Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is the next big release in Sony’s arsenal, and so it’s perhaps not massively surprising to learn it’s getting a Limited Edition DualSense controller, with pre-orders scheduled to get underway from 22nd May, exclusively on PS Direct.
Here’s a nice picture of Hideo Kojima holding the pad, courtesy of the PS Blog:

The controller, designed in collaboration with Kojima Productions, is jet black with the DrawBridge insignia emblazoned in orange across its touchpad. We think this one looks nice, although we think the details on the handles are a little overdesigned.
The controller will cost $84.99 / £74.99 when it launches, so it’s pricey – but that’s just the cost of gaming hardware these days. It’ll launch on 26th June, alongside the game.
What do you think of this one? Do you like its design, or is this another failed attempt from Sony’s hardware team? Safely deliver your opinion in the comments section below.

A bit too minimalist perhaps?
Am I the only one that just cannot get far into Kojima games? Whether its the metal gear series or the death stranding series. I just cant get far into them. Hours long cutscenes with confusing and overcomplicated stories, along with what feels to me like a lot of author selflove just..... has me rolling my eyes. I appreciate what he did for the gaming industry in proving that cinematic games ar epossible and lucrative. But man it feels like everyone treats him like he's some sort of messiah. Idk....
@Simu001 So in another word his games isn't for you aka you're not the audiences for his games. Gotcha.
@PuppetMaster yeah, my post was a bit long winded 😅. Also just to be clear. I have nothing against fans of his work. On the contrary. It's a good thing people have a different taste to mine or else the world would be really boring 😊
I’ll bite since I don’t have a black controller. I hope Ghost puts one out too closer to its release
£75 for a Midnight Black Dualsense with some very basic-looking stickers on it?! Madness!
Actually looks a bit boring and I think they could've done something better there.
@Simu001 I had this with Death Stranding. The moment I got to the 2nd map I just felt overwhelmed and quit. It was more because of the amount of mechanics I was being introduced to and becoming frustrated because I wasn't understanding how to utilise them properly (also, I just found so much of the moment to moment gameplay stressful and probably needed a break).
Then I came back a year or so later when Director's cut came out (back then the upgrade was only £5) and tried again. It became one of my all time favourites - goofy ass dialogue, wacko story and all. I decided, in the end, I was probably overthinking it.
But I've also experienced this with MGS. The only one I've actually finished is MGS4 back in '09. I've not allowed myself to play V (even though it looks great) because I want to play the earlier Naked Snake games, but I've started Snake Eater twice and never followed through. I'm going to try again this year.
So yeah, I do think it's a thing with Kojima games. For some of us, you have to force yourself through a little bit. Both times I've done so, though, I've ended up loving them.
The pad looks nice but I don't think I would ever bother with limited designs as I already have 2 white pads to match the console. The only one I was considering was the Astro pad but I didn't want three pads.
After some great recent controller designs (Annivesary, Astro and especially Helldivers), this feels like a let down - which is a shame because DS2 is my most anticipated game.
It just looks like a standard black DualSense with a few logos printed on. I really don't like having a 2nd shade of black on the grips either, serving as background to the text.
I think I would have preferred something that employed a two colour scheme, maybe with the orange from the metal of Robo-Higgs.
It's a shame because MGSV might have had the most beautiful special edition DualShock 4. I guess I was hoping for something bolder, like that variant.
Low effort garbage👎🏽
OVERdesigned? Nah, could actually use a bit more, I would say. It’s nice; I like the drawbridge logo and the details on the side. That said, I’ll likely pass…
Yeah that's one of the worst special edition controllers over ever seen
This has to be the worst looking limited edition dualsense so far. Missed chance to make a see-through dualsense like the thing BB is in, and just some handprints on it. But that probably would fit DS1 more.
Even Kojima looks ashamed holding it. Sony should hire some better designers for their controllers, their designs are just not really doing it for me most of the time
Already bought the Astro bot, 30th anniversary, and helldivers 2 limited edition controllers, don't need anymore.
Just like The Last of Us it looks like they should have included a sticker sheet in the box that gave you the option to customize a controller. Because that's all I see when I look at these now, also Kojima's disappointed face. This along with the no disc in the box (collectors edition) makes me really shudder when I think just how much these people think they can get away with. When you work in this kind of area and see massive companies hiring people who do that, it makes you not want to support them out of professionalism alone.
They get away with it because gamers are soft targets for consumerism, probably the easiest mark right now. As much as I love Death Stranding and adore all things Kojima I wouldn't touch that thing with a ten foot flag pole. I hate that they made him hold it, like they knew just showing it alone wasn't enough. Horrible.
I predict this won't be as sought after as the awesome clear yellow of the ps4 console special edition. The controller sells for £150 on its own
Good God what is going on with this level of cash grab low effort nonsense. This controller looks like garbage.
@Simu001 you 100% are not alone in your sentiment. There are a great deal of folks that love Kojima but also many like myself and you whom find him overblown, and many of his games mediocre in terms of coherent storytelling and fully fleshed out gameplay.
I’ll Probably buy this for collectable purposes but wow, this is a weak design. I thought the Last of us one was bad, but at least that had a bit of work to it. This should have been a see through red design with a kind of emblazoning of tentacles from the Red BB chamber that was shown early on with a Death stranding 2 Logo on the touchpad. Something cool. Black and orange. Feels like a big miss personally,,
the logo on the back looks very tasteful, black on black, but the design really just doesn't do much overall. It's like they put 3 orange stickers and called it a day.
If minimalism was the goal then some Orange highlights spread around, like on the face button icons, the d-pad arrows or under the joystick caps (like the Switch 2 has), could have been a tasteful way to do it.
Pretty underwhelming compared to my Spidey and 30th Anniversary versions... I'll pass.
Might get this. Not to overly designed.
Wish they had made one for Ghost of Yotei.
I dont mind it, but i wont buy a non ds edge controller. So make one of those in a special edition.
@TheMightyImp2 i have the death stranding se of the ps4 pro,,the controller is the reason i got the console ..its very pretty..
Would love Sony to do SEditions of the Edge Controller.
Why no love for the DS Edge (except for the handle peeling issue)
The only thing limited with the dualsenses is their lifespan.
