It looks like Housemarque has done it again, as its latest game Saros is a smash hit with critics.

The PS5 exclusive shooter has attracted near-unanimous praise, with reviews that are practically glowing pretty much everywhere you look.

The reviews are strong enough to put it comfortably among the top-rated games of 2026 so far.

The overall message seems to be that the game has successfully taken the electric gameplay of Returnal, made it feel even better, and made the whole thing much more flexible and friendly without spoiling the challenge.

We echo that sentiment, too — our 9/10 review for the game is live now, so you can read all about what we make of it.

If you need further convincing, here are a handful of reviews from other outlets to provide a broader view of the consensus.

VGC - 5/5

Saros is a bold, confident realization of 30 years of Housemarque. It builds on the mystery and exceptional gameplay of Returnal with an excellent lead performance, and changes to the formula mean even more players will come to realize that Housemarque is PlayStation's secret weapon.

Game Informer - 9.25/10

Moving, shooting, improving (both in stats and skill), winning, and even losing is an unequivocal joy in Saros, and I only wish I could write this sentence faster so I can hurry up and get back to planet Carcosa and attempt another run.

GameSpot - 9/10

Housemarque's previous game is fantastic in its own way. Yet Saros elevates the studio's roguelite formula to another level. Its structure is surprisingly malleable, combat is deeper and more rewarding, and I couldn't resist being wrapped around the finger of its mysterious and foreboding narrative. I find roguelites hit-and-miss, but it didn't take long before I was utterly infatuated with Saros. It's an incredible game that does more than just refine what worked before. Even after rolling credits, I can't wait to dive back in.

GamesRadar - 4/5

A lean fusion of sci-fi action and eldritch horror that alternates between introspective narrative and madcap combat, Saros is Housemarque's largely successful attempt to broaden the appeal of previous roguelike Returnal without sacrificing anything along the way. The final result is pure atmosphere, and sticks with you in all the right ways.

IGN - 7/10

Saros tries at an interesting and ambitious story it isn't always able to effectively tell, but Housemarque has once again proved that its bullet-hell sensibilities mesh incredibly well with fluid and challenging action.
