GTA 6 Physical Edition Doesn't Come with Discs, It's a Code in the Box

Oh come on. Ffs. Rockstar were basically the last company that did proper physical releases. With all the goodies we used to get as standard.

Edit: I saw some of the other stuff from their site and the nickel and diming for being the biggest entertainment product of all time is genuinely pathetic. They are straight up locking shops and whatnot behind editions.

Will be pre-ordering the ultimate edition, probably the only game I’ll ever do that for.

I'm sorry, I know that GTA 6 will likely exceed the 100gb storage limit on PS5 discs, but call it a hunch, I think GTA 6 is going to be enough of a hit for it to warrant them warrant forking money up for more discs.

I guess this game would be constantly patched so the disk version would be redundant anyway. A "complete" version in a disk a couple of years in the future would be more ideal.

I think we are reading the statement from Rockstar wrong. To me it sounds like the physical version has a disc but also a code to allow the original owner to begin the download of any day 1 patch early. It doesn’t say it doesn’t come with a disc.

That's a big downgrade compare to old GTA games that has disc, manual, and maps.

Wow, the arrogance. It's as if they're saying, "What are you going to do, not buy it?" They have a point in that - it's going to be a huge game regardless. They can afford to make it more expensive, bog it down with micro transactions, and not even put a disc in the box. No amount of negative press will stop them from moving tens of millions of units.

@PSXB I think you'll find a lot of people are telling R* this is a problem. R* just trying to force people in to digital as there is no reselling and harder to get refunds on digital copies.

I don't mind too much as I'll be able to have a digital version, allowing the option to play on Portal but also not have to pay the full RRP for the digital version for the PlayStation Store, as retailers will certainly offer lower price points.

You all don't understand. When you don't own the disc you down own the game, you just own a license to play the game (which can be revoked without consent). When you own the disc the license to the game is tied to the physical disc.

And retailers (at least here in Europe) don't have to take anything back "just because", so even if there was a code and disc (which there obviously isn't), they can legally shrug their shoulders at the customer.

Jedi Survivor is about 50GB bigger than a disc. You download the rest. But it also means you have the resale value, can buy secondhand, etc.

I think there's something called Green Man that partners with Ubisoft to sell keys to their games.
There are a few. But proper retail shops won't survive if you can just use these services to buy keys whilst sitting in your boxers on the sofa.

If it's a code in a box for the 'physical edition' , that effectively means digital fans will be able to pre-order the 'digital' edition from Amazon, Currys etc. for a discount as they typically offer.
(I got MGS Delta preordered for £50 from Amazon for example).

This will push Sony and MS’s digital sales to 90 plus percent. Xbox is already over 90 and Sony’s is close but GTA 6 will for sure push it over that. There is no reason to drive to a store or have a delivery man bring you a code in a box. Sure some people will still buy it but i don’t know why. I wonder if stores will buy a lot of copies and be stuck with them.

If I'm not paying $10-15 less because you're saving money on not printing a disc, art for that disc I'm out. Especially when you're expecting to make 100 trillion dollars.

I was going to get a digital copy for myself and a physical copy for my wife so we could play it at the same time. But now I'll just get two digital copies instead. It sucks since Rockstar wins bigger by me doing this, but I really have no interest in supporting this no disc and dataless disc craziness that has somehow become pretty standard for physical games.

I usually buy everything digital these days anyway, but if I enjoy physical editions I would probably be a little bit miffed about this.

Raise the price of your game from the standard $70 to $80.
Don't bother to put a physical disc in the box made for discs.
Listen to people whine for 5 months.

If memory serves then The Last of Us Part II, and Red Dead Redemption 2 both come with TWO discs to install.

I remember reading something to that effect when Cyberpunk Ultimate Edition came out as a disc + DLC, whereas the Series X version had it all in the box, spread over three discs.

Most games these days rely on some sort of download from the internet to get the full game. Not everything is contained on the disc.

Servers will eventually be turned off for old consoles and games and having the disc wont matter because its becoming less likely that 100% of the game is on the disc to start with.

The simplicity of the PS2 days and back are gone my friend.

@MrPeanutbutterz yeah secondhand is the good part about physical I know, but being realist digital is bigger every passing day, second hand is condemnet to be residual in a few years. So i very much prefer a free market for digital.

now people will be forced to download a 200GB+ file onto their console. that is going to be a brutal experience for many. this marks the symbolic end to physical media on sony's platforms if one of the most mainstream game releases in history won't even have a physical release. the beginning of the end... this makes the pre-orders even stupider than i initially imagined haha.

It would be 7 discs (it's 675gb and double layer discs are 100gb) at this point it's totally understandable tbh

I don't understand the point in RS releasing a physical copy at all. Isn't it all just a waste of plastic, paper & ink. Essentially creating more waste on this planet for no reason at all. There's actually no point at all on having it as you can't re-sell it later if you so choose. Infact, if its a digital code only in the box then you might as well just purchase digital anyway and get to play it a week early. And if thays the case, Isn't the actual release date the 12th of November now?? I dunno, something seems off here. No physical disc, no purchase from me.
Remember, Alan Wake 2 did this also and shot themselves in the foot in the process.

Day 1 buy for me is out ... wait for physical or a sale ... going back to the future instead and play the PS3 physical games that include all of the DLC on disc

It's clear to me they know people will buy it and lump it, because it's GTA, and even if it puts off a few, it won't be significant with the billions of Dollars they are going to make.

Upsetting for a physical collector like myself, but if they know they can sell a copy that can't be re-sold to someone else (for the game and content, not the physical extras) then greedy Take Two are of course going to do that as it'll mean more sales overall, while eliminating the second hand market.

A small indie studio that would be lucky to turn 50K in revenue not shipping their game on disc, that’s understandable. TakeTwo/R* are going to make more than several third world countries’ combined GDP in about 10mins after GTA6 releases, so not minting a disc—or two, if that’s what it takes—is inexcusable, piss poor business practice.

It sucks about this code in a box thing… but GTA still gonna be a big hit regardless.

It's a stupidly big game, let's just hope it's worth it and they keep the online separate when it comes out, do the file size doesn't get even bigger.

Just looking at my Steam account.

I see all my GTA games and they are still there.

GTA IV, last played June 23, 2012. I can still install it and play it.

GTA V, last played April 4, 2017. I can still install it and play it.

One day I may well replay them. If a game is worth buying and spending my time on, I'm never going to sell it. Especially a game like GTA.

Don't get why you all want bits of plastic to be produced, shipped around the globe pumping out tonnes of carbon, and eventually ending up as microplastics in the sea, killing your great, great great grandchildren long after you've gone.

People are all talk in comment threads. Everyone hates digital but take a look at digital sales compared to physical the last few years. People complaining everyday about digital are the 1% nowadays

To me the biggest thing not being discussed is they have completely eliminated the second hand market for GTA6. You can’t loan it to a friend or borrow it from the Library or trade it in. At least with the way Crimson Desert handled its physical release you had the option to do that. It won’t fit on 1 disc and it may not even fit on 2 so it’s obvious that a download is needed. At least they could have given a disc that unlocks the game at release and allows the game to be downloaded and ready.

As a 95% physical gammer I have ZERO problem with this.
This IS why digital should exist.
If this was not digital it would more then likely be more than one disc. So for example pretend there is a MK Oppressor in GTA 6. If you fly from one side of the map to the other you may have to insert disc 2. So when a 200+ gig game releases it’s kinda expected that it’s not gonna fit on the physical media. Plus I’d get digital for this as well so I can more then likely stream it instead of downloading anyways and play it on my portal via stream option. Plus it’s not like this game isant gonna get 10 years of massive updates.
This is one of the examples where digital IS the correct option.

@Mjoen I'm a digital gamer, but this take is incorrect. Even if a ps5 game shipped on 10 discs, the only time you'd need to switch discs is when installing it.

@helloim_anthony I think the ps6 will have a disc drive as an optional attachment, and the ps7 won't even have that. Eventually discs won't make enough profit to be worth the effort

I'm sure all the people that refused to buy Alan Wake 2 for being digital only will stick to their guns and not buy this.

@springer17 Indeed, but in which case what's the actual point? You're basically offering a 2nd channel to purchase the digital game... with no benefit vs going direct (unless individual retailers start discounting, which is a possibility). The only other reason is to allow the "physical" release to be gifted, which coming up to Xmas will be quite lucrative. But that wouldn't be necessary if Sony developed gift purchases on the PS store.

Charge me $100 and put two disc in it.
But no disc and no Map, i am not buying it until goes on sale for $25 in 2030, i have no rush.

@PuppetMaster The industry is pushing this to be the norm. I don't like it either but I don't think we are going to stop it. CDs and DVDs are basically dead. Games were one of the last physical mediums, but even the discs and cartridges are just shells of the game. I'll be shocked if the next generation even includes physical media but nobody wants to be the first to lock that out completely.

Hmm wonder how many will stick to their guns and not buy due to no disc…. Not many I suspect.

@Coversnail it doesn’t say this on the Rockstar GYA 6 page. Just that there will be a code to support preloading of the game. As in insert disc, punch in code to access any day 1 patch that can preload. This way you don’t have a download queue to wait on and you can play immediately on release day.

They will do one in the future because of the backlash

I’m weirdly enjoying being one of a handful of people who genuinely don’t care about GTA VI. And the lack of a physical release has reduced my limited interest even further. I’ll probably just watch some reviews and a highlights reel on YouTube.

Even if this was released on a disc, it is going to probably get a Day 1 update and multiple updates over the next decade. Having the disc would be pointless.

@mattitudemf That's not the point though, Physical isn't great because there's shorter load times, but because you own it, short of bricking the console they can't get rid of access to the game you've paid for like they can with digital. The way they've done it this time means that you have a digital copy but now with a box.

I wonder if they will in future "respond to customer feedback" and offer a disc solution. Depending on the size, would likely be a GTA5 style Data + Play discs, for say a 150-200GB game 2x 100GB discs on PS5.

If they went with this delayed approach, they would protect the release from spoilers, digital & code in the box would prevent "fell off a lorry" leaks weeks before release. And the digital & code purchases will allow them to easily meet demand.
The only potential issue will be everyone hammering the PSN servers day of release, but with digital at least there will be pre-loading, which should help spread the data over the week leading up to it.

Personally a £70/£90 code in a box would be a non-starter for me. At that point, you may as well just get it digitally (unless stores offered a large enough discount on the code in box).
Either way, I wont be buying... as I don't even have a PS5 or XBSX.

Maybe the game will be the final push I need to get a PS5, but £570 (+ £70 for GTA) is still a little steep for what in November will be a 6yr old console.
Perhaps I should play my PS4 during this mini-heatwave in the UK, and see whether the console or me is cooked first. Force my hand on the PS5 purchase.

GTA6 being digital only is a joke.

Theres pushsquare info going back to late january this year relating to gta6 physical disc version,from a reputable source apparently saying the source of the info had heard conflicting reports that gta6 would get a physical disc retail version a few weeks after 19th november 2026 launch day ,and the other report they had heard had said physical disc version would release sometime early 2027 and that was because of potential leaks of the game ,i went and looked at this info yesterday as id thought that i remember something earlier this year about gta6 on pushsquare do to with disc version.i personally prefer their red dead games and have fallen off gta's for a gd while now but id be interested to get this if its great fun and pull me back in,i'd only be interested in getting disc version and really hope that pushsquare info is true and they release a gta6 on disc.i can wait extra time to get it on disc ,in my mind i think we will get it on disc on ps5 but wait to hear more.

I haven’t seen anyone in the news sites mentioning that GTA VI digital codes are region locked. I just read it on their website and seems unprecedented in my opinion but its something to keep in mind if someone plans to import a Physical copy cheaper

Corporations can benefit from globalisation by undercutting our jobs, but we can't benefit by borderless purchasing of digital products...

PC and Xbox on the other hand are a lot more open in terms of "grey import" codes.

I don't care if I have to wait an hour or 5 for a game to download, the fact I can go to ebay or some store and give it to them for money after finishing, or be able to have the physical sensation of putting my game in is something I value. And the fact any game pulls stuff like this is annoying because it means I can't go to a local second hand store and grab it from the shelf because a company decided to pull this.
