Completely out of the blue, Sony has announced Ghost of Yotei will release for PS5 on 2nd October 2025. The release date is accompanied by a new trailer, which you can catch above.
The trailer is called The Onryo's List, and it serves as the story setup for the game:
"Sixteen years ago in the heart of Ezo (called Hokkaido in present day), a gang of outlaws known as the Yōtei Six took everything from Atsu. They killed her family and left her for dead, pinned to a burning ginkgo tree outside her home. But Atsu survived. She learned to fight, to kill, and to hunt, and after years away she has returned to her home with a list of six names: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito."
The tale of revenge will see Atsu "avenge her family, armed with the same katana used to pin her to that burning tree all those years ago. But while Atsu’s story begins with vengeance, she’ll find there’s more to her journey than just revenge. As she explores Ezo, Atsu will meet unlikely allies and forge connections that help give her a new sense of purpose."
Pre-orders for the game go live on 2nd May, and there'll be a Digital Deluxe Edition and a physical Collector's Edition to choose from.
The Digital Deluxe Edition contains:
- Digital PS5 game download
- The Snake Armor
- Digital Deluxe Armor Dye

The physical Collector's Edition contains:
- All Digital Deluxe Edition contents (the game itself is a digital copy)
- Ghost Mask
- Sash

BOOM
That’s how we do it! What a year for gaming we have in store, maybe a little inkling of when to expect GTA 6 too given all the shuffling around of other publishers 😉
This is gonna be great, I can’t wait.
Woah! Incredible. I feel like they opted to get ahead of this announcement for the impending GTA6 stuff that will no doubt cast a laaaaaarge shadow on all other games for the remainder of 2025. Can’t wait to play this!!!
Sony just casually dropping a release date for one of its most anticipated games at 1pm on a Wednesday afternoon.
It's so pointless even trying to predict this company these days!
Completely out of nowhere. I was just poop-scrolling through FB and saw the trailer.
WTF! Cannot wait. Although kinda funny it seems to be similar to Naoes story in AC: Shadows
Random timing, wonder if that rumored event is cancelled or if they want the release date out to lead into a deeper dive state of play
N.i.c.e. Sony stealth drop the ghost of yotei releases date trailer.like agent 47.sam fisher.corvo attono.john cooper.word up son
Looks frigging stunning.
Looks bloody amazing!!!!
Was kind of hoping it’d be a summer release like the first one, but I’ll take a confirmed release date!
The perfect date for it. Autumn gaming sorted!
I wonder if Sony had contact with Rockstar during some PSSR implementation sessions and now know loosely when GTA is dropping.
Fantastic news! I loved Ghost of Tsushima when I eventually got around to playing the Director’s Cut on PS5. I put nearly ninety hours into the game and picked up the platinum trophy along the way, so I’ll definitely be there for Yotei on day one.
If this were a new Horizon game then GTA6 would release just a few days after
Assassins creed shadow really stood no chance against this beautiful game. This particular game also gives red dead redemption 2 vibes 🤩
Looks more likely that you’ll have a wolf as a companion and probably a very sad death like the horse from the first game 👀
I am absolutely delighted by this news made my week
Just shadow dropping this trailer and a release date the absolute mad lads 😂😂😂. The game looks absolutely sensational my god I'm so excited for this Atsu looks so badass and I LOVE that she's being called The Onryo (my all time favourite horror villain is one of these spirits) it's just perfect
Now thats a good news !!! Damn it is going to be an expensive year
WOO!! I haven’t played the DLC from Tsushima so I started a new playthrough a few days ago to get to that and also in anticipation of this game. I’m playing it on my Pro and while I don’t think it has any upgrade for it, it still looks absolutely incredible. Just traveling the land on horseback and seeing the sunrise over the plains and all the grass swaying in the wind and the pollen and everything. Absolutely breathtaking. I see that and just think how the hell can they make Yotei look even better on a Pro. Sucker Punch is my fave dev so I’m super pumped for this.
Depending on the price, I might have to go for that collectors edition. I still need to at least get that mask from GoT someday. But it’s so expensive online.
October can't come soon enough, looks incredible.
Sony woke up and chose chaos.
One of the most definite buys for me ever. I will be counting down the days. So that’s exactly 162 long days from today!
So if you want the collectors edition and a physical copy, you technically have to buy two versions?
You’d think Sony would realise that most people who desire collectible extras also desire the disc.
Honestly, as annoying as some people may find Sony keeping everyone in the dark, sometimes I lowkey kinda prefer it😅.
Love having a game being announced when it's actually close to releasing, rather then having it be announced 700 years too early 😂
That's a beautiful collectors edition, but these digital only formats are getting a little out of hand. No pun intended.
Damn, what an absolutely packed year. Gta 6, Doom TDA, Mafia and now Ghost of Yotei plus of course Nintendo dropping switch 2.
More hyped for this game than any other this year. GOT was almost a 100% masterpiece in my eyes, and I will be playing through it again before this new game drops.
If this is the expected step up from GoT then we are in for a real treat here.
@FX102A Its always been weird that the collectors versions have digital codes. They should bring back the steel cases with physical for premium as they always used to look amazing compared to standard cases.
Thats more like it, story looks good aswell.
@FX102A I think their logic is this way the digital-only console owners don't get left out, but as you say, a lot of folks who want to buy the extra guffins want the disc too (which I agree with entirely).
HELL YEAH DAY ONE
Not even watching the trailer. I'm already in.
A nice surprise! Well, the fact they casually dropped the information is a surprise. The actual date is no real surprise and right where most of us expected it in the last quarter this year.
Who knew that customers are interested in good quality single player first party experiences…
Playing through original Ghost now so hopefully the sequel will change it up enough to warrant me getting it.
I hope they improve the graphics, the plastic feel to the first one was what put me off just 3 hours into the game
Looks fking amazing but my prediction for the release date was wrong. I thought it would be around July-August but turns out it's a week after Marathon released.
Anyway. The old lady with black lipstick who talked to Atsu looks like an Ainu, which they used to inhabit Hokkaido. They're really good at hunting, fishing, and gathering. So Atsu could be an Ainu too or maybe half Ainu and possibly the reason why her family got slaughtered...
That was insane! The trailer was beautiful, loved that we got to see some gameplay! The character models look incredible. So random that Sony decided to announce a release date all of a sudden, but i’m all for surprises
yeah f*ck gta at this point who cares about rockstar anymore. THIS is how you treat your fans and build up hype
Day 1. GTA VI and this to carry me into 2026
Day one! Let's go!
My poor wallet! 😁
@ShogunRok
So in 2 days we have had a 'shadow drop' of a game that has been repeatedly leaked to the point it was laughable; and Sony casually unveil the release date of arguably their most hyped game of the year with little or no 'fanfare'. Lol.
I'm guessing that not all the ghosts of Tsushima were caught, and a few must have got away? I've not played it, but I have to assume that's how this sequel came to be.
I still have to finish the first one along with my huge backlog!
@Can-You-Believe-Sith
I mean AC Shadows is pretty fantastic too but I'm excited for Yotei as well. No need to pit them against each other. Shadows was great and I'm sure Yotei will be great too!
They can shove their digital game in the collectors edition somewhere where the sun dont shine. What a bunch of clowns
@Rich33 because one is vastly more popular i dont think you can compare ghosts to the elder scrolls they in completely different leagues in terms of popularity and critical acclaim . On metacritic alone Oblivion is 94 and skyrim is 96 while Ghost of Tsushima is 83.
I may wait until the inevitable crossover, Ghouls and Ghosts of Yotei.
Whoa! did not expect this coming when I woke up this morning on a random Wednesday but a welcomed news nevertheless.
Day 1 purchase!
I just beat Ghost's story for a second time on pc last night so the timing is really fitting lol.
But I am incredibly excited.
Shows up
Drops new trailer
Reveals release date
Refuses to elaborate further
Leaves
Chad Ghost of Yotei
Can we please stop making boogeyman out of GTA?
Wow, this game looks gorgeous. Tsushima has arguably the most gorgeous, realistic art style of any game on PS4 and Yotei looks to continue that on PS5. Can't wait to play this one.
Looks like I’m going back to finally play the Iki Island expansion after I’ve finished AC Shadows. With Yotei to follow and a trip to Japan (IRL) in the works for next year it may be a very welcome overload!
My most anticipated game of the year along with Death Stranding 2 (and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 once I finish the first). Still interested in GTA 6 (having lived in Florida) but I just can't see it having it's usual satirical edge considering how insane America is becoming.
Really surprised they chose to do this now instead of waiting for a May/June PS event. Maybe the May/June event is just the Borderlands 4 State of Play that was announced in February then?
@Can-You-Believe-Sith shadows will have been out for months by the time this comes out so they’re hardly competing.
Looks stunning! Really hope I can get a collectors edition ordered. If not it'll be the digital deluxe edition. Will def be finished AC Shadows by the time this drops.
So not looking good for a showcase this year if they announced the release date already. Wonder if the rumored god or war spinoff is true than what would they release it, I know they would keep it away from gta
What the hell is happening lately? Random news after random news, and it’s actually good? Let’s go!
This is gonna be good! Need some more Ghost in my life.
Looks fantastic. Need to get back to GoT and Iki Island first though.
Definitely all-in on this but I'll likely do what I did with the first one and wait for a 'Director's Cut' or whatever (and even then probably on sale) as there will inevitably be DLC for this game. With all the other games out there that I want to play, I prefer to minimize my monetary expenditures instead of letting these publishers nickel and dime me to death for everything. But yeah, this game looks GREAT!
I'm probably gonna bite at launch because I enjoyed Tsushima so much but wtf is this...
" The physical Collector's Edition contains:
All Digital Deluxe Edition contents (the game itself is a digital copy) "
It completely defeats the purpose of me buying the physical copy if the game itself is just a code I redeem on PSN 🤦♂️
I can not wait ghosts of tsushima is absolutely amazing so this is going to be great
Surprised by the out of the blue news, feels like we usually get a couple days notice on a big news drop.
The US centered cynic in me thinks it isn't a coincidence the Switch 2 preorders open at midnight tonight, but that part of me is a bit of a jerk so, so maybe just a coincidence? 😂
I enjoyed the island dlc in GoT so I suppose I'll wait a year before playing this after the dlc drops. I know I won't go back to a game just for dlc. Just finished GoW:R & Valhalla, still waiting for the dlc this spring to start Sea of Stars.
@Toot1st
My comment was about the way in which both games have been released / announced - I wasn't even getting into a popularity comparison - they are both 'big name' titles in their own way, even though 1 is only a remaster.
Although, I would say Oblivion (and Skyrim as you mention it) were both really excellent games for their time, that I played the 1st time around on console, they are a bit outdated now.
In 2025, the only reason I would buy the Oblivion remaster (and I probably will providing the performance horror stories prove to be vastly over-exaggerated), would be for a bit of nostalgia with a decent game - if GOY proves as good as its forebearer, Oblivion remaster (or even a new Skyrim remaster) wouldn't even get consideration from me if I needed to make a choice.
Three weeks before my birthday
@Toot1st You’re being completely disingenuous as normal. Oblivion sold 9.5 units lifetime across all formats at of 2015. Ghost of Tsushima sold 14m units in 4 years across PS and one month of PC sales.
Bethesdas last game is one of the lowest rated games on Steam and will never get close to 14m sales.
Sony following Nintendo's footsteps as usual, just casually dropping something out of nowhere.
I'm excited for Ghost of Yotei nonetheless and they even got Fairouz Ai to do the Japanese voice for Atsu, which is nice
Awesome money in my psn wallet ready too preorder digital deluxe 🔥
Super sold! starting with PS2 I still haven't played a Sucker Punch game that I haven't loved.
Wow is there no "proper" physical release?
Kinda hoping they are making an upgraded and expanded legends mode because I put waaaaaay more time into that than the game itself. Played it once to 100% and enjoyed it but I never go back to these types of games, after the busywork it's almost pointless. The legends mode fixed that for me and let me enjoy the fun combat without the replay....fingers crossed 🤞🏻
@Dodoo does read like it’s digital only doesn’t it? Would it be the first, first party Somy game to go digital only if the case? I genuinely don’t know btw.
Happy to see it but I'm still really annoyed to see a collector's edition still getting a digital copy of the game.
They're going full Kill Bill with the story here, I like it!
@Dodoo Playstation Blog says there's a physical standard edition so it seems they're going with the same approach they used for Spider-Man 2:
Trailer looks amazing!!!
@AgentCooper I would be remiss to not compliment your Protomartyr one while we are on the subject
Everything looks very good. 👍🏽
However, the gameplay looks a lot like the original Ghost of Tsushima. I have no problem with it, but I thought it was going to be an entirely new experience gameplay-wise.
Great! And I am glad the Collector's is not interesting, cause after DS2 my wallet just wouldn't handle it.
Still I am super excited for this game!
Yes this is want we want Sony, these production values and campaign amazement.
Also give my Pro a real work out.
I guessed September so not far out with the 2nd of October.
Don’t forget how Sonys first party has collapsed 😂. This is going to be epic!
@Ilovecoffee why would it be different. What were you expecting a switch to first person? Why are people on this site never happy 😂😂
That's so whack. No physical copy for the collector's edition...
@Ilovecoffee Uh.... yeah that's how sequels tend to work...
@Ilovecoffee I'm sure there will be some changes. Though hopefully not too many and I hope they keep the feel of Tsushima. They've already listed some of the new weapons so there's def differences. Also looks like the wolf will attack ppl for u.
Looks great. But as it stands this will mean it's over 12 months between Sony first party exclusive releases. ☹️
Nice, hopefully this year release to fill the much needed gap here!
SO EXCITED. Trailer looks gorgeous. Sucker Punch know what they're doing, for sure. A game like this would be worthy of my 500th Platinum. The timing should be pretty close (sitting at 473 right now).
Sony can do one a collector's edition without a physical game would have been a day one purchase now I'll wait and get its second hand so they get none of my money.
@SuperSilverback I was going to say it strongly reminds me of Naoe's story haha.
@Nepp67 people will say it's because of the PlayStation 5 digital version but to that I say why not put a disc in the box with a code as well
@Toot1st On PC it's 89 and on PS5 it's 87.
@Dampsponge Or even just have a different version of the collector's edition lol
@liamcroft The blog article has been updated with the prices for the physical CE:
"Finally, we are thrilled to reveal the Ghost of Yōtei Collector’s Edition2, which will be available for pre-order at direct.playstation.com in parts of the world where it is available, or at select retailers in other regions. Collector’s Edition will be $249.99 | €249.99 | 31,980 JPY MSRP."
i thought it was coming out in june or maybe july not october it makes me think sony pushed it back because of switch 2 coming out in june!
Good news. Excited to pre-order this sucker.
I’m sure it will be great but between AC Shadows, Rise of the Ronin and Ghost of Tsushima, I’m kinda done with this setting and period of history now. All the games blend into one. I hope Yotei can stand out from the crowd and isn’t just more of the same.
This game looks beautiful. Unlike when Ghost of Tsushima was released, I should be able to afford a PS5 before this game releases this fall so I won't have to wait for it to be released on PC. I've also wanted to play Rise of the Ronin, and have read the PC port has had "issues" so it's (hopefully) best played on a PS5 too.
I was a PS console owner until the 360, so whats old is new again, I guess?
@Bingoboyop This is hopefully shaping up to be the anti-2024. Even if GTA gets pushed to 2026, if everything else in your list releases on time or close to it, this year will IMO be a lot more packed (and fun) than last year. I kind of felt like last year was pretty sparse other than the "usual suspects" like COD.
@Dampsponge I agree with you. I know this is definitely not the first collectors edition to do this. I forget which game it was, but the first time I heard about a collector's edition being released without a physical game on disc I was like, "How? Then it's really not a collector's edition of the game. It's just a bunch of stuff related to the game put in a big box." 😂
@CieloAzure Absolutely. The CE's $249.99. Putting a disc in the box is what they choose to "skimp" on? 😂
The story-trailer confused me: Why is woman sitting down, when it would be much more polite to stand up, like these upstanding gentlemen are!
They even gave her a sword as compensation for unluckily killing the worst parts, arguably, of her family, so she seems ungrateful to boot!
But okay, maybe it's just a side character, because it seems pretty obvious we get to play as the charming rogue greeting her by the door. Seems like quality answering-the-door-gameplay to me. We don't get many of those.
This year is going to be one of the busiest years in gaming. Really looking forward to this game, just hope I don’t have to rush through to keep up with all the other releases.
The price of the collectors edition has been confirmed.
People should look at the official website rather than relying on this website.
All you do here is read one website and copy the information onto another site. Surely there must be AI that does this more efficiently now?
October 2nd. Too close to GTA6.
I’m going to purchase this for my mother’s birthday on October 1st. Once she says: “I don’t play video games, CWill97. Worst son ever”, I’ll take the gift (which will just a picture of the receipt without even the game cover on it. I refuse to waste my ink even with a black & white printer) back and keep it for myself. Then boom, October 2nd finally comes. In my typical revenge style, I’ll flaunt the physical game box to her and say: “Betcha wish you didn’t disown me now!!!” Of course that will be followed by a tactical retreat to the basement like every mature adult that lives at home does
Killing two birds with $70 worth of stones at once. Yes, I changed the saying quite a bit but yolo
(Disclaimer #1: I don’t live in the basement. I live in my room. Still at my parent’s house so I’m a badass. | #2: I love my mom but I have my priorities straight here. Gaming comes first | #3: My real name is actually CWill97 on my birth certificate | #4: Stop judging me. I’ll buy her a gift card, damn it!!!!)
@Dampsponge Because they're effectively giving you two copies of the game for the price of one. And once you crack open they big box, you'll more than likely turn around and sell the copy of the game you don't want, losing them a sale in the process.
@MrPeanutbutterz for £250 it's not like they're going to be losing money movies have been doing it for years don't forget digital games are tied to an account and can be taken away from you without notice
@Dampsponge If they give you two copies of the game at the same price for what they're charging for just the one then that is the very definition of losing money.
Films are a completely different medium that are consumed differently to videogames. Tell me this - how many of the DVDs and Blu-rays sitting in your local store come with digital versions for free? Because it's close to zero. Or how many come as dual format releases that are the same price as one format? Also close to zero.
Ah yes, the "they're gonna take your digital library away with zero notice" boogeyman. You really think Sony's pitch for the PS8 is gonna be "guys, we've just nuked your digital library that you've spent thousands accumulating over the last two decades for the LOLs, but plz buy our new - digital only - PS8 🥺🥺🥺"
@Athrum Poop scrolling? Are you for real?
@MrPeanutbutterz for the past 6 years I've been buying films that come with a 4K Blu-ray and a Blu-ray which cost the same price, £250 is not a small amount of money, and if you've ever had your account hacked then I'm sure you'll know what it's like to lose everything you've purchased without notice unless you want to spend months of your life trying to access your account again because Sony doesn't care.
@Toot1st Metastatic has nothing to do with popularity but since you mentioned it, GOT user score is 92 while Oblivion's user score is 85. I guess GOT was just better received by gamers. But Oblivion should be more people being on more platforms.
@thebizniznizbiz what, you don't poop? You need to get that checked.
Weird choice. The storyline being suggested here is very modern day assassins creed. Kind of disappointed it's just another 'check the several dramatically named villains off your list' revenge story.
Whole I enjoyed Tsushima, I felt it was highly overrated in the sense that it was a revelation in the genre. The cosmetic only incentive for most of its exploration was a real low point. The idea the exploration was less driven by icons was also more a gimmick, and the map was still riddled with icons to chase as the fog of war lifted. There were some aspects of tsushima that could use improvement in a sequel. However, I worry if Horizon, Uncharted, and even modern day GOW is anything to go on, sucker punch will likely be guided to merely double down on formulaic mimicry than do so. Which is an idea rooted in a boardroom: that one must copy the exact same formula to ensure the same success(profits), ignoring obvious room for improvement.
All that aside, It was still better the the Ubisoft open world formula merely based on combat and presentation alone.
However this story trailer felt very Ubisoft.
Also, you would have to be one hell of a gullible mark to pay for some overpriced collectors edition full of cheap memorabilia, yet no physical edition of a single player game... Although I feel like Sony has been largely doing this for a while now.
@x3King84 @Grumblevolcano thanks both, glad there seems to be a physical version!
Subtitles ‘out of nowhere’ made me laugh when I see release is 6months away. Lol
Had me hoping it was in July for a second.
@KundaliniRising333 "the storyline being suggested here is very modern day assassins creed"
I'm quite sure the classic 1973 Japanese movie title Lady Snowblood is one if not the biggest influence for this game story. And Lady Snowblood also gave a big influence for Kill Bill vol 1 & 2.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@ChrisDeku i am talking about why people care more about the elder scrolls then ghosts one is vastly popular long term franchise with multiple games spanning 30 years with over hundreds of millions copies sold on multiple systems if you think ghosts a mediocre assassins creed copy is more popular then you rally are just a blind fanboy
@Dampsponge Okay, so you've been buying the small number of films that do come with dual formats. Congrats, I guess? Still doesn't change the fact that the majority of dual format releases aren't priced the same.
And now you've pivoted to "but if your account was hacked!" because the "Sony gonna pull access for the LOLs" bogeyman does in fact not exist and your BS argument disintegrated under the slightest of scrutiny. But hey, thanks for being utterly disingenuous with what you wrote, tells me everything I need to know.
@Toot1st Ghost of Yotei will likely do about 4m copies in its first week on PS only. I doubt a remake of Oblivion is doing that, even over 3 formats. At the end of the day it's a remake of a 20 year old game from a company that has been on the downward spiral for over a decade. If you think that's a bigger deal than a sequal to one of the most successful new IPs of all time then you do you, lad. Tell yourself it's an assassins creed clone if it helps you when you're crying yourself to sleep in your Microsoft themed onesie.
@ChrisDeku again I'm not talking about oblivion im talking about the elder scrolls as a franchise and how it is much more popular then ghosts it has nothing to do with Sony or Microsoft like your trying to make it out its just a 30 year franchise with Skyrim alone selling more then 60 million copies ghosts has had one game, a game that was reviewed pretty average at that.
@Toot1st average reviews? It's an 87 on PS5 and 89 on PC and has a 93.74% on Steam despite getting review bombed for PSN. It's standing has increased over time and it is beloved by fans.
GtaV is the most successful game of all time, I don't recall people claiming the GTA remaster trilogy was the biggest release of the year.
What is wrong with Sony not putting a disc inside the physical CE??!!!! F that
@MrPeanutbutterz go download the games you bought on PlayStation 3 and see how many you can still download because it isn't all of them.
@Dampsponge How many of those games were removed from your library without warning?
I’m quite hyped for it. It’s quite disheartening however to see SIE get rid of Steelbooks. With previous releases, they had a sort of middle-tier Special Edition that normally had the steelbook minus the figurine. With DS2 and Ghost of Yotei they seemed to have scrapped steelbooks. Lots of fans out there enjoy collecting those. Would be great if this option is still available to those who enjoy that part.
@Athrum I don't announce it to the world on a website...
