Re: Microsoft Buys Call of Duty Publisher Activision Blizzard

AinsleyE

Yeah, this makes me want an Xbox even less. Last gen Xbox had nothing, so what do they do? Instead of investing in new studios, just buy the rights to the biggest franchises in the world so you are forced to buy their console if you don't want to play on PC. Acquisitions of this size are f-ing disgusting in all forms of business. It doesn't matter if it's Microsoft or Sony, it makes me sick. If this carries on I can see myself just stop playing games altogether. What a joke.

@Milt The majority of people buying CoD are people that aren't into gaming. Most people don't know about the Activision Blizzard stuff. I haven't seen it being talked about on the TV and the only time it's reported by the main news outlets is via online articles. Hell, a lot of gaming news sites don't report on it. I haven't seen an article here about it for a while. You're lucky to get a paragraph about it right at the end of a post. But even if people do know, the majority don't care. It's sad but true.

Re: Mass Effect Legendary Edition Sales 'Well Above' Expectations, Says EA

@Shepherd_Tallon I get that. I thought the game handled its original characters well, but the ME2 characters' stories left a lot to be desired for me personally (apart from Mordin obviously!). And I was pretty invested in the Reaper plot since the beginning, the writing in ME1 is so damn good, it's hard not to care. So when ME3 came along and they suddenly discover plans for The Crucible, it felt like a cheap throughline for the main story to follow. Still, if someone said 3 was their favourite in the trilogy I wouldn't argue with them, there are a lot of great moments. For me, it's a toss between 1 and 2. I like the writing and soundtrack more in 1 but the characters more in 2.

@Shepherd_Tallon I remember not liking ME3 the first time around because Bioware overhyped the choices from the previous games and how they tie into the endings you get. Now I'm not a teenager, I realise how ridiculous it would be to pull that stuff off. I think they should have dampened people's expectations but playing through ME3 now, knowing what I'm actually getting, I still think it's the weakest in the trilogy but it's a good conclusion to one of the best trilogies out there.

I hope this means a Dragon Age Legendary Edition is on the cards to fill in the gap before the release of Dragon Age 4. I also hope that the success of the release makes them realise not every game needs to have massive open worlds filled with fetch quests, cough Inquistuion/Andromeda cough. Give me a DA:O or ME2 style hub areas and I'll be happy!

Re: Future Yakuza Games Will Have Turn-Based Combat, Not Action

AinsleyE

I'm happy people like the turn-based combat but I found it to be the weakest part of 7 by far. It's so boring, and after spending over a decade improving the action gameplay, it seems bizarre that we might only get that once every other year if they cycle between Yakuza and Judgment. I hope they at least change it up a bit when 8 is released. Moving the character so they don't run into the wall every time would be nice...

Re: Soapbox: Games As a Service Should Be Embraced, Not Misunderstood

I absolutely disagree with this on so many levels. The problem I have with the GaaS model is that it feels like an excuse to release an unfinished game, then add features and content that was meant to be in it, later, with future updates, and people will praise them for continuing to support the game.

The list of games you think are GaaS is laughable. The Witcher 3 was not a GaaS. Just because it had a steady stream of mini free dlcs for a few months doesn't make it a GaaS. It was a complete game. By your definition, a game could have 2 paid for expansion packs and they are now a GaaS, even though a GaaS is something that relies on it being updated.

The one purposes for a GaaS is recurring consumer spending whilst keeping costs down by drip-feeding content and making a big update every 3-4 months. Sell skins and emotes which will take a 3D artist or animator a couple of days at most to make.

When a game developer/publisher says it's a "live" game, it means we need to rush a game out, we'll fix it later and then not worry about releasing a new game for a few years, not because we are constantly updating our current game, more because we can milk people with boosters and cosmetics.

You need to be careful, if you stretch any more than you already are, you'll throw your back out.

Re: Yakuza: Like a Dragon PS5 Upgrade Confirmed, Will 'Release at a Later Date'

AinsleyE

Is this a timed next-gen exclusive though? If you check their twitter banner, it says the next-gen release for both XSX and PS5 will be soon while this gen is November. Since November is the likely month of the next-gen releases, it sounds more like the same thing CD Projekt is doing with Cyberpunk, where the port is still being worked on and will release next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsft pays for a timed port but I also wouldn't be surprised if it's just bad phrasing from Sega.
