character is actively holding a torch instead of a weapon, and then I only see what's right next to them, and its still blurry. Its made it a much bigger chore than most other games.
I'm going to wait a few months, see what everyone has to say about how it runs on the PS5, and hopefully get a few more patches and updates. Then we'll see.
Its the first month in a while that neither I nor my kids are interested in a single one of the game. Unfortunate, but you'll have that from time to time. Its been a good run up to this point the last six months or so.
For 17 years, the BEEP has haunted and taunted me, always snitching on me when I'm trying to game and my wife is doing something else or sleeping. Waking up our kids when they were babies, or just being loud and annoying in general.
@sanderson72 The game is still fun like it always was. I rarely played online. The big difference now is that there's a massive reduction in the number of items that you can use your winnings to purchase, like clothes and accessories. Before, these changed and cycled through a lot, and you'd get a new set every month. Now, its basically just the luck of the draw for what you earn for winning.
IMO, this is easily the best month so far on the service, after launch. Ratchet & Clank marks the third big game added this year shortly after I bought it (along with Sackboy and Kena), but that's OK. There are a big pile of games on this list that I've wanted to at least try out but haven't/wouldn't have bought. Usually if there are two, I feel really good, but this time there are about 9 or 10.
OK, so sell me ES6 and Starfield for my PS5, if you're OK with me not buying an Xbox. I'd be delighted to pay you for both and probably all of the expansion packs to follow.
I really, REALLY liked the fact that Aloy would talk out loud to guide the player through the puzzles. I found it to be both a big help and just something in general that was pleasant and I liked. I wish that more games featured things like this. As someone who talks to myself out loud to solve things, it was normal and comfortable.
Zero Dawn and Forbidden West are both among my favorite games. They're exceptionally beautiful and the control over Aloy is fantastic. I absolutely have my fingers crossed that we'll be able to see this engine used in a wide variety of other open world games in different settings. I doubt I'll ever get tired of the format, just keep it fresh with new stories and characters.
@ItsBritneyB_tch Horizon is, likely, a MUCH bigger game though. The previous Jedi game was barely a 30 hour experience, without a lot of interaction with other characters. I enjoyed it, but it was pretty bare bones. I guess we'll see what this one offers.
After playing every single mainline offline game as they were released, I was already out on this before I saw this trailer, but if there needed to be a final nail in the coffin, the demonstration of the combat was certainly it.
If Square is just out on making party-based RPGs with slower paced combat, that's their choice. But I really hope that someone else picks up the genre and moves forward with it. Its been my main thing for over 30 years, and I'm afraid that its dying. I just can't do the button mashing super fast combat, and it holds no appeal to me.
The game is honestly so short with so little to do that I probably wouldn't play it again even if the upgrade were both totally free and worked flawlessly.
FF 12 is my favorite game in the series for a variety of reasons, but among them is the battle system, which is absolutely the best in the series, and one of the very best in any party based game ever, IMO. Its really the framework that I'd love to see any other games follow, if possible.
"Living under a rock", eh? LOL, I read online almost every day about video games and I'd never heard of it until just now. But I only look at Playstation stuff, and from the looks of it, it doesn't look like anything I'd ever have any interest in.
I haven't played an EA golf game since the early days of the PS3, but I'll keep an eye on it. I enjoyed the series for a while back then. It feels weird that today's golf games seem to offer less depth and unlockables than they did 15-20 years ago, but I guess that's par for most sports games anymore. The focus isn't on the single player, offline experience, but that's all that I care about.
I'm honestly depressed. I've played the series since the very start. 13 and 15 changed from my ideal format, and this one has stripped the game of just about everything that I like it seems. I'm worried that the slow paced, party rpg is all but dead. This is not the game that I want.
Combine that with the news about Dragon Age Dreadwolf, and it's been a rough month.
@SJBUK I honestly struggle badly in the very fast cars. And I don't even attempt to drive the ones at the very top end. Its just too fast for me to control. The high performance street cars are really my max end, and I've been playing the series since the very start.
@SJBUK As someone with a huge interest in the common, regular cars and a minimal one with the supercars, I'd much rather they shift the focus to the old ways of having many more ones you'd see on the street and be able to actually drive yourself. Especially if its easier to do.
I wonder if this average is different if you take out the extreme supercars that they have. Does a regular Honda Civic take just as long, or are the low end cars a quicker process?
@OneWingedAngel No doubt. I remember reading an interview with one of the main writers at Bioware at the time a few months after DAI came out, where they had all of the outlines and planning ready to make games 4-7 in the series. They had a plan, and then just needed to execute the details and the technical side of it. Really, games 4 and 5 should have been PS4 titles without question. They could have used the engine that they already had and just built upon it.
But EA continuously gets in the way and tries to force the games to be online/live service/microtransation machines, and they've built and scrapped the game at least three times over before getting to where we are today, as you said, 8 years later. Its a damn shame.
But what's even worse, almost no other studios have even attempted to pick up where Bioware left off with DAI and make a similar game themselves. Greedfall is basically it. The big budget, AAA party based RPG peaked with Inquisition, and here we are nearly a decade later still waiting for the next step in the genre's evolution.
Hopefully back to more of the old ways, with a lot more "real cars" that you can buy and upgrade, and fewer supercars. What I'd love is something more along the lines of GT3 or 4 with today's graphics and gameplay, and a huge roster of cars that most people actually see on the road IRL.
I've put about 50 hours into it on the PS5, and have had absolutely zero issues playing on performance mode. Loads fast, plays fast. Exactly what I would have hoped for.
I hadn't played the game since the DLC came out roughly six years ago, and that was on a standard PS4. There were a few bugs that time around, but not bad. I had a TON of issues with the game at the innitial launch, but CDPR seemed to work hard to solve those.
Mass Effect 2 and three and the entire Dragon Age series are fantastic. Unfortunately, Bioware has been in hibernation for a long time now, in large part forced by their EA overlords per many reports. Hopefully they can come out of it and Dreadwolf and the next ME game will be as good or better than the old ones.
Its been a really bleak time for party based RPGs all around, sadly. They're my main genre, so all I can do is hold out hope.
I bought Kena at that price about a month ago. Its worth it, but its also the shortest game I've played in many years (only about 15 hours taking it slowly and carefully)
That's a tremendous value for Fenyx, which is a much, much bigger game and a lot of fun. It was a lighthearted, but very full 100+ hour experience for me. Like an anime version of AC Odyssey in some ways.
Nothing that interests me at all. At least with the previous few months, there were games that I already owned or played that I thought were good, but nothing on this list has ever interested me in the least.
I have a PS5 with a disc drive already, and I will always want to buy a system that has one built in. The only way I could see a use for this would be if I were somehow forced to buy a digital only version as my only option, but even then its absolutely not preferable.
I guess we'll see what happens with these guys. For most of XBOX's history, Forza is one of the only franchises I've ever been jealous that I don't get to play as a Sony guy.
After playing the Forsaken demo, I quickly realized that the game isn't for me at all, so I'm not interested in any of the games coming out this month. I'll keep my eyes open for deals on other games already out that I don't have.
For me, full games that will likely release in 2023, my top four are easily:
Hogwarts
Jedi
AC Mirage
Octopath Traveler 2
Still watching FF16. I've been into the series since the very start, but I want a party based, long form, semi open world RPG, and I have no idea what this game really even is, but I really worry that its a dark, fast paced action game with a story on rails, and if thats the case then I'm out for many reasons.
I haven't played the game yet, but she did a really great job as Penny in Lost in Space, so it was fun to learn that she's getting into video game voice acting as well.

My wife and I watch a lot more shows on Disney+.
Wow, I guess I've just been lucky. I have three smart TVs that my family uses to watch streaming programs all the time, and I've never had a problem. Netflix, Disney+, Prime, Youtube, etc. I watch MLB games through the app that way too, and NFL games on Prime.
One I know I bought back in 2014, because I bought it on the same transaction where I got my PS4. And one I got in 2018 because I got it when I moved.
Is there a reason that people stream things through the PS5, rather than just using an app through their smart TV? Doesn't the extra step potentially slow everything down and lead to more issues?

No. I don't do horror, and there's nothing at all about the series that has ever made it look appealing to me.
