You’ve been asking for more linear single player action games from Sony, and Marvel’s Wolverine is set to make good on that request later this year.
Unlike the Spider-Man series, which takes place in a sandbox New York City, this latest effort from first-party studio Insomniac is not open world.
In fact, according to Game Director Mike Daly, that was never the intention from the start.
He told IGN:
“I can say we did not set out to make an open world game or a sandbox game. What we really wanted was high octane, high intrigue, linear single player adventure, and the missions reflect that in their structure.”
Daly described the release as a “globe-hopping” affair with comic book-style pacing. He likened the experience to a “rollercoaster”, which “grips you from beginning to end”.
Obviously we saw in the latest trailer Logan fighting alongside Jean Grey, before chasing down some trucks on a motorcycle.
While the game will be linear, Daly says you will have options over how you approach combat gauntlets, with stealth being one path you can take.
He explained:
“The areas have different paths you could take. Stealth is optional; you could do it or you could not do it, you could jump straight into combat. And you can poke your nose around the nooks and crannies of the world to find things here and there, and some optional content and collectibles along the way.”
So it sounds like this is going to be quite a different experience to the Spider-Man games, with an emphasis on combat and spectacle, as opposed to traversal and exploration.
I was a big fan of the underrated X-Men Origins: Wolverine on the PS3, and that game had a similar kind of setup.
Of course, I’m expecting Sony’s budget here to deliver a much more exciting white-knuckle experience, and I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on it.
