I mean that's great, but I'm really starting to think that Sony's first party 2024 PS5 release schedule is going to be nothing besides GAAS flops & a hastily put together TLOU Part 2 "remake".
I'll be honest, I actually enjoyed sharing the plat trophies or a few screenshots during my run of whatever big story game I'm on, but yeah, I get it after Lon surged the API cost. The platform has gone down pretty heavily, it's basically a crappy live service game with a bunch of people trying to bait engagement for ad $$$ now.
Legendary levels of failure from Jim Ryan & Sony on buying Bungie. Destiny 2 has become one of the most lazy, low/reused content, over monetized, FOMO baiting "games" ever created. The worst part is that the people who have no control of that crap take the fall when players get sick of it and finally move on. So many players questioned how sustainable it was to constantly reuse content, go all in on microtransactions & milk a dwindling pool of whales, and we've got our answer. This should be the final wake up call for Sony, GET OUT of this live service garbage right now while you still can! (and tea leaves suggest they are already doing it)
I'm betting this never releases. Sony severely overestimated the PlayStation community's interest in Bungie, the little honeymoon period where they could shutdown Naughty Dog games seems to be very, very over. Sony is gonna relegate them to going all in on Destiny to ensure they actually pull a profit.
Terrible, hate to see people getting laid off, this is top level Japan/Sony finally cleaning up Jim Ryan's mess. Bungie is Ryan's magnum opus and it is a complete and utter whiff. Have a feeling the recovery process on the damage he's done to the game pipeline is not going to be fun.
This is just sad! We need DW10! Such a great series, DW9 was a complete whiff but DW2 - DW8 was a massive hot streak, still pop on DW8 here & there, the hypothetical musou routes were just ace game design to change up the historic stuff. If DW10 isn't on the table, would love access to the older games on current gen at least!
Well deserved! I know how intoxicating those live service numbers look to the suits, but THIS will always be PlayStation's bread & butter and there's nothing they'll ever do to change it. Here's hoping the next people in charge lean heavily into what makes PS great aka AAA, single player, story driven blockbuster exclusives and not try to fix what isn't broke.
Credit where credit is due, they gamed the system and got it done. Curious how this impacts the big 3 and if Xbox gets any momentum from it. Nintendo will be fine, they've been doing their thing for 30+ years and are hotter than ever. Sony, normally I'd say just keep doing what they do, but they have leveraged all their good will the past few years for GAAS & PC pennies and are vulnerable at the worst possible time with a core fanbase on edge. Well done, Jim Ryan!
One of the greatest games of all time, but wow, this got a groan from me. Not even surprised, and they're not even mentioning PC Ports anymore as that has been a complete disaster as well lol.
I'm sadly expecting a good amount of "remasters" the next few years to keep us fed while Japan cleans up Jim Ryan's live service & PC mess.
Goodnight, sweet prince. Japan must've saw the damage all of this live service crap was about to do the brand and is going scorched earth internally. Don't fix what ain't broke. Look what happened when Microsoft tried and look what happened when Nintendo didn't. Stick to your bread & butter, make great single player story driven exclusives and everything will be just fine.
I'm a physical advocate and always will be, but I'll tell you Bravia Core is the best streaming app I've ever used. As long as you let it hit your internet hard, it's the closest streaming will ever come to blu ray quality.
Streamed some of the Resident Evil movies in the 4K IMAX Enhanced dts format and it's very impressive!
Absolutely ridiculous decisions all around, the Fortnite explosion broke these studios and we're all seeing it play out years later. Can't even get access to older Sonic games aka their bread & butter on current gen consoles but they'll go all in on an unknown IP for a heavily cornered/declining market.
Let Naughty Dog cook up big single player exclusives like they want to and always have. With that being said, it is disgusting that Bungie basically got this game destroyed because it wasn't an engagement farming cosmetic shop. I absolutely hate the corporate stink that Bungie has brought to PS Studios and Jim Ryan welcomed them with open arms.
No one on here saw this coming! Even the usual suspects that defend everything Sony does were hesitant to fully back them on this live service crap. Bottom line: don't fix what ain't broke. PlayStation has 25+ years of console success on the backs of incredible single player exclusives. They jumped on the service train 5 years too late, the market is cornered & even titans like Fortnite are on the decline. It's all fool's gold that was inflated by unsustainable pandemic numbers.
Billionaire CEO Tim Sweeney goes on an extremely expensive crusade against Apple that he had no chance of winning and they got slapped with a cool $245 Million fine from the FTC.
The response? Raise v-buck (Fortnite $$$) prices and layoff 900 people while admitting the bubble is bursting on live services. Good people taking the fall for the clowns that run these companies.
Shrewd business man no doubt, but the walls were starting to cave in on his "savviness". Most of, if not all of the big exclusives that we love were green lit under Shawn Layden, he was there to simply carry the baton to the finish line on masterpieces.
Jimbo's hands were all over the dramatic price increases, failed PC port mission, heavy focus on "Live Service" 5 years too late, and the worst, most egregious thing he did: heavily cut down the amount of exclusives released per year.
All of the bad stuff they were doing was always met with "don't worry the console game pipeline won't be impacted", and of course, after a strong PS5 launch, it was impacted and cut to down to ONE PS5 exclusive per year. Never disrespect your console base and I believe Jim Ryan did that.
Its about time. I'm so sick of how Sony has been operating the past few years. Now Uncle Jimbo has plenty of time to play live services and PC ports, and its hilarious that he bailed before him and Hulst's little GAAS ambition flops and sets them back years on development. Maybe the next person in charge will actually deliver more than one PS5 game per year and show just a tiny bit of respect to us console peasants that have kept them in business for 30 years.
Love the first comments that pop up were union busting, pro AI comments! Gamersâ„¢ always stepping up to the plate! In all seriousness, the game industry probably gets away with way more than the studios were getting away with in Hollywood. All of these strikes have been long overdue, I hope everyone gets what they want and of course, once everyone gets what they want, the studios, publishers, etc will still be making BILLIONS. Everyone can win here, sadly one side has to fight for it like the game is on Give Me God of War difficulty.
This is one of my most anticipated games of all time. FF7R captured me and it just has not gone away. Feel like I've been waiting for this since the credits rolled with "Hollow" playing.
I'm almost relieved reading all the comments mocking Phil Used Car Salesman Spencer.
I'll say it every time this discussion pops up, there is zero wrong with exclusives, they will always be the backbone of this industry, the best of the best, but just please stop giving Uncle Phil brownie points for talking them down when he didn't have any!
@danzoEX no I'm with you sadly. Just like you, got the plats for Spidey & MM as well, love them both but SM2 is just not bringing out any big hype or emotion at this point.
Reached the point where I don't care about PS "exclusives" anymore, Jim Ryan's Sony has ruined what an "exclusive" is at this point, they abuse the concept when it's basically become "try it first on PS5". It's a must play, I'll be there.
But 3 months? That's nothing, the walls are closing in on they're little Square Enix meal ticket.
I can't believe I'm actually 100x more excited for Final Fantasy than I am Spider-Man but here we are. That FF7R is just too special, been wanting more ever since beating it.
We are truly down to one Sony first party single player per year now and it kind of hurts my heart lol. That being said, FF7 Rebirth looks legendary and Spidey 2 will be a good time.
The strategy of Sony punishing their loyal console players because their other efforts continue to fail is something I'm not liking. PC Ports have been a complete flop, their early live service games have been disasters, and it's been met with price increases across the board, useless, overpriced accessories that only loyal console people would buy, dwindling first party offerings in favor of service games. They have cashed in all of their earned loyalty from PS4 and then some.
Writing is on the wall for subscriptions, so this is simply turning the pro sub people into even bigger cash cows. All of these companies are desperately trying to keep those lockdown numbers intact and it ain't gonna happen. As for Sony itself, this is what happens when you're the market leader, your fans let you get away with everything and you have little competition.
So basically, it sold good, they made their money back already and then some (thanks Sony), but foolishly expected FF7R numbers and are now doing the always weird Square PR games. Rebirth is going to sell triple in its launch month and they'll probably start whining about the FF16 sales again lol
These new AAA games are actually looking...stuffed with content? Like I know most of us on here despise live service, but with an increasing battle for players' time & $$$, it seems like these games are actually bringing some heat.
Review "bombing" (well deserved) aside, the game is not in its best state ever, and they can that and their $26 skins, and take a hike. With this and how fast Diablo went into the dumps after they did the "smooth launch, bad stuff later" scam, it's sad to see what has happened to Blizzard.
Absolutely. Live service is the most sinister way of "game" making. They are all designed first and foremost to sell skins, passes, etc, while engagement baiting, FOMO, etc. They're a poison to this industry.
The more Rockstar gets away with, the more nervous I get for GTA VI. The online part of 6 is a near lock to be a live service dystopia, I'm just hoping they still have it in them make a great single player part free of gaming industry garbage.
Take-Two is so corporate now it's pretty sad. Port aka lowest amount of work + feed it to the 125+ Million Switchs & 100+ Million PS4s + zero mention of current gen + full price = profit.
There's only one headline that causes more cringe than "Microsoft acquires" and its "Tencent acquires". Can't believe what is happening behind the scenes to this industry!
They don't produce enough exclusives anymore to justify this, and they all end up on PC anyway at this point. If I wanted to continually upgrade my hardware, I'll just jump ship to PC. We're being milked!
I completely understand chasing the Fortnite bag, even though that market is totally cornered and it will take a near perfect case scenario to break through. I just have a feeling that this whole "live service" push is going to end so poorly for Sony, they're hoping to convert God of War & Horizon single player gamers into skin buyers, it just ain't gonna happen on the grand scale that they need to justify these investments. Without Square Enix stepping up massively with FF XVI & FF7 Rebirth, we've lowkey already seen their first party output get cut down to one big AAA single player exclusive per year. Just feels like they're way too late to this market and they're gonna make their core audience, who's carried them via single player exclusives since PS1, suffer as they desperately chase it.
Game Pass kind of lit a fire under me in the exact opposite way Microsoft intended. I make sure I support the games I want to continue to be made now. Ragnarok, Tears of the Kingdom, FFXVI, etc. I'm rallying behind the giant AAA single player exclusives before I take Microsoft's too good to be true deal and help them destroy the industry.
I'd like to thank COD for help funding our $200+ million blockbuster exclusives. This should also answer anyone's questions as to why Jim Ryan has gone scorched earth on this deal, that's a lot of revenue & if it starts to dwindle away, people's jobs at the very top come in question.
Awesome! Can't wait to continue to game under the threat of Microsoft trying to buy anyone and everyone! Rich boys who still can't compete with the Japanese big dogs, no matter how deep their pockets are.
I'll say it a million times, there's absolutely nothing wrong with exclusives, they are the biggest and best games this industry has. The problem is that Microsoft and Phil Spencer preach this used car salesman unity "when everyone plays, we all win" garbage while doing the exact opposite behind the scenes!
I love that every argument from Microsoft is "we suck, it's our own fault, we pushed Game Pass that cratered our sales, we said exclusives didn't matter when they clearly do, now please let us buy up the industry as a reward".
Yeah sorry I used to give Sony the benefit of the doubt but this is just way too Bungie for me. Not cool, scummy, preying on your loyal players type of stuff
"Nothing to show because Sony had us waste 3 years of dev time on Factions and then let scummy Bungie get it buried." Sorry still a little salty about that whole situation. Imagine how far along TLOU3 or Jak or any other big story game from ND would be right now if that whole fiasco didn't happen.
I understand why people are liking that Xbox showcase, I agree that I'd love Sony to stop being so cagey and I mean it in no hating way, most of what Microsoft showed just doesn't interest me. I want those mega AAA, single player story games that I can count on and that PlayStation has come to be known for.
The Xbox showcase was better than Sony's, but at the end of the day for me, after this whole "Summer Game Fest" is done, I'm rolling with FF XVI, Spidey 2 & FF7 Rebirth over all that other stuff every single time.
