That might be the most impressive global illumination I’ve ever seen in a game. Curious if they’re doing this in UE5 with Lumen, or if they’ve rolled their own lighting solution.
@AdamNovice Hard agree. The grimdark was a little over the top, but a morally-gray anti-hero was just a better fit than a group of fun-loving, meme-fueled culture jammers that occasionally 3D-print assault rifles.
Interesting to see how many others here share my experience of not initially liking Witcher 3 at all. I made it through White Orchard and almost gave up during “Wandering in the Dark” as I had somehow ended up under-leveled for it.
But then I ditched the dungeon, did a few Witcher contracts, and started the Bloody Baron quest chain… Within about an hour of gameplay, the game had gone from something I just couldn’t understand the hype for to one of my favorite games in recent memory.
Everything just came together at that point: the game’s universe, the mechanics, and the characters and story. That would be my advice to anyone playing The Witcher 3 for the first time: Try to stick it out to The Bloody Baron, and you will be rewarded with one of the defining gaming experiences of the past generation.
I wonder what there really is to enhance in W3 for PS5. It's a lovely-looking game as-is. Sure, a theoretical W4 in a few years could look meaningfully better as a built-from-the-ground-up PS5/XSX/RTX game, but in terms of retrofits, I'm not sure what they could do.
Maybe some raytraced bounce lighting for indoor / shadowed scenes?
Don't know what the status is in Europe, but it looks like SCEA's content delivery network is still catching up here in North America. Seven minutes after the hour and it's still just Ratchet & Clank.
Ever since the original PSVR, I’ve always thought the next one ought to use USB-C as the protocol is capable of transmitting both video and USB over the same cable. The USB-C port on the front of the PS5 gave me hope... so it’s awesome to see that they have indeed committed to a single-cable solution for PSVR2.
The PS5’s 3D audio system also does what the breakout box did, so it really should just be a single cable straight from headset to console.
@NEStalgia I have many opinions about Deus Ex (as one might guess from my avatar) but I kind of feel like it’s time for a new studio to get the IP. Mankind Divided was a solid entry in the series, but the formula was starting to show its age.
I want to see a studio make an immersive sim that feels as fresh as the original Deus Ex did two decades ago.
Surprised Marrakesh and Santa Fortuna aren't polling higher. Marrakesh's "international incident" setting complete with realistically-dense, Glacier-powered crowds of protestors is just so delightfully tense, and Santa Fortuna's narco kingpin compound is among the most satisfying of fortresses to infiltrate and stalk your target.
I finally saw one in person, and have revised my critique of the industrial design from “awful, would never want in my home“ to “just make it all black and it’ll be fine”
And actually, seeing it in person also changed my opinion on all-black: Not all black, but dark gray and black. 👌
Definitely not shy about their inspirations, this studio. Honestly, all the details, down to the drum-n-bass soundtrack, almost feel like going a bit too far toward cloning versus “spiritual successor“.
I think what rubs me the wrong way about this is the graphic design, which veers between poor Designers Republic knockoff and a sort of bland pastiche that looks out of place with the rest of it. The harder you try to be exactly Wipeout, the more the things you get wrong stand out.
@Matroska Switch ports are exactly the comparison I was thinking of. There's no reason they couldn't have targeted PS5 from the outset, then had a separate team figure out how to make it all happen on PS4.
I don't think HFW on PS5 will be compromised at all due to the PS4 release – if anything, I'd be worried that the PS4 could get a substandard port.
Still really disappointed that Sony went this direction for the new generation while Microsoft went the other direction.
I have no intention of ever buying an Xbox, but this is the first time Microsoft has had a more sophisticated industrial design than Sony. Both the Series X and S look like they'd go well in an upscale, minimalist living room. Meanwhile, the PS5 looks like it was meant to look good in a dorm room next to a bunch of anime figurines and Funko Pops.
As a grown-ass adult who cares how his living space looks, however, I currently have no intention of bringing that tacky thing into my home. I really wanted to get a launch PS5, but I’m going to have to wait for the slim at this rate.
What made the PS4 series’ design language great was that form followed function. The cut through the center isn’t just for looks; it’s to hold the disc slot and USB ports. The wedge angle may look cool, but it makes it easier to access the disc and ports when the console is sitting horizontally. There’s nothing there that doesn’t need to be there.
The PS5, however, is the exact opposite. Curved sides? Just for looks. Wider at one end than at the other? Just for looks. Ungainly superimposition of an asymmetrical curve onto an otherwise symmetrical design? Oh, that part actually does serve a purpose, for the disc slot that appears to have been an afterthought.
That’s the difference here, that the functional parts feel like an afterthought rather than an integral part of the design.
@glassmusic I hadn't even stopped to consider that there wouldn't be, but that would explain the departure from the LBP banner. I was wondering how they had improved the editor to enable creating full-3D levels, but... maybe there is in fact no editor.
I'm hoping the design language gets toned down for the rev.2 units sometime in 2021, because I really don't want to have to wait until the compact version redesign or the PS5 Pro to not have this wavy concept car parked under my TV.
I was worried that after the beautifully minimalist geometry of the PS4, Sony would pull a PS3 and go for gaudy curves again... and they outdid my worst fears with this monstrosity.
Like, this industrial design actually looks so over-the-top bad that it dampened my interest in Horizon Forbidden West.
The way to tell whether this is the previously-unveiled, black-and-white DualSense or a new all-black version is to look for a border between white and black plastic. Go to 0:07 in the video: You can see what has previously been white plastic (touchpad) against what has previously been black plastic (speaker grille). They sure look the same color to me!
While I’m sure CDPR will put out a good-looking game on PS4, I’m ready to treat Cyberpunk as a PS5 launch title. Even if they haven’t announced it, there’s no doubt in my mind this will be a cross-gen release.
I hate to be that guy, but this backstory is not a great representation of mental health issues. The character is suicidal, and being reanimated as a cyborg just fixes everything?
@rjejr I like the idea of tipping, but I think the barrier of making a PSN store purchase each time is still likely to be too high for most players.
Here’s my proposal: MM should offer a “support your favorite dreamers” subscription. Something like $5/month would position it well against Apple Arcade. If you’re a subscriber, your $5 is simply divided among all your likes for that month (minus platform costs). It would be super low friction for players, while still offering a real incentive for creators to build great content.
So glad that you guys did this series, and I love that I saw the headline for #1 and instantly thought "well, of course."
I don't know if Kojima has ever mentioned Journey, but I actually think there's a bit of its imprint in Death Stranding. In those moments where you climb down a lonely rock face to a moody Low Roar track on a rope left by a helpful stranger you'll never meet, it definitely feels like there's a connection.
Call me crazy, but I think right stick + gyro could be precise enough to put PlayStation and PC FPS players on the same servers. It’s the only console input scheme I would consider to be in the same league as mouse and keyboard!

Re: Sony Confirms PS5 Media Apps, Explains Dedicated Entertainment Space

These buttons are always paid placement. Disney, Netflix, Spotify, and Google paid Sony to be featured on the hardware.
