While I love that an Englishman runs PlayStation - a Geordie, no less - it's absolutely time that Mark Cerny took the reins. A passionate gamer and developer, he'd never have let Sony end up in this slight PR snafu.
@neverenoughtime Normally this stuff doesn’t bother me too much, like in A Way Out or the torture scene in GTA V (although I didn’t like that so much because the guy was pleading for it to stop). But this was too much for me, the child-like voice and everything. I totally appreciate what they tried to do, but I very nearly walked away from it at that point. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was more apparent that she was fine after and they felt remorse for their actions...
I like my humour dark and I'm a big fan of Tarantino-esque violence, but this was a bit much even for me. I immediately stopped caring about the parents, particularly May, and hoped there was an ending in which one of them died and left the other to suffer... I understand the irony of that, but the voice acting made it too much for me. Shut your eyes and you could very believably be dragging a little girl to her torturous death - it's in bad taste. A choice mechanic would have been far better, and a decent storyteller could have pulled it off - Telltale games have proven that many times over. Plus you could even show players the stats of who did it and who didn't, we like that kind of insight.
I think more could have been done at the credits (or earlier) to show that she was ultimately fine, especially when the devs clearly knew this would be a polarising scene anyway.
I'm also amazed that Sony/Microsoft haven't had backlash over parents buying this for kids to play and then encountering this scene (and the occasional bad language throughout). That kind of leads me to ask who this game is marketed for? It's not a kids' game yet at the same time not really an adult one either.
This aside, the game is the best co-op game I've ever played. Very imaginative in its use of mechanics and never repetitive, but clearly EA will never let them pull this kind of scene again as they'll have seen the backlash to it online.
They say it looks too amateur to be from Kojima, yet he downgraded assets and production values for PT to further throw people off the scent before the reveal... if anything, that adds credence to the idea that Abandoned is his new horror game.
@Old-Red Your days of buying games day-one are basically over, then, if £55 is your ceiling. Counting for inflation, we've done incredibly well as gamers.
I'd definitely buy it. As someone who didn't own a first-gen PSVR, I'd also be interested in the Batman and Spider-Man games along with Beat Sabre and the VR Astro game.
However, there has to be content throughout its life to prevent it from becoming an EyeToy-esque gimmick. Perhaps VR modes for all first-party games after its launch? GT7 could incorporate it for sure, and it'd differentiate it from Forza 8.
I’m so used to digital games from Game Pass, I’m all-digital now. Less clutter and for brand-new releases there’s very little price difference between the PS Store and Amazon. Sony also run very regular sales with good discounts, so I’m happy not ever having to get up to change discs! I never sold my games anyway so I’m not losing out.
@DrClayman I’d like to think they’d incorporate an upgrade fee, rather than just saying “Nah, mate”. Some more money is better than no more, after all.
@Keyblade-Dan Sony have been so good to Kojima, both throughout his career and especially since the 'Konami Incident', that I can't imagine he'd run off to develop multi-plats that also target Xbox or Nintendo consoles. PC? Sure, after a few years of a game's release but that's now a Sony tactic anyway. Kojima Productions is, for all intents and purposes, the new Japanese developer they need. Death Stranding was never going to be a #1 game but Sony still funded it and gave it their all, no reason to think they won't do so for his next.
@dark_knightmare2 So true. A mate of mine at a record label we worked at once told me "You don't hit #1 without selling a few copies at Asda," and it's the same principle here. Like anything with enthusiasts, the ratio of people who are really into the subject to those who are more casual is heavily one-sided. If games didn't cost so much to make then perhaps this would be less of an issue, or if casuals were willing to deep-dive the Indie section of the Store a bit more than they do. I'd be interested to see sales figures for the current Indie game sale compared to the other ongoing sales that are on the Store.
@OmegaStriver What I wouldn't give for a whole new MotorStorm on PS5, with a massive emphasis on the festival and music aspects that spiritual successor Forza Horizon has long since forgotten about.
Actually, I find many more driving games available on Xbox generally - certainly arcade ones - than on PlayStation. It'd be great for an arcade GT game alongside GT 7, for example, as there's absolutely a gap in the market for such a first-party racer.
Sony have sales all the time, within a few months this will drop. First-adopters will pay £70 then everyone else will be paying maybe £45-50 in about three months post-launch.
Good stuff, just hoping Mayhem and Gridfall get Party modes because they’re the best modes in the game (IMO) and all I want to do is smash my friends up.
@get2sammyb You can bet that if MS had got away with it, Sony would most likely have followed suit - unless it was worth more from a PR standpoint to not do so yet. Just like how they showcased the ability to play secondhand games on the PS4 back in 2013.
I took advantage of this, quite a nice Brucey bonus on top of my launch-day delivery.
I have to say, it was personally no effort at all to pre-order back when they first came out - very straightforward. I didn't believe how lucky I'd been until some of my colleagues tried, and failed repeatedly. Some are still looking! Just boggles the mind how it's still the case. In my experience, most of the people I know struggling at this point didn't pre-order at launch but those I know who did want one for launch generally got one.
I bought Ghost of Toshiba (just a better name) since I've been waiting for a sale and my Lord, this could pass as a PS5 game. I'm playing it off my PS5's SSD for full loading benefits and playing on an LG CX... simply stunning. Glad I waited, stunning game and a great price. I'm not even mad when/if it comes to PS+, same as I wasn't when Control hit Game Pass this month because they're both experiences I'd happily pay for. I also bought CoD Cold War after swearing not to, mainly because my friends are all on it and I have to say it's a hoot online, and the campaign was really enjoyable. I love Cold War storylines and it didn't disappoint.
My girlfriend also renewed my PS Now sub, and there's plenty to play on there. We're lucky to have a low-latency Virgin connection, so either streaming or downloading is super quick. Between that and Astro's, I'm very glad I went PlayStation first this gen after being predominantly Xbox last time (I do get them all eventually but never all at once). Even treated myself to an official PlayStation t-shirt from Next!

@munstre That's entirely on Sony.

Disgraceful that they've reset the unlock progress. I can fully see them simply giving it to players after the backlash if it keeps up.

Sony have Kojima Productions and Polyphony still, plus new Astrobot games. No need to panic just yet.

@Shadow_Beast With any game, you’re paying for a licence - the cost of packaging etc. is negligible at their volume.

Re: Destruction AllStars Guide: Tips, Tricks, and How to Win
The maximum Gears you can carry in Carnado is 50, not 30.
Re: Destruction AllStars Commits a Cardinal Sin with Voice Chat
Such a shame you can't play Mayhem and Gridfall in a party - the two best modes!
Re: Fall Guys Mid-Season Update 3.5 Available Now on PS4
Poorly timed given that Destruction AllStars launched today and is the current darling of the multiplayer arcade genre.
