Ever since Final Fantasy 7 Remake became a reality, fans of Square Enix's long-running series have pondered the potential of similar remake projects for other classic Final Fantasy games.
In particular, Final Fantasy 6 is a popular suggestion. Not only is it widely considered to be one of the best entries in the franchise, it's an old game, originating on the SNES, and retaining its sprite-based visuals in all of its re-releases since.
You might say it's ripe for the remake treatment, and at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival 2026 — which took place over the weekend — a couple of series veterans actually discussed the possibility.
Now to be clear, neither of them even suggested that it'll happen, but their comments are interesting all the same.
To be more specific, Final Fantasy 14 director and producer Naoki Yoshida — who also produced Final Fantasy 16 — claims that remake projects like Final Fantasy 7's reimagining take way more time and effort than most people realise.
He argues that Final Fantasy 6's overall scope would require a full series of remakes, even larger than Final Fantasy 7's remade trilogy.
"Look at Final Fantasy 6; it’s such an incredibly huge game. The scale is just immense," he begins.
"I do get that people would be asking for remakes of other titles. But if we did remake those other titles, we’d probably end up having to release them in four instalments or maybe even five instalments."
Yoshida applies that same logic to other oft-requested remakes, like Final Fantasy 8, and Final Fantasy 9 (which was rumoured for a long time before disappearing from reports).
Funnily enough, this isn't the first time that a prominent Final Fantasy developer has commented on such a remake being a gigantic undertaking. Back in 2024, Yoshinori Kitase said that a modern retelling of Final Fantasy 6 would take 20 years to make.
