God of War Ragnarok's free DLC is out now on PS5 and PS4. Adding a whole new component to Kratos' Game of the Year-worthy epic, Valhalla tasks players with battling through an increasingly dangerous gauntlet of opponents in roguelike fashion. For some, 'roguelike' is without a doubt a dirty term, but this expansion promises a personal journey for our favourite bald Spartan, as the grizzled warrior comes to terms with his past (and what might await him in his future).
And of course, it helps that Valhalla won't cost you a penny if you own the base game. Sony Santa Monica Studio is calling the DLC a thank-you gift for fans, and we're sure its release will tempt a lot of players back to the outstanding PlayStation exclusive.
But will you be returning to Ragnarok for the arrival of Valhalla? Have your say in our poll, and then recall your axe in the comments section below.

Yes, and it seems brilliant. Seems fairly comparable to the Returnal free DLC which was actually really substantial.
I’m too addicted to Battle Chef Brigade currently, but maybe some day.
I am absolutely loving it and yes, it seems that rare story driven, big budget roguelike experience we had with Returnal (🫶🏻) but fairly easier.
I just got past the first couple of bosses and the story bits are intriguing 🧐
I've never touched even a single GOW game. Not changing that now. Hope everyone enjoys it, but it's just not my cup of tea.
I lost again.
KRATOS: Be better!
ME: I failed again.
I’ve not finished the first DLC Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok yet.
All these Valhalla Ragnarok games make me think the Vikings need to create some more mythology.
Nope. I sold the game after I finished it.
Zero replay value for me, and I won't be back for any expansions. Had enough of this version of God of War.
Loved the game (got the platinum) but I’m not interested in this one bit. I might try it in a few years if I do a full replay.
Just started NG+ was saving it for DLC.
Me: Where is this dlc?
Kratos: In the direction of dlc's!
I must be the only person in the world who thinks Kratos just sounds too silly to take seriously. It makes me crack up every time he opens his mouth with that pompous voice. I get it, you're a god.
Fun game, though. I didn't need a sequel.
I feel off Ragnarock. Replaying Cyberpunk PS5 and DLC before the blitz of huge JRPGs in 2024
I need to buy the base game first
Was about to get stuck in then realised I've somehow re-downloaded the PS4 version of Ragnarok. What a chump.
Currently playing Cyberpunk
Nope. The reboot holds no appeal to me. Hopefully they remake the older games at some point. Happy playing Resi 4 VR, FFXVI, and waiting for Infinite Wealth.
It’ll come to extra at some point, I’ll wait.
It's a nice Christmas present in my case.
I am planning to play Ragnarok during Christmas. Dlc is a bonus.
Just started it a few minutes ago. I forgot how bloody fun the combat is.
Definitely doing a NG+ run after this.
Gonna play at some point tomorrow. I platinumed Ragnarok so I am looking forward to going back to this world and gaining those new trophies too.
I'll try it at some point but I'm not in a rush to do so. Maybe after I finish Trails into Reverie and the FF16 dlc. Happy to see it's focused on Kratos though.
I likely won't go back to Ragnarok to play the DLC but it looks pretty good.
Not a fan of rougelikes / rougelites so I’ll pass. But it’s pretty cool it exists and I’m glad it’s good!
Don't like roguelikes, I'm just playing it to see the bit of story they put in it, but this mode is not that good.
Right now no as its a 80gb+ download and i don't really have the space free for DLC what from the sounds of things isn't that exciting.
I'm playing something far better, a certain game from Larian Studios.
I don't get why you are all making a big fuss over size, just stream (if you can, writing this in case you all shout at me), but if have decent internet speed, you don't have to worry about space, and can just try out the new dlc, if you like it download the full game, if you don't, well, no space wasted.
Found Ragnarok really boring but this actually looks very fun to play, plus there's various references to the Greek mythology which I miss dearly!
@PinderSchloss It's the same as saying Morgan Freeman has boring voice. The first time I heard this man use his voice to unleash his rage I was sold 😁
@ShogunRok The really need to make that more easy/obvious to download the right version of the game. I hope I used the right terms to explain it.
It's great, a lot of content.
For anyone wondering if there's story to this...there is absolutely story.
@ShogunRok if only there was a smarter delivery for that, call it smart delivery.
Just finished Spider-man 2!!
Sorry Kratos but it's now Alan Wake's turn.
I started GOW shortly after I finished my final playthrough of Horizon Forbidden West. For whatever reason I couldn't get into GOW. I played it for about 5 or 6 hours but gave up. It was a fine game, I just wasn't feeling it. Part of me wants to go back, but I have other things calling.
@AdamNovice yeah I've only done an hour or so but there is already more to it than I thought. Just unlocked the 'new rage' which was great.
Unfortunately I've already had a Youtube thumbnail spoil the end so I immediately blocked that channel. Still, I forgot how pleasurable the combat was, even if it's taking a while to get back into the swing of it.
I found the new GoW games to feel “on rails” and I can’t really articulate why…
Just not for me, I guess. I’m glad people are enjoying them though!
Nope. Really enjoyed the main game, but "Rouge like" is an instant disqualifier for me.
Hope others enjoy it though.
@AdamNovice Thanks for answering the question I was going to ask!
I may have to give this a look, now. It will have to wait until I finish The Final Draft on Alan Wake 2, though.
Oh yeahh.kratos the g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑.word up son
@BearsEatBeets Yeah I've the same thing happen too.
I still haven’t beat Ragnarok, I’m about 20 hours in!
I’ve heard Valhalla is an excellent piece of DLC though, with much more story segments than originally anticipated. This has me even more eager to play it after beating the main campaign.
It's so so good! Happy to be back in this world!
I should really replay this as I just ploughed through the story and the platinum looks as though its achievable for me.@Flaming_Kaiser how much easier could it be? As soon as you hit download it goes to a high contrast background with 2 options download ps5 version or download ps4 version.
Sold my copy after getting the plat. I dont plan to buy it again despite loving it.
Surprisingly enjoyable (since it's rouge like). It's definitely meaty and beautiful looking. Lots of work and love has gone into this one no doubt.
Big no from me. I got bored of the game after being fed up playing as whinging Atreus. First game was better in my opinion but I’m sure I’m in the minority.
Still less than half way through the main game a year on. The older I get, the worse my gaming ADHD gets!
Yeah, no. Not a fan of DLCs in general, free or not. Zero desire to return for this.
Not really given it much thought. The update isn't story based, so I don't see the point in playing it, myself.
I will, of course, check it out at some point.
@Steel76 same I enjoyed the first but I really struggled with Ragnarok. Much prefer the originals though
@Haggis555 I feel the same
@Toot1st
Yeah, I replayed the original PS2 games, many times. Tried to replay the reboot, but got bored after a few hours. Too much cinematics and slow boring parts. The cinematics in the old games, were short and never interupted the gameplay, in the same way. Plus the platforming etc was more fun. The action was fast and furious.
Also, I don't like what Kratos have become now.
Too much drama.
Played it for two hours now and loving it so far. Theres a decent amount of story and a couple of nice surprises so far. And it feels like ive only just started.
The 2016 reboot made me enjoy more the classics and I don't intend to touch it again. I have not planned playing sooner or later Ragnarok; instead I'll play all five originals in japanese since Kratos sounds so badass.
Not yet, still finishing up a few things including the excellent Chained Echoes. But will play it soon.
I love GoW but it's not enough for me to go back to it. Waiting for the next game. Also I just much prefer old Kratos, seemed so much more ruthless
Waiting on the main game to come to PS+ eventually.
Currently stuck with finishing another game, but the Valhalla update is next in line. If all goes according to plan, I'll start it today.
@ShogunRok if I downloaded (gowR) on PS4 you know the (psplus premium) 2hr demo can I download and play this dlc?.
Not unless they eventually let us download it as it's own separate application. I'm not downloading and installing that whole game again for a roguelike mode.
I don't own the base game yet so...
@Sloane That's a very good question, I'm not 100% sure, but technically, you should be able to. The trials are just time-limited versions of the full game, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
It is worth mentioning that Valhalla spoils the main game's story, though.
It's a shame so many people are dismissing it after hearing the term roguelike because these are the most gentle roguelike mechanics I have ever seen. It's almost like a linear game with procedural generated levels.
I bought the PS5 early this year and i am busy playing many games that is in my wishlist.
2024 is going to be my DLC year goal, So which DLCs i will play.
-Ghost of tsushima
-Doom eternal
-Horizon forbidden west
-Gow valhalla
-Cyberpunk phantom liberty
-Infamous second son dlc
-Cuphead dlc
-Tmnt Shredder revenge DLC
-Terminator resistance DLC
-Rift breaker DLC
@R-Soub
I would highly recommend IKKI island for GOT its incredible
I cant comment of Horizon or GOW yet as I havent finished the main story on either
Infamous First Light is brilliant
Cyberpunk DLC has had great reviews from my friends I am yet to finish the main story on that game.
I would also recommend the PS5 version of The Witcher 3
Cuphead is good fun but stupidly hard
@Ypmud Nice, Witcher 3 DLCs i finished them on PS4 3 years ago, Because of timing i can't play it again on PS5 upgrade, I have sooooo many games to play and no enough timing to play.
2024 i have so much stuff i want to play, I am focusing on DLCs and Retro PS1, PS2 , PS3 and PSVR games
Started yesterday, and it's AMAZING!! Not only in a gameplay aspect, but in the story department as well! It presents lots of tidbits about the lore, the state of the characters. I already beaten 3 bosses, only stopped to sleep. It's very worthwile for GOW fans!!
@Northern_munkey Then it's quite strange I hear a lot of people make the mistake but if you say so it sounds quite easy.
@R-Soub
The DLC of Ghost of Thushima is fantastic get it as fast as you can. Infamous First Light is fantastic i loved the main character. I would go as far to say she is better then the main character from the full game.
@Flaming_Kaiser I have all those DLCs but all of them is for next year the year or DLCs
@R-Soub Infamous and GoT are fantastic I loved them both and Infamous gets a special place because it was short, fun even for getting the trophies.
@Flaming_Kaiser fair enough comment but it's pretty clear to me and I don't find it difficult to download the correct version. Maybe I just pay attention to what I'm doing more.
@Northern_munkey I heard a lot of people talk about it but I see you point and it's a totally valid one. I have not used it myself as I don't have a game where it's used.
