Hellblade Studio Hunting for Buyer, Days After Announcing New Game for PS5 1

A little over a week ago, Hellblade dev Ninja Theory announced Senua for the PS5 – but now it’s on the cusp of being closed down.

The Cambridge-based developer – which previously worked with Sony on the PS3 game Heavenly Sword – was reportedly told by Microsoft that it will be shut down earlier today.

But The Verge (paywalled) says it’s hoping to find a buyer, as it tries to regain its independence.

The story matches reporting from Bloomberg’s (paywalled) Jason Schreier, who says “several” Xbox-owned studios face the chop. Compulsion Games and Double Fine are all apparently fighting for their independence as well.

Just days ago, Ninja Theory revealed Senua as a new action-focused take on the Hellblade franchise, with a 2027 release planned for the PS5. Now its future is in doubt.

This all comes as part of a wider “reset” at Xbox, which has hinted at mass layoffs across the board.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said just this weekend that it needs to make the “business sustainable”, with new Xbox boss Asha Sharma revealing the division has been operating at a 3% accountability margin.
