'If nothing else, you’ve got to give the publisher credit for actually incorporating something new in this year’s game – even if it did steal its homework from NBA 2K.'
Ummm....I really don't, why would you? NBA2K is one of the most aggressively monetised games on console and you want EA to get credit for including new new mode ripped from NBA2K that they will monetise?
You know this, we all know this, that's why we get so dissapointed that all gaming media outlets are set up to do little more than curate 'news' and articles from social media. I feel sorry for anyone who didn't live through the 70s, 80s and 90s when gaming journalism was interesting.
@RoomWithaMoose no, I was clear. Spider-Man films gave people want they wanted, a Spider-Man they could relate to written with the fans in mind. Supergirl gave folks an unlikeable character from an unpopular comic that nobody related to because nobody wanted this version of Supergirl apart from Noguiera, as proven by it being a box office disaster.
@RoomWithaMoose exactly. People wanted Spider-Man, people got Spider-Man, such large numbers of people the films made tens of billions of pounds, a causal relationship. Are they not the right kind of people/fans or something? I'm not sure why this is contentious.
@trev666 it's reason enough, the film has an effect on the renewed popularity of the games and the game gets new updates related to the film. Do they need more reason than that? Seems reasonable to me.
Prerty simple really, Spiderman films consistently give the people what they want, so they perform brilliantly at the box office. Sadly, other many other superhero films of the last decade insist on giving people what the film maker wants, like that crappy script and story for Super Girl, and then thry blame the public for not going to watch it.
"I do get that people would be asking for remakes of other titles. But if we did remake those other titles, we’d probably end up having to release them in four instalments or maybe even five instalments."
It's this mentality that is partially responsible for contemporary game development being overblown and expensive. In their minds remaking games is some epic endeavour that means everything done on grander scales, more spectacular, higher production values, blah blah. Just remake the game smarter. Do a Clar Obscura, stop treating game development like an exercise in self-indlugence and just make the game we want. To say remaking FF6 would take 5 games is such a stick-your-head-between-your-legs-and-fart comment, it's ridiculous.
@LifeGirl because Hollywood and game development has a significant number of creators who do not think they should create products that we want but rather create promotional tools for their own worldview, expect us to thank them for bringing their politics into our films and games, and then get upset and blame us when we don't because all we wanted was to be entertained.
Good. You're all risk adverse and boring. The games you make are marginally improved versions (graphically) of games I've already played a hundred times before in the last 20 years. Come back when you've got some fresh ideas. Though you won't. You'll do remakes and people will lap them up because nostalgia is powerful, and games from 20 years ago are more interesting than the slop we get these days.
@johncalmc who's annoyed at playing as a girl? Why do you take notice of internet nonsense? It's a well established fact that when presented with a choice of sex for character model a huge proportion of male players CHOOSE to play as a girl. I know I do. I always play as a female character given the choice. Fem Shep ftw!
If you wanted to make playing as the opposite sex an issue, which it isn't, the statistics show that far fewer female gamers choose to play as men than male players choose to play as women. Men are more open and prone to playing as the opposite sex than women for a variety of reasons so it's total nonsense to say men have a problem with female leads in games.
@LordOfTurnips why are you taking it as negative? I said the remake looks as good as any AAA game on PS5. It's clearly a looker. The point is was making is that I don't see it as progress. Of course the game is going to look better on today's machines. The original version did things graphically that set new standards for gaming. The new version doesn't do anything visually that we haven't already seen, or even tries to. Not that it has to, but if we're talking about how the visuals have evolved, well they haven't, they've simply been improved and updated to take advantage of better hardware and graphics engines. No progress has been made.
It was more impressive when it came out. The remaster is merely on par with a modern AAA title but when Halo first came out it set benchmarks with its draw distance, sense of scale, dynamic lighting, character models ect.
I think it's not progressed at all in the sense that how it looks now is nothing we haven't seen before in other PS5 games and isn't even best in class in any aspect. It's just modernised version of Halo without pushing any boundaries, unlike the first game's visual presentation. The visual 'progress' is only down to better hardware, which is an expectation, and not creative development.
No, do what's right by the lore and the subject matter. Games can go wrong when people reimagine them to fit in with some message they want to insert into it. So far so good with First Light, it's OK, but now Amazon are taking over who knows what they'll do to it.
@ShadowRJ it's a small enough group of people that Sony can safely ignore and wait for the fallout to dissipate. Not saying I agree, only that it was inevitable because of how people are choosing to buy games.
I don't know why people are upset. PC gaming went digital decades ago because people chose convenience over physical games. And now console gamers have done the same. You reap what you sow.
Mbappe is the best current footballer because football has changed so much in the last 20 years that skill and creativity has almost been removed from the game. This makes him the perfect cover-boy for EA FC as its what they've done to gaming's football.
20 years ago when football wasn't just about athleticism, speed and ball retention we were spoilt for great players. Mbappe would've been way down the list behind Ronaldo, Zidane, Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Messi, Cristiano, Roberto Carlos, Henry and Peter Crouch, to name a few. They were Pro Evo and now all we've got it FC dross.
When Tides Turn is what they picked for a new name? How bad were the ones they didn't pick?! When Farts Smell? When Cheese Sweats? When Doves Cr...oh wait...that's a good one.
@MrStark it is a skills issue. I found Returnal easier than any Souls game. In fact, once you figure out how to play Returnal it's actually not that difficult at all. It's all about the health pick-ups and how you use them.
Save the Health upgrades so they increase the size of your health bar. Do not use them to replenish health. Strategically use the coffin thingy for that. Makes the game much easier.
@RamboMike happens too often. Sometimes I don't think they understand the words they use. 'Gaslighting' this time. 'Skeptical' was another, using it as if it meant cynical. I think it's a generational. Youngsters can't even write in cursive anymore and use American spelling and phraseology. I suppose it's a symptom of the impact of social media and the overall decline in critical thinking.
Would it have been 17 million players if it weren't for it being on Game Pass? I'd download it if I had GP just to see if I liked it otherwise why would I pay for GP in the first place? A rare Xbox exclusive after years of lack of 1st party support. It's got to be difficult to truly understand a game's true popularity that includes players who played it on a subscription service.
It's estimated only 1 million units were bought on Xbox and 8 million played it via GP, and that numver includes downloading the free trials. That doesn't translate into if it weren't on GP 8 million more units would've been sold, so how popular is the game really?
Steam sold 3.7 million, I reckon it would've been the roughly the same on Xbox if not for GP.
