In a surprise announcement, Moza Racing is now the official peripheral partner of Gran Turismo 7 – a shock considering none of its hardware is currently compatible with the PS5.
The announcement comes alongside confirmation that first-party studio Polyphony Digital will be partnering with the manufacturer on “a Gran Turismo-branded steering-wheel controller”.
Exactly what hardware it’s going to use at upcoming Gran Turismo World Series events in the meantime is unclear, although I’m sure both parties considered that before signing the deal.
In fact, it sounds like part of this partnership includes Moza Racing really strengthening its relationship with the PS5 in general.
A spokesperson told Traxion:
“This partnership marks the beginning of a new chapter for Moza Racing, as the company works toward introducing its first officially licensed PlayStation racing products. While development remains underway, Moza Racing looks forward to sharing more in the coming months as it continues expanding its ecosystem and delivering new experiences for Gran Turismo players worldwide. This is only the beginning, with more exciting announcements to come.”
Moza Racing generally makes extremely high quality racing hardware, designed for enthusiasts.
That means you can expect premium price points, but these peripherals are for serious players who want to take their sim racing skills to the next level.
It all feels like a compelling fit for Gran Turismo 7, and whatever else Polyphony Digital has cooking for the future.
Speaking as part of the press release, Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi shared a predictably nerdy statement on his background with Moza Racing:
“My first experience with Moza was actually through their camera stabilisation gimbals. Gimbals and steering controllers both use the same type of technology in that they exercise very precise control over electric motors, so I had my eyes on Moza’s developmental ability, technology, and reliability for a while now. The evolution of consumer level force feedback steering that started from Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec is still ongoing, but with Moza now joining us as a partner I’m excited to see the expanded possibilities to develop a steering wheel that is optimal in the eyes of Gran Turismo. Please look forward to the new products that will be released through Moza.”
I imagine this collaboration between Moza Racing and Polyphony Digital is going to be a big deal, with both parties teasing future announcements.
It’ll be interesting to see what the two parties deliver.
