Re: PS5's New Weekly Player Tracker Has Revealed Some Brutal Truths for Fans

XanderTigerclaw

Kinda wish Sony would take a leaf out of the Apple App Store “Top Free” vs “Top Paid” chart formats, and have either those 2 categories and/or a “Top 1–2 Player” vs “Top Multiplayer” pair of charts instead. That way, the kids can have 1 ranking table, and those of us with taste(?!) can have the other… 😸

I’m only being slightly facetious here, I promise! I’d never really expect e.g. a Saros, Silent Hill F, Black Myth: Wukong, Alan Wake 2, COE33 etc to make a serious, consistent dent in the rankings given the list we’ve now seen above (except on the rare “release week” occasion for a chosen few; throwing a quick side glance at Capcom, for example), but would love to see how the “single player experience” type of games compare/trend over time, and this might be a simple way to get a better glimpse of that player behaviour. As others have commented, it’s almost 2 distinct audiences/playerbases anyway, so why not get insight into both of them separately?

(and for my part — I’ll happily pour 100+ hours into an engaging story-driven game, and yet have literally played zero of these “top 8” in my life, ever…) 😼

Re: Toei's Trio of First Games Hold Little Interest for PS5 Players

XanderTigerclaw

@saffeqwe I think that “nothing of interest for PS5 players” phrasing had more to do with the fact that “All three games are currently only targeting PC”, versus not directly being interesting in and of themselves (which was also addressed as a separate concern)?

I don’t have a PC, and only game on a PS5, so maybe I fit that mindset and thus interpreted it that way though… 😼

Re: Saros (PS5) - Housemarque at the Peak of Its Powers with Its Best Game Yet

XanderTigerclaw

Thanks @Quintumply for a great review — detailed enough without being spoilery! Returnal was an absolute favourite of mine for both story, gameplay, quality, and challenge (and how satisfying it was to progress and ultimately complete!)… and it’s great to read that Housemarque have only stepped up its game (so to speak) on all aspects now with Saros.

As an aside, I gotta say too… reading some of the comments here, I feel as though must be some kind of weird anomaly: in my 50s, love a challenge, love an engaging story, love a good jumpscare, still have mostly decent reaction time, don’t mind a “frustratingly” tough level/boss/puzzle I have to reattempt (often many times and/or over many sessions!) to overcome… and thus cannot WAIT for this game. 😸

Re: PS5 Exclusive Ghost of Yotei Rockets Right to the Top of PS Store Pre-Order Charts

XanderTigerclaw

For anyone in the US who freaks out at the recent “omg $80+ for a game” convo… down under we’ve been enduring that for some time now.

Assuming the quoted $70 and $80 prices are USD, the Aussie exchange rate on that right now is roughly $108 and $124 respectively… however these editions are listed as $125 and $140 on the AU PS Store (that’s 16% and 12% increases there, or basically the magic USD80 and 90 numbers).

GoY is only one recent example of this; I could easily trawl the PS Store for stacks of (especially AAA title) examples where this pricing discrepancy is in place. Meanwhile, AUD125+ is not (and hasn’t for some time been) uncommon for a “deluxe edition” here, and often for the “standard edition” too.

Why these considerable markups for literally the same digital product just downloaded to a different locale?? 👀😕

Me, I’m just thrilled I can finally get an even more bargain price on such sleeper hits as “Feed My Raptor”, “The Perplexing Orb: Bounce Challenge”, “Waifu Impact 2”, “Bug-o-Buster”, “Santa’s Spot it”, “Slicy Flips”, “Poopy Time”, “Monkey Kong in New-York”, or (and I am not making this up either) “YEAH! YOU WANT ‘THOSE GAMES,’ RIGHT? SO HERE YOU GO! NOW, LET’S SEE YOU CLEAR THEM! 1+2” 🤪

(dear god.)

Re: Death Stranding Celebrates 20 Million Players Milestone as PS5 Sequel Approaches

XanderTigerclaw

I’m one of those who invested heavily in Death Stranding and was in no way disappointed, found a depth to it that once I clicked with it just impacted me so deeply. The sold vs played argument doesn’t concern me, except to say I hope that most of the millions who did try it out also managed to discover and appreciate the emotional punches it held, all the beauty to be found in the mundane and arcane and insane. Really looking forward to the sequel.

Re: 'Don't Bet' on The Last of Us 3, Warns Neil Druckmann

I’ve never understood all the online vitriol against Part II… personally I found it compelling, emotional, true to the characters’ motivations, a top-notch work of pacing and action, and a very “just” ending (albeit painful to experience as the player) for the lead characters, who were all flawed in their own ways.

And besides the game itself, being “anti strong women” — physically, emotionally, however you read that really — is surely a patently ridiculous notion when you look at either history or storytelling right through societies (not just the “Western” ones either) as a whole. This isn’t an “agenda” thing, it’s just how the character was defined. Would the “offended” people have been happier had Abby been male? Why would that have made their drive and determination for blind revenge more believable or palatable?? To my mind, it’s quite the opposite — there’s more impact in Abby “becoming” the Abby, in Ellie “becoming” the Ellie, that we see by the final act of Part II because of how hardened they have become through their experiences (see also, arguably, Lara Croft across the Tomb Raider “reboot” trilogy from 2013–2018).

tl;dr loved Part I, loved Part II, and with the right story I’d love a Part III should it ever materialise.

Re: Sony Puts PS Plus Extra, Premium on Sale in the USA

XanderTigerclaw

Got an “Upgrade to Deluxe and save 35%” offer here today (Australia). Trying to stack a new year on top of my Extra subscription is still full price though.

If we actually had Premium here, not just the hamstrung Deluxe tier, I’d probably consider it. Come on, Sony… 😕

Re: Industry Journalist Says Xbox Game Pass Does Increase Premium Sales, But Mainly on PS5

“We know from data that there are a lot of people that only play Call of Duty”

… I cannot even imagine a more unfulfilling gaming life experience than missing out on literally any other genre for the sake of solely existing in some generic ‘Murrica propaganda shooter series. 😅

(apologies to any “COD-only” players out there, but… jeez, try anything else sometime, wow) ✨
