Platinum Trophy #32: Returnal
Date Earned: 27th September 2021
Dopamine Index:
Occasionally, people have said to me that I'm quite skilful when it comes to games, having finished so many, including some toughies.
While I can't deny I've beaten some difficult games in my time, I don't think I'm any better at playing them than your average gamer. What I do have in my corner, though, are two things: patience and stubbornness.
If I'm enjoying a game enough, I'll push through it no matter how much resistance I face.
A good example is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I reviewed it, meaning I played it before launch, and before any wikis or guides were available to offer help. I don't have the platinum Trophy, but I did roll credits through sheer force of will (and because I really loved it).
Another tough game — one I do have the platinum for — is Returnal, which I also reviewed and finished prior to launch.
I died a lot playing through Selene's time-looping nightmare, but through practice and determination, I made it to the true ending. It was so worth it.
Returnal is a challenging game, but overcoming that challenge is so rewarding and fun to do. It comes down to extremely strong fundamental action, something for which Housemarque has a knack.
With this game, the studio really levelled up in other aspects as well — the storytelling, music, and general presentation all contributes to a great game.
The Trophy list doesn't cause a lot of strife, but there is one objective that may prove too much for some, and that's to complete each biome's survey.
Doing so basically involves finding all the various collectables in each of the game's zones, which doesn't sound too hard until you remember this a run-based game with randomly generated level layouts and item distribution.
In other words, there's no real guarantee you'll find what you need to complete each biome survey.
I think the odds of finding undiscovered collectables has been increased in the years since Returnal's launch, but even so, the only option for Trophy hunters is to simply keep playing and exploring standard runs until you finally get everything.
This can take a long time. I know this, because it took me a long time.
I think the best compliment I can give Returnal is that I didn't mind hunting down those last few Xenoglyph Ciphers one bit.
I don't know how many runs I had to go on for this extracurricular mission, but I took pleasure in every single one, because the game is just a blast to play.
Shooting those crazy glowing aliens and dodging those crazy glowing bullets is so simple at its core, but the feedback is great, and it constantly tests your skills and forces you to pay attention.
It may have taken me many more hours to do, but eventually I did get everything I needed for those surveys, and I loved every minute. I was rewarded for my patience, stubbornness, and genuine love for the game.
I'm not sure it was the best decision to put collectables-based Trophies in a game like this, but it gave me a decent excuse to keep playing much more that I would've otherwise, so there's that, I suppose.
Cheers, Returnal.

You're a stronger man than I! I truly hit my mental capacity to process what I needed to do with this game, I couldn't keep hitting my head against that wall.
Now Resogun, every day I worked on that sucker, but this, it's a whole new breed of determination that's required!
Well done, seriously well done!
One of the most enjoyable platinum trophies I've gotten (from 158), yes the RNG can be brutal but at the same time I wouldn't have it any other way as the game was so fun to play!
I will also say this I IMPLORE more people give both Returnal and Saros a try as they super polished and satisfying when you get the hang of them.
@Quintumply how long did this take you to get?
Save the Health upgrades so they increase the size of your health bar. Do not use them to replenish health. Strategically use the coffin thingy for that. Makes the game much easier.
Tried but could never get into this game - it's pretty but the game loop is too long for a roguelike and ultimately samey, nor could I relate to the main protagonist/story.
Great game, I finished it this year but I didn't get the trophy for it.
I have one trophy left on this and I just couldn't be bothered to keep grinding for it - I was missing one audiolog on Biome 3, I think, and it's random so I tried maybe 5 times and then no more.
Other than that gripe, my favorite PS5 game so far.
120 hours played, one of the cyphers refused to spawn in Biome 2. Meh.
One of the most annoying games I've played this generation.
Bear in mind, I have no problem with Souls-like games.
The problem with Returnal was, and still is, the whole RNG... you know... like HFW. It makes for what I call "cheap" and "lazy" game design. As far as I'm aware, such a mechanic doesn't exist in the Souls games. I'm happy to be corrected.
Worse still, I found that it's MEANT to be played in co-op. Co-op makes it much easier. So, the solo experience is unbalanced and too hard.
Well done, HouseMarque. Saros plummeted in sales too; well done again. Why would your next game be similar to your previous one, which wasn't popular? You can't make it up.
@TheDarts @Oram77 you can play the entire game and not run into one. Save the healths for when you need to run back and get them to face the boss.
@MrStark
Respectfully, that's a skill issue. It's a damn sight easier than most of Housemarque's previous games. It's a leisurely stroll in the park compared to Nex Machina.
But like the Souls games, that's kinda the point. It's supposed to be a challenge. If you don't like the challenge that's cool, the game isn't for you. But it's absolutely not unbalanced for solo play.
@MrPeanutbutterz
It's not a skill issue. I have played most of the Souls games and almost all HouseMarque games. The solo experience is hampered by the RNG because you can get negative traits and elements. Your run can be literally ruined by bad rolls you get in your run.
It's easier than other HouseMarque games? Not even close. Other games by them are fairly well balanced and consistent in what you get hence why Returnal is annoying and a chore to play.
Once again, I'm right.
@MrStark It's a rouge-like bro, RNG is key component of this genre...
I still remember that painful grind, 15 hours to finish the game and then 110 hours on those final few collectibles. The RNG on this was insane.
@MrStark it’s a skill issue and you’re wrong. Stop making excuses for why the game beat you.
I had a great time grinding out this platinum, and the platinum for Saros as well.
Returnal is probably my favorite PS5-exclusive game. Loved every second of it. Finally bit the bullet and got Saros this week, and am loving it just as much.
I wish more games just focused on gameplay like this .
@MrStark Just don't pick up the parasites with the negative traits then? A duff run is a duff run, sure, but in any session you'll get some runs better than others, but the game is still balanced just fine for solo play (I mean if it wasn't why is there a chorus of people praising how fun it is?).
And yes, it's markedly easier than some of their other games. Although it's Housemarque-adjacent, Sektori is so punishing I still can't get past the second level, yet made it to the fifth biome of Returnal (taking out the second, third, and fourth bosses on my first encounter) the first time I went past the first.
I'm also a veteran Souls player. Returnal is a cakewalk compared to them too, and I don't find them particularly challenging.
So yeah, skill issues abound.
@ElPenitente
It’s not a skill issue. It’s rng. How is rng which screws up my run a skill issue? lol.
The game didn’t beat me. Gets your facts straight pls.
Returnal scored 86 metacritic. Good but not great reviews.
74 user score on Metacritic. Even gamers didn’t like it a great deal
Whoops. I’m right. Moving on….
RNG in games, is like playing on Fruit Machines in a casino.
It's gambling, but not even semi-skilled gambling like betting on horses, where you can at least study form etc.
It's zero skill. A chimp could sit at the machine and get the same results.
The only difference is that in the game you waste your precious, priceless, finite time, rather than wasting coins.
@MrPeanutbutterz
Ignoring malignant loot leaves you underpowered not to mention you miss out on currency you need to level yourself up.
The point is that the game is built around risk vs reward. You HAVE to engage in the rng of it or you will be missing out on crucial upgrades and currency.
So, yeah… rng is trash.
Then there’s the random level design. It’s lazy and cheap game design. The sales of the game as well as Saros back up my argument: these games are annoying and people don’t like them. Whoop! There it is!
I’m right. Peace!
@MrStark you’re complaining about the game being unbalanced when clearly it isn’t. Learn to play the game with what it throws your way and stop making excuses about RNG being the issue.
Bringing up what review scores have to say doesn’t have anything to do with your skill issues either.
Got Justin Hammer in here thinking he’s Tony Stark.
I’m right!
@ElPenitente
Yes. Many people have discussed the annoyances of the game and its rng for years so let’s ignore this and act like it’s a non-issue.
These are the facts. It’s absolutely unbalanced otherwise people wouldn’t be critical of its game design.
As for me being Tony Stark, I never said I was lol. As I always say, when insults get personal that’s when the argument is lost.
I would stop if I was you because you may very well be moderated. I have not said anything personal.
I got this platinum out of stubbornness and love for the game at the time! This and Saros are pure dopamine.
@MrStark Your incessant need to constantly say "I'm right" is so cringe. You're obviously saying mostly opinions not facts. This game isn't a souls like, I'm not really quite sure why you keep bringing them up. It's a rogue like, which literally uses rng, which is totally fine if you don't like those kinda games. Also Returnal didn't get co-op until an update so no actually it wasn't meant to be played in co-op.
@MrStark You compensate for ignoring the malignant loot with (wait for it!) skill. You can quite literally skip the game-breaking (to you) RNG mechanics by engaging with skill instead.
If it leaves you so underpowered, how come I used to do biome 1 to 6 runs without collecting any for fun? Because I was skilled enough to do so.
Seems like there's a pattern emerging here...
I'm right! I'm skilled! You're neither! Peace!
Returnal really isn't a hard game to platinum but it is grind trying to get I forgot what it was but u had to collect them in every biome but they had to spawn in a certain location and that can take a lot of hours to happen where u think it might be a glitch with the game
@Dogbreath And your point is? RNG for collectibles appearing, sure, but pure skill to take you through the biomes, defeat all the bosses, roll credits, etc.
I'd love to see a chimp beat Returnal - do you have any footage of this feat?
@MrStark it is a skill issue.
its pretty achievable to beat even the last biome and final boss most runs, regardless of pulls etc
@babybilly I don't recall, but I've put a lot of time into the game overall. My PS5 says I have 119 hours logged
@MrStark @MrPeanutbutterz I really liked Returnal and I don't think the game requires co-op at all, that's hyperbole - I am not the best gamer, my reflexes are aging and yet I still beat it solo, several times.
That said I did think there were occasionally some BS rooms that just ruined a run. Most of the game I found pretty easy and I would be cruising through, building my character on lower layers only to meet one room that would destroy me pretty quickly. That was disheartening, especially when runs could take an hour. It was almost never bosses, most of which I beat first time, or on a saved life the same run, it was just some random room, not even harder challenge rooms you can purposefully avoid. (I actually enjoyed these more)
It's a shame as Returnal was utterly brilliant but let down, for me, by these elements and the RNG. It's one of the reasons I decided NOT to go for the Platinum as I think I would have ended up liking the game less due to frustration.
i didn't like the game at first, then it clicked and i had a blast till the end.
and then there were a couple audiologs and rune to collect for the platinum, how hard can it be? turn out the rng is ass and the platinum was a pain in the ass. ended up hating the experience.
I'm not a trophy hunter, but Returnal is one of my six platinums†. I went for it since I got almost everything during my many, many runs to complete the game. A couple of things in rare RNG rooms were a bit of a pain, but since I was no longer fearing dying during a good run, I found it freeing to be less cautious in my play. It took me about 70 hours. Great game.
† Astro’s Playroom, God of War, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Returnal, Spider-Man
@MrStark it is a skills issue. I found Returnal easier than any Souls game. In fact, once you figure out how to play Returnal it's actually not that difficult at all. It's all about the health pick-ups and how you use them.
"I think the best compliment I can give Returnal is that I didn't mind hunting down those last few Xenoglyph Ciphers one bit."
This sums its up so well. It took me around 20 hours to get the last cipher on biome 2 (and looking at the steam achievements, it does seem the hardest one) which sounds ridiculous but I just wanted an excuse to keep playing the game. With Returnal I think you either click with the game or you don't but when you do it's just one of the most satisfying games to play. I became extremely efficient at getting through biome 2 and finally found the last cipher.
I couldn't finish with the game though and have nearly 400 hours in it now, I still feel the need to hop back in and do a few runs from time to time.
The most overrated PS5 exclusive so much so the follow up have sold horribly!
This was one of my disappointments of this PS era. I enjoyed almost everything about the game expect it was a rogue like game and Sony never really stated that in the marketing.
I love the production quality of Returnal however I hated the loop!
I really tried to like this game. I tried hard lol lol lol
Got the plat on Returnal and thought the whole experience was brilliant.
I bought it as I remember it was really the first proper PS5 game to launch without a PS4 version, so wanted to really see what the new PS5 could do when unleashed (especially in the capable hands of Housemarque).
It's hard but highly rewarding!
