Re: Belgium Reckons Loot Boxes Are Gambling, Wants Them Banned in Europe

@kyleforrester87
Yes, I agree, but then again a zealot will always use every trick, justification or straw man agument in the book to get the result they want, ends justifies means and all that.

I dont have a problem with them as a concept but EA seemingly solely existing now to pump out 5 or 6/10 skinner boxes using freemium mechanics at premium prices are bad for us as gamers if we just keep lapping them up and giving them money hand over fist.

Equally, gamers that always want 100's of hours of gameplay for less than £50 and throw their toys out their pram at the thought of anything less, and then moan when games are stuffed with pointless radiant fetch and return quests and grind are just as bad.

There's a nice creamy middle which i try and exist in

Re: Belgium Reckons Loot Boxes Are Gambling, Wants Them Banned in Europe

RPE83

@kyleforrester87
Either way, It's gambling by definition;

"Gambling is the wagering of money or something of value (referred to as "the stakes") on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning money or material goods. Gambling thus requires three elements be present: consideration, chance and prize."

I don't hate microtransactions, for example, The Batman skins that had no effect on the game mechanics and design were fine and I bought several for amusement.

I am most concerned however, when games are by design becoming nothing but skinner boxes and all the fun is in gambling for buffs against other players.

Re: Belgium Reckons Loot Boxes Are Gambling, Wants Them Banned in Europe

RPE83

@xXDibbs
Yeah, i totally agree, despite initially having the same thoughts as Tasuki.
I am surprised that nobody has applied this level of complaint to Fifa and Madden, but then I guess they aren't owned by Disney who extensively market to children/family fun. I also gather you can also play online against people not using the Ultiamate Team mechanics, i.e. does it not pair "gamblers" against "gamblers" on Fifa and Madden and regular squads/players against likewise, but Battlefront 2, you were all in the same matches?

@ellsworth004 , @tasuki , agree on the debit cards/kids , but again, do you think Disney spending all winter marketing Star Wars to kids, and essentially give them a £60 sticker album and then no means to buy the really expensive stickers except for playing the game for a silly amount of time, is the type of family experience that Disney would be going for? Especially since they would probably be being beat badly by the characters they want to unlock, hence puting more pressure on them to want to have them.

I can't see "Attack of the Clones Chocolate Death Sticks" coming out either.

@kyleforrester87 - Yes, it's gambling, the panini stickers album comparison I made myself fails on
a) price
b) the fact you pay to win under BF2's system, stickers you pay to collect and own
c) the fact that even the stickers you don't want can be traded with other collectors as bargaining chips.

I'm not foaming at the mouth in outrage here, I'm just avoiding the game till it's silly cheap then picking it up for the solo campaign as a star wars fan. I think EA have just pushed it (profiteering) a bit too far here with the wrong IP.

Re: Analyst: Gamers Are Overreacting Over Star Wars, Publishers Should Increase Prices

RPE83

I think physical prices, under the old ways of "you bought a game, you traded it with mates, sold it on ebay", then yes, we've had it good for a long time.

Under the digital , "you pay for a non refundable, non transferable license for you to use the software that can have , if not installed, its ability to be accessed removed at any given time", prices are more than fair.

Re: Belgium Reckons Loot Boxes Are Gambling, Wants Them Banned in Europe

@get2sammyb
Totally agreed, it's been the perfect storm. But what did the company that absolutely must be seen as squeaky clean honest family fun think would happen when throwing one of their crown jewels into the ring with the gaming company known for extorting every last drop out of football and football fans by essentially making their games sticker albums and making people complete a sticker book every year.

Which brings me on to...

@Tasuki - I thought as you initially with the sticker albums and pokemon cards, how is this different?

Then as well as the @xXDibbs arguments, I also thought there is the price - A single BF2 Loot Crate was what, £5.99 ontop of a £60 game? A pack of stickers is 50p on top of a £3 sticker album, (http://collectibles.panini.co.uk/editorial/panini-football-2017-sticker-collection.html) the economics is more palatable, especially with children.

Like the fixed odds betting terminals, it's not whether they are good or bad in theory (certainly debatable), the argument was the price per chance for a game deliberately designed to be addictive to people and remove money from them. If loot crates in BF2 were 50p, and the game was £3, I don't think there would be this level of hubbub.

Re: Round Up: Star Wars Battlefront 2 Reviews Lurch Towards the Dark Side

RPE83

"With a single player campaign and the developers listening to player feedback , this is sure to be an improvement".

It seem that is us who are mistaken, about a great.many.things.

"Players will feel like they've truly earned a hero character"

EA told us the truth.......from a certain point of view.

"Players will need to play for 60 hours to earn a hero"

60 Hours!? I could almost design my own star wars game in that time. I don't have to sit here and listen to this.

It's not that i like EA and their shoddy business practises, I hate it, but I'm a big Star Wars fan and there's nothing I can do about it right now. It's coming out soon and the Last Jedi feels such a long way away.

Re: Review: Sonic Mania (PS4)

RPE83

Played Green Hill Zone, the nostalgia/new balance seems pretty good so far, the start was "classic", but it soon changed into a new layout incorporating Sonic 1, 2, 3, and CD elements.

It does feel so far like the "real" Sonic 4, which is what I was hoping for

Also, Extra Credits on YouTube;
https://www.youtube.com/user/ExtraCreditz/search?query=games+matter

I see mediums as platforms, platforms to provide entertainment but also ask questions, evoke emotions, and make us think.

The "What Remains of Edith Finch?" Canning Factory scene was a beautiful use of the medium to convey the detatchment from reality juxtaposed with the mundaneness of that reality.

I think it being interactive gave it more power, though I could imagine it as a film, or a comic book.

Re: Guide: Elite Dangerous Tips and Tricks for Beginners

RPE83

Yes, really enjoying the game. I actually love the depth of the game and the fact nothing is explained to you and you have to pick it up by either feeling your way into it, or going on the web and getting advice.

Appreciate Minecraft does have a little tutorial, but it did remind me of that, you can run around doing simple stuff fairly quickly , but it takes time to be efficient at the simple stuff, then there's a whole new level under that, and so on, and so on.

Re: E3 2017: Horizon: Zero Dawn's Frozen Wilds Will Add a New Area and Story

RPE83

@Gamer83
I agree, I think TLOU was more because it was the fall and decay of society we knew and the characters were very self aware of this, Horizon was about the continuation of a post apocalyptic world where people were hopeful of the future and plotting their own course; we only have the full context about what came before as the player.

Ah thanks, it was more I expected now manufacturing has ceased , a Wii U to be around £200 so I could pick one up, Zelda and a proper pad for less or about the cost of a switch. I saw the performance docked for Switch was comparable to Wii U (and I never played Skyward Sword either) , but I saw that even in the rare place you can get a full price new Wii U, they are still £250!

Thanks for the tip. With that in mind, I will probably wait till Christmas and get a Switch, and clear my PS4 backlog until then.

Re: Are You Cereal? A Life Is Strange Prequel Just Leaked

RPE83

@themcnoisy
Alien : Covenant is good I suppose if I completely ignored the mythology of the films we already loved, and pretend Alien wasn't the same film, but superior, with better horror pacing, with CGI worse than the 1979 costumes, and wasn't yet another film Ridley Scott is making to promote a seeming mid life Christianity conversion.

On a serious note, It was beautifully shot though, and I agree wasn't rubbish.

Re: June 2017 PlayStation Plus Games Announced

RPE83

@naruball
Well, I'm in my 30's and I loved the game, despite the dialogue grating at times, still is perhaps my favourite PS4 experience game so far, the soundtrack was awesome.

I don't think age is a strictly consideration to whether teen drama appeals or not, more so everyone has so much free time and is more likely to take a punt on somethinig in their radar, but probably by your 30's you have less free time to burn and more of a clear idea of what you like and what you don't; I know people that categorically will not play a third person game, ever, missing out on some of the best PS games of all time because they simply cannot abide that perspective. I find it hilarious, but ultimately, to each their own, what they play has no bearing on me.

Ultimately PushSq tends to review in line with my personal feelings, which is why I hang around here. I loved Edith Finch and paid full price as i trust the reviews and like interactive fiction, So glad i did. It's only a shame I already bought and loved LiS otherwise i'd be over the moon this month

Re: Horizon: Zero Dawn Developer Recruiting Quest Designers

RPE83

@RedMageLanakyn
I felt perhaps The Witcher did a better job of hiding the mundaneness of some of the side quests with awesome writing, perhaps Batman too.

Or I feel Horizon, using familiar pieces from the above two games, is either a small, yet noticable step behind, or arguably equal to those two on this, so maybe expecting more a couple of years later, it feels like a lot less in perspective.

Re: UK Sales Charts: Wildlands Scores the Largest Launch of the Year

@BAMozzy
Hey, I never told you that!

I really want to play Zelda, but Nintendo are making it hard to buy essentially a gimmick console every few years to play one or two excellent first party games, and a lot of other not so excellent stuff.

Infact, I'd probably rather play Zelda, but will more likely buy and play Horizon for exactly this reason.

Re: Review: Night in the Woods (PS4)

RPE83

@fabisputza00
I suppose considering you walk around the same few screens, pushing square on the same characters in the same place, it could definately be described as 'boring' , but I feel it's more an intentional slow pace highlighting the ennui of dropping out of school and hanging around your dying home town without a plan, and that's by design.

The writing, characters, art and music are some of the best I've seen recently, and one of the few games that leaves you with something to think about and discuss afterwards. (You never see Mae's parents together, except in the photos. Almost like they lead seperate lives, but it's never really stated, or highlighted, just something i noticed) .

It's not perfect, but one of the most heartfelt and evocative games since Life is Strange and I'd give it a 9 easily.

The Ovarian Order of the Illuminati have ALL the power over games featuring women.

@kyleforrester87
People are so deeply entrenched in their points of view that you just know the touch paper topics where people have already decided to conjour up some imaginary "liberal" or "conservative" who will be upset and pre-emptive strike them with a funny/inflamatory comment. Ignoring the fact that a video game android bum is neither that offensive, nor is it any great victory for um, "something" i guess? It's just a bum, with pants on. If you are that interested, you can see said bum. Bum.

Mad world we live in where a very small percentage of liberals want everything banned because someone might be upset, and a very small percentage of Conservatives want everything to be on the table so that someone CAN get annoyed.

Re: NieR Automata Ain't Hiding 2B's Bubble Butt

@CountFunkula78 @Rudy_Manchego
It wasn't sexist or non sexist, it was the comical justification that Kojima cooked up in advance because he knew it was cheap titilation and wanted to give it some high brow emotional depth.

Raiden was naked because he'd been tortured, made sense, in a "Never change, Japanese sensibilties" kind of way. Imagine if Kojima had said that after failing to save EE, Raiden was burining up with grief and had to run around nude else he'd overheat and catch fire.

Well no, to be fair, the follow up question was "So you horribly injured her, that led to a life changing ilness and subsequently losing her ability to talk, so rather than revenge she sought you out to flirt with you?"

And then I channelled my inner Alec Baldwin from Team America and started going "Legendary Big Boss! Love on the Battlefield! Hideo is an Auteur! Corporations!"

Re: NieR Automata Ain't Hiding 2B's Bubble Butt

RPE83

@Rudy_Manchego
I had the same Quiet conversation. My wife asked why the male characters were wearing suitable clothing for war , and Quiet was running round like a stripper and waving her buttocks at me in the chopper.

I channelled my inner Kojima and told her to not be hasty and judgemental, it's actually a tragic condition because she is like a human plant and via photosynthesis, she needs sunlight to live, hence the lack of clothes. Infact she has this condition because I horribly burned her, and although the physical scars of the third degree burns recovered perfectly so she looked like a Dutch model again, the skin underneath the skin was irrevocably damaged, or something.

She was suitably sorry,

Re: This Is Why Devs Don't Bother Finishing Games

RPE83

@themcnoisy
True, gamers have a lot of choice in buying a game now.
You can go all in with pre-order and season pass, getting all the content asap from release, while paying a premium.
You can get the game day 1, not buy any DLC.
You can buy the game used
You can wait a couple of months, wait for the first 30% off or so sale, and get the game and season pass for the original RRP
You can get the game in a sale, then wait for the season pass to be in a sale
You can buy the GOTY, and so on

EA made $650m off Ultimate Team Microtransactions alone last year, out of $1.3bn DLC revenue total.
In the good old days, I guess we would have had ultimate team and cheats as part of the package, but now they are sold to us.

Buying a game feels like playing the stock market to me now, I have a vague idea of what I want to play, and what I'll be willing to pay, based on reviews, then I wait for the price to fall low enough for me to bite. If a game is at the "low end" of my price range, there is a good chance it's also been fully patched and content released, which is an additional bonus.

Re: 70% of Final Fantasy XV's Team Is Still Focused on the Game

RPE83

@RedMageLanakyn
I actually did read the article Sammy linked, I didn't read the links at the bottom of the article.
Some of the changes like the off road car and changing chapter 13 still feel a bit "Why?", irrespective of whether SE are compounding debt or pouring away profit.

Never said the New Game+ , PC port work or DLC was bad, fair play to them on that.

Re: 70% of Final Fantasy XV's Team Is Still Focused on the Game

RPE83

@kyleforrester87
Well, they are treating it like Destiny or a MMORPG, the chocobo carnival was very much akin to the Destiny Halloween event.

Not really snorting at it either, it just doesn't make sense when you have a protracted bloated development that was aiming for perfection, that was edited down into a very good game stitched together with several awesome, yet disjointed components.

Not a shareholder at all, but I am a fan and a developer so from my perspective, Square Enix seem to make some really bizarre decisions and compound bad mistakes for no real gain to the players or themselves.
Would anyone have missed the chocobo mog mega carnival? No.
Will anyone buy the game for the VR mission? No.
If people hated Chapter 13, but still felt compelled to finish the game, then it had it's desired effect (I liked it, myself). Unless they can see people actively stop playing the game BECAUSE of it, why spend resources rewriting it?

I'll give the multiplayer and story DLC a go, and I really liked a lot of the things they did with the game, it's just putting the resource into, say FFXV-II makes more business and game sense than some of the support they are doing.

I feel like, as a fan, all this tinkering with a cobbled together sum of excellent parts is preventing someone putting them together really well in a new adventure.

Unless, of course, they do what Konami did in the same situation with MGS V and bang out "FF XV - Survive", then I'll take the Chococbo Carnival and be thankful.

Re: 70% of Final Fantasy XV's Team Is Still Focused on the Game

RPE83

@kyleforrester87
It's because it could easily be seen like a wasted effort, or flogging a horse.

Nobody is moaning developers are supporting a game, they are moaning they are wasting resources treating FFXV like Destiny, or Overwatch, which are fundamentally very different games.

There is a difference between DLC or episodic support like Half Life 2, and pointless reskins of an annoying area that remove the best thing in the game (the cameraderie between characters).

I'm not even moaning, I got my money's worth with the game in the state it was released, but it's a shame when art or story is compromised to fit a DLC "model" that won't be used by or please a good percentage of players, nor bring the company any more revenue.
