Platinum Trophy #28: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Date Earned: 23rd June 2021
Dopamine Index:
Anybody paying attention may have noticed there's been a gap in the Going Platinum schedule.
That mainly just comes down to recovering from a really nasty cold combined with an extremely packed week-or-so of gaming news. Geoff Keighley doesn't care about my suffering.
Anyway, I'm out of the trenches now, and things are coming back to a more regular cadence, so it's time to resume Everyone's* Favourite** Push Square Feature™.
It's a good one, this: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a truly wonderful game that I just thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
To be honest, I don't have an awful lot to say on this game that hasn't been repeated many times over. I have perfectly temperate takes on this thing.
I think the main thing that comes to me when I reflect on Rift Apart is just how good-looking it is.
A lot of people will reasonably equate the best visuals with realism, and that can certainly be impressive. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, for all its otherworldly elements, has some of the most incredibly realistic character models and environments I've ever seen.
However, it's not the be-all and end-all. Rift Apart remains one of PS5's most visually striking games, not only for some seriously good texture and material work (Ratchet's fur and Clank's gleaming metal are rendered immaculately, for example) but also a brilliantly cohesive art style across the board.
I'm trying to avoid the cliché of saying it looks like a Pixar movie, but the fact is it kind of does. I think that comes down to brilliant animation, a ton of detail in the environments, and stylised, colourful characters. In that sense, I can't think of another game that quite matches it.
I suppose Kena: Scars of Kosmora will hover in a similar space when that comes around.
But yes, I just really love the way Rift Apart looks. I wouldn't be surprised if it holds up better long-term than a lot of other high-end PS5 games.
That's to say nothing of the technical stuff it's also doing, like the still-impressive world shifting stuff it's doing with the SSD.
Frankly, the Trophies came pretty easily in this game. Given the game's all-ages target audience, a straightforward list of trinkets makes sense, but it's a really fun one to complete all the same.
Obviously there's satisfaction in earning Trophies that are tougher, really testing your skills at a game or encouraging you to try alternative approaches, but there's something to be said for a list that's complete when the game's complete.
It all feels neatly tied up. You've collected all the stuff, you've finished all the optional extras, you've seen and done everything — platinum earned. I dunno, there's just something nice about that.
Cheers, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

The best Insomniac game ever perhaps. I definitely agree that the game is visually striking, potentially still the best looking PS5 game. At the very least, it’s the only game that’s managed that feeling of ending a cinematic directly into gameplay so seamlessly. Rift Apart is a game I’ve appreciated more as time’s passed too.
Great game with a fun trophy list. Not exactly tough, but not braindead either and it can be creative in what some of the trophy requirements are.
I'm actually currently playing it and it looks stunning in 120hz quality mode. A very fun game, AAA quality, very responsive, great use of the dualsense and the levels are built in a way that you always stumble on something interesting or a collectible wherever you go. Insomniac at its finest.
loved this game. don't really chase trophies, but once I finished the game there were only a handful left, so I went for it.
I've now decided that if I love a game, and once beating the story, there isn't a huge grind for the platinum, i'll go for it.
“ In that sense, I can't think of another game that quite matches it.”
Because they virtually don’t exist anymore. Most platformers these days are indie.
This is one of my favourite features too, highlights games that are (mostly) so good you guys went for the platty
I’ve managed to do 2 play through of this game. And will probably do a 3rd. That high honor for me as games barely get 1 play through much less 2. I typically drop 90% of game I pick after a couple hours.
One of my all time favorite games! It was the first PS5 game that made you feel the generational jump! Ratchet is such an underrated game character. Everything about the series is top notch! The characters, the humor, the platforming, and especially the weapons!
I'm.not a big trophy hunter but this is my 3rd favourite platinum behind only Astros playroom and Astrobot.
I agree about the looks. It's stunning.
Really hope it's not the last we see of this series as it's fantastic
I missed one of the collectables and after you finish the story you can't "officially" access the area again. I managed to jump and jump and make my way in. Great game, hopefully we get another.
I did / do easily prefer Insomniac's Spiderman games, but this game was excellent. Technically amazing as the article states - Insomniac are on a different level to most in this area: 80fps, with RT, and great visuals, all on only a base PS5.
I have the platinum, don't really hunt trophies at all, but otherwise do try to 100% games.
The best game on the system. So few PS5 games have felt this next gen. The visuals, the way it's using the SSD and the dual sense features. It feels built for the console in a way I haven't felt much this generation. I got the platinum and then played it one more time because I think it's just the absolute peak of one of my favourite series in gaming. I knew I'd like this game, but I did not expect it to make me feel things the way it did.
Yep I’ve got this one. Brilliant game brilliant graphics brilliantly funny. Love it
Great game looks amazing on pro. I've just got the platinum on mindseye and considering the hate, I had fun with it. Interested to know how many people completed the campaign??
It's a solid game. As someone with no interest in Marvel, it is a shame that insomniac are far more focused on those games.
It is one of the best looking games, and one of the few PS5 games that shows off what the SSD and Dualsense controller can do. Like Demon's Souls. Both launch games.
It's all so tiring.
@Ricksta probably both of you that enjoyed Mindseye.
Still in my top 3 on the system
My first solo platinum ever. An absolute blast I look forward to returning to one day
Such a shame Insomniac have been reduced to a Marvel/dork bait factory.
>A lot of people will reasonably equate the best visuals with realism
I don't think there's anything reasonable behind it. Vanillaware games are prettier than any realism.
i wish they would remake the older rachet games a crack in time remake would be great
I misread the article description and for a moment I thought i was living in a alternative universe and playstation was still doing platinum ( essential budget price ) games from back in the day 😂
Yeah is a great game and one of my favourite ps5 games. I think ratchet is the kind of game Sony can release earlier in the Gen as a true exclusive and not be too concerned about sales numbers. Hopefully they do the same on ps6 as a game only possible on ps6 and a true exclusive. I know the game eventually went to PC but thankfully sony stopped the PC ports of big single player exclusives.
Everyone's* Favourite** Push Square Feature™
You're darn right it is! Keep it coming!
I think I got the platinum on this in about 30 hours. Short and quick platinum of a beautiful game.
The best genre is the 3D platformer. I feel like it's become quite clear that there is a place for the Mascot Platformer to make a full-fledged comeback. The PS5 has had some damn fine ones too from the first party with Astro Bot, Rift Apart and Sackboy. I just wish we got them a bit more frequently.
Even in the Nintendo world you can feel that something isn't right since it's been too long since we got 3D Mario
Unfortunately, it'll be forever before we see anything else in the franchise
@cainhurst94 I love 3D platform games. PS5 is a great place for them too. They are under represented compared to FPS, racers, RPGs etc but they do seem to quite popular with indie devs at least.
The SpongeBob games have been quite decent too even if like me you don't really have any nostalgia for the show
Still disappointed me but sure good enough artstyle/visuals.
Gameplay ideas and story disappiinted.
@Cypher1942 it’s certainly my favourite feature too👍🏻. Keep them coming please 👏
@Sunraku Same here. One of the few games I have finished let alone Platinumed...
Still people banging on about the SSD for this game?
Rift Apart is OK but Tools Of Destruction was a better game - which also had stunning visuals (for the PS3 era) and 'innovative' (but irritating) controls. It's Insomniac doing what they've always done very well.
@Ricksta looks amazing on plain ole junkpile ps5 too. But hey. That is super duper awsome you play on pro. Most all us gutter dwellers only play on trash model ps5. Just want to say it first before anyone else does….you are the freaking coolest one on here.
@LazyLombax dang. I already told ricksta he was the freaking coolest dude on here before I saw your comment. You know since you mentioned playing on a Pro. I was telling him that even the plain ole garbage junkpile ps5 basic poor model looks great too. So I guess between the two of you,you will have to measure other things to know just who the coolest is now. I know that measuring isn’t something normally done but with you both mentioning playing it on pro measuring at this point is all you can do. People ask me why be a jerk about it ? I’m like I’m not. Nobody cares what system you play a game on when talking about how great a game is. It doesn’t mean anything except a person trying to flex for no reason. Well I say that is bullcrap. How in the world would we know who the coolest people are? How would we be able to have a peaceful dinner and still be curious about what system people played on? I say the plain piece of crap model ps5 still makes the game look amazing. And as i said before most of us gutter dwelling homeless people play on the trash ps5. Not a single one of us could be as cool as the ones playing on Pro. So hold your head up. When you mention pro “even though it’s not important in this context “ when you mention it it….feel proud. You deserve to feel good after posting it. Thank you. Have an amazing day you super fly guy!!!!!
@Ninerguy1608 I am the greatest bow to me
Still my favorite PS5 1st party tile. It looks so good and plays well. Beat it twice on PS5 and once on PS5 Pro. On my Oled TV it looks so close to a Pixar movie that’s playable.
@LazyLombax exactly my plan. I’m happy it worked. Now if the rest of the world would complement the greats like I do,it would be a smooth sailing world.
@LazyLombax as far as gaming goes I’m alright. Won’t say what I play on but it’s DYNAMITE!!! Also ninerguy name goes back many many years. I stopped watching NFL. Got boring compared to College football Saturdays. UGA.
Such a fun game with a platinum that was a blast right to the end. Brilliant game.
