Re: Sony Finally Speaks on PC Cancellations, Wants to Enhance Value of PS5

Sunraku

Moving forward, it sounds like virtually all Sony’s online multiplayer games will release on the PC, as it looks to broaden the audience of those communities

But Sony doesn't release many online games unless they're money-hatting titles. They've basically all but killed their live service experiment. Only a few titles remain: Project Gummy Bears, Hunters Gathering, and Fairgame$. So what else do they have left to offer on that front?

Re: New Senua Game Reveal Used as a Way to Sell Ninja Theory to Suitors

Sunraku

@awp69 So, let me get this straight. We dismiss Roundhouse because it was bought by Bethesda and merged with ZeniMax Online after three years of ownership under Microsoft. But we're going to count Japan Studio as a closure — even though they were reorganized and merged with Team Asobi and other SIE studios... the same as Roundhouse Studios.

Re: New Senua Game Reveal Used as a Way to Sell Ninja Theory to Suitors

Sunraku

@AdamNovice

But now they want to shop round their own studios on those shows because Xbox aren't getting enough of a profit to keep them on?

You know the funny thing about this… Is the whole point of E3 was exactly for this. E3 was never for us as consumers. It was a trade show to display new or upcoming products as well as to pre-sell shipments to retailers for the rest of the year including the late-year holiday season. It was for the press, companies, and investors. So Microsoft using their own E3 style stream to still do that isn’t that far fetched or technically wrong.

Re: New Senua Game Reveal Used as a Way to Sell Ninja Theory to Suitors

Sunraku

@Matroska

You could see their awful approach with the 360. PS3 had controllers with rechargeable batteries, 360 had old fashioned batteries you had to buy.

This the one we should be grateful that Microsoft did. Replacing a $4 batteries is better than replacing a $60 controller. And before you say “But the PS3 battery can be changed” the average consumer aren’t opening up controllers to replace batteries. They’re gonna trash the controller and buy a new one.

The fact that Microsoft has kept easy to swap batteries this long is probably one of most pro consumers and eco friendly thing they’ve done.

Re: Rumour: Gaming Industry 'Bloodbath' Imminent, as Sony, Microsoft, and More Brace for Mass Layoffs

Sunraku

@AtlasLivesAgain What you're asking for is nothing but a terrible, vicious cycle. Developers get laid off, create another studio, and 9 times out of 10, that studio makes the same mediocre content we've been playing for the last couple of decades. The studio closes, or more layoffs happen — or the game does well, the studio continues to make several hits, eventually gets bought out or merges, and then layoffs happen again.

Clearly, it isn't working. The industry can't support how large it has become. Not every bright-eyed 13-year-old who goes on to get a cheap game development degree is actually cut out for game development or deserves a chance. If they are actually good, they'll have no issue transferring those skills to another industry.

So far, we have something like 23–25 notable games scheduled between September and October 2026. If you look at the release schedule between now and October, it's well over 100. That is absolutely disgusting. And you're asking for more of these people to go out and create more studios and work on more games?

Re: Rumour: Gaming Industry 'Bloodbath' Imminent, as Sony, Microsoft, and More Brace for Mass Layoffs

Sunraku

I know this may not be the best thing to say, but hopefully after these layoffs, these developers decide to make a mass exodus and leave the gaming industry altogether. We have too many studios, way too many games, and way too many developers fighting for a limited number of spots.

We don’t need these developers leaving and running off to join another dime-a-dozen studio and making the same kind of games they were making at these larger companies. I don’t want to watch The Game Awards or SGF and hear about another tiny studio filled with developers from a hit franchise anymore.

@RamboMike

Just because you don’t like the ML and AI advancements, doesn’t mean others don’t. I don’t know how much experience you have with DLSS and Fram Gen. My experience is that they both work amazingly well. Sure, it’s ”cheating”, but in reality devs have always been cheating in one or another to be able to adapt to the hardware at hand

What comment are you even replying to? Nothing I said even remotely suggests or even hints that I said anything negative or expressed any disdain for ML/AI advancement. And I probably have more experience than you, as I've owned the last three generations of Nvidia ML/AI-capable cards (20 Series to 40 Series). I don't own a 50 Series because I work professionally with ML/AI systems IRL, so I get to work with Nvidia's big-boy RTX PRO 6000 and DGX Spark systems.

This isn’t even developers adapting to the hardware at hand. This is developers pushing out unoptimized software and using hardware features make for their mistakes. Adapting would be coming up with interesting solutions to bypass shortcomings of the hardware is itself… Like they do with the Switch.

And I don’t understand how you can say that the difference becomes less obvious the longer the ”generation” goes on? It’s obviously the other way around, as it always has been. PC hardware evolves while the consoles don’t (during the generation).

I never said it gets less obvious, so again, I don't know where you're getting that from.

When you look at previous console generations like the Xbox 360 or PS4, there was clearly a significant difference between PC and console, and that gap got even wider as the generation progressed. Consoles were seeing features outright removed or games that were downright unplayable.

We are not seeing that same obvious difference anymore because consoles are evolving as the generation progresses. They aren't staying stagnant.

Consoles are now adopting technologies like Frame Gen and progressively moving from FSR 2 to FSR 3.1, with potential adoption of FSR 4. This has allowed consoles to remain far more competitive against PC.

Systems like the PS5 Pro with PSSR and the upgrade to PSSR 2 bring a level of visual quality, image fidelity, and stability that we've never seen this late in a console generation before.

Re: Xbox Planning Major Layoffs Next Month, Could Involve a Studio Closure

Sunraku

@UltimateOtaku91 If you look at Xbox Game Studios, teams like Turn 10, Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, and Double Fine are probably on the chopping block.

Activision has 5 support studios for just CoD, on top of the 3 main developers — some of these studios have multiple locations.

And who knows how bloated Blizzard is…

There is probably room to close studio without massively hurting their output.

Re: Xbox Will 'Try to Do More' Console Exclusives if the Health of Its Business Improves

Sunraku

@RamboMike

It becomes bigger the longer the current console generation comes along.

Typically, that has always been the case, but not with this generation of consoles. Sure, if you use something like the Switch 2 or Series S for comparison, the difference is there, but it's very hard to spot the differences even this late in the generation on a Series X or PS5/Pro.

This comes down to the fact that we aren't seeing normal jumps in rasterization performance anymore. This generation started with a focus on ray tracing. That's where we were going to see the limitations of the PS5 and Series X come into play.

But as the generation went on, we saw fewer and fewer games use it, and even franchises that pushed it, like CoD and Battlefield, dropped it altogether.

Now companies like Nvida are pushing more toward AI/Machine Learning improvements, so we aren't seeing the jump anymore is visuals

If you look at UE6, they are pushing away from focusing on graphical increases like UE4 and UE5, and pushing prioritize multithreading for CPU performance.

But, even early on CP2077 for example was way prettier on PC with the right hardware ofc

CP2077 took forever to get native builds on SeriesX/PS5, and became nothing more than a glorified tech demo for Nvidia Frame generation in order to push visuals that 99% of gamers won't see or use outside of fancy Youtube clickbait 5090 videos... I think it safe it not a big difference anymore

Re: Ubisoft Shutting Multiple Studios, as the News Just Keeps Getting Worse

Sunraku

@The_Elder Cause the person with the furry raccoon photo is really using AI. Comment not AI, but okay. 👌. But I'm sorry I put my thoughts and years of watching Ubisoft flounder (knowing that studios like Ubisoft Singapore only exist because of tax credits) into a terribly worded, poorly structured, and rushed comment right before bed. Will you forgive me? 🥺

Re: Ubisoft Shutting Multiple Studios, as the News Just Keeps Getting Worse

Sunraku

At its peak, Ubisoft operated over 45 internal development studios and some of the largest in-house teams in the industry. Even then, it never ranked in the top 10 game companies by revenue.

The company built this scale partly on public subsidies. It receiving tax credits, plus ongoing support in France and lower-cost locations like India and Eastern Europe. This fueled rapid growth but created heavy bloat and high fixed costs.

Now the model is just collapsing: thousands of layoffs since 2022, multiple studio closures and a rushed restructuring into “Creative Houses” after years of underperforming games and big losses. The subsidies just delayed the reckoning.

Re: Xbox Will 'Try to Do More' Console Exclusives if the Health of Its Business Improves

Sunraku

@11001100110zero

has a option to add in 30GB of Hi Res textures. Consoles cannot manage it, so it's a PC only upgrade. Gears 5 also has access to the "Insane" preset on PC. So it comes with additional shadow, lighting, framerate, physical object on screen options etc.

As someone who played Gears 5 on the ‘Insane’ preset, it ultimately added very little to the overall presentation. The same was true for Gears 4. The Series X basically ran the Ultra setting and looked very good.

So yes 75% of games are identical, but there are those that have to be played on PC for the best experience.

The bulk of major games that people play fall within that 75%. The ones that don’t are typically PC-oriented titles (strategy, simulation, etc.).

These are the games that actually take advantage of the PC’s unique scalability and capabilities to offer an experience that isn’t just pixel-peeping for visual quality. Instead, they deliver more complex AI, physics-based destruction, and mods that don’t just add prettier colors—they create a more enticing gameplay experience.

That is the real advantage of playing on PC versus console. Not graphics.

Re: Xbox Will 'Try to Do More' Console Exclusives if the Health of Its Business Improves

Sunraku

@11001100110zero The visual quality difference between modern consoles and high-end PCs is so minuscule, especially since I have a PS5 Pro.

Sitting at a normal viewing distance from a 55" TV, I could not tell you the difference between the PC and PS5 without pixel-peeping. This isn't the PS4/Xbox One or even the 360/PS3 era, where there was basically a night-and-day difference. 🤷

Re: Xbox Will 'Try to Do More' Console Exclusives if the Health of Its Business Improves

Sunraku

@DefiledViper No. They are talking about the XBOX side of the business. They need to see sales improve — not just for the hardware, but also for games on the platform.

Meaning if XBOX gamers aren't buying games or hardware, they will continue to release on PlayStation.

So if you also own an XBOX or PC, do not buy their game on that platform.

Show them that PlayStation is the only way forward for them to survive as a business.

Even though I own a 4090 PC, I will not be buying E-Day, and I will only be buying my Microsoft games on PlayStation going forward.

Let XBOX gamers go down with the ship they created by supporting unhealthy business practices.

Re: Halo PS5 Collector's Edition Instantly Sells Out, and for Good Reason

Sunraku

@termiki

The reason the new Gears game is not coming to PS5 is that the sales of the remaster on PS5 were abysmal.

Here's the cleaned-up version:

Was there anything to prove that the sales were abysmal? I would say it was a "meager" seller on the platform. Sales had trended higher since its release, but overall, Reload was never a system seller on any platform — it only sold around 1 million copies across all 3 platforms.

Re: Fable DLC Already Confirmed for PS5, Adds New Region

Sunraku

@Balaam_

On the other hand, known dlc and the game is 6months away? Sounds like this could have been part of the main game and it’s being artificially bisected and withheld for additional paid content.

We have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. I mean, for all we know, the game could be done at this point and is just being delayed to avoid a crowded release window.

The multiple delays mean that development timelines keep getting thrown off. And instead of announcing the DLC at a more appropriate time, they decided to just toss it in as a Premium Edition add-on.

Re: Halo PS5 Collector's Edition Instantly Sells Out, and for Good Reason

Sunraku

@AdamNovice Wouldn't the point be to buy it and force them to see the potential sale lost?

Vote with your wallet — money speaks louder than nonsensical fanboys on the internet. Once upper management sees the sales loss for Gears E-Day and Clockwork Revolution compared to other titles on PlayStation, they'll have Xbox change course again.

Not buying it only gives them ammo to justify not supporting the system later on.

Re: PS5's Until Dawn 2 Has Been in Development for At Least 4 Years Already

Sunraku

@Americansamurai1 That’s not always the case. Case in point: Death Stranding. 505 Games published it on other platforms after Kojima re-acquired the rights from Sony. Using something as wildly compatible as UE5 leaves the potential open for PC, Switch, or Xbox ports down the line. It’s something Sony may not be 100% keen on, now that they seem to be moving back to full console exclusivity. They will want their engine to only be used with their system.

Re: Zenless Zone Zero's Gorgeous New City Revealed Early After Major Leak

Sunraku

@Enuo

amount of effort they put into new regions just for players to walk back and forth between four spot of interest.

Couldn't you say that about basically any open world environment? Barely any open world games use every inch of the dense, detailed environments that their teams create. Everything tends to be the same spots used over and over, and the rest is just window dressing for when you're traveling between them.

Re: Wolverine PS5 Is a Linear Single Player Action Game, Not Open World

Sunraku

@Scottyy I guess they wanted to avoid the major issue that X-men tend to cause for the Marvel Universe. You can get aways with the F4 being off world or another dimension, or the Avenger hanging out on the West Coast.

But the pure concept of X-Men, the prejudice that comes with that is gonna be hard to show in game like Marvel Spider-Man. You can't have X-men without the anti-mutant discourse, protest, Sentinels and the likes.

And if the X-Men existed on Earth 1048, how did we not see sign of that in last 3 Spider-Man games.

So it works better to have the mutant still hidden instead with no public facing team like X-Men, and instead go with Team X.

Re: Live Service MMO Horizon Steel Frontiers Delayed Until 2027

Sunraku

@Frmknst

MMO describes more so the structure and genre of the game (the vast player counts and shared world)

Live Service describes the business model and development strategy.

  • Delivered incrementally via frequent patches, seasonal events, and rotating activities.
  • Constantly shifting progression, time-gated grinds, and chasing new seasonal "gear scores".
  • Heavily relying on in-game shops, battle passes, and seasonal content.

Stuff like Old School RuneScape or certain periods of Guild Wars 2 could be an MMO and not a Live Service MMO
