Another State of Play showcase from Sony has now been and gone, this time sharing news for previously revealed indie and third-party games. A fairly low-key affair for saying it was only the second general State of Play livestream of 2023, but there were a few announcements and reveals to take note of.
The big piece of news was that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches for PS5 on 29th February 2024. Other reveals were the Resident Evil 4 DLC Separate Ways, an expansion for Tales of Arise, and focuses on indies like Baby Steps.
As always, though, we want to hear what your immediate reactions to Sony's latest State of Play livestream. Were you impressed with the announcements or did you come away wanting more? Place your vote in our poll and then expand on your thoughts in the comments below.

FF7 Rebirth looks amazing, and I'm sure Spider-Man 2 will be a hit, but otherwise it wasn't great.
Needed new non-VR/multiplayer announcements.
4/10 the Switch 3 and Peggle 5 wasn't shown off.
Does the Pope sh*t in the woods? No, the answer is he sh*ts on a golden toilet. This was not a golden toilet of a SoP, this was a tetanus-riddled pub urinal.
BROOOOO THAT REBIRTH TRAILER
It wasn't amazing but it wasn't terrible like some people will try and make out it was. A solid 7/10 from me.
FF7 ReBirth, Avatar, HellDivers 2, Spiderman 2, Tales of Arise DLC, Resident Evil 4 DLC and Foamstars all looked great and all day one must haves after tonights SoP.
Also wow how stacked is February looking now.
We are truly down to one Sony first party single player per year now and it kind of hurts my heart lol. That being said, FF7 Rebirth looks legendary and Spidey 2 will be a good time.
Worth the wait? It was only announced yesterday wasn't it? π
I thought it was okay, people get too worked up over these in my opinion
20 mins, most of which were trailers for things we've already seen enough of, yah I would say it was even worse than the last SOP/Direct. Apparently, the only time we hear from Sony now, is when a third party pays them to garner inflated views for paid dlc trailers.
Sony either has nothing, or what is coming is going to get alotta live service hate backlash, or they have fallen into such corporate hubris that they don't think, nor care to even pretend to need to drum up gamer hype for the future of the platform or even deliver real fan service.
FF7 looks ok although we don't gleam much from that trailer. I genuinely worry they will really trim the game down into mostly linear corridors between encounters. I hope not, because that would really be doing FF7 dirty.
This State of Play is an insult to Playstation customers.
I have absolutely no hype for the future of Playstation after that. I didn't expect much, yet this was still extremely disappointing and one of the worse presentations in recent memory.
It really does seem Playstation is now "for the payers" as they only care about selling expensive hardware now.
The fake try hard gamer dialog in the Helldivers section put me right off it.
Hyped for FF Rebirth though.
I went in with very low expectations, but the Separate Ways DLC, Spider-Man 2 trailer, Avatar and The awesome Final Fantasy 7 trailer made this, for me at least, a really good State of Play!
FF7 looks dope.cant believe how much they have crammed in.
Presentation was boring. Felt like they presented a budget report in an internal meeting!
Ff7 rebirth looks spectacular. The Golden Saucer π₯° and RE seperate ways looks great. Resi4 vr looks impressive and ghostbusters looks fun (abit like the star trek bridge captain game). Spiderman continues to look fantastic.
Show zipped by which is a positive but i'd have liked to see more titles.
Baby steps looked like an octodad clone so i failed to see what was particularly innovative.
Overall an ok show, but with some big spectacular highlights (not intentionally a spidey pun). Sony continues to have significant room for improvement but i think that was much better
February continues to look like a very expensive month!
Weird cuz I thought this was all about third party games and indies. It was Spiderman 2, Rebirth and a couple PSVR2 games. Granted all 3 look great. But seriously. Wth was that?
This place is just awful. Are you guys happy about anything? Everything shown comes out in a few months. If they show stuff years out yβall all complain too. Go outside
FF7 looks great! Helldivers 2 is concerning though. I was really hoping it would be a day one PlayStation Extra/Premium title. Being full price and coming out in the busy month of February could make that game DOA. I'll be waiting for a sale on that game for sure lol. The State of Play was good in my opinion. My expectations were in check, so I wasn't disappointed.
Damn why was it so short? Was expecting more. Nothing there really got excited for the future of PlayStation. Also where is stellar blade???
The gameplay trailer for Helldivers 2 took away any interest I had in the game. Played a lot of the first one and was looking forward to the second one, despite the ps+ price hike.
It was shorter than I expected.
When you've got a lineup that includes Resi 4, Avatar, Helldivers 2, Spider-Man 2, Honaki Starail and FF7 Rebirth. Your going to have at least a good SoP.
Interesting format change too, I wonder if they will do something similar for 1st party games with Herman Hulst doing the talking.
FF7 Rebirth with Vincent and Gold Saucer! We good, Sony, we good!!!
I thought it was fine and about what we expected. Helldivers 2 looks painfully generic though.
@Paddle1 Thets what she said
Is this the part where people start saying how disappointed they were although sony already stated it was going to just be updates on games already announced.
Do we get a showcase before the end of the year??? Still so many questions as to what first party studios are doing now. But this, for what Sony said it would be, lived up to the expectations.

Not great, not terrible, just ok. I think they just wanted an excuse to show that FF7 Rebirth trailer. I'm delighted with the Tales of Arise DLC, didn't see that coming.
Most of it was forgettable, but seeing more on Spider-Man 2 and Avatar was nice. Still, I think we've had worse.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Tales of Arise expansion and Spider-Man 2 alone made that a great show for me. So so excited for those. Everything else was just making it boring.
Rebirth was the only thing of real interest to me.
Also, what happened to the rumoured slim model?
I mean... Spiderman and Final Fantasy look amazing?
Otherwise, snore fest.
PS5 has got a strong lineup up the next 5 months regardless of what the usual folk will try to tell you.
No Rise of Ronin was a disapointment. Looking like it will be internally delayed into mid/late 2024 to balance out the lack of 1st/2nd party games for Sony in 2024.
Final fantasy 7 so hyped canβt wait for February
All it really did, as with many of the last few showcases I've watched, is further cement why I buy less games and less games with each passing year and am happy to reach into my back catalogue.
As I move into my 50s and modern gaming continues to bore me on a regular basis then it is without question that this generation will be my last.
Like the other recent State of Plays, extremely meh.
I really wanna know if their first party studios are still functioning.
It was good, seems like the first party games will be shown in 2024, or maybe november. I thought it was better then the Nintendo direct honestly, I know I will get hated on that for saying this but all they seem to be making is mario games these days. Loved the ff7 trailer February can't come soon enough.
That was pretty bad. I'm not into Spiderman and not into Final Fantasy so im pretty much screwed. And looks like Sony will only showcase 1 game a year so im probably going to sell my PS5 and check back in a few years. Better off getting an Xbox for gamepass.
@Dom_31 These are huge titles though, weβll see wolverine and other stuff once we get past these. There are amazing games coming out up until March. Weβll be fine
Some gems in there, if not much new. Spider-Man 2 looks amazing, FF 7 too. And looking forward to Avatar π
@LookingCoolJoker completely agree. Had they invested the money and effort into making Helldivers 2 a day one release on ps plus, thus cooling down the uproar of the disgusting price increases, it would have been such a smart move.
It's just another 3rd person co op looter shooter anyways and would have been perfect for a sub service to garner early adoption. such a missed opportunity and just a really bad leadership decision
Much better than expected. Final Fantasy Rebirth looks insane and Capcom really wants to make me buy stuff I will use just for their games.
I kinda liked the second anime game as well
@Martijn87 You shouldn't get hated on, that was one of the worst Nintendo Directs I've ever seen and I've seen them all.
Well the show started off with Baby Steps (literally) & I really started to fear for the worst.
But they turned it around. One of the better SOPs. 7/10.
I canβt wait till Februaryπ€©
@AdamNovice Indeed. Sometimes I feel like I'm in an alternate reality when I read the comments.
There's so much for me to be hyped about in the next 6+ months.
@PixelDragon Glad im not alone in how you feel as im feeling the same way. Maybe we aged out of video games cause im just not feeling it anymore.
Negativity in the pushsquare comment section, that's refreshing.
I enjoyed it. Release date for Helldivers and FF7. A dlc coming to one of the best Tales games very soon. RE4 Vr in December. Spiderman and FF7 looked incredible, I was not expecting Gold Saucer or Vincent reveals, let alone confirmed chocobo open world variants and vehicles.
People just love to cry here. That was an enjoyable state of play and delivered exactly what we were pretold it was going to be.
FF7 looks good. Didn't like the look of helldivers at all. Good show but missed some new announcements to elevate it a bit
I'm very excited for FF7, Spider-Man 2 and Helldivers 2.
You should all play Ghostrunner and thank me later
No major announcements. Updates on great games, overall, meh
@Shepherd_Tallon You can tell by certain people's comments (and not just on this article) that they just like to post negative comments non stop for the fun of it. Sony could show TLOU 3, Uncharted 5, Wolverine, Ghost of Tsushima 2 and new single player IP's that look amazing, yet these people will still find something to moan about.
I was reading the chat whilst the state of play was on and some people literally put negative comments to every single trailer sony just shown, like do they not like any games at all lol
@AdamNovice You can't please some people. And some people like to complain for the sake of it.
@UltimateOtaku91 Exactly!
I wanted to see more Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Helldivers 2, in that order. I got about half of what I wanted and had some interesting extras sprinkled in. Plus Helldivers 2 and Rebirth for release dates. I'm quite happy.
The Baby Steps game is the natural successor to SnowRunner.
The next part of FFVII looks like what we all hoped it would be. Will have to go back and complete the first one again. But I hate that thereβs DLCβ¦
Other than that, it was all terrible. Not enough VR2 stuff, which is largely all Iβm interested in. RE4 is a βmodeβ which likely means no trophies like in 8. Letβs hope not. That was a terrible mistake they surely canβt repeat.
@UltimateOtaku91 well considering the Switch is clearly at the end of its life cycle, that isn't surprising.
Personally, much better than the rubbish Playstation just showed. Luigi's Mansion 2 is a very good game, Paper Mario is meant to be very good as well, the other new games looked fun and the DLC for Splatoon 3 and MK8 is just going to help me enjoy the games even more. Plus we just had a direct just for Spier Mario Wonder.
Playstation had Spiderman 2, which we already knew a lot about, and an Avatar game which is being released on other consoles. Wow. You would have expected this to be the end of the PS5 life cycle, but it has barely even started yet.
@Snick27
The landscape has changed is all really. The kind of games I enjoy either don't exist in the development sphere any more or just are poor imitations. Sure there are a few recent new gems, (Elden Ring being a good example), but they're very few and far between.
Some are fed up of 'remasters' and the like, but I'm quite the opposite as the opportunity to play updated versions, (if done well), of what I consider to be classics is far more appealing to me. In fact, point in case the remasters of Tomb Raider 1, 2 & 3 was the best gaming news I read today.
@mac_da_man
Off topic, but I saw no EP13 in the comments for the EG review of Starfield? Has he been banned again?
I really wanted to see more of Ronin and Pragmata. They are my most hyped PS games
Tales Of Arise Expansion did anybody predict that? Awesome game. Spider-man 2 Final Fantasy Rebirth Resi Separate Ways all highlights
@PixelDragon
Yep, a few days before.Iβm sure heβs apoplectic.
@UltimateOtaku91 True. I like to think the best of people, but I know you're right.
Personally I let out a little manly squeal when I saw a black chocobo climbing a mountain in the FF trailer. I didn't think they'd include the different colour chocobos for different terrain types mechanic.
That was enough to get me giddy.
Then there was the rest.
Pretty terrible as usual. Glad I didn't tune in.
Are people complaining about the SoP? Huh weird.....let me go off and watch the Rebirth trailer for the tenth time.
@UltimateOtaku91
"like do they not like any games at all"
I like games, just not the same ones as you. Obviously.
@Shepherd_Tallon For me its not even the quantity. Spiderman, FF7 Rebirth, Like a Dragon, and Persona 3 alone are going to last me to next summer i expect π im not sure how i'd be able to fit much more in. And thats not thinking about the likes of Assasins Creed Mirage, Phantom Liberty - plus the backlog! And anything else ive forgotten like Alan Wake
@lightningbolt79 Well it seems it just depends on tastes then, Paper mario looked great but just like this SoP most games shown during that direct we already knew about, Mario vs Donkey Kong isn't a new game, neither is paper mario, another code recollection, tomb raider 1-3 or luigis mansion 2, there's a lot of remasters and HD ports. Then there was a lot of indies and yet even more Mario kart dlc which seems to be in every direct they do. No where near the level of the last Nintendo Direct.
There was some bad moments for me personally, im not a Roblox fan and Baby Steps didn't need to be shown lol. Still the other games held it up for me than I listed and it was short so it's definitely getting a passing grade from me. Sucks I gotta wait til February for Helldivers 2 but maybe i'll learn to hibernate for a few months after Spidey-2 lol. And despite the cringey like interaction in the Helldivers 2 video, it's not fake in a sense that you will need to communicate and those things will happen to you like that. Spidey-2 has me really excited now, that trailer did it for me more than the others. And of course Final Fantasy VII Rebirth looked excellent.
It was a good smaller type SoP, and I'm not even an FF gamer. Far better improvement than the last PS bigger Showcase. Wasn't expecting to see more new Spiderman 2 stuff tonight, it looked so damn sexy and smooth
@thefourfoldroot1
Lol, priceless. I bet he's spitting feathers.
There is no Stellar Blade on PS5
Helldivers delay is a ***** bummer but at least Rebirth looks good
Enjoyed it in the main
Is Stellar Blade vaporware though?
I was expecting a lot more smaller more creative indie games, but there only seemed a few & instead we got big games like Ubisoft's Far Cry: Avatar & FFVII....
Disappointing in that regard
Because PlayStation Studios has lost a lot of its creativity under Jim Ryan only going for blockbuster games & in future all the forthcoming Live Service crap
My favorite part was when they bleeped out the word 'ass' in Ghostbusters and then right away it cut to Resi Evil where the first phrase was "You fuc**rs".
You could tell this presentation was put together in a few hours.
Resi 4 VR looked cool. The Helldivers mic speak was cringe. It made the game look worse than it probably is. Avatar's world looked colorful and fun. Spidey did look like a really fun game but everyone knows about that. I think FF7 will turn off a good many people - just like 16 did. Too much baggage with FF7.
Not as bad as I thought it would be - but nothing special either. okay.
They announced nothing that I cared about.
@PixelDragon he has. Probably good for him, heβs likely having a meltdown over it so it wouldnt have been pretty π
They needed a SOP for this? Lol that was horrible π€£
For me it was poor. Spidey two is the only thing that grabbed me, and I already knew about it obviously.
@UltimateOtaku91
So you hated everything about the Nintendo Direct? Interesting. Anyone would think you don't like games at all...
It was fine I guess. Helldivers looks great, SM2 obviously looks amazing but really don't need to see more, though the controllers look neat we already have 10 of em , everything else wasn't for me. Maybe a 6/10.
@PixelDragon I didn't hate everything I didn't say that, I was pointing out why it's the worst one I've seen but it was still a 7/10 because of lack of new games hence why I rated this SoP and the Direct the same.
@PixelDragon That comment isn't necessary. The post you replied to is nothing like "hating" everything about the direct.
Twas a good one for sure. Not great, but good.
FFVII looks incredible and there were a few other gems too. I wanna see more of Ghost Runner 2 and Hell Divers 2!
@UltimateOtaku91
I know, but to say people are "acting like they don't like games" because they weren't blown away by the State of play, while then posting how unimpressed your were by the Nintendo Direct reeks of hypocrisy. That was my point. You can't accuse others of one thing then go on to do exactly the same thing.
Gamers want different things from their games. Accept it.
I voted terrible because for me, it was. I don't have no interest in any of the games shown and I don't understand why people commenting expect everyone to like the same games. People are arguing over personal opinions rather than just accepting that different people like different games.
With all of these game showcases, I care about only two things. New game reveals and gameplay reveals. So from that perspective, the Nintendo show was a whole lot better. Once I know I'm interested in a game, I definitely don't need 10 more trailers for it.
@PixelDragon @NinjaNicky I liked things from both shows. Sorry if I came across that way. But it is true some people just canβt be pleased.
@NinjaNicky
Exactly.
I'm not into Marvel, can't stand Avatar and I didn't like the first FFVII remake outing. Everything else was just 'meh'.
But I'm not about to jump on anyone who DOES like those IPs.
@PixelDragon There's a difference between not being blown away to commenting towards literally every game shown saying its rubbish. I wasn't blown away by the driect or this but I wouldnt say the games shown are rubbish, far from it.
@UltimateOtaku91 Don"t expect any new games until Switch 2 comes. Expect more Remakes and Remasters.
@PixelDragon Honestly, I feel like you're not arguing in good faith here. UltimateOtaku91 didn't say people are acting like they don't like games because they weren't blown away by it, they said that about people who post negative comments on every single video in the live chat. There's a big difference, there's no hypocrisy there. They did not do exactly the same thing at all.
@mac_da_man @PixelDragon ...and its not just him having a meltdown at the moment π someone who 'left' has written more comments since 'leaving' than before they 'left' lol
@PixelDragon Also my comment was a dig towards certain people who literally put hate comments towards everything on here, not just the SoP, it wasn't aimed at everyone who didn't like the show. They know who they are.
@UltimateOtaku91
Yes, but it depends on what you mean by rubbish? If you're talking about the developer skill and talent poured into say the Spiderman games then no, they're not rubbish as pieces of art, (if we can call it that), but as someone who has zero interest in Marvel, DC, or many other western comics then yeah, for me Spiderman is a load of flying around, spandex wearing rubbish. Doesn't interest me one iota.
@Loamy
Blueliving. The stealth Xbro and defender of EP13.
Yeah, I saw that.
Don't engage with the site any more, but I do still like to read some of the articles and comments.
@Shepherd_Tallon The negativity of push is toxic and simply breeds more of the same. The articles here set the tone and push has the audience its cultivated for sure.
There are still some people here who enjoy gaming though. I doubt this show 'blew anyone away' but I found plenty there to look forward too, and genuinely didnt see the tales of arise dlc coming, so that was a pleasent suprise.
@PixelDragon I liked the first Spiderman game then played Miles because it was free on PSplus and this one looks basically identical so I'm not interested, I didn't like the Avatar movies but thought I'd see what the games like but making it 1st person put me right off. The movement and graphics looks like a Far Cry game with a new skin and FF has never appealed to me.
@PixelDragon I respect that's your opinion and my comments weren't aimed at you, let's just say that with every single SoP or showcase, or any playstation related hardware news or ps plus updates I already know who's going to put hate comments before reading the comments.
@Titntin Honestly, Push is one of the less toxic sites out there π¬
@UltimateOtaku91
Okay, fair enough. We'll move on. No harm done.
Of course you're always going to get the haters for haters sake, but that's just gaming sites for you.
@Loamy never understood the whole Im leaving thing. Especially when you actually dont leave π
@PixelDragon There's only so much patronising and passive-aggressiveness people can take from certain individuals it seems π€· don't know how the people calling it out end up being the 'bad guys' but here we are.
@tthoc1985 Well the Princess Peach game is new and they have two new games coming next month, I still think there's another year and half of the switch life cycle so I'd expect one more heavy hitter coming, maybe Metroid Prime 4.
@Loamy
"Push is one of the less toxic sites out there"
I agree, but a lot of that comes down to moderation.
The moderation is the complete opposite to EG. I'm afraid to fart on here most of the time for fear of having having comments removed. lol
@Loamy Good job I dont go far then! π Im just from an age where people weren't so quick to dismiss and felt so entitled..
I guess an old guy not getting the current generation is hardly news..
@mac_da_man
At least I had the common decency to be banned from EG for no reason at all!
Joking aside I was on bloody holiday at the time. Didn't post for a week, came back and 'boom!', account banned.
@Titntin Well I'm 30 (the middle ground) and tend to view the gaming news and showcases we get in a positive light for the most part. Gaming is a saviour for me so I'd rather not moan about it online for moanings sake. I'm here to enjoy my hobby.
As for some of the people and 'journalists' though... I'll call out the BS I have to sift through in the hate-articles and comments π
Removed - discussing moderation
@Loamy Im not quite twice your age, but only a year off. Take the time to enjoy it mate, the next 30 go much quicker than you will believe! Maybe I shouldnt have zpent so many hundreds of hours playing games?
Nah... Thats been the best bit π
@Ralizah I didn't like the first one at all. Far too much of a corridor sim. But this looks excellent.
@NinjaNicky
Bizarre.
One thing that I REALLY like about this place is the block option. A great tool for dealing with those who follow you around and comment on your every single post.
I'd say it was ok at best judging from the announcements as I had no intention of watching it after it was said the focus would be on everything but themselves again. Odd that it was supposed to be indie and 3rd party only, yet two 1st party titles showed up and there was nothing from the one indie game they are publishing.
The fact that Stellar Blade continues to make as much of an appearance as PlayStation first party titles as a whole is quite disappointing as that looks like it could be really good, but we have no idea what's going on with it. We got a name change this year in a trailer, but that's it.
A release date for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, my most anticipated game on any platform, was really the only saving grace for this SoP. I could care less about another Spider-Man 2 trailer as I've had that pre-ordered for months. The RE4 DLC is nice and I will get that, but otherwise this was just mediocre at best on the strength of two or three things.
If youβre a hardcore FF and Spider-Man fan you were happy,everyone else will say this show was mediocre at best.
@Rob_230 Ah stop π Thinking about that backlog is giving me anxiety
It was ok.word up son
@PixelDragon πRight there with ya. Although I will always be interested in indies. That's where the majority of originality and innovation lies. AAA's have lost all appeal for me.
@playstation1995
I love that you finish every comment with 'word up son'. lol
Thought it was odd at first, but now I know I would miss it if you stopped.
word up son.
All they did was spend 25 minutes reannouncing games
@TadGhostal
Indies do deliver more regularly, but even that is a minefield full of utter crud. The AAA industry has, for me at least, become increasingly stale. I have bought a few at full price over the last few years, however with the exception of Elden Ring I've come to regret each purchase. Now I just wait until the price hits below Β£20 before even considering it. Even up coming games that have piqued my interest, like Star Wars Outlaws, for example, won't find its way into my catalogue before it hits that price point.
So far 32% didnβt like it, 42% thought it was okay/good, 17% liked it and 9% are smoking crack.
@lacerz
At least crack doesn't disappoint...
Felt like it could have been Twitter announcements but the new resident evil 4 stuff looks so good
@UltimateOtaku91 You don't think Switch 2 coming next year?
@tthoc1985 Nah, I'm thinking February/March 2025. Also Splatoon 3 has two years of support which ends late 2024 so I think it will launch after that atleast.
Removed - off-topic
@UltimateOtaku91 I'd agree it was fair-to-middling; some good trailers, but if you're not into FF7 and you've seen enough SM2, then there wasn't a lot in there. I know lots of people will see a lot they did like - I just think Sony's looking very dependent on third parties. And wouldn't this have been the best chance to show why we need to pay so much extra for PS+? Lots of missed chances - but overall, wasn't as meh as the last one. Or are we just getting used to it?
It was a good show
The May showcase still leaves a bad taste tho and sony needs to do right by its loyal community and keep on the hype train and building a strong awareness of its future road map and coming titles. There is nothing wrong with a cgi trailer that can be put together in days (just look at Knights of Republic remake/star wars eclipse)
@PixelDragon Totally agree - I think a combination of a lot of meh games, buggy as hell games, and the introduction of a subscription service has definitely stopped me buying as many games - oh, that and there isn't that many Sony 1st party coming out to actually buy. Even if SM2 is fantastic (the first two were), it's still only one game, and only the second real 1st party PS5 exclusive (Demon Souls and Returnal were strictly second/third party at the time of release). Why is Insomniac the only devs that are getting on with it?
It was okay. FF7 looks fantastic! Spider-Man 2 looks great! But I'm so curious what is going on with Stellar Blade at this point though. It looked so promising in the last trailer we saw for it but it has been almost complete radio silence which is pretty concerning considering it was supposed to release this year.
I heard about the show second hand, so I missed the expectation setting Sony tried to make for it. I hated it at first but have soften a little bit since I found out they tried to tell me to expect less. Still not good though.
As someone who has been struggling to get the appetite to finish FF7 remake, the big reveal being part 2 was kind of a gut punch.
Removed - off-topic
Seems I'm not longer in Sony's demographic because I barely found any of these games interesting at all.
Shame helldivers 2 isnβt a ps plus game

@UltimateOtaku91 "You can tell by certain people's comments (and not just on this article) that they just like to post negative comments non stop for the fun of it."
I hope you're self aware enough to know you're part of the other extreme. Any negative stuff Sony does (like charging $80 for accessing your freaking internet) you (and about 3 others) immediately go into defense mode.
The people who bash PlayStation no matter what are balanced out by the people that defend PlayStation no matter what π€·
Starfield is phenomenal. I suggest moving on from the state of play debacle and play the game.
it was poor. but this isn't entirely a sony problem anymore... it is an issue with the AAA industry at large and across all the platforms. this industry has become complacent and predictable. even quality titles, while very polished and enjoyable, rarely exude a sense of wonder or subvert expectations in a meaningful way. i suppose the "special" games are becoming harder to find these days... maybe a couple a year if we are lucky. as for those who are still very young and only getting into gaming now, then this is your golden age perhaps and is equivalent to the 90s through the 2000s for us older people haha.
Poor. I saw more interesting third party Playstation games in Nintendo's show.
@JSnow2 I count 4 this yr but ok
@ArmoredMore were you expecting that?
It was ok.
Compared to the last SOP it might as well be Citizen Kane.
Resi 4 spiderman 2 tales of arise dlc and the big one being ff7 rebirth let's go
@playstation1995
βNo no no. Itβs a Pimp Named Slickback. Itβs like a Tribe Called Quest you say the whole thing.β
This was shockingly good given my extremely low expectations. FF7 Rebirth, Spider-Man 2, Helldivers 2, and Baby Steps. Good stuff.
It was meh, only Spider-Man 2 news got me smiling. DLC for RE4 Remake & Tales of Arise also looked nice.
I think from what Sony said the state of play it was pretty much more what I expected since I came with low expectations.
Glad I get to play Honkai on console soon and FF7 Rebirth is looking good! February is super stacked for me so that keeps me happy.
But it doesn't justify the lack of communication from Sony personally with what's going on with Stellar Blade as well as Rise of Ronin as well as lack of PS1/PSP classic games as well as the state of the PS2 emulator on PSN.
Not for me, personally. I'll be playing more older games in the coming weeks.. and, of course, the brand new Starfield on Xbox. Microsoft has surprised me again and again these last few months while Sony has just been... meh. Really wish they would bring back Japan Studios and develop some platformers, puzzles or original racing games.. but alas, that seems like a pipe dream :/. Oh well, plenty of older PS4 titles to play haha. If it wasn't for that backwards compatibility I would've sold my PS5 a long time ago..
@UltimateOtaku91 when SoP is criticized, you claim they are critizing it for the sake of negativity but it's all good when you criticize Nintendo Direct.
@cburg You spelt Final Fantasy 16 wrong.
Very well curated show with good pacing. Obviously no surprises, but not surprising if a show is announced as a no-surprise show. In my opinion the opening was very funny, since it depicted half the reactions to this sop.
Personally, there was nothing in there that would change my mind. The only flat game of those I will likely play is ff7 (looks awesome) but I don't really need a trailer for that (or maybe I needed a reminder?). Same for the Re4 VR mode. Ghostbusters still does not pique my interest. Presumably I would play most of the other games if any of those added a VR mode. But that is not going to happen.
Anyway I am not disappointed by this sop. I would call it certainly good if not very good, because of the pacing, despite not containing any enticing, new announcements.
@Mauzuri 100% this!
Jim Ryan is ruining PlayStation
First he turned them into safe bets blockbusters only, now he's turning them into a live service company
@MeatyVeg
Wait, is all of this his doing?? Was he also the one that ordered the closure of Japan Studio? :/
Seemed strange to promote it as an indie 3rd party state of play and then show only 1 indie game. (was hoping for at least Vampire Survivors release date). It does seem they have given up on PSVR 2 loved my PSVR 1 but with no backwards compatability they have not given me one reason to get PSVR 2. Why they decided to do the voice chat thing for Hell Divers I will never know that never works as no group ever talks like that playing games. Was nice to see FFVII R2 so that made the show ok for me.
@cburg I wouldnβt say phenomenal, good but certainly not phenomenal
Loved it, new Vanillaware game and an expansion for Tales of Arise! I would've been more than sated with just those two so the FF7 Rebirth trailer with a release date was a MUHASSIVE cherry on top.
Not everything in a showcase has to be for me, but this gave me enough.
edit - wait, was the Vanillaware game in this or the Ninty Direct? Either way there's more games for meeeeee on everything!]
It was an ok State of Play given the expectations set beforehand (only previously announced games, focus on 3rd party and indie) but ranked it good because of the FFVII Rebirth trailer.
It seems to be a reflection of the games industry in general. It's become so sterile and stagnant that one of the mentioned items here is DLC for a remake of a game. Does no one else see that as depressing? Two of the four items listed, in fact, are remakes or reboots. I mean, c'mon, is innovation just plain dead?
@Mythologue Nintendo's was no different. people falling all over themselves to pay full price on old games with barely any updates. I find it all sickening.
We are going through another 2012 but this time I think developers are more prepared for gamer backlash.
I was down on it when I heard it had only indie and third party games but I very much enjoyed it. FF7 looked stunning and Spider-Man 2 was epic.
@OrtadragoonX. The boondocks π haha.thats one of the greatest cartoon of all times.kat Williams plays a pimp named slickback on the boondocks really good haha.a tribe called quest are one of the greatest rap groups ever.check the rhyme is one of the best rap songs and video ever.word up son
@PixelDragon. Onyx represents my borough the legendary queens new york.i got that album also.its one of the greatest hip hop albums ever.and one of the greatest rap groups ever.old school rap music is the best.and yes onyx is still making new music.and they music are good.word up son
When searching for the State of Play when I got home yesterday I found what I thought were the usual complainers and detractors bemoaning this particular outing for Sony. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that some of these videos at two, three, or FIVE years old.
Now I have come to a few conclusions:
1) Sony sucks at these presentations (a little)
2) PS fans are never satisfied (sort of)
3) It's been FIVE years since we have gotten any good announcements (doubtful)
4) It is profitable for YouTubers (and websites) to produce negative content. (probably)
Anyway, I thought the thing was a thing and I saw stuff that was good for me and stuff that didn't click. But I can tell you one thing for sure. I am either going to have to wrestle my Wife to get my Switch back or buy a second one because the Princess Peach costume game Showtime! was FIRE!!!
@Mythologue
Innovation is not dead, but the majority of the people who own the consoles these days are not buying games for the innovation they are buying for COD and FIFA. All those games do is innovate more clever ways of taking your money.
My expectations were low, and it failed to even meet them.
@PCPS4XB yes. since the first one was on ps plus, yes I was expecting that
It was good...RE4 dlc is a highlight for me. Also pretty surprising that SM2 and Helldivers2 showed up, didn't expect it. Biggest let down personally is no update on Silent Hill 2 remake, I'd like to see some gameplay and release date
My expectations were low but it was a decent show even if there wasnβt a lot for me personally. But across all formats itβs been a good year and there are a lot of very promising games to come.
I said it was excellent because personally speaking I got a trio of excellent trailers I got rebirth tales of arise and separate ways so i am very very happy
Why does any company think having their devs incredibly awkwardly play out a squad mission in their game make a good marketing clip?
Gonna go with terrible. It start off on the worst leg imaginable and who ever that woman was at the start. I hope they never bring her back. I felt like I was listening to an HR person telling me how great DE&I is. HR people suck. Anyway, the event starting with the Goat Simulator or Human Dipshit Simulator almost had me turn the damned thing off to come back later when all the trailers were up. Sony should never start a State of Play like that again.
That being said once we got over that hump we were greated with basically trailers for games we knew about. Helldivers 2 looks awesome, it also looked awesome when they first showed it off. Spiderman 2 looks good, but I can't say I'm super excited about the game and its kind of just been floating there as we wait for the game to finally release. Even if i was excited, I'm interested in what I get to play after Spider Man 2. The same goes for FF7 Rebirth. Don't get me wrong my head exploded with that trailer and had me spamming squares webiste hoping the CE would pop up for preorder. Again i came away with this sense of "yes we know". I can't really give Sony credit for something I've been waiting for since 2019. Honestly do not care about Avatar 2, I'd be happy if I never play another Ubisoft game ever again.
So what did this need? New games. What the hell is Sony working on after Spider Man 2? Sony is in silent running as we wait to hear what they have planned for 2024. Where is my FF17 announcement? Would have been a nice surprise if Tales of Arise was getting more than 20 hour DLC content. Kind of over DLC, I just ignore it now. Is this where Infamous Second Son 2 is announced? Ghost of Tsushima 2 or what ever its called? Ghost of Some Other Island? Hell I'd have been happy with another Astrobot game, been dying for a sequel to our favorite pack in freebie that builds on that same concept.
It was ho hum. I'd have to say its execution was bad. A lot of it steers back to how it started. I feel sorry for that poor woman being sent out like a lamb to slaughter.
The show was very great in my opinion.
It definitely exceeded my expectations.
I feel a little pity (I am actually laughing and looking slightly down at the negativity, but if I didn't hide the truth in this magical parenthesis it would get moderated away) for those who were let down.
Baby Steps were very funny. I can see people laughing together and playing this while having beers. The protagonist will probably give off an uncanny feeling to certain gamers (in here).
Re: 4 VR is the innovation people are critizing the show for being devoid off. They are honing their craftsmanship and building upon what they've learnt so far.
Spidey has the critics in awe. Well deserved.
Helldivers were unfortunately marred by the fake team chat. Especially the woman in the end screaming they were being beaten and need a strategy, then they push a button and the monster goes boomπ€¦ββοΈ
Rebirth looked great as well π
It was pretty good. I wanna play Spider-Man 2 and FFVII Rebirth so much!
@ArmoredMore oh ok I hear ya. But it does make sense, this looks like a much bigger game and bigger budget.
@JSnow2 Is it realistic to think you will get a several 100 million releases a year?
