Returnal is one of those games that you just know is going to feel great – even if some of its other elements are up for debate. As part of the Future Games Show, developer Housemarque popped by to present its upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, and there are some new gameplay snippets to enjoy.
While the Finnish outfit largely recaps details we’ve already learned, it’s actually a decent presentation, detailing the plot and action in an at-a-glance format. If you haven’t been following this title particularly closely – and you really should read our interview next – then this is a good primer for the title, which went gold earlier today.

Returnal look really great I can’t wait for April 30.
Looks phenomenal. I love the aesthetic.
A game I would so want to play if it wasn’t for other games I’m more interested in shortly after resident evil 8 for one, the mass effect legendary edition I’m extremely hyped for one of my favourite games ever and I so want to platinum it or all three depending on how they have re organised the trophy list maybe all as one game or still three separate games anyway also got deathloop which by the time I’m done with resident evil and mass effect it will probably be between returnal and deathloop which is slightly typical both have the die and reset mechanic but that’s probably where the similarities end there both seem very different and I don’t know which to go for afterwards knowing my luck probably a completely different game.
The game looks really good and it's coming from a great developer but like others here I have a ton of games that are of higher priority like RE8 (it's also easier on the wallet).
I have a month long break from grad school in May. Gonna get stuck into this, disco elysium and resi 8. Will be a good month.
I can't wait I need something new to play
This game just keeps looking better and better. I don’t think I’ll regret my pre-order.
Looks a decent game. Only problem is they have put the price up by £20 ....🙄
Love it. The hype for this game is building nicely for me. Can't wait.
It does look good. I think Sony should meet us in the middle and give a 10% pre order discount to ps+ members, instead of crap that should be included anyway.
@velio84 i don't mate. I could only get a digital at the time. BIG MISTAKE!
The price isn't an issue when you can sell it on, but after a month, my game will be banished to my library for eternity! There is no value in it for me.
The game does look good and I'd love to be part of the conversation when it is released, but I have to stick to my guns. £55 is my limit for new games and I'll be firm with that rule. It's a great shame that the new gen has been essentially classed with a new tier of price. By the time new PS5 games become a reasonable price the hype will be gone and I'll probably just wait till they're even cheaper or included with plus.
This will also have a negative impact on media engagement too as far fewer people will be able to join in with the general discourse of new releases and will probably stop watching and reading most of the content and articles attached to them.
I will say this looks better every time i see it. My worry has been that every time its been shown they have tended to stick to the darker environments, but this trailer appears to show greater variety. I still think this would have been better as a 3rd person adventure rather than a roguelike, and that price point still stings.
I will definitely get this down the road, but probably not until it has been discounted. With Resident Evil 8 and Ratchet around the corner, i dont need to get this yet.
Worth pointing out that i have been able to get RE8 for £47, and Deathloop is available for the same price. Putting Returnal beside them at £70 (lowest i have seen it is £64), just compares so badly.
I cant help but feel this will be discounted early on. You'd like to think this will force a rethink of Sony's pricing strategies. Not all games are equal. I can understand the logic of something like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnorak being 70. But games with a perception of being smaller like this should have a price to match. If this launched at the same price as Miles Morales or Sackboy, i feel it would have sold much better
Interested, but not at the current price point. I can wait 😐🥲
@Loftimus Digital only no thanks. 🤪
Day one PS5 or not.
@Loftimus you can get nearly 15% off using cdkeys PSN credit. Unlikely physical will have that kind of discount at launch.
It's not for me anyway at anywhere near this price so doesn't matter, but just letting you know
@Flaming_Kaiser ps5 digital edition - 'for the bankers'
Not really my cup tea gameplay wise but added to my PlayStation 5 backlog for when i get the system.
How many games do people buy every year to justify 70 as too unreasonable? Not saying it isn’t, just trying to hear people out. For me I’d buy 4 £70 games in a year as long as they are games I want to play. If GOW was £80 I’d pay that. If R&C was £80 I’d pay that so for me it’s not about the price it’s about do I really want this game.
@theMEGAniggle Many of us are worried that Sony is sending this game to die a quick death. Asking 70 for a new IP from a mostly unknown developer when in comparison Resident "freaking" Evil 8 is asking for a mere 60 (they could actually get away with asking for 70).
I'm sure Returnal will have a solid story mode but can you honestly say it's story will be compartible in scope or length to RE8? Housemarque are great developers and deserve better than this.
Kena is another beautiful Playstation game that looks like is being developed by Pixar and seems to have a story by Studio Ghibli, that game is asking for only $40. So what is Sony's game here? Do they have a grudge against Housemarque?
@theMEGAniggle I think in my case it more about the principle. The most I paid for a new game last gen was £50 for Red Dead Redemption 2 at a midnight launch. To suddenly be expected to pay an extra £20 in the least extreme case smarts. I've gone from someone who bought pretty much all of the 1st party games on release at £45 to now not buying anything new in approaching six months when Resident Evil 8 comes out in May. Usually, I'd buy one game a month so long as there was something I wanted to play.
I really don't understand Sony's strategy this gen, they are simultaneously giving away a load of games and raising the price of new releases by a huge amount. All this has done has put me off spending any money at all for what could be the first whole year of the PS5's life.
@Loftimus I almost dont buy digital so i would not know.
Only if its cheap and unavailable without any other option.
@Old-Red I hear you. So in that case you would be apprehensive no matter what game it is you're buying as long as it is priced £70. So if R* came out with GTA VI at £70 you'd be hesitant to buy it?
The way I see it, if I really want to play the game now? Tough for me. I will buy it. I waited a while to play Horizon, GOW, U4, AC: Origins because I didn't want to buy them at full price but I got Spiderman, Miles Morales, GoT, RDR 2 and some others day one because my excitement was too high. I guess only one of those was £70 as I got the ultimate edition but Returnal is a game I feel that excites me every time I hear about it. But yes, we are basically paying $100 per game which is beyond messed up, and I do understand if it causes a major decrease in sales volume this gen, if they don't change it.
@Juanalf Maybe they are trying to usher in a new age of AAAAA gaming? I really don't know why they would give it a £70 price tag, yes it doesn't seem very wise for a new IP but in my thinking I just feel like maybe it somehow warrants that, the same way Demon Souls did, or R&C and the other full priced exclusives will. It is hard to say any game is worth that much but we just have to hope that these publishers do not go for £70 as the standard, especially Ubisoft with their broken messes of games.
@theMEGAniggle I wouldn't buy any game for £70, it's an absolutely ridiculous price to charge for a game. The only thing that would tempt me is any new game from Hidetaka Miyazaki, but that's because I know I'll be playing it for years on and off. Even then I would be reluctant and do my best to find it closer to £60.
Really don't get so many comments about price...if this reviews well, I'm getting it day one. Looks fresh, interesting, and just different. Botw still cost like $55 new. lol...this is what Sony is aiming for, their first-party standards are higher, so they want to value it appropriately. For the amount of hours you get out of some games, (1000 hrs with MP) I'm more than willing to pay $70 for a quality game on day one.
Looks fantastic, hoping for great reviews on this one finger's crossed.
$125 in Australia on the PS store. Doubt I would buy it at that price. I did buy Demon's Souls at full price as it was my first PS5 game, but future games will have to be big, marquee releases for me to pay full whack.
@Omnistalgic £70 = $97. Would you pay that for the base game?
I have a feeling the game will be short(no proof just gut feeling). And it is because of that I dunno if I can fork over a $70 price tag.
The game definitely looks good and nice, cant wait to see the reviews.
Looks like Anthem without the jetpacks, not really feeling this one.
@Old-Red Your days of buying games day-one are basically over, then, if £55 is your ceiling. Counting for inflation, we've done incredibly well as gamers.
@Loftimus ahh my bad...I forget a lot of people are coming from the European continent and not talking about a dollar increase. For U.S $10 increase wasn't a big deal, but that's a big hike for others.
Yeah not for $70, but I'll wait for a decent sale. I'm no rush, got a lot of PS4 games to play, and I still have Demon's Souls and Astrobot to finish, so...
It's not like I need to wait to play anything either despite the small PS5 SSD. All I wait is 30 mins for a 50GB game, so whatever.
@PlayNation5 not really, I've got Resident Evil 8 for £46 and switch games are still reasonably priced. I'll just carry on sending my money that way until I'm a year behind the PS5 exclusive curve.
The writing is on the wall though, I think I'll probably end up going for the PC/Nintendo combo after PS5. With all the negative press and silly pricing I wonder if Sony might be in for a pretty rough ride this generation.
@Rob_230 sackboy is soo much game for 47 quid. Like seriously, I've put at least 70 hours in and that's just the story without really chasing the collectibles. The ripsnorter however, practicing that for the evil platinum, is another 30 hours all on its own. I'll bite when this drops on base or game collection to around 45. Ps5 games 45 seems a good biting price.
@PlayNation5 not if you buy from Base.com or Game collection. They tend to be 15 quid cheaper than everywhere else. And are reliable... Now. They weren't before with packages going missing especially preorder though I suspect my postman was on the thief.
I really hope this game performs well, but sadly will not be buying at release, need to save my money for higher priority games.
Definitely will check it out later when it's $20 or on PS+.
@Ichiban don’t compare this game to that trash game Anthem.
@CieloAzure 60+ hours procedurally generated game.
@Rob_230 it will not be discounted as fast as you think sorry. This is a very big title and worth the asking price. It will retain value since it will review extremely well
@Lordkirkis i dont think this will get discounted anytime soon. And thats fine. I hope it does well. I will get it at some point in the future
