Re: Nintendo Is Raising the Price of Games with Switch 2

ilyn

I very rarely buy games brand new as like most I have a huge backlog and fomo doesn't really bother me. I think the last two games I got day 1 where FF16 and Elden Ring, and I got them on disc to get a better price.

What I will say is that some companies just seem far more greedy. I picked up Elden Ring Day 1 on disc for £40, the Dark souls trilogy collection on PS4 for £35. When games like those are so cheap it does make me question some of the £70 releases.

Re: Final Fantasy 9 Teases 'Various Projects' to Commemorate 25th Anniversary

ilyn

Great game but when I replyed it recently it was very much a case of rose tinted nostalgia helping me remember the game as being far bigger and better than it actually was. In my head the world map was huge, but on a replay you realise how its pretty much a straight line game until you reach the BM Village, the map just tricks you to make it feel bigger.

Still a solid entry but not one I would play again, at least not any time soon.

Re: Ubisoft Spins Off Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six into New Subsidiary with Tencent

ilyn

Ubisoft have made plenty of blunders but I would love to know what effect, if any, sub services have on the way the games industry is going. just looking at AC Shadows as an example, you can buy the game for £70 or pay £14.99 and blast through it then cancel your sub.

I get there will be a arguement to be made that more people might try it on the than would buy it, but I can't help but think that subs are just ruining the industry.

Re: Druckmann on The Last of Us HBO Story Outpacing the Games: 'I Leave Nothing on the Line'

ilyn

TV show endings rarely land as well , especially if the subject matter is grittier as people get too invested in the characters. If the show did well then people are left wanting more. If the main characters die then it closes the door, if they all survives then it feels a bit toothless.

As for TLoU I thought both endings where great, sure the second game is a feel bad ending, but it's not a bad ending. Ellie made a series of bad choices and she knew they where bad choices. She spends the game pointing out that Joel also made bad choices and had enemies but continues that cycle in anger. The final fight where Abby has taken on the role of Joel by giving her life to save Levs, is her eye opening moment that it's all pointless and as a result she just breakdown on the beach instead. It's a hard ending, but it fits the story imo.

Re: The Witcher Dev on a Hiring Spree as Various New PS5 Projects Progress

ilyn

@breakneck PC shoud always sell more overtime as its a much bigger audience. Witcher 3 sold better on consoles at the start but PC overtook within the year. Also you have to factor in the disastrous launch that Cyberpunk had on consoles. The game was barely playable on anything but PC until the 2.0 overhaul.

Aside from that those sort of games always play better on PC imo simply due to mods. I played Witcher 3 with Weighless Items and Auto Apply Weapon Oil mods because it just made the game much more enjoyable overall by removing the tedious menu guff.

Re: Xbox Is Absolutely Dominating PS5's Pre-Order Charts

ilyn

@Nakatomi_Uk At a push they may branch out to Nintendo if they can get some older games on the Switch 2, but in reality they will never need to branch out to XB as its a shrinking market that simply might not be worth the dev cost by the time the prime is launched.

Re: Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on Bloodborne, 10 Years Later?

ilyn

@Repo_Dog Same here, I recently gave Sekiro a go and have got pretty far but I find there is very little to like about the game. Got up to Owl (Father) / Divine Dragon and put it down. Its hands down the worst game FS have done and I have no idea how it won GOTY as that must have been a very weak year overall.

Re: Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on Bloodborne, 10 Years Later?

ilyn

Such an incredible game, Its one of the reasons why sony exclusives have the reputation they do. I would love it to get the full Bluepoint treatment, but a 60fps patch would be perfect also.

Just please don't make me fight Chalice Rom again, my god he was rage inducing in a tiny arena. Main Rom is barely a boss as you really have to work hard to die there, Chalice Rom on the other hand is pure pain.

Re: Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 Bites an ESRB Rating

ilyn

Fully expecting this to tank pretty hard. Bloodlines 1 was great but this just seems to lack so much. Only 4 clans is a huge downside especially when they have picked the standard Fighter, Mage, Thief clans for 3 of them.

@Hyena_socks The entire World of Darkness is such a good setting but they seem unable to use it to its full potential. I wish they would revisit the old Hunter games as they were pretty good fun. Or just give us a full modern day remake of VTM: Redemption.

Re: God of War Fans Gutted with Free 20th Anniversary Goodies

ilyn

This notion of expecting freebies just because you bought a game 10 / 20 years a go is utterly ridiculous. I actually started Ragnarok a few days ago and seeing the free mogs was really impressed as they could have just not bothered at all.

Can you imagine if it applied in other aspects of lfe. I'm not far of 10 years in my house, does someone have to give me a free extension or garden makeover to celebrate.

Re: The Future of the Baldur's Gate Series Will Soon Be Revealed

ilyn

Personally I owuld rather they leave Baldurs Gate unless they have a proper story to tell. BG3 managed to be its own story whilst still linking back to BG1+2 via the Bhaalspawn plot. If the want to do something then just spin up another game in the D&D universe as there is endless scope without ruining the pedigree of BG.

Also there are some takes in these comments, comparing BG3 to a mobile game is just wild 😂

Re: PS5 Console Exclusive Star Wars Game Is Still Alive Allegedly

ilyn

@tameshiyaku I've only played Fallen Order out of those but found it to be lackluster over all. The map was poor, the enemies repetative, the collectibles pointless etc. I will give Survivor a go, and hopefully they made the sequel better but I much prefered The Force Unleashed games as they just felt more fun.

That said they really need to fully remake the original Dark Forces / Jedi Knight games as they where peak Star Wars.

Re: Ubisoft Shareholder Irate Over French Firm's Failure to Disclose IP Acquisition Discussions with Microsoft, EA, and Others

ilyn

Everyone sits on IPs, because they pretty much have to. You don't want to sell the IP as its an asset and money in the bank for a later date. At the same time if companies use all these IPs then they get accused of milking a franchise. Horizon gets it and they have only released 2 mainline games in 7 years with 2 spinoffs. Whilst the older IPs are just not guarenteed to do great outside of remasters as it means rebooting.

Its just classic gamer mentality to be unhappy either way

Re: PS6 Could Be the Only High-End Next-Gen Console, As New Xbox Touted to Be a 'PC in Essence'

ilyn

@Fiendish-Beaver I think the utopia of everything on one device is still a pipe dream. Smart phones are the example of they can do everything but they don't excel at any of it. You can have all the microsft office apps on there but aside from emails they are kind of impractical. You can high end game on them but without a controller you get the same problem. You can take photos but for the price of modern phones anyone who likes photos would be better off buying a dslr.

To me they are the handy jack of all trades to carry around, but like the saying master of none, and I feel a hybrid device would end up much the same. You might as well just buy a laptop and HDMI cable.

Re: Intergalactic PS5 Game All About Faith, Religion, and 'Being Lonely'

ilyn

Its amazing how people can tell so much about a future game based on two words. People should at least be honest and say they are bigots and would rather games only exist to massage their fragility.

Naughty Dog don't miss so I will play this and I fully expect it to be a good game, enough to give them the benefit of the doubt at the very least.

Re: PS6 Could Be the Only High-End Next-Gen Console, As New Xbox Touted to Be a 'PC in Essence'

ilyn

@themightyant I think it will be closer to a PC, But at the same time still not a PC. If they had steam, which is not confirmed, then games would still require work. A flag would likely need to be enabled for compatibility, much like the deck does currently. So as I see it they could just stop short of that final step.

However I still don't think it will be a full PC under your TV because at that point Xbox brand has very little value. You would be better just going to a custom builder like Scan and getting a better machine for your living room, with a much better warrenty and the ability to upgrade in future.

Re: Rumour: Next-Gen Xbox a 'PC in Essence' - What Would That Mean for PlayStation?

ilyn

@LogicStrikesAgain Yeah PC games are cheaper in general and that why myself and other have been highly sceptical of this PC / Console hybrid talk for a while. Steam would pretty quickly make their own store obselete and also introduce a whole host of issues that PC games have.

I am currently replaying the Borderlands games and Borderlands 2 on Steam is wonky until you edit some files as it falls over when the resolution is set to higher than is normally allows. The game is only 12 years old but its pretty common for PC games to require these sort of tweaks when they get older or windows get updated so I genuinely do not see how a Windows console would be in any way better than a traditional console.

I still doubt we would ever see a console that can just play windows versions, and if we do It will be a steam machine and not a Xbox

@GymratAmarillo Yup, I have never understood why people think Sony can't just stop a silly workaround if they want. If they don't want the games on the competition it will simply not happen.

Re: Death Stranding 2 PS5 Release Date Set for 26th June

ilyn

@Jireland92 Basing games on trophies is a really bad metric, because the reality is that casuals often never finish games, and casual are the bulk of the market.

For example only 47% finished the last mission in GTA V (on PS3). So should we say that game didn't resonate with people and therefore GTA VI will get less sales than it. Most casuals will simply get distracted by the new thing and don't care enough to think twice about it.

Re: 15 Years Ago, Square Enix Released the Most Divisive Final Fantasy Game

ilyn

I really enjoyed FFXIII when I played it back in the day. It was far better than FFXII which is one of the worst in the series imo. The battle system still holds up as a great adaptation of the ATB system, and i loved the mechanical take on the eidelons. I get that people felt it was linear but having replayed the earlier games it was no more linear, I think it just suffered for areas being corridors. The older games just did a better job of masking the corridors by putting you on a world map where each transition was point A to point B.

FFXIII-2 really lost me however, the charcters where simply not as interesting and the story got wierd. Mainly I missed Snow and felt it made no sense for him to hunt his fiance for an entire game and then just wander off without her for the sequel.

Would really like a remastered collection of all 3 games for current gen tho.

Re: This Trailer for HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 May Be An All-Time Great

ilyn

@IOI Yup I reckon we will see it early, but I think we will get more flashbacks / they will split them up, to keep the emotion for him running high.

For S4 I wonder if it would be more a case of S3 with a mid season break for the final 6 episodes. I think if they expand the journey / escape timeskip then 6 episodes would be a good conclusion.

Re: Ex-Xbox Boss Says Console War Has Lost Its 'Feistiness' as Microsoft Goes Multiformat

ilyn

@sanderson72 On the surface it seems mad, but in reality it was their only option. They had already fallen so far behind that a comeback would have taken a miracle. Their output in recent years has come on leaps and bounds and its still having no impact. Outside of America Xbox just isn't that important so swapping to a multiplatorm model simply makes the most sense.

Re: 'Don't Bet' on The Last of Us 3, Warns Neil Druckmann

ilyn

I only recently played TLoU pt 2, as I had just never got around to it previously and wanted to experience the game ahead of the show. Personally I felt the game was great, and easy holds its own against the first game.

Joel's ending made perfect sense as he had led a pretty terrible life inbetween Sarah and Jackson. In Pt1 he even mentions he has been on both sides of the fake holdup. In Pt 2 Ellie even acknowledges that it could have been anyone as he wronged a lot of people. Jackson softened his edges, he just didn't see it coming.

As for Abby I though her character was great. It was a masterstroke how you play as ellie going full rampage mode where you see all the Seattle characters from her perspective and you only ever see negative Abby. Then they flip it and you realise that Abby's group are literally no different from the Jackson group. Yes its hard being shown that Abby is just as popular as Ellie by her friends, but thats the point. Its not meant to be easy, its meant to be real. They are reflection of one another.

As for the ending it was great imo. Abby's journey made her become Joel, she came to realise that Lev was the only thing that mattered. Ellie came to realise that she didn't want the thing she had been chasing the entire time, and it cost her everything.

I would like a Pt 3 set a few years later again and it be the redemption arc to the whole story. They could easily riff on things like Ellie going nomad to be by herself / something happens to Dina & JJ / Abby & Lev found more fireflies and possibly a cure that won't kill Ellie.

Re: The Sinking City 2 Teases PS5 Glow Up as Kickstarter Goes Live

ilyn

The original was fine, the main mission had an alright story, but the side content was extremely tedious and had very little going for it. My biggest gripe is that the monsters didn't feel very lovecraftian compared to the setting. The characters and the setting nailed the lovecraft vibe, but the monsters just felt like generic creepies. I would love to see them include far more creatures to really up the variety.

Re: PS2, the Most Popular Console Ever, Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary

ilyn

@nomither6 The PS3 was great but I think I would have to rate it differently depending on if it was the launch model or the later model. The launch one was so much better due to the inclusion of full backwards compatability which sadly got removed along the way.

I still liked the new one I got after my original died, but it was just a bit lacking in comparison. Also its the only PS i ever had die and both my PS3s died

Re: Could the Next Xbox Get a Head Start on PS6?

ilyn

@Fiendish-Beaver with a truly next generation console, than a minimal step up with a mid-generation refresh, a step that many think that Sony should also have done considering the pretty minimal improvement of the Pro over the PS5

But if this rumour is to be believed and Dev kits are already out there being worked on, then the Prme / NeXt will barely be a step up over the pro. So surely they also need to wait longer.

@rjejr the Series S is an albatross around their necks so they should just go all in on a hardcore high end model, let the cheapskates game on PC.

Except gaming PCs will always run at a higher price so they are not cheapskates, and if the Xbox goes hardcore high end with a silly hardcvore pricetag then swapping to PC woud be far more tempting than buying their console. You might not like the SS but without it MS could easily have bowed out this generation.

Re: PS2, the Most Popular Console Ever, Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary

ilyn

It was a great machine and it had one hell of a library

@Member_the_game I rememer the anxiety whenever I used to buy a new console from Game or EB, before online shopping. You would be walking back through town centres to your car just hoping you wouldn't drop the thing, or get robbed as it was obvious what you had 😂

Much different to the PS5 launch day where the driver obviously had a van full of consoles, when I answered the door he just said "happy PS5 day with a huge grin". You could just tell he was so happy for folk that day.
