The original Star Wars Battlefront was one of those edge cases where it attracted a mixed critical response but was actually reasonably well-liked by fans. With the sequel, publisher EA and developer DICE will have been hoping to improve upon the original’s Metacritic rating of 73 – but it’s going to have its work cut out if early reviews are anything to go by.
We would urge you to be cautious before putting too much stock in these verdicts, but it’s not like the game’s receiving universal acclaim. Still, we’ll be waiting until launch day before starting our review; we want to make sure we’re playing the exact same code as you will be.
IGN - 7/10 (In Progress)
I find my opinion of Battlefront 2 shifts depending on what I choose to expect from it. If I’m looking for a rich Star Wars story alongside a deep competitive shooter, this definitely isn’t it. But in terms of delivering on that Star Wars fantasy, jumping from corner to corner of the galaxy to see as much as it has to offer, Battlefront 2 succeeds in a very fun way. I’m just not sure there’s enough here to keep me interested for very long.
US Gamer - 3.5/5
Battlefront 2's good qualities have been obscured by the neverending loot box saga, but they shouldn't be forgotten. It's just a pity that they aren't front and center where they should be.
GameSpot - 6/10 (In Progress)
While its main narrative feels unresolved, and the general loop of the multiplayer carries a number of issues, Battlefront II still manages to evoke that same sense of joy and excitement found in the core of what the series is all about. But as it stands, the biggest hurdle that Battlefront II will need to overcome -- for its simultaneous attempts to balance microtransactions with genuine feeling of accomplishments - -is deciding on what type of game it wants to be.
Shack News - 6/10
Star Wars: Battlefront II is a pretty good game and you’re going to get it if you’re a fan of Star Wars, no matter what anyone says. I’m just thankful that the game is an improvement over the first attempt and is incredibly fun solo, or with friends online. The loot crates diminish its value greatly, and it’s a shame EA forces them down your throat as part of the core gameplay, but the game looks gorgeous and is enjoyable to play.

Shocker..
in the words of Darth Sidious " everything is proceeding as i have foreseen" maniacal laugh
The only thing missing from all these reviews is the phrase "Poor man's Splatoon", because that's clearly what this game is.
@KirbyTheVampire Pahahaha! Beautiful!
OUCH the Beta felt so much fun and an improvement over the first game! Now I'm sad :/ If the loot is really that much of a problem to lower scores like that.....
Squit Game.
@AFCC I didn't like the beta at all. I thought it felt like it had gone backwards personally.
Honestly, you reviewers have a lot of power to keep devs from abusing Loot box systems in game. Reviewers need to penalize games an automatic point or two when they implement loot boxes or hold characters hostage like EA had chose to do.
I will wait on it, if I ever pick it up. You want more than $60 from me, EA? You are going to definitely get less than $60 from me now.
Not surprised, to be honest.
Geez. This really looks like a poor man's Splatoon after all. I was hoping it wouldn't turn out like this. I thought that perhaps it could be even BETTER than Splatoon. But nope. Not even close to Splatoon 1. Just a poor man's Splatoon.
@KirbyTheVampire Battlefront 2 is Splatoon without fun, epicness and ink.
It's averaging 80/100 on Metacritic, now though.
It's a pretty good game that has been soiled by loot boxes and the grind. It's actually really fun and a huge step up from the previous game and it was supposed to be the chosen one, but then EA just had to put their grubby hands on it.
@JoeBlogs Interesting. That 71 score was from 7 reviews but the PS4 score was from 18 reviews so far.
I was keeping on eye on this for its campaign but a few reviews suggest its not even complete. The problem is EA who seem far more interested in taking your money then making great games
"With a single player campaign and the developers listening to player feedback , this is sure to be an improvement".
It seem that is us who are mistaken, about a great.many.things.
"Players will feel like they've truly earned a hero character"
EA told us the truth.......from a certain point of view.
"Players will need to play for 60 hours to earn a hero"
60 Hours!? I could almost design my own star wars game in that time. I don't have to sit here and listen to this.
It's not that i like EA and their shoddy business practises, I hate it, but I'm a big Star Wars fan and there's nothing I can do about it right now. It's coming out soon and the Last Jedi feels such a long way away.
Interesting. I have a feeling the game will be a lot worse than described a month from now, as everyone who doesn't pay for the loot boxes is getting their ass kicked by those who do. If EA hold to their original vision for monetisation.
I mean, this will sell bottom loads regardless but I wonder if it might do worse then the first and the marketing for this game has been really rather expensive.
Shame that the SP campaign doesn't sound as substantial as that promised.
Will the lootbox scandal hurt overall sales? I think it will stop a lot of game savvy people buying it but the people in the supermarket at Christmas aren't going to care. However, if this doesn't hit EA's projected sales, even if they are good, they may listen. If it isn't substantial enough to maintain a good player base, people aren't going to want to buy those micro-transactions.
With this being a Star wars title I can't help but feel this is pivotal moment in gaming. I think many eyes are watching the outcome for this game and depending which way it goes may possibly influence future releases. Micro transactions of this magnitude imho have no place in gaming and I won't be buying it.
They need a loot box in the game that you can unlock that has a gesture for your character to shoot themselves in the foot, because that is clearly what EA has done with this franchise. They can’t seem to get out of their own way — they fix the lack of a SP campaign from the first game, only to add microtransactions to ruin something else. Good grief.
I cancelled my pre-order. Will come back to it at a later date. Still have Battlefront 2015 to enjoy my StarWars pew-pew.
I'm generally turning a blind eye to the reviews and feedback, this series is the only "FPS" I bother with now simple because it's Star Wars.
Buying it around the time the movie goes out IF it's under 39.99$
I'll pick it up around $15.
...despite me loving the hell out of it so far, I feel the review sites have an obligation to the industry and to their readers to really highlight the loot box (and arcade timer aspect "come back to tomorrow to get more credits?!?! WTF?!?!) debacle and mark this down accordingly - it really shouldn't be getting more than 5/10 - full marks for gameplay mechanics / maps / etc. - 0/10 for trying to fleece the eyeballs out of people who have paid £50+ for this... you can clearly tell who provides the bulk of IGN's advertising revenue... :/
Liked the beta do not care about loot boxes or microtransactions will not spoil the enjoyment of the game. There is always going to be negavity towards this game because its fashionable right now with websites to hightlighting this issue of loot boxes.
Enough instances like this and companies might start dialing back on such nonsense.
I only care about the single player campaign. Is that any good? I can't tell because all the reviews I've seen are too focused on the multiplayer.
I did enjoyed the Beta but I will not be forking out until it hits under £30.
Imagine paying £50 and upwards of whatever version of this game you wanted only to find out that the biggest charachters are locked behind a loot box which you can either pay even more to get or grind grind grind grind an untold amount of time to "unlock" It really is shameful, I hope this is a turning point for big developers re:Loot Crates.
If you have paid for the most expensive version of a game either digitally or physically then stuff like this should never be included.
Will this go the same way as Mass Effect Andromeda? More job losses looming?
@dryrain Ah man your full of it with people like you they will pull even worse things in the future. I love the backlash they deserve it. 😉
At least the good Battlefront 2 game's servers are back up. It's super cheap usually so I recommend just buying that game. It would be awesome if sales for that game are higher than this games this week.
@get2sammyb in what aspects? I thought the gameplay was solid and the points system an improvement over camping the symbol to be the hero! But I only played for like an hour and maybe I got the wrong idea
Looks to be a fun game in my opinion. However with EA's awful business ethics I feel like a lot of people will shy away from buying the game
A short (4-5hrs), disjointed, disappointing and open ended campaign with fewer multi-player modes than its predecessor, its average at best. The Multi-player is certainly fun BUT you can't get away from the 'loot' box problem and how that affects progression. Game-play, visuals and audio are certainly good enough to have given this a decent chance but you do feel that the loot box issue will lose many people - a lot before they purchase and the rest, when they realise how much 'more' money they need to invest to get the most out of it.
Oh no I have actualy play the game to unlock things!!?!?!?!? People just want everything given to them these days
@Dankestdankz I‘m sorry to see that you have no clue about the situation as a whole.
@Dankestdankz
Im guessing you dont use Reddit.
The first Battlefront was alright but very shallow, considering Battlefront 2 has more depth that's very good thing. It's not that the game is bad because that's far from the truth, it's the loot box thing Now every game not just Battlefront is going to have loot boxes, you can thank Youtubers for that and the people that buy them. Unless Battlefront 2 change's it's pay 2 win I'll not be buying it.
Sounds like horrible mobile free-to-play game. That costs $60.
Looks like BF2 is mainly getting bad reviews because of microtransactions. Many reviewers put a big minus on the score.
